dogs can sprain their tails from wagging too much/too hard.  happens to labs a fair bit.

border collies too smart and too serious for such foolishness, obv.

Thanks for the support, guys.  We put Tucker down on Monday and it's been a pretty strange week.

Anyone have dog food they think highly of? Or any you think I should stay away from?

Just got an Australian Shepherd puppy, so need something with high protein/pretty high fat.

Any info is appreciated, thanks.

I feed my lab Taste of the Wild High Prairie.  It had basically the same nutritional specs as blue buffalo and was cheaper.

Primal raw food is good.

After a long time with grain-free fromm, I’ve switched to grain-inclusive nature’s logic and nulo challenger.

My lab had a broken tail when I got her at 7 weeks old. Vet gave me some ointment to rub on it and eventually it worked fine. She's too old for such foolishness now, but there have been multiple times in her life where I've found a random blood splatter on a door jamb or wall where she has whacked it too hard with her tail. Labs are idiots.

My dog was allergic to grain.  Switching him to Rachel Ray's grain-free dog was one of the best decisions ever.

They put a lot of garbage in dog food.

When I got mine, the foster gave me some of what was left, which was both grain-in and grain-free Fromm.  From looking at things like that site, grain-free generally seemed to have better reviews than grain-in so I went with that and never looked back.  A few years back, there was a bunch of news about dangers of grain-free food but didn't seem like anything universally accepted.  When my dog had unrelated knee surgery, the surgeon threw in as an aside that I shouldn't use grain-free food.  The regular vet agreed, saying grain-in is more complete and preferred unless there's a specific reason for the dog, like allergies, to go grain-free.  Meanwhile, the people at the artisan-type dog food stores told me vets are quacks and grain-free is better.

I rocked with the vet and so far my dog seems to like the food better and is more energetic.  :dunno:

Purina Beneful with salmon is my dog's favorite. I've noticed her coat is extra healthy / shiny since we've been using it

Lady and Milo get the generic pedigree dog food unless they are out and then they get some other similar generic brand.

Also bacon grease/pan drippings a couple of times a week along with random collection old deli meat.

What is the weirdest thing your dog has eaten?

Lady once grabbed a loaf of rye bread off the counter and ate the whole thing.

Our Yorkie Poo would throw down on the kids' play jewelry when she was a pup. She would deposit them in the yard.

My dog preferred the taste of dog food with grain as well. I would make up for giving bad tasting food by giving him hot dogs daily.

I had a dog that ate an entire Victoria's secret bra. The gf was very angry about it.

Our dog once ate a squirrel's tail and then barfed it up on our kid's rug. My wife's friend has a dog who once at a trashcan full of used tampons - required a trip to the vet.

last week i saw what looked like a wood chip (like a piece of mulch, really) on our counter and our dog was going bananas barking up at the counter.  wtf, right?  so i lifted her up so she could kind of see it and smell it and then she lunged at it and ate it!

i set her down and got in her mouth and tried to yank it out but it was already kind of in her throat and when I pulled it out there was only like half of it.  anyway turns out it was a dog treat that just kind of looked like a piece of mulch.  crazy, huh?  i bet she was ultra confused.

I always freak out when our dog starts to chew on / eat wood - worry that he is going to get his mouth full of splinters. I suppose dogs have chewed on wood for millennia without problems but still.

The only thing my dog goes for that she shouldn’t is discarded chicken bones on the street. And she then walks with them; it hasn’t gotten to where she starts trying to eat it before I can snag it.
