I'll take him on walks and to the park to play, stuff like that. Other than that, I'm leaning towards a couch potato type than isn't crazy hyper indoors.

I would recommend a basenji, aka the African Bush Dog or the Congo Dog. They don't bark and are pretty sweet.

ugly
Thought about adopting a pit, there's a shitload of them out there. But then I remembered that I don't like dogs that will occasionally freak out and maul a kid.

never had a problem in 4 years. the key is to be responsible, I never let him be around new people without me there, especially kids. But really, he loves kids just licks the crap out of their faces.
my buddy has a lab and that thing scares me way more than my pit ever has
Yeah, I wouldn't get a dog that people are going to be afraid of. Mutts are pretty hit and miss. They are great when you get a good one, though. Collies are pretty smart. Retrievers are great if you don't mind the shedding. I like Basenji's, but they are kind of like cats, so I can see why some people don't like them. Boxers are pretty good dogs when you are around, but I don't know anybody that has a boxer that's not a real shithead when it gets left alone. Never get a Chihuahua or Poodle. I also hate Dalmatians with a passion.
Just my 2 cents.

I think that most pit bulls are pretty nice dogs. The problem is that a larger than average percentage of them are pretty aggressive, and they can rip your face off.
Yeah, you gotta be the alpha dog or they will act out in all sorts of ways. Little dogs usually have a higher incidence of this because people think it's cute when they do crap that would earn a big dog an ass beating. And most people's problems with dogs stem from them not exercising their dogs enough. My aunt's boxer is a rough ridin' spaz because she never walks it and he stays in a crate all day during work/school hours.
Pitt bulls are rough ridin' hideous, no idea why anyone would want one. KCFDcat are you black? I heard on the news (re: Mike Vick dog fighting) that black people like to get mean dogs for street cred. Please confirm or deny.

It's all about ownership. A pitbull needs an owner that it can look to for guidance and to be strong, if you can't do this then you probably shouldn't be getting any kind of dog. just imho

Not all dogs are the same. Sometimes nature wins the nature vs nurture battle.

They are really ugly when they aren't adorable puppies.Hmm...Let me think about that.
My mom always had dachshunds when I was growing up. Good little dogs, except with small kids. I want something a little big though. Kinda digging border collies right now.Really? I always had them growing up. Sister has one with 3 girls all below the age of 5. No problems.

I don't really care for animals one way or the other, but Dachsunds are by far my least favorite dog breed.Man, I can't imagine why anyone would think that.
They are just weirdly shaped.Mean and dumb.
And all the ones I've ever known were really mean.
Labs or bust.
I have a rhodesian ridgeback. Get one of those.

Did not mean to offend you. Wiener dogs are cool for some people. But I think they are mean/ugly. Doesn't mean all of them are, just like 90%. Sorry bro :frown:
I have a weird hatred for small dogs though because Mrs FP's family had one when we were dating and they treated it like a human... dressed it up and all that crap.
I hated the thing, so now I just generally hate any dog that is small.
Get a boxer. Do not crop the ears.Yeah, did not crop mine.
Greyhounds are cool but you can never, ever let them off their leash.

So, we rescued a dog and were told he was a yellow lab / golden retriever mix (pretty much looks like a smallish lab). After looking up rhodesian ridgebacks, however, I think he might have some of that in him. Looks almost identical in the face. Hmmm.
got bit in the hamstring by a german shepard
Prob said ten times but I don't want to read through stupid ideas. Get a lab, train it young, enjoy your new best pal.

Great dogs, maybe more high energy than you want but probably not much different than a lab. There are viszla rescue groups in about every state.

It's possible. Our dog is half ridgeback, half mutt. He has some basset hound, pit, and something else in him. His ridge is only present when he gets excited or on the hunt.
Looking for a dog. Thinking about adopting but want a young one, nothing more than 6 months or so. Looking for something similar to a lab in size, been looking at coon hounds or Vizlas or something around there. Dont need a hunting dog but do have some land that i could take it to so It could chase rabbits etc.I would get a short haired dog and hook him up with a bitchin house to stay warm in the winter. Putting a long or even medium length haired dog outside during the summer is cruel imo. I'm assuming you don't live in a cold state.
I would keep it in the backyard while at work. Would also like to take it on runs, nothign to crazy though.
Ideas?

Live in KC. Been looking at Rhodesian Ridgebacks but apparently they are about $1,000 and I dont feel like spending alot of money on an animal. Dont need a purebreed or anything as I have no desire to show or breed them. Would love a Ridgeback lab mix.
Got an english bulldog for Xmas. Lazy as eff, but an absolute riot. Already battling an ear infection of course.
Yeah, same with ours, so I bet he is part RR. He looks like Red XIII when he gets amped up.

Interesting. I always thought it would be hilarious to put a shock collar on fanning and then go out binging for the night.I want a beagle, but have been warned about their barking.
i've had a beagle since he was ~3 months old. he is now 12. he likes to make noise when left alone, but barking and howling has never been an issue when he has company. they're great dogs, but probably not great for apartment living. you could put a shock collar on him or her that activates when they would bark, but i don't necessarily like/agree with that approach.

cute dog. I just got a dog too. it's also cute.
I inherited a 12 year old golden retriever. I don't know if I can go back to puppies. He's so chill and loving and already housebroken (obvs) and I just don't know if I could deal with a high energy pup every again.
I give my dog 2 treats a day. is that too many?
that dog shouldn't be kept in a cage.He has a fence, but he doesn't like to stay outside all day. He's my mom and dads dog. They use to keep him out, but he'd piss and crap everywhere, because he was mad that mom and dad was gone all day. He doesn't seem like he minds. Sometimes he goes and lays in there over lunch with the cage open.
Sounds like AJ wants to build WC a fence.
I am getting an Australian shepherd puppy in a couple months. with any luck I should be able to get a male with blue eyes ( hopefully a blue merle, maybe a tri colored)... i don't know what to name it though.... do I try to pick out a name first, or wait until i get it and name it on the fly? this will be my 2nd largest life decision so far and I don't want to eff it up

So here is the GoDaddy ad that all of the dog people are having outrage contests over. I mean GMAFB. Many dog zealots hate PETA people but they share many similarities.

Also, that's why I go over there a lot for lunch. To let the little guy out. I'm doing gods work here.

Name it Baylor or Drew
guys, she's chews A LOT. like way more than I've ever seen a dog chew...she's also super whine-y, like if you leave the room for more than 2 seconds she starts whining super loud. Any suggestos?
One perk is she already seems to have the potty train thing down pretty good, peed inside the first day she way here, now she seems to know to hit up the kitchen door to be let out.
She's just over 8 weeks. I expected chewing but, man you should see my hands.guys, she's chews A LOT. like way more than I've ever seen a dog chew...she's also super whine-y, like if you leave the room for more than 2 seconds she starts whining super loud. Any suggestos?

1. normal, pups gonna pup, 2. give her something delicious right before you leave the room. pop back in before she starts whining with something delicious again. don't give her the 2nd food if she whines before you get back. don't have to do this a lot, just every once in a while. and always ignore the whining.
good job on the housetraining. how old is she?
we got this ball of awesomeness today.

Good idea on the food thing.
man, that's pretty great for an 8 week old pup (re. housetraining).

P.s. her name is Willa if you're curious. (short for willamette, which is a hop variety :) )

do you train search and rescue dogs, kcfd? my pup's gonna search for stuff (i hope, unless she refuses) too, no rescue though.I don't, but a guy I work with does. so he's going to help me out. The first "test" is at twelve weeks and all she has to do is show that she can follow a trail, which she's already doing

thank you. :)We had one for a while, but had to get rid of him. Ace was his name. Long story short, we had 3 dogs and Ace and Baylor would get into fights a lot. We knew a family that had a huge farm and loved border collies. Needless to say, Ace is in pup paradise.
yes, she's a border collie. now 14 weeks.
ace looks like a great dog.He is. Baylor is too. Baylor is a pit and very protective of his territory. Ace's thick coat save him a few times. They are both quite happy now.

goddamnit, you assholes. one of you post something about how cute my puppy is.
ok. I'll go ahead and acknowledge the elephant in the room. truthfully- the dog looks as if it may be insane. running around- seemingly with no purpose or reason. back and forth, around and around, and then it attacks a person. I guess that for hardcore dogheads this type of activity is considered endearing but man, just seems like a four legged PCP addict to me.

