All three...though I don't have a cross bike set up right now. Ride a steel Redline 29er off road and have been commuting on a singlespeed Swobo del Norte lately. Really starting to get addicted to the steel frames...must be my old bones creaking. Next time you're in SF, rent a bike at the wharf, take it across the bridge and around through Sausalito and then to Tiburon. Ride the ferry back to the city.Had an old Trek Steel frame that i converted to single speed, freewheel. Put CycloX tires on that bad boy for a while and used it as my cross bike. That will make you a man (not 40 though).
Do you race cross?Got into it my last semester. I practiced with the KSU team but never competed in a race.

Kind of OT. I live in the city now and kind of ish want to get a bike but like 90% of people who ride bikes look stupid and I don't want to look completely stupid.
Is this possible?
what do you mean stupid? Clothing or gear or what? What city are you in by the way?
I've been raving about Big Poppi in Manhattan here. Good bikes at good prices. The mechanics know their stuff.
Looking into getting a bike and need some advice as to whether I should just grab one at walmart or go to a bike shop. I literally know nothing about bikes and have not had one since freshman year of college.
- This will be for exercise and cruising the neighborhood
-It will be a mountain bike, none of that panzy skinny tire nonsense
-I will not ride on roads with it, only sidewalks and sweet jumps
-I do not want to spend more than a couple hundred dollars
-I will not wear a helmet
Please provide any suggestions of bike models/types as well as any places to purchase said bikes in the kansas city area.

Yeah, don't wear a helmet. Not only do you look cool, but your head bouncing off the pavement after you get hit by a truck or something will look super cool in slo-mo.
just buy a used bike on craig's list
When I was a kid/early teen, my dad was way into all types of biking. His friend and him rode from manhattan to denver one summer, I cant even imagine doing that. Anyway, some of my favorite memories are from boing to the ski places in colorado in the summer and riding the lifts up the mountains, and riding back down. Perfect biking experience. He had a trek 3000 and 8000, I think, and I rode the 3000.
I have a trek 850 or something right now, and barely used it in the 7 or 8 years I've had it, but im planning on riding it to class this coming semester, so maybe ill get back into biking then.
also ride a mountain bike on the road(rebel)what an idiot. these mhkers are scary fucks on the road
idiots with fixies are the worst of the worst.

Yeah, it's ridiculously stupid to ride without one.

FINALLY, it takes some helmet and sidewalk smack to get asava in this thread.
Now asava, tell me what type of bike I should by that is cheap and will serve my purposes.
Also how can it be illegal to ride bikes on the sidewalk? I did it all the time as a kid and the fuzz never hassled me.

you should ask mellis if he knows of anyone getting rid of a bike or to help you look for one in kc. if you aren't going to spend much try and stick to specialized or kona. would be pretty cool if you could find a 29er. did a quick check and didn't see much.
this is pretty sweet. might be able to lowball him...

Worst rough ridin' mechanics in the region, and owners who know nothing about cycling. Pathfinder isn't the best show in the world, but the guys there know wtf they are doing. If they can't handle it, drive to Capps in Topeka or to one of many shops in KC that know their stuff. If you want your bottom bracket threads stripped out, by all means, go to Big Poppis.
treks, specialized, giant are all going to be pretty similar in this price point. The biggest thing is making sure the bike fits you. Specialized and some of the new Giants are doing a weird curved thing with their down tube and top tube of the frame that makes the geometry a bit different than traditional triangle frames. I would stop by a local bike shop in KC and try some out. I don't know any of the good ones but I could ask around. A good bike shop will allow you test ride bikes, and at that price you shouldn't have to bring your own pedals.just buy a used bike on craig's list
I was looking but I really have no idea what model is good or bad. Apparently these Treks are good?

You do get that there is bike culture outside of hipsters right? Not saying that the bike culture created by fixed gears is fundamentally flawed or anything like that, but just because someone likes bikes doesn't automatically make them wear rolled up jeans and and deep v's. also: brooks does not belong to the hipster movement. Maybe you are just jaded by San fran?

