she might only need to crap once a day some days.  just stick to it until she gets into the habit and then you can walk her without shitting first.  shouldn't take too long.

How will I know when it's safe to walk her w/o having crap first?

Maybe she just doesn't have to crap ever-y-time you go outside.

That's known. The issue is figuring out how to prevent her from randomly and suddenly shitting on the sidewalk. Thus far, the only surefire way is to not go on the sidewalk unless she's already crap in the courtyard, which sucks.

[redacted].

Took her out this morning.  She shat, I chanted, we walked.  Took her out about an hour ago b/c we needed to go somewhere, she pissed twice, wouldn't crap, we went anyway.  Walked about a mile or so, heading back, and she just stops and shits not on a traditional sidewalk but in the middle of this plaza area that the whole city walks through en route to the stadium (or marches through, in soccer's stupid case).

mocat, the artisan coffee place is on the left.

As you can see, there's tree areas and things to crap on everywhere she walk and she sniffs the eff out of them b/c she has to sniff everything that's ever had contact w/a dog before, but she is never interested in using them as bathrooms.  Just walks, and out of nowhere, starts shitting.

Does the punishment of taking away her bed have any negative reinforcement effect when I can't do it until after walking home from the sidewalk/plaza crap?  She's crying, but I'm dubious she knows it's all because of where she shat.

no, punishments have to be immediate or they won't understand.

also a mile walk is plenty long to shake poop loose.  she probably waits as long as she can and then unloads from the activity.

That doesn't explain when she does it like a minute after leaving the courtyard or why it's on the sidewalk out of nowhere instead of in an acceptable area that was/is steps away.

So I bought a security camera and today is the first day I get to spy on the dog while I'm gone. So far she has been sleeping on the floor, then sleeping on the couch then sleeping on the floor again. Also confused af when I talk to her though the built in speaker.

It's pretty adorable

Amazing creatures.

She just laid on the top of the couch watching out a window for like 10 minutes then got back down to the seat part and went to sleep

Partial success?  There's been no sidewalk shits since my last update, but "poop time" is still a complete failure.  I just don't take her out of the courtyard unless she shits, and I take her out every time she shits.  Obviously, that doesn't always match up with when I want to take her out.  But there's been a couple indicators that something may have sunk in, separate from the other efforts.  Twice now, after the original crap and going out, we've returned home through the courtyard where she's promptly crap (on one outing, 2 separate times!).  So I hope that means on those walks home, she could've sidewalk-crap, but chose not to.

I still don't have any idea when I can know anything's been accomplished to where I can go out w/her even if she doesn't crap first, and know that she won't sidewalk-crap and put us back at square 1.

after she shits in the courtyard, is she acting like she expects a walk asap?  when she does that, go for another couple of days to be safe and then you can go back to walking her whenever convenient for you.

I don't think so. Because of the time it takes me to bag and dispose, I've been instantly giving her a treat, and she eats while I clean up. It's always a minute or two before we're walking. She does seem to expect an immediate treat now though when shitting in the courtyard.

Work on rewarding the hell out of her for whatever command you want to poop.  My dog knows "potty"/leak and "more potty"/duce. Works pretty well to get her to go when she is out on a walk and I get her in a spot I want her to crap in.  It's weird, but you have to celebrate her shitting in the right spot, while repeating your catch phrase, like she is making a renaissance masterpiece.

My dog would get a treat for pooping but not for peeing. Sometimes when I let her out (in the back yard) she would pretend to poop and then run back up to get her treat.

Then why are you talking about punishing your pup?

Then why are you talking about punishing your pup?

1) The punishment talk is re: when she nonetheless shits on the sidewalk, as a way to dissuade that specific event, not as a way to encourage on-demand crap.
2) The whole thing you described is what we've been discussing for a few pages and that I said hasn't worked at all.