Getting a new dog tomorrow evening (adoption).
We lost a dog last spring and then got a new one right away (adoption). The terrier mix we got had lots of issues with people and would get mean every time someone came over. Then we had issues while away last summer with someone watching her and not being able to control her and she ruined our basement floor. I have a feeling she had been beaten by a male and she had major issues because of it, we tried for about 4 months and it just didn't work out. It was just a bad deal for us and the dog unfortunately. We took a break and continued to look and found one we think will be a better fit.
Now we are getting a rat terrier and based on the foster family he was with he doesn't seem to have any of the issues of our previous dog. He's been around kids, people, other dogs, and cats; energetic guy about a year and a half old. Pretty excited.
:billdance:

Norman's name may become Otis. We are going to let him decide using the ol' bowl with a name on it trick and see which one he eats out of. We are really torn between Norman and Otis.Norman = On Golden Pond
We adopted this Border collie mix named Coby last week, he's a very good dog with a few bad habits. His previous owners had trained him to bark when he needs to go outside, and he has escalated to barking anytime he wants anything.

So lady made her first confirmed kill yesterday.
The vicitim was a squirrel who had been terrorizing my garden for the last month so I wasn't too sad.
Question tho, Will lady develop a taste for blood now that she has killed? Will she need to kill once a month now just to be normal? Once a week?
mrs mocat really wants a beagle. they are adorbs but how do you make them not howl all the time? like when you are at work all day don't they just howl and howl and howl?

I have a friend, who recently got engaged with this girl and she has this really shitty, small, purse dog. When she's not around, he poops and pees every where form...him to clean up. He's like 11 years old, so there's not much time left, but I'm pretty sure he would like there to be even less time left. I guess what i'm getting at is.... How do you poison worthless, unadorable dogs?
:frown: dont murder the dog, wacky. It's the person's fault the dog sucks ass.:D I know. He's a real crap head tho. He seriously hates me, which is weird, because almost all dogs love me.

70 lbs seems like a lotShe's a large dog.
70lb is a small to average sized dog. Mine is 60ish and seems tinyI should say she's large for her breed. Most females top out at 60-65. Vet estimates she still has 5-7lbs left
she looks angry.Just wants to devour the treat in my hand. Pretty much the only way to get her to sit still.

The vet did recommend to put her on "Large Breed" puppy food. dunno what that means, but we did it! Only the best for this hound dog
No, more fat in the food. As my dog was getting older and dropping weight my vet had me put her on puppy food. It would help put on weight or her case slow down her weight drop. The vet did recommend to put her on "Large Breed" puppy food. dunno what that means, but we did it! Only the best for this hound dog
i think its just the size of the kibbles

He is right about the size of the kibble. That is the only different.
I know what the puppy food is for, just not the "large breed" part. don't really care either. she seems to enjoy it. Once a week (after we do scent training sesh's) if she's good she gets chicken and rice for dinner. man she really goes crazy for that stuff.

he's probably mad because someone tied a yellow dishtowel around his midsection and none of you assholes will help him get it off.
 That's big bird (I knew, you knew that). That place that helps foster dogs, is at risk of losing their building, so they're selling costumes to raise money. Ms. Wacky bought a bunch for him. That was my favorite.
@Mrsgooch He's actually pretty quiet. Just a giant bad person!

large breed is less nutrient dense so that the pups grow slower because growing too fast can cause joint problems in larger dogs. some brands also have stuff that is supposed to help with joint health, but afaik no one really knows if they work or not.
no offense, but your pup actually looks very slightly on the tubby side, so less nutrient dense food is probably a good idea even if liblib thinks she's small.

Legit just teared up Pete. That's very tough
Just found out yesterday that my old Golden has a tumor and has weeks/months left to live. He's 13, and has a had a wonderful life and gave my family much more than he got.
This is super hard to take.

i would ask myself, what are am going to do with the results of the tests? the hard answer is probably nothing because of the difficulty of dealing with a tumor on the brainstem. if your dog isn't in any visible pain, and that's confirmed by the doctor, i would just let the guy live his saggy faced life.
this has probably been addressed by the vet but it sounds like maybe he/she has the canine version of bell's palsy, it's called idiopathic facial nerve paralysis.

We went through this one year ago with the kids basset hound that they absolutely adore. She fell down stairs and jacked her back up bad. The vet gave her a not great chance at recovery and said that if she does recover, she won't have control of bowels and what not. The vet also told us that if she didn't have a significant recovery in 2-3 days, then she won't at all. We prepared to have her put down, then decided what would it hurt to give her an extra week or so. The dog made a 99% recovery and we avoided the issue, but part of the prep for putting her down was the discussion with the kids. they were 8 and 10 at the time and took it so much better than I thought they would.
It sucks and I feel for you.
500 is nothing at the vet.
communicate with the owners in some way. how are they supposed to know the dog barks when they aren't home if no one tells them?yep, call the landlord
Pyrenees.
Ours was half lab too, so he looked labish but had all the Pyrenees demeanor. He was around 130lbs
If you are living in Kansas, summer would be brutal on a newfoundland or bernese mtn dog. You could also look at Swiss Mountain Dogs (less hair) or Danes. Both are supposed to be pretty chill and will probably have less slobber than the Bully.
wolfhound or deerhound. those are some sweet, sexy pieces of giant dog meat.
there is a puppy in an apartment down the hall that has been absolutely losing its crap the past few days. today it has been barking for four solid hours now. it sounds like it's right next to the door so i'm doubting the owners put it in a cage/kennel when they leave for the day. i work from home and can usually put on music or something to cover it up, but i would say my level of being annoyed is at a 3.5/7.
is there anything i can do in this situation? should i leave a note for the owners as if they will/can do anything about it? or do i just have to deal with it?

haven't been home much in the past few weeks, but i'm back this week and just left a note. i went out to make sure i had the right apartment, it's directly across the hall. i think the dog actually is in a cage/kennel because i can hear it scraping around in there. poor thing is miserable, just constantly barking and whimpering. i offered to take it on walks or dog sit occasionally.
congratulations on acquiring your dog share.

a border collie, naturally. or close enough to one.I'm not surprised. I live capture raccoons and then haul them around 5 or more miles to the wilderness area of Lake Perry to let them run free and away from our place. But those dirty, pesky little devils come back; usually within a week's time.

I live capture raccoons and then haul them around 5 or more miles to the wilderness area of Lake Perry to let them run free and away from our place. But those dirty, pesky little devils come back; usually within a week's time.

Two years ago my buddy lost his old pointer bitch (old age). Bought a pup to replace her.I don't think this means he thinks it's worth it. More like the dogs are a tool that when it breaks you replace it. He has no emotional attachment.
About a year ago his other pointer bitch, 6 years old, died suddenly (grass awn migrated to spinal column, infection, paralysis). Bought a pup to replace her.
Pup #1 died suddenly in January (impaled on mesquite tree), and he's looking into getting another puppy to replace.
So he must think it's worth it. Honestly I don't know how he's not lost it going through all this heartache. He's a better man than me no doubt.
I'm glad I never let anyone teach my dog to hunt, I actually like herDon't be a dick

Sorry for being glad my dog hasn't been impaled by a tree or torn open from barb wire. Good grief WackyCat08
Guys, I picked him up last Tuesday 7/5. He's off two of his meds now, only has the prednisone (steroid) remaining. I pretty much have to carry him everywhere because he can't handle himself on the slick hardwood floors. Looks like Michael J Fox on ice skates. Saturday he went to the bathroom for the first time by himself, so he is definitely improving. Last night he was a dumbass and tried to walk down the deck stairs by himself, fell about half the way before I could catch him. But anyway, it looks like he's going to make it!:Woohoo:

You also might be able to use a pen light to see if you can see the quick through the claw.

what kind is that, does it have any wolf in it? a wolf would dominate the local pups so hard.
Hate to bring this thread down again. Haven't really wanted to talk about it, but my rhodesian died suddenly a couple weeks ago. Ended up swallowing a portion of a corn cob whole. We didn't have any idea he had done it. Nothing happened for 2 or so weeks, then when it started to move downstream, it perforated the lining of his stomach and intestines. Wasn't really anything we could do at that point. When the place tacks on an odd sentence at the end of their description like "Billy loves the company of men," are they talking about me being a man as opposed to a woman or that Billy's gay, not that there'd be anything wrong with that?

you should get a young dog, trim. personally, it's hard for me to imagine ever adopting an adult dog rather than getting a puppy, but some people do that and it works for them.
I like the eye patches. Chief Tater Tot looks cool, but that name. Can those be changed?
There's a Jake, which would work well obvs, but only 1 year old.

if you know what kind of dog you want, you can check for breed specific rescues. they'll have dogs of that breed and often crosses and similar breeds. my impression is that those orgs usually keep the dogs longer in foster houses and give them a little more attention prior to adopting them out.