I don't think of cardigans as hipster-wear or a Brooks saddle as a hipster thing. I imagine you look very sharp on your bicycle, asava. Not like that sloppy annoying hipster on his fixie.
Looking into getting a road bike, for triathlon. Is it better to try to get a cheap new bike, or find a used one of better brand? I don't want to spend much over $800.
Im thinking about doing the triathlon in mhk, asava thank you so much for volunteering your bike

OK, now that I am work and have a little free time, you deserve to be slapped for this. I'm fully aware that non-hipsters. I mean seriously? I think it's all hipsters? Here are the classes I see regularly:
Fixie hipsters: Complete dangerous assholes - they cut in line at red lights and then try to run them if possible. eff these guys
young casual professionals: Public bikes are really popular with women in this category. the men like classic frame road bikes (this is what I pictured asava fitting into).
folding bikers: they have these obnoxious commuter folding bikes so they can take them on trains at busy times. they look like complete morons when they ride off. eff these guys and their dorky ways
middle aged parents: these people ride like a mile on bike lane roads to the train station and look like they're on a bike safari - packs on each side of the back wheel, neon safety vest, reflective strap for their pantleg, flashing light on helmet and backpack. Usually a big ass trek bike or something, lots of them with empty baby seats. HEY LOOK, DAD'S ON A BIKE.
weekenders: these guys are usually in their full suits and crazy expensive road bikes. they often drive to go to the highway they are riding their bike. Pretty good about traffic laws except for 4 way stops. (most bikes are bad, but these clowns are the worst).
mexicans: Usually riding a chrome kid's bike in the bike lane on the wrong side of the road
There are more, (especially black kids in East Oakland) but this is a pretty good summary.

Get fitted... than go with the bike that "fits" you the best.
Get more bike for your money going used... Cervelo p2 used for example if going for a tri bike.
But if not going to Tri forever, just get a decent road bike with good components.... its the machine not the bike that makes it run.

preferably somewhere near a bart station. Thursday afternoons work best.
So I've got around 5 buddies that live within 2 miles of my house, been talking for the past year about buying a cheap MTN Bike to ride over to their houses when I want to watch some football and get pak'd.did he sell you his helmet too?
Well, ole ben ji finally pulled the trigger on a MTN Bike and bought one off craigslist yesterday. A BAD ASS Magna 21 speed for $75!!! Guy bought it new from Target for $120 and only rode it like 2 times!
I took it for a quick spin around the hood last night and felt like a 12 yr old kid all over again! :D
Guys, i've accumulated two more bikes since the inception of this thread. I think i have a problem. Also, I am into day 3 of my 365 days of commuting. Goin pretty good so far.

have this, it's great. It's good to have a fairly heavy bike for commuting IMO. I've had a lot of flats and finally upgraded my rear tire. Other than that, I've basically had no problems in 2 years of riding almost every day for about 3.5 miles.

To be fair, the front shock on Michigancat's bike is probably worth more than the whole Magna you are riding.
Sweet bike. As I consider riding more and running less, I'm starting to plan for a bike like that. However, I'm still several years from getting one. I have a fifty mile ultra in the training plan for 2015. I'm not quite ready to hang up the running shoes.Bought an entry level road bike off bikesdirect a year ago. All carbon frame, apex group and I will be growing into it for years to come
It won't get sweet air like ben ji so much desires but you will feel like a complete badass keeping a 22mph pace with little effort and breaking 30 with some effort on the flats

BUT HE STILL CANT JUMP CURBS?!?! Whats the point? I'm thinking about putting some 10k rims on my 1989 civic, that should really show everyone I mean business when it comes to cars.
The New Magna!Had to look back at The Magna. Never heard of the brand.
I never ride either of my bikes.. Went through a stage where I did.. Now it just seems like a hassle
I just started riding again last year. Running was getting a bit boring. So I added bike rides to the training plan.I never ride either of my bikes.. Went through a stage where I did.. Now it just seems like a hassle
Same. I bought a Schwinn when I enrolled at KSU. Rode it constantly in college. It is still in very good shape and is a nice smooth ride, but I have rode it like 5 or 6 times since school.

