lib, make some recommendations.  My place is small, but the building's very pet-friendly with the pet area right outside my door a floor below.  I've seen people use their balconies as a yard of sorts by making sure there's netting on the railings and with astroturf shitters, but I don't think I'd mess w/that much when it's so easy to take the dog to legit places.  I'd want the dog pretty calm inside, but up for running or walking quite a ways.  I also might have to figure out how to get it designated as a service animal so I could take it on the water taxi over to the beach.

When the place tacks on an odd sentence at the end of their description like "Billy loves the company of men," are they talking about me being a man as opposed to a woman or that Billy's gay, not that there'd be anything wrong with that?

It probably means he doesn't like women. Some dogs have a preference.

you should get a young dog, trim.  personally, it's hard for me to imagine ever adopting an adult dog rather than getting a puppy, but some people do that and it works for them.

This feels like one of those things that's almost easier to do in Kansas than a city because there's too many options here, whereas in Wichita I assume you just drive to that big place kind of off 96 and that's probably got all the options in one place.

http://www.seattlemet.com/articles/2014/2/1/25-seattle-animal-shelters-and-pet-adoption-services-february-2014

These 2 look somewhat large, so maybe I'll just drive to one and have a human tell me what I should do.

I like the idea of the older dogs already being largely trained.  Like stepchildren.

I like the eye patches.  Chief Tater Tot looks cool, but that name.  Can those be changed?

There's a Jake, which would work well obvs, but only 1 year old.

here's the thing with dogs available for adoption - not all of them, but most of them, are either dogs with some sort of behavioral issue or they had shitty owners (mostly the shitty owners thing).  and the thing with shitty owners is that they aren't good dog trainers.

you can change a name (really more like add a name).  my dogs have like twenty names each.

if you know what kind of dog you want, you can check for breed specific rescues.  they'll have dogs of that breed and often crosses and similar breeds.  my impression is that those orgs usually keep the dogs longer in foster houses and give them a little more attention prior to adopting them out.

I told my wife I didn't want a puppy so of course she got is a Labrador Retriever puppy, nearly 4 years in I'm still pissed because he still acts like a puppy. Labs are also too codependent, it's annoying.

So the move is to just go to the biggest, most reputable shelters and lay out what my situation is and see what they recommend, right?  I don't feel like the 1-paragraph online descriptions paint much of a picture of how this would all work out.

Is petsmart evil or the same as going to one of these shelters?

I don't know anything about breeds or what I'd want.  But yeah, a lot of these places I'm looking at indicate a fair amount of the dogs are in foster homes already.

I saw that, and if I could get the service dog designation and onto the water taxi, we could go to a native hawaiian restaurant.

Every Petsmart I've been to gets their dogs from a local shelter so they should be fine. If you have an ASPCA or an ARL there they are great too but 99% of shelters are just fine.