You want a dog from a farm out in western KS. JHe works hard, gets up early and is the last one to leave the dog park. Sure, he might be the slowest and least intimidating dog around but he will never get in trouble (except for the occasional delay of walk screw up) and you can be proud of him. In 4 years, he might even be good enough to be captain
I think trim is looking for a quality p5 transfer with a little more polish

take it straight to the vet and have him do a point-to-point inspection (including under the hood)
@dub crate train it. Also, if possible train it to use a dog door.
Woah. That's a big dog.@dub crate train it. Also, if possible train it to use a dog door.
Crate is ready to rock. Doggy door might not be plausible with our back door/yard by the time it would be good to train her. She's gonna be between 130-150 too so that'd be a large doggy door too
why did dog litter never catch on?

it cuts your housing options by probably 75% but the killer is they demand a double security deposit.
many Japanese house finish materials are very fragile and don't stand up well to pets. think soft wall paper, rice paper interior doors/room dividers, tatami floors.

thank you. He had a good run- 16 years. Really thought nature would take its course but his quality of life had just gotten too bad to let him suffer. great friend though.
both those dogs are too small.
i've never understood what people are talking about when they say crate training. is it just that you tell a dog to go in a crate and he goes in? because there's no training involved in that, that's just telling a dog to do something and the dog doesn't give a crap and mostly does whatever you tell it to naturally so it does what you tell it to w. regard to going in a crate. is there supposed to be something more to it?
Sometimes I go to my parents place over lunch. The family dog buddy is very smart and he lays in his kennel when they're at work. I let him out when I come home and I trained him on how to go straight to his kennel without me having to say anything before I leave. How did I do it? I grab a treat, he sees what's going on, and he heads straight to his kennel.
The Houston (?) dog got adopted quick. Thoughts on these?
https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/35599408 - seems chill, wants quiet and little chaos in my place as do I. Purportedly crate-trained and house-trained; thinking I'm gonna want to use a crate for a while so my home office isn't ate.
https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/36184955 - maybe gets a little more hype, but also supposedly good w/crate #life and house-trained.
They will eventuality stop doing that crap when they realize they are going in that create ever-y-day.
both those dogs are too small.
A big plus for Buddy is that the place in charge mandates that the dogs actually go to your spot for 2 weeks as a test run on both sides, so that would be a big plus for everyone vs. just taking a flier on one based on a paragraph of blog. It kind of freaked me out at the shelter that people were walking in and out with a new dog in like 20 minutes and that was that.

different breeds are different and some breeds are pretty tough to crate train etc because they aren't complete idiots and would rather not spend their entire days trapped in a cage that is only slightly bigger than they are. so while it might be kind of nice to have a dog that doesn't mind it, don't pat yourselves on the back too hard because guess what? that dog iq of yours is somewhere around 80.My dogs IQ is in the 120s. We had her tested. V smart dog. The smartest dog. Just a really impressive canine is what I'm saying.

Also y-l_a bro just got a dog, very cute and great with people. Huge bad person to other dogs though, and not just my two dogs who really dgaf about him but it seems like all dogs. Tried at others peoples houses to get him acclimated, took him to bluestem with other dogs and at his own house. He just seems to really be a big jerk when it comes to other dogs. a true "crate-trained" dog doesn't need to be told to go to the crate. Example, my dog knows when I have keys in my hand I'm leaving the house, she goes in her crate. If we're on the couch watching TV the dog lies down in her crate, etc etc
both those dogs are too small.
If I got a dog of the size you deem desirable, my entire apartment would effectively be the crate. When I went to the shelter, even the "medium" dogs looked to me like they'd be totally claustrophobic in my setup.

Our dog goes when I start brushing my teeth in the morning and when I come home after he does something stupid like taking food from one of the kids when he's alone with them and my wife.
I applied for Buddy earlier today (@gooch, you're a reference). Saw after I submitted that he requires a yard but I think if they home inspect me they'd find my courtyard and surrounding areas and as much as I'd have him out and about would be adequate.

don't let them mind-trick you into thinking they're doing you a favor in giving you an abandoned dog for $400. whatever you offer buddy is better than what he has now. also dogs don't need yards, and honestly any dog organization that doesn't know that is pretty suspect.
I mean, I certainly prefer my outdoor surroundings to a yard, and I'm sure the dog would too. Maybe I'll skype you in when they're at my place and you can browbeat them for me.
Thank you for your application for Buddy. I am so sorry about the delay in replying to you. Things get very busy around here.
Buddy will be placed on trial adoption soon with someone who applied for him before you. We hope it will work out for him.
We do have many other great dogs available so please keep an eye on our website and let us know if there are others that appeal to you. There is no need for a new application each time; you can just email me directly.
Asher has been through a lot and really wants a person to himself. He is learning to have better manners with other dogs but does have jealousy issues. Asher is nervous around kids so we would prefer a kid-free home for him.
He warms very slowly to men and after a few days, with love and giving him space and treats, he is in. He is not the type of dog you can instantly pet and just needs a little time and then loves it. He is then a very snuggly boy. Loves his walks, car rides, such a doll.
Something happened in his past so his foster is working on him being lightly touched on his backside and neck to get him comfortable. Making tons of progress.
I would not recommend that dog

Asher is a nice little dog. However he is a terrible barker. Since you live in an apartment I think he would cause some trouble with your neighbors. Let’s keep looking ;)
There was one dog earlier that was deaf. Deaf dogs don't bark, but you have to rely solely on hand signals for commands. I almost adopted a deaf dalmatian instead of my current one.

Yes, all the ones from this place I've been focusing on lately mandate a 2-week trial period, which I agree would be great. That's why I'm trying to exhaust all options at that place before going through 16 pages of petfinder again.

about six months for fun stuff, and then you get to roll the dice on how long you get to take care of a crotchety old man dog gradually becoming incontinent and insensate.
Dachshunds live about 14-17 years. He's a mix but that should be a good estimate. My mom and grandma each had a dachshund and I think they lived to be more than 20.

OK, I'll reject Nash if the lady writes back and says he'd be great. I've got some options from petfinder saved that I'll post when I can get back here for a while.

I mean maybe you should meet him in person and see how much pep he currently has. Then estimate that his pep will decrease by about 10% per year.
Back to petfinder. Weigh in.
Tosh is still there. I don't see anything off-putting in his description other than it might be a 2-hour drive each way to get him.

Theodore: Not too much info there but from PR, which would be elite.
https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/35277358
Reggie: I like a lot of the description, but it's ambiguous whether a yard's required. They say he can't be crated and doesn't need to be and won't do anything bad in here.

Dora: Lot to like about this dog, specifically says she'd be good in an apartment and can entertain herself looking outside or at a reflection while I'm working. I wasn't planning on leaving everything open in my place, but if she doesn't eff anything up, whatever.

Also, it's just past 3am and I just finally escorted a bunch of canadians out of my place and lol at how a dog's gonna figure into all this.

"Medium." I agree, she looks like she could be bigger than I want.
I keep going back to Tosh.

Yeah, this isn't a process that's made better with the internet. You should just go down to the humane society/arl/aspca, it's going to become apparent which dog you'll want when you meet him/her.

Why no gray labs? That'd be tight. My wife's lab is for intents and purposes, white. Not very blonde.
Go XXL, you won't regret it.

Your son has long hair. Cute dogs btw.
Finally got a hold of Tosh's foster, but now she's got Tosh meeting potential adopters this weekend so I have to wait until after to see if he's still an option.
The operator of Dora et al got back to me after I gave more specifics on what I'm looking for and has now enthusiastically raised the option of Dina. https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/36269844 There are no details on the site but the lady says "Dina would be a super choice for you she is athletic enough but also mellow enough for apartment living and is very well socialized with people and other dogs and has great house manners is crate trained and housebroken and has a perfect temperament." That all sounds good, and the dog looks cool in the pictures that look like they were taken with whatever cell phone camera you people determined is the shittiest.
She says "Dora would be good too but a little more energetic."

don't get an old dog. previous owner used up all the good years and wants to stick you with the vet bills and the convalescence and the dying.
Those are just what keep coming up when I search for dogs that are going to be most suitable for here. There's a reason for that
Don't be guilted into getting Dina, she's so old and broken. Getting a dog is a huge emotional and financial investment, it's okay to be selfish.
If you don't mind giving your vacuum a daily workout, get a German Shepherd.A full grown German Sheppard would literally take up half of his place.
Pro tip: You should get them as a puppy though.

Like, I think they'd be fine if you weren't a lazy ass/completely unaware owner. They are smart and listen well and aim to please. Think of them like border collies (Lassie) but more blue collar looking.
If I didn't have sporting breeds but just wanted a dog this is what I would get, even with a young family.
I'd go with Oliver. Just look at that face. Also a great name.