You rode a bicycle in college. You sorry bastard. That is hands down the loseriest thing you can do. You seem to have rebounded decently in old age, but man.
you would think the San Francisco of central Illinois would be a great place for cycling.

Can it go off road? Apparently all the "Cyclists" on gE are pud bike lane riders.
I personally think road cyclists are fairly odd people, but not awful like hipsters on fixies. I know a road commuter that wears a full tights suit and clip shoes for a 3 mile ride each way. I think I went through my cyclist classifications in this thread already.Hardcore commuter.
I'm a loner roadie. I find that the bike clubs in Louisville are full of asshats. So I just do my own thing.

Never even entered my mind. :dunno:
anyone ever bounced their head off the pavement? I did it as a kid (with helmet) and that's about the most helpless feeling split second I've ever had in my life. team helmet man.
i've fallen off a bike once. chipped my tooth really bad. maybe i should wear a rough ridin' mouth guard too?
:ohno:

The one time it saves your life is worth the 10,000 times you look like a dork. And honestly, you don't look THAT bad in it. In fact, I was thinking about how that needs to change. Why are people who don't wear helmets not the dorks? Gonna start calling all non-helmet wearing cyclists "dorks" as I pass them by.
There have been some pretty big advancements in helmet technology too. These things are becoming really popular around here...

Guys, my left knee hurts real bad when I hit around the 10 mile mark. What's the deal?Have you had a bike fitting? Good chance you have a jacked up stroke putting torque on your knee.
I have. I put 500 miles on it and then it started to hurt right at the end of that cycling season. Are you one of those morons that thinks bicycles are supposed to be rode on a sidewalk?
Winter riding. Do any of you ride year round? I usually just run in the winter but a lingering back issue is forcing me to find other cardio at this time. Throwing on the layers for an easy 25 miles this afternoon. Still warm enough that I don't need gloves or ear covers.I try to commute year round. I'll switch from my cyclocross bike to my mountain in snow though. I always have gloves on though since I hate it when my hands get cold.

The Centers for Disease Control and the International Mountain Bicycling Association issued a rare public warning today after health authorities across the country reported an epidemic of mountain bikers and even road cyclists deliberately crashing in hopes of achieving the “seven-week stiffie.” The wave of intentional groundings follows a report in the Irish Medical Journal of a 22-year-old mountain biker who clipped his private parts on the bars and suffered an erection that wouldn’t go away.
Hundreds of cyclists across North America have sought medical attention at emergency rooms and trauma centers since word of the Irishman’s plight spread through the media last week, with injuries ranging from head trauma to broken collarbones to severely bruised genitals.
“Deliberately crashing in hopes of achieving extended sexual performance is a terrible idea,” said Dr. Robert Ahmed of the CDC at a press conference. “This incident in Ireland is the first known case of bike-trauma-related priapism, and the odds of recreating it are astronomically against.”
A brief survey of mountain bikers at a trailhead in Fruita, Colorado, showed that the CDC and IMBA have their challenges ahead of them. While AJ was interviewing one cyclist, at least three more were seen grabbing fistfuls of front brake and launching themselves in a field of tall grass.
“It’s feast or famine,” said Blake Montgomery, a car detailer from Grand Junction who sat astride a Santa Cruz Heckler. “Bike saddles kill the blood flow and make us lose our performance. The crashes give it back. I’ll take the feast, man, and if I have to get a few bruises in the process that’s okay.”
As the CDC-IMBA press conference was ending, an open microphone picked up Dr. Ahmed leaning over to an IMBA representative and whispering, “Don’t these idiots realize there’s a five dollar boner pill?”
Have a friend who is 6'6" and wants to get into a decent mountain bike. the only one he has found that would (probably) fit him is the Surly Karate Monkey Ops, but he would actually like to try it out before hand. Clam's, you have any suggestos on figuring out bike fit stuff as a tall person?go to a local bike shop and demo the crap out of them

not local to MHK. the problem with demos is they typically don't have an XXL in stock. he'd also like to switch to a clipless set up, but he's also been having trouble finding a size 17 mtb shoe.

