So they omitted one other detail from the listing:

Asher is a nice little dog. However he is a terrible barker. Since you live in an apartment I think he would cause some trouble with your neighbors. Let’s keep looking ;)

There was one dog earlier that was deaf. Deaf dogs don't bark, but you have to rely solely on hand signals for commands. I almost adopted a deaf dalmatian instead of my current one.

I'm not sweating the dog having the ability to bark.  I've passed on the deaf dogs; that's asking too much out of a first-time dog have'r.

That Michigancat(dog) will need a lot of grooming. Rusty looks like a stud.

Nash? http://www.savinggreatanimals.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=10520679

Shorter commitment (because as soon as you start to really like him he is going to get old and die).

Rusty???? http://www.savinggreatanimals.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=10455695

Yeah, that was the main neg.  How long until he's too old to do fun stuff and how long until he's dead?

Do any of these places let you do a trial run? Be nice to make sure you and the dog are a good fit and you aren't getting some ahole dog that you hate. would be good to be sure you get a solid long term dog

Yes, all the ones from this place I've been focusing on lately mandate a 2-week trial period, which I agree would be great.  That's why I'm trying to exhaust all options at that place before going through 16 pages of petfinder again.

Depends? Smaller dogs def live longer than big dogs. Smaller dogs also generally don't "wear down" as much (ie arthritis and hip dysplasia type stuff)

about six months for fun stuff, and then you get to roll the dice on how long you get to take care of a crotchety old man dog gradually becoming incontinent and insensate.

Dachshunds live about 14-17 years. He's a mix but that should be a good estimate. My mom and grandma each had a dachshund and I think they lived to be more than 20.

The good news is that even if you do have to carry him to go poop, he is a small dog and maybe you can get a piece of that fake grass that dogs can poop on for your patio. Better than carrying a 60lb dog down a full flight of icy stairs in the winter time.

OK, I'll reject Nash if the lady writes back and says he'd be great.  I've got some options from petfinder saved that I'll post when I can get back here for a while.

Not super old dogs that have bad hips and are too weak/old to even stand on their own.