Look at some Google images, most are fairly stocky in build for smaller dogs. I don't think a miniature is required, the regular ones should be less than 50lbs, probably some in the 30-35 pound range. Nearly every flatbed pickup you see in MT has at least one on the back, so they are very common fairly close to you. Honestly it's a perfect breed for you. The only downside is sometimes they're not best around kids because they tend to try to herd them, but they're not aggressive or anything. Just damn good dogs. Tough as crap, too.
if you're looking at at cattle dogs now, you may as well just get a border collie (the king of dogs) and be done with it.
Gypsy would do well with adopters who know and understand Border Collies and can make Gypsy's personality shine!
the short hair border collies are fun because at some point in history all the smart stuff associated with border collies was bred out of them (along with their long hair). so it's more like a regular dog and doesn't have to have a job to do all the time. great dog.
Yes, they make retractable ones, also I'm sure there are off leash parks close around
Gypsy is the barkiest dog they have at that place. You pull up in the parking lot and hear some dog going nuts from deep inside the facility, and it turns out to be Gypsy. I'm not going back to that shelter. It's rough ridin' crazy.
The place with Ellie is supposed to respond w/in 7-10 days from yesterday. They bring the dog to your place and size it up and tell you if it'll work or not.
that gypsy dog looks hot as eff, too bad about her being barky. border collies shouldn't bark much, but with mixes, you never know.

Really sucked. I was walking to the dog area thinking how it was gonna be annoying AF hearing that barking dog while I was meeting my new dog. Go in the holding area and the loudest dog lunges at me into the glass barking her as off and I look up at the nametag - Gypsy.

Her head is proportionally smaller than the body, so the human said there were some special collars/harnesses that work better. Found a Sonics tag though. https://sportsfanimals.com/collections/nba-seattle-supersonics-dog/products/seattle-supersonics-dog-instant-id-tag
I've got plenty of leftover tennis balls. I use new ones for actual tennis myself every time.
The human will get me the instructions on feeding. It was hard for her to break down exactly when and how much b/c she feeds all her dogs together, but she's gonna work something up for me by Friday.
This came up as a related item on one of your links, and I'll need something, but I think the 2nd one will be more useful for what I'd be doing, and I could use it to get her around on the light rail and then fold it up and stuff it in a backpack.

We started feeding our dogs Blue Buffalo dog food instead of Purina One. We noticed a lot less shedding and they seemed to digest the food better. You can order it off of Amazon and the price is about the same as what I have seen at pet stores. We are also feeding them a supplement called Dino-vite. The jury is still out on that whether it is worth it or not.
How many #'s we got here trim? 40ish?

real single-ingredient
great lengths
Naturally high in protein

Thank you, Costco, for offering these bully sticks at such a wonderful price!! Bully sticks are my dog's favorite of all treats. I withheld them for a while when I learned what they were made of (bull penises), but eventually gave in because there are no other treats that he goes so absolutely ape over. (I just try not to think about it!) He's an 85 lb goldendoodle and can polish one off one of these in 30 minutes or less!
I need smaller size sticks. I have a small dog and he LOVES "his" bully sticks however the bags of sticks I received from online were predominantly very large sticks, apparently from very well endowed bulls. My poor dog couldn't even get enough in his mouth to chew on it, very frustrating for him. When I find them at a warehouse I pick through the bags looking for predominantly small sticks, which I have found. I moved and, alas, can't find them at all at the warehouse in my new town so I went online. Is there anything I can do?
I've been buying bully sticks for my dogs for several years now, and love the fact they last a long time, help clean their teeth, and are safe. What I didn't like was the variability in size of other brands that sell them by length and count. A bag with 25 x 12" bully sticks could contain sizable sticks or pencil thin ones. More often than not, they were on the thinner side. Cadet sells them by weight, which is perfect. You will get more sticks if they are thinner, and less if they are thicker. I think this is very fair. Costco price is the best I could find online.
Hi, I buy these bully sticks all the time. My daughter was buying them at her Costco and sending them to me. Yaaaa I found them online now I can order my own. My dog loves these, they are his favorite treat. Some are large and some are smaller. What my dog loves most about them is they are not smooth. They have lots of warts (bumps) on them and that is his favorite.
Hmmmm! would like to know who tasty these, says in description wholesome and good tasting, was this a human or dog?? My dogs love the bull sticks have purchased several bags from Costco great price compared to everyone else. "They do stink to high heaven when they are chewing on them" Last a long time, even Great Dane has a treat that last, rest are gone in a second or two...will buy from Costco over and over again.
Great human too. We all went to a bar for the tryout.Great looking pooch Trim.

where do you guys fall on the issue of docking and/or cropping?
for some reason cropping seems bad to me but docking doesn't, i guess because they can't feel pain in their tails
I think he means when they are tiny pups and docking their tail is like pinching a nightcrawler in half.
(I have PTSD from seeing this happen to a friend's gshp litter.)
The kibble she is currently on is Fromm (and I rotate through the proteins) and a couple of spoonfuls of canned food, this time around I bought Evanger’s. But don’t feel like you have to keep her on that – there are tons of good dog foods. I usually look them up here –
https://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/
For God's sake just walk to the Target on 2nd Ave and buy a bag of dog food. They even have some hippy natural dog food there.
Relevant, I forgot to get dog food on the way home last night and didn't remember until this am so the dog only got a quarter portion :frown:
I threw a bunch of dog treats on the floor to make up for it.
I don't even understand the distinction between food and treats.
This should be as routinized as car maintenance. I want to be told exactly what fuel to put in her, and when to go get oil changes and 30K-mile service, etc.
Trim, dogs eat their own crap so your choice of dog food at this point isn't really important. sys is also giving you bad advice, my dog has the luxury of having 168 acres that he uses every day yet we still have to keep him on a diet. I don't do all of the work with and for this dog for him to die early of diabetes. He got a good dice roll, that has nothing to do with your dog.
Also crate training your dog is the easiest and most important thing you can do for her and yourself.
Trim, dogs eat their own crap so your choice of dog food at this point isn't really important. sys is also giving you bad advice, my dog has the luxury of having 168 acres that he uses every day yet we still have to keep him on a diet. Sys' advice wasn't necessarily bad. He told Trim what his own experience was. There are plenty of dogs out there that manage their portion control just fine. There are also plenty of dogs out there who would attempt to eat an entire bag of food in one sitting, if they have the opportunity. Some breeds are more prone to be gluttons than others.
I bought 2 bags of what I guessed was the correct Fromm stuff. One should be here by the time the human is so I'll know if it's the same stuff and exactly how much to dole out. She's also bringing pumpkin I think that she says is good to mix in when changing foods.
As with everything I'm not an expert on, my point is that I just want to be told by the human that's been feeding this dog for 3 months exactly what she's found works best and I'll blindly keep doing that vs. researching alternatives or g'n af about how much it is. I stick to directions well.
I got a softshell (?) somewhat portable crate that I expect I'll have set up most if the time but I don't know how much I'll insist on using it. I gathered Betty doesn't eff w/things in the house, but I'll have it in case. It was more for trying to use on trains, users, boats, etc. before I'd have to resort to buying that service dog harness.
Exciting day tomorrow! I've even already made my first sacrifice by declining an afternoon Sergio binge sesh so I could get everything cleaned up here and not be hung over.
Sergio's drinking again.

the issue is that the majority of dogs out there are dumber than the food that they're eating
are they great companions? sure, that doesn't make them the brightest bulbs in the socket
dog's mind's eye: is that food? hmm, i'm not sure. i will eat it just in case and i will keep eating it in case it goes away or in case i'm never fed again. wow this tastes more like a rubber hose than food but i'll eat it anyway b/c it kinda tastes good

I think so. The human didn't think she was too attached to it, but I haven't thought of alternatives. As Jason's been involved through a bunch of this and he's going to Helmet w/me next month, I figured she'd just be named retroactively after the album.

If I'm open to alternatives, what do I say in the meantime? I don't think I'd want her to go nameless for that long, so we'd probably need to have a one-off online auction. Don't I need a name for her when I get her licensed and to the vet and stuff like that?
just make her do w/e you want
dogs are wolves and wolves are evolved to go days wo eating; it's no big deal if she doesn't eat for a day or two. she'll eat whenever her hunger reaches a point in her mind where it's more important than her anxiety about being in a new place and/or having to eat in cramped quarters.
she'll crap when she has enough newly digested food in her large intestine that some needs to come out.

Yeah, I'd considered that as a negative. I actually tried to create some competition by getting down there myself and pretending I was eating, but after I got up she just mimic'd me and nosed around it too w/o actually eating.

That's an acceptable food location, don't change itAgreed. Plenty of room there.

Exactly right.
she probs needs a real crate but whateves. she will not want to use it unless she's been crate trained. otherwise she will hate your unholy guts until she gets used to it and then all of the sudden it will be the coolest thing in the world to her, like her first apartment or whatever
if you think you will need to put her in it for some reason, you'll be able to change her mind with food. if you don't, just punt it, it doesn't matter.
sys, you're her favorite other gE'r.

Do you have a dog named after the protagonist of the series "True Blood"?
So far she's good in the front seat or the back of my jeep when the back seat's folded up. I'm gonna move some stuff around so I can fold the back seat back and throw her new favorite towel back there and have her sit back there. Seems safest.
One of my buddy's pit-mixes freaks the eff out if you drive over rumble strips. Goes apeshit. Kinda annoying. I only know this because he also did not crate train his dog and when we went camping the dog had to ride in the cab.

you need to get her off leash time. leashes aren't good for dogs.

you should probably just stop rewarding her unless she becomes an bad person
you can over-reward a dog. food rewards are mostly about communicating what you want her to do to her. once she gets the idea, she doesn't need constant rewards to do it.
you don't really have to be much of an bad person. a stern tone and harsh look does a lot to a dog as far as correcting bad behavior. so far it doesn't sound like she's had bad behavior though.
going forward i wouldn't reward after feeding. pooping, i would just reward her verbally. also a little activity will shake the bowels loose. if i want mine to poop (like say she hasn't pooped all day but i'm about to go out for the evening) then i just throw the ball for a min or two and she'll have to stop and poop.
it's probably a good idea not to be too stern at first. she barely knows you.
the big trend in training these days is positive only reinforcement. i don't agree with that necessarily, i think there's a place for fear as motivation, but i do think it's best to lean much heavier on the positive stimuli. in general, my feeling is that positive is really good at helping them do stuff you want them to, and and negative is good at getting them to not do stuff you don't want them to.
dogs appreciate a stern leader. they crave it really. their driving force is to please you, and they like knowing when they aren't. it has to be immediate though or they will get confused. dogs are essentially trump voters.
My brother's wife was attacked by a dog yesterday, had to go to ER with bites all over her hands and legs. Luckily not more serious. Dog and owner yet to be found.
Everyone here loves the idea of Payton, plus it'll be easy to get the matching hoops jersey that won't be too cumbersome.
At that vet visit, they gave me what I thought would be a pill for fleas. I finally gave it to her Sunday and it turned out to be a relatively big, chewy thing. It took a while for me to get her to go for it. Next day, she wasn't eating well and was straining while shitting. She also wasn't being so picky about where to piss, which I thought was a good thing (free-range, albeit outside). By last night, she was liquid shitting (diarrhea) and generally seemed human flu-like. Carried on to this morning. I think she was associating the flavor food from when it started with being sick; I was able to get her to eat a different flavor, so that's good.
I since read this can all be a side effect of the particular flea stuff I gave her. I emailed the vet, who said she's not seen that before but would note it and to come in if it lasted a few more days. Then I called the dog trainer, who we had a complimentary session set for this afternoon, to cancel. When I told her what was going on, she instantly knew of the side effect to that particular medicine and how it would only happen the first time and that the sickness would be just like a 48-hour flu.
Why does the dog trainer at some generic suburban petsmart know all that, but the vet doesn't?
How much vetting did you do on this vet?
Was this a heartworm pill with flea crap in it?
crap's getting solid'r. Not solid enough for me to even attempt to pick up out of the bushes it melt-merged into, but solid'r.Dogs get sick, it happens. Usually when they do it shows up as diarrhea. I know when I got my first pup I was constantly worried about her. But 99% of the time it's just a day or two, or something weird they ate, or in your case a side effect of medicine.
Make sure her bowl is full of water, give her lots of bathroom breaks, she'll be fine, dogs are incredibly resilient and quick healing creatures.
She just shat pretty well, both to wear I could and had to pick it up as it was visibly sitting atop these palm-ish leaves in the courtyard.

Is it natural for them to lick their asses (for cleaning?) after shitting? I've been discouraging it, but maybe they're already evolved for it.

shame her.
I was hoping that Dexter's mild separation anxiety would start to subside as he settled in to living with me, but it looks like I'm going to have to work with him to break it. It should be fun. Who wants to help me shop for toys?My parents dog has such bad separation anxiety, that he licks his paws to death and has scars now from licking the same places over and over. :frown:
You should hang a sign around her neck that says I pooped on the sidewalk, take her picture and post it on social media. That should teach her a lesson she will never forget.shame her.
We were actually on the way to try to infiltrate the amazon go store, but we went right back home and I've been giving her a look of disappointment since.
tell me a little more about when (when in the outing) she is shitting and where she has gone before and where she is going next. she is on leash for the entire outing?
Try stopping in some acceptable places a few minutes into the walk and use the poop time command
What is the appropriate negative reinforcement thing to do instantly if/when she's shitting in the sidewalk, that won't have the humans that thing she's cute regardless of what she's doing calling the cops on me?
That "poop time" thing doesn't seem to work at all.
i think she's decided that the courtyard is too close to where she lives for acceptable shitting so she's avoiding it (when she first arrived, she prolly wasn't real sure where she was living or where would be a good place for shitting, now that she's had a while to figure it out, she's made her decision and it's not the courtyard).
i'd also guess that there is something about walking around where you walk her that she doesn't consider ideal for shitting, so she's probably holding off until a better time. then when she sees that you're heading back home she has to abandon her preferences and just evacuate where she can. it may be the leash, it may be you aren't walking her to where she wants to crap, or the area is too busy or maybe you walk her in different directions and sometimes you go where she wants but sometimes you don't and she can't predict it.
the shitting on the sidewalk early in the walk doesn't really fit with that so much. but i'd still lean that way. at least with the having decided the courtyard is too close part.

if you can pick her up with out getting the ass part of her near you, just pick her up and move her to where you want her. that will beth move the crap before it comes out (hopefully) and she won't like it, so it's a negative stimulus.
That "poop time" thing doesn't seem to work at all.
you have to teach it. to me it's easier to just figure out what they want to do, but if you want to control her shitting, it's pretty easy. dogs don't preserve much dignity in the face of food.
Hmmm, other than the 4-6 sidewalk shits (1 when she was sick, the rest this last week), and once on the thanksgiving trip to my buddy's yard, every crap has been in the courtyard. And in places within the courtyard that she doesn't play in. Including like 10 minutes ago. The deeper rough areas of the courtyard are def her preferred crap spots.

Yes, I'd much rather just figure out what she wants and come up with a crap plan that works for both of us, but this past week has thrown everything in limbo.

while she's actually pooping in the courtyard repeat "poop time", or whatever phrase you want, a few times and do it every time until she gets it. i use "go poop" "go pee" and when she's just dicking around in the morning she gets a "go potty". it probably all sounds the same to her, but it works thankfully. used to live in a limited acceptable pooping area like you and it made life much easier to train her to do it on command. doesn't really matter now that i can put her in the backyard for 20 minutes and let her do whatever tf she wants.
but your dog also hates me so making her poop probably isn't going to gain me any favors
Maybe she just doesn't have to crap ever-y-time you go outside.
no, punishments have to be immediate or they won't understand.
also a mile walk is plenty long to shake poop loose. she probably waits as long as she can and then unloads from the activity.
after she shits in the courtyard, is she acting like she expects a walk asap?
Work on rewarding the hell out of her for whatever command you want to poop. My dog knows "potty"/leak and "more potty"/duce. Works pretty well to get her to go when she is out on a walk and I get her in a spot I want her to crap in. It's weird, but you have to celebrate her shitting in the right spot, while repeating your catch phrase, like she is making a renaissance masterpiece.
Then why are you talking about punishing your pup?
Needing to get to a spot for the game, I ran her around the courtyard and even around the building to try to shake the crap loose. Nope. Out of time, walked her down towards the stadium among many seahawks fans going (marching?) that way too. She crap in the middle of walking across a street and trailed it up onto the sidewalk. Couldn't even pick it all up between the wetness and cars running over the street crap. Humans were no help in the shame game. Even the ones that stepped in the crap and subsequently saw the crap'r Payton were all "oh was that from youuuuuuuuu? Cute dog!!!" because she was in her 'hawks jersey. If it truly upsets you this much, I'd suggest hiring a dog trainer to work with her. We had one that worked with our dog for the entire first year of her life. Shes not perfect, but she's a hell of a lot better than most 2 yr old dogs.
So I apparently can't take her away from my building unless she happens to crap first. crap on command isn't happening, and there's apparently no possible negative consequence for when she shits on concrete. Seriously, if one of you people thinks you can fix this, let's work out a deal to have you come up and do so. I'm sick of reading the internet about how this theoretically should be solved.
If it truly upsets you this much, I'd suggest hiring a dog trainer to work with her.
no walks without shitting first. not until she's ready. let her off the leash in the courtyard.
i still think the picking her up method is the way to go...maybe better than punishing her is to keep a close eye on her when you suspect shitting. usually dogs will give you a little bit of indication and that's your cue to run/drag her to some vegetation.

I let her off leash in the courtyard all the time. I don't see that it has any significant effect on crap'n. The problem with the "no walks" concept in this training is that walks are the only alternative to bed #life. Like, a walk isn't some fun outing, it's how we get anywhere. So no walk means imprisonment. I don't think this training concept works here. For example, Saturday, we had no choice but to walk b/c out of time. Tuesday, she has a bath appointment across downtown. Am I to take her to the courtyard an hour early in the hopes she shits and I can reward her with the walk we have to take regardless and possibly end up there an hour early? It all still depends currently on her whim to crap. And I'm not even sure I want to warp her mind to crap only in the courtyard. I want her to crap when she needs to crap, just in a dog appropriate spot.
I've been able to train sitting, shaking hands, getting in her shirts/coats, etc. because I can force those actions to happen and be able to reinforce them. I can't force crap, and I certainly can't prevent crap.
No, there is no warning, no way to suspect shitting. She walks like normal and then stops and shits. This latest one was mid-crossing a street, so obviously no warning sign.
Like the hypothetical aggieville death trap sidewalk trees, downtown seattle has dog crap cutouts of the pavement ever-y-where, some even with city-provided shitbag dispensers. That's ultimately the mystery: why in the courtyard when she shits, does she find the grassiest, most dignified green space to drop her load, yet in the real world, she foregoes all that for shitting in the worst spots possible among humans?
I'm guessing some of this behavior may be from anxiety or something. Like she gets super anxious around a large groups of people and feels the need to drop a deuce.
This lends itself to my burgeoning theory that she is giving clues about the upcoming sidewalk shits and you just aren't paying enough attention.

Latest data point: took her to the courtyard way early before the aforementioned appointment. No piss, no crap. She'd pissed in the morning. Cautiously walked her to the appointment w/o incident. Pushed my luck after I picked her up by going even further from my place to a bar I knew allowed dogs. Not long after leaving there, and after she passed up plenty of grass/tree things, she started shitting while walking on the sidewalk. I was able to pull her over a bit to the parking lot we were adjacent to, but she still left some nuggets on the sidewalk, and it's not like the parking lot was that better of a spot.
But for her having sidewalk crap that time this week after courtyard crap'n, I'd know the problem is what I laid out above. Whatever it is, it's out of my skillset. Time to throw money at this situation. It'll be a hell of an email I send to the trainer prospects.
I think we're gonna need to see a transcript of this email. I'm pretty hooked on the sidewalk shitting storyline TBH
i know a trainer in the seattle area. she does stuff like this i think, not obedience stuff mostly. kinda flaky, but most trainers seem to be. christine hibbard.
If you think sidewalk shitting is bad. Dexter's separation anxiety has manifested itself as car pissing now. It doesn't matter how I try to prep him for a car ride right now, nor the length of the trip, nor how I interact with him during the trip. He is going to pee. Yesterday I played fetch with him for 20 minutes. He moved his bowels and pissed several times. I gave him a treat, we got in the car and made a 10 minute trip to the bank drive thru. I had him lay down in the passenger seat so I could pet him and talk to him throughout the trip. He didn't get up for the whole trip so I thought we finally had success. Nope, he had just peed on himself and laid in it instead. It's OK pms we have a miniature schnauzer that poops where ever because it is old and you will just find turds around the house

Yes, my vehicle is too small for it to fit it in there set up, if that is what you are getting after. He still displays a lot of signs of anxiety even at my house where he has mostly settled in now. It's just going to take a lot of work. I think he spent far more time in a shelter than they led me to believe when I adopted him. Pit Bulls are known for having anxiety issues fairly bad, anyway. He will get there eventually.

My last dog began to do that when he got older. I'm not so concerned about the action itself. I would like to subdue the anxiety and fear that he feels. I want my pet to be happy.

Maybe cross post with Killing Animals thread... Looking for a versatile bird dog. Mostly for pheasants, few quail, retrieving dove. Something not real high strung. Buddies all hunt labs, but was looking at German Shorthairs and Vizslas. Any advice or recommedations?Update:

what kind of dog is "bloodthirsty warpig"?
Our 2 year old border collie has now killed 4 squirrels in the last couple of months.
why is your wife getting her own bird dog, do you guys not hunt together?
Rubes is definitely the nickname of choice. Trying to stick to Ruby till she gets her name figured out. I will be doing some pre training for a few weeks, then sending her to a buddy's house to get her schooling. I got her from a guy that runs a guide service south of KC who's dog had more pups in her litter than what he wanted to keep.

Linebacker dogs are my favorite, such crapheads
This story is related to the #longbone above. I wish I could find more toys for him to play with. The only things he shows interest in the majority of the time are bully sticks and stuffed animals.
Payton isn't into toys either, at least not as they're to be used. She doesn't do the bite/pull thing at all; all those toys are worthless other than for things to chew on. She chews on the parts humans are to hold because they're easier to mouf grip. She doesn't fetch for crap, but likes playing with fetching dogs and being a linebacker when the other dog tries to take the ball back to their human.
So far, I like what I'm seeing from her and this longbone.
She's inched a little closer, but is still both aggressively chewing it and keeping her distance now.
Dexter did not fetch at all for a while either. I had to coach him up. I started with a stuffed squirrel that he liked. I would take if from him and throw it, wait for him to come back to the couch, steal the squirrel back, get him excited about it, and throw it again. We did that for a while until he started bringing the toy back to me. Once he figured out the return part of it, we moved outdoors and started the process over with a nylon mesh frisbee toy designed for dogs. Fetch is one of his favorite activities now. It's one of my favorites too because he's athletic as crap but still uncoordinated.

I haven't found anything she likes to keep in her mouth or really anywhere on her for long enough to warrant going to get it if I take it and throw it. For a little bit, the squeaky football worked, but she lost interest in the ball entirely after a couple days. Also, her instinct when she gets possession of anything from anywhere/one is to take it back to her bed, not back to where it came from.
I couldn't even say the word "ball" without my dog going nuts. We started spelling it and she learned that too. Dogs are amazing.Dexter did not fetch at all for a while either. I had to coach him up. Dexter did that too when I started trying to teach him fetch. I just followed him to his bed and played tug of war for a bit. I'd wait for him to get worked up a bit while playing tug of war, take possession of the toy from him, toss, and repeat. Once he learned that he might as well bring me the toy, we switched to playing fetch with designated toys. I keep his fetch toys in a closet now and he goes berserk whenever he sees you pull one out.
I'm sorry dax :frown:

My prospective dog sitter for schemePAK flaked so I probably have to pay someone/thing. Here's the prospective hotel-ish places:

http://www.citydogclub.com/services/dog-boarding.html
http://www.downtowndoglounge.com/pet-boarding.htm
http://www.woofplayandstayseattle.com/services.html
Then there's this thing that has people that'll put the dogs up in their own place.
https://www.rover.com/seattle--wa--dog-boarding/
What's better? That last option would have her in the situation closest to normal and I assume she'd have way more attention paid to her than at a place hosting dozens of dogs, but who tf are these people that I'd be leaving her with?
BW post another pic of rubeskie(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170215/aea4dcc59c5f81bcf49e109eeb5ab127.jpg)
If you got the right person, a person would be better. But getting the right person might be tricky so you are going to get more consistent results choosing a hotel. Also, once you chose one, you should stick with the same place (unless it is terrible) so she gets used to the place and people for future trips.
BW's dog is just unbelievable
She seems to hate the "surf & turf" flavor of the artisan dog food. I'm used to her taking a day off of eating about every 10 days now for whatever reason and then eating double the next day, but even when she's not on that off-day and if she's not on her catch-up day, if the surf & turf's in the bowl, she just picks at it and eats 1/2 at best. It's weird b/c I love human artisan surf & turf myself.

I send my dog to hunt with buddies all the time and it's no biggie. He doesn't give a crap, just wants to hunt. If we vacay they usually stay with a friend and get the royal treatment and don't want to come home.

Do you know how difficult it is to design/alter a dog jersey via twitter without having the dog there?
Check out what Mrs. Gooch did to this giant bootleg Payton jersey I got! I mumped up and had her make the chest part too small which jacks up the sleeve/head hole relationship, so it's gonna need some slight mod'n to be fully functional, but it's close to being the GOAT dog gear.

Kimball is sad to hear about humans parting with their best buds.
Unrelated to the c-word at the bar, currently in the course of a $300+ dog ER visit.Hope she's ok.
She isn't missing a beat, other than the medicine making her a little drunk-appearing when wandering around. No aversion to dogs big or small either, but the doc told me to restrict her from playing hard until the hole's all healed up. It already looks quite a bit better.
I've been having pretty good luck w/her eating and drinking well, putting the stuff in a mod'd bowl by her bed if necessary, and having her take down the antibiotics by sticking them in a meatball. Not much success w/the painkillers, but she doesn't seem to be having any pain to kill. The bottle says to give up to 3 doses daily as needed. How tf would I know if she needs them?

Also if the vet gave her Tramadol (sp?) It's pretty much worthless. All it will do is make her lethargic. If she is eating and drinking now she is fine and I would toss the BS meds.

Is there a reason you wouldn't apply this same advice to your children? Just CPS concerns?
She does piss out and about much more liberally now, usually in appropriate and discreet locations. I'd still like for her to crap that way too. It'll be interesting to see what happens when I move and she doesn't have her 2 favorite courtyard toilets anymore.

She will be fine. She may get the shits. Even if she does do not freak out and run to the vet. If the loose stool lasts longer than a day then take her to a vet.

What's the tactful way to tell these people who have my dog another 2 days that harness don't go on dogs when they're not being walked?

They say she goes straight to the bed after coming in from walks and getting unleashed and that they've been taking the pictures then and taking the harness off after.
Solved mystery?
Friday night, we were making a lap through the bar, and some mean, older lady started instructing me that I had to put Payton on a leash. She thought I worked there and was yelling about how she was a paying customer. Payton and I just walked unleashed back to the other side. Old lady left but then came back and was yelling at the bartender about it. Bartender explained that unleashed Payton and I stay. Lady said she's afraid she'll be it. Bartender said she hopes she gets bit by something, it won't be by Payton. Lady left permanently. This bar owner "gets it".

Sorry KCFD. Dog SF has been gone a month now. I miss the eff out of him. We're adjusting to the missing him, but also a bit of guilt from having and enjoying some freedom we haven't had in 14 years.
how are you supposed to get a puppy when all the humans in the house work all day?get a dog that's around 6 months or so and already potty trained.. boom problem solved
I had to look up if that lagoon is saltwater. It is. I don't think she drank it though. I think she just hadn't shat before going and got there and played around a bunch and decided she was outside and could crap freely. This dog seems totally mind mumped with life and just isn't sure about anything anymore. T's & P's
The beach is made up a bunch of loose rocks like the meat in a nu-way. I got most of them before the tide (?) suddenly got higher and washed over all of where I still had some fragments to get.
That was awful.

Dogs are stupid (in a good way) and have real short memories. She should forget about all this after a few days. The shawshank idea is spot on for moving the bed back. It's pretty hard to permanently traumatize a dog with just a few days of fireworks. Luckily you don't have to deal with thunder all that much so this trauma of loud noises should not be constantly reinforced.I'm taking her to Canada for the entire 4th of July week next year. rough ridin' fireworks.Just get some doggy Xanax from the vet.
The place I get her artisan food from has dog weed. The problem I'm having isn't so much during the fireworks themselves, but that now, especially as it turns dark at night, she associates the outside with that fireworks noises could start happening. She doesn't want to sleep on her bed that's near a usually open window. I finally got a compromise last night by moving the bed more to the center of the living room. I guess I can shawshank that thing over a few inches every night until it and her are back where they're supposed to be.
Get her a horse-dog friend
You would need a shovel to deal with that things sidewalk shits.(https://media.giphy.com/media/5XrhgZ7mFBrMc/200.gif)

mrs mocat really wants a beagle. they are adorbs but how do you make them not howl all the time? like when you are at work all day don't they just howl and howl and howl?
mocat, as a border collie aficionado, you will not be able to tolerate a beagle. trust me on this one.
beagles eff up everything non stop.
mocat, what have you done?Dodged the beagle bullet is what I've done
lab x what?Unknown
apparently if you change dog foods, you should mix the new food in with the old food a few times to make the transition easier on the stomach. this is more for puppies than dogs iirc

I've read that, but I don't feel like that will help me learn what she likes best.
These new types shouldn't be causing any stomach trauma; they're all supposed to be very comparable ingredient-wise to the existing artisan.
Why is that spooky
good ears and good legs on that dog, mocat. how's his/her brain?Thank you sys. She has a v good brain, rivals my smart border collie (Jazz) from childhood. But she cares way less than borders care about stuff, like balls and frisbees and whatnot. She is however super into squirrels

I've got Payton at a day care place today to see if she does well there, in order to know if it can be a backup boarding place when known dogsitters aren't available. They just sent a "report card" with a bunch of pictures of the action there - there's a dog that looks identical so I can't even tell if there's any pics of mine - and lists the dogs and how they're behaving.

They're great. Like diet border collie

Booked, but going up the Wednesday morning and coming back Saturday, and going to Victoria instead of Vancouver. Beginning and end of the route include driving onto and riding a ferry. Marriott/SPG merged points worked out just right; she'll be pleased.
You guys, my pup is like, pretty good at being off leash? Like, REALLY good about 95% of the time. But if he sees a rabbit or something he'll run off till he loses it (he's not very good at actually catching it). I've been training him by keeping a fuckton of treats on me and when I call him and he comes back, I give him one.
Is 95% about as high as it can get outside of police dogs? Or is that 5% chance not worth the risk of having him run off?
Also, this is never in the city, only out in the sticks.
I think I'm going to make an appointment to have my 15 year wienie dog put down. I've been to the vet's website multiple times but haven't scheduled it yet. He's having seizures more and more often. He has severe separation anxiety when he can't find me, which is a lot because of his blindness and dementia. He's the only dog I've ever had in my adult life and the thought of putting him down instead of letting him die naturally is tough for me. I don't know how to determine that his quality of life is too diminished to justify ending it.
Yeah. It is awful but what is best.Wish I would have done this. Our vet is in Leawood and she wanted him buried at her families place in Shawnee. That was a long drive to the spot. Wouldn’t suggest it.
Kc has some places that come to your house and put them down wherever you want. My mom did it and it was awesome.

He's the only dog I've ever had in my adult life and the thought of putting him down instead of letting him die naturally is tough for me. I don't know how to determine that his quality of life is too diminished to justify ending it.damn i'm really sorry IC. that's rough.
I’m not a pet person but I definitely understand pet grief is real and it sucks like it’s a family member, because they really are.Uhhh...you sound like someone who wants Blinky to haunt you from beyond the grave.

I’ll never take another dog to the vet.Yeah.

My dog was allergic to grain. Switching him to Rachel Ray's grain-free dog was one of the best decisions ever.
They put a lot of garbage in dog food.
Purina Beneful with salmon is my dog's favorite. I've noticed her coat is extra healthy / shiny since we've been using it
What is the weirdest thing you dog has eaten? He got a hold of Breck's grapes last week and it scared the crap out of us. :frown:

When I got mine, the foster gave me some of what was left, which was both grain-in and grain-free Fromm. From looking at things like that site, grain-free generally seemed to have better reviews than grain-in so I went with that and never looked back. A few years back, there was a bunch of news about dangers of grain-free food but didn't seem like anything universally accepted. When my dog had unrelated knee surgery, the surgeon threw in as an aside that I shouldn't use grain-free food. The regular vet agreed, saying grain-in is more complete and preferred unless there's a specific reason for the dog, like allergies, to go grain-free. Meanwhile, the people at the artisan-type dog food stores told me vets are quacks and grain-free is better.
I rocked with the vet and so far my dog seems to like the food better and is more energetic. :dunno:

last week i saw what looked like a wood chip (like a piece of mulch, really) on our counter and our dog was going bananas barking up at the counter. wtf, right? so i lifted her up so she could kind of see it and smell it and then she lunged at it and ate it!I always freak out when our dog starts to chew on / eat wood - worry that he is going to get his mouth full of splinters. I suppose dogs have chewed on wood for millennia without problems but still.
i set her down and got in her mouth and tried to yank it out but it was already kind of in her throat and when I pulled it out there was only like half of it. anyway turns out it was a dog treat that just kind of looked like a piece of mulch. crazy, huh? i bet she was ultra confused.
The only thing my dog goes for that she shouldn’t is discarded chicken bones on the street. And she then walks with them; it hasn’t gotten to where she starts trying to eat it before I can snag it.

Thinking about pulling the trigger on a cowboy corgi.
Since you were thinking about "Pulling the trigger" maybe you could name it after wildcat legend Jacob Pullen?
Or since it's part Corgi go with some Royalty name like henry/phillip/william etc

what breeder did you go through?Taking a chance on a Craigslist ad. A lady in Independence, KS.
One year in to my covid dog. She is pretty great, very smart. I did the adoption thing for the first time. I had previously only had a full breed lab and he will always be my favorite dog. Current pup is like 99% lab from what I can tell. Looks just like a lab, but has a couple markings. I can't tell if the 1% is pitbull (not the singer) or if she is just an bad person from living on the streets. When she does something bad and I get after her, she gives me a look like "I will bite your ass". My previous doggie would just cower. She is very good though and good with the kids. Dogs are great and also a pain in the ass.:worthless:

My mom's husband takes their dogs out to a concert amplitheater in the suburban bay area to run around and play and stuff. It's a big open space and usually no one is around.
Anyway he was walking them there over the weekend and one of them disappeared for a few minutes but came back fairly quickly. When they got home, the dog that disappeared started acting very strangely. Very paranoid and scared. Didn't appear to recognize my mom or her husband, and was randomly ducking and moving like she was seeing things. She would get bursts of energy and run circles in the yard to a point where they got worried enough to take her to an er vet.
They do some tests and the dog is od'ing on meth and ecstasy. She's severely overheating so the vet sedates her and does what they can. They reach out to the pet poison control board who recommends a certain medicine. After calling around 25 pharmacies my mom finally found one that stocks it in Oakland. They get the meds and it seems to help. She had to stay at the vet for 3 more days.
After they took the dog to the vet, my mom was determined to find where the dog got into these substances so they went back out to amplitheater and after some searching found a homeless encampment hidden away around the same place the dog disappeared.
Pretty scary times, but she appears to be recovering fine.

Good to hear the pooch is ok, 7.
Barley, my 11-year-old Golden Retriever, ate a 25mg pot gummy the other night. I tried to make him puke it up to no avail. He did not enjoy the experience as far as I could tell.

Above: Barley enjoying the wet grass this morning.
Update: Bar has a tumor on his stomach that pushes on his right lung causing shortness of breath and some coughing. It also causes a reluctance to eat.
Fortunately, both of these symptoms are currently manageable thru prescription pain med Rimadyl. He remains happy-go-lucky as long as he takes them regularly.
He’s still got too much love to give and we’re cancelling/postponing the euthanasia until he shows signs that he isn’t enjoying life any longer.
Vet says he could be ok as long a few months, but could go at anytime. You never know.

Are there any dog psychologists around here? Over the past week or so, our dog has been getting super excited when he starts to pick up cues from us that it is time to go outside for his walk or bike ride. He's normally moderately excited but all of a sudden he is whining loudly, skittering around the floor like a baby deer on ice and rearing up on his back legs like he hasn't been out of the house in months even though his schedule hasn't changed. I can't figure out why he is doing this.
He's almost four. He has been neutered since just before he turned one.

Not a professional, but how old is he and is he neutered?
what does he do when he gets out there? just kind of mill around smell the ground like normal?Sniffs around in the yard and the curb to check if other canines have pee'd on the curb since he was outside last. Doesn't seem to try and pull on his leash more than usual on his walks / bike rides with me or Mrs SSOC. Once he gets outside, his behavior is basically normal for him. He is absolutely obsessed with pooping in the very center of the street. I think it has something to do with placing the poop where it is elevated above the surrounding terrain but I'm not sure.

Yeah, mine is pretty chill but a surprise person at the door unlocks frenzy mode. Once they are inside it's all love and tail wags.Thankfully, he doesn't freak out too much when people come to the door. Just one or two loud barks to let us know someone is there. He never barks at people / dogs walking by on the street which would be annoying as crap. We are trying to break him from the habit of trying to sniff people's crotches when they come in the house for the first time.
We looked at a dog at Petland. $6k for a corgi.Corgi's are so cool. My kid's friend has one. When it was a puppy, he was running thru our lawn. His little legs were so short that he looked like a caterpillar moving over the top of the grass.

I love corgi's. At Petland you can't just buy a dog, you have to buy a training package, a vet package, a grooming package. They will give you a free dog when/if your dog dies but only if you purchased all food from their stores. lol
I found a corgi breeder selling them for $700 and we may go that route eventually. We have too many things going on right now to get a new puppy.
$6k for a corgi.

Doggie SF needed some shots yesterday. Mrs. SF took her to the vet. The vet is normally pretty great and reasonable, but as I've said, Doggie SF is batshit. She has gotten better on walks when dudes are around but she still side eyes them and if they even look at her she growls at them. Sweetest little crap ever, but some dude treated her bad as puppy or something. Anywho, Mrs SF and Doggie are chilling at the vet and apparently shots "require" an examination. She was like whatevs, well, the examination apparently included touching and Doggie SF was have none of that crap. The vet basically said eff it, and asked other than being a lunatic, is she ok. Mrs SF was like, yeah, she just hates dudes. He said, cool and somehow gave her a couple of shots without getting his arm ripped off and out the door they went. Checked out the bill this morning. $54 "exam" fee. :curse: I mean, shouldn't I at least get a discount if you don't even touch the dog?My sister's friend adopted an old Kuvasz that had previously lived with a Lesbian couple and hated men.

Tragedy struck the gE dog community yesterday and I buried my girl Sookie this morning. HI LULI!
Guys, Doggie SF growled and tried to bite my foot today. She was trying to get at a ground squirrel or something and I used my foot to push her back and she growled and tried to bite my foot. She knew immediately that she mumped up and backed away as I alpha'd her ass to the house and she ran into the kennel. It wasn't too bad, but I had hoped she was over being from the streets. She did this a couple of times with food when we first adopted her, but is loving and sweet as crap 99.9% of the time. She just has that part of her past still in there I guess. She is my first adopted dog. I've normally gotten a pure bred lab that I could have choked to death and they wouldn't even get mad about it. It wasn't too terrible, but I worry a bit about the kids or worse, a neighbor kid. She has only done this a couple of times during specific situations like this, but I don't know. Should I be worried?
That's a fine looking lawn, Tom.

She fired back that maybe you have never seen a tick because it's dry as crap out there bc there are no trees or grass or moisture in Meade. (she is from Osage City)
So Milo is turning 4 in a couple of months but I think her hips are going bad. Basically when she sits now she puts one leg under and is slow to get up.Old neighbor/cop had a k9 and he used to give it lots of glucosamine for joints.
She is fine and full of energy once she gets up but I've definitely noticed her sitting on her "side hip" a lot more this year. When I take her hunting, after a long day, she has trouble jumping back in the vehicle or onto the couch back at the house.
I"ll mention it to the vet here in a couple of months when she gets her checkup but was wondering if anybody had some advice on supplements/etc to give her.
Here is an example of her back legs side sit which is how she sits all the time now.

4 is pretty young to be having hip problems :frown:
Do her back feet turn outwards when she's standing?

Took lady and Milo to the vet the other day for their shots and they are both in good health.Listen here pet doctor man, that may work on KU Karl and Karla when they drop by to get their Chihuahua Reesing his shots after looking at flowers they can't afford at Halings greenhouse but it's not gonna work on me.
Vet tried to pull a fast one on me when he claimed to find some flea feces (it was dirt) on lady and mentioned they have some product I could buy and kill them in 2 hours.
I gave them a bath yesterday and no fleas were found.
My stupid dog that my wife and daughters love more than anything jumped out the window of my wifes car on sunday while they were driving.
ER Vet said probably tore up her knee
She's about 50 pounds of Mutt, anyone have experiences with surgury vs letting it go?

They did Taters ACL. If the dog is older and not in pain vs a young, active dog was kind of how they presented our options.

after spending a bazillion dollars on my last best pal, I got insurance for the latest. its like $40 a month but that also covers shots and some visits or something. You can get it cheaper without the shot add on, but it prob works out to be about the same. This will only work for you if you have a time machine though.

Pets seem like something you should definitely self insure on. In fact, I think the list of things worth insuring is pretty short. Life, health, home, auto (by law). Am I missing anything?

Travel insurance should probably be something I should look in to...........

Ours is young and very active. before the injury she ran with my wife multiple days a week. Not hunting active, not really around other dogs either.
kstate quoted 4k for the procedure which I was hoping would be cheaper.