I would def tell him to go 29 though and not eff with a 26
You might have him consider an XL depending on how his height is distributed, might be something they can adjust seat posts and stems to make a bike fit too.Have a friend who is 6'6" and wants to get into a decent mountain bike. the only one he has found that would (probably) fit him is the Surly Karate Monkey Ops, but he would actually like to try it out before hand. single speed 29'r? oxymoron much?wut???
Anyone have a single speed 29er?? I want one. Thoughts??? Experience?? Regrets??? Thinking going with the Nashbar 29er SS which has good reviews also pondering getting a Chinese carbon frame and building one up, but I have lil (no) experience in such things.

i mean. single speeds bikes, aren't they really for city riding? the big advantage is less weight?
i know that some riders do, i'm sure it's just superb if all that you're doing is single track prairie riding pussy crap.
the weight advantage to a single speed is negated as soon as you make the decision to buy a 29 inch bike, at that point the only reason you're doing it is because you think it looks good with your vest and wingtips w/o socks.
I DNR this thread, but are you guys all going to be out getting in people's way on Bike to Work Day, May 16?

know a lot of riders around here (READ: Not prairie riding pussy crap) who go with single speed. i've had friends ride Moab on single speed. there is also this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Speed_World_Championship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Speed_World_Championship)
the fact that you are riding a 29er doesn't change the fact that it provides a weight benefit. don't really get what you are going after here, but you are wrong.

I got a new bike, a Giant Escape, and I love it. It's such a huge upgrade from my old Trek. Riding is much more fun now.
Question for "real" cyclists: why do you get seats with no padding but then wear shorts with padding in the butt?

but the weight is in the shorts. You still have to move that weight.

i know the padded shorts are heavier than no padded but that difference is significantly less than padded versus non padded seats.

crap town usa a.k.a. kansas city, has about 1/10ths of a mile of bike lanes. do i ride the crap out of it? you better bet your ass. ten laps and i'm a mile in.
Oh, BTW, I got a new bike, a Giant Escape. So much fun to ride!
does anyone else ride where there's lots of other commuting cyclists? I want to punch every casual cyclist in the face. Like, there's lots of bike lanes with lots of bikes, which is great. Except when you're at a red light and some dickwad just ignores the three bikes lined up and goes to the front of the line. Then GOES SLOWER than the other bikes. Last night, I passed someone who did this once traffic started moving, and they cut in line at the next light! eff YOU!
Also lots of them try to run stop signs in front of other cyclists, which sucks. I am honestly more worried about getting in an accident with another bike than a car.

carbon seat (115-200g) and padded shorts (200g) = 315-400g
padded seat (400-600g) and non-padded shorts (150g) = 550-750g
so anywhere from a 40-60% weight reduction for the saddle and shorts
also, congrats on the new bike, that's pretty exciting
50F is my limit and I have shoe covers. I hate riding in the cold.

not a fan of cold rides either, like at all. have to get back in shape though. been doing great the past couple of months and i can't let the cold stop me. those kind of excuses are what got me out of shape to start with.
are you really going to wear those shoe things?

AST- I love the Orbea. I don't have any other experience on a carbon road frame though, so I'm not real qualified to judge.
I did have a warranty claim on the Orbea though. (Small crack on the top backside of the head tube. Bike shop guy said it was epoxy cracking, versus the actual carbon.) Competitive Cyclist, where I bought the bike and Orbea both took great care of me. They didn't have any of the white frames available in my size, so I am now riding this:

Been limited to mostly trainer rides for the last month. Started using The Sufferfest videos. I love them. They definitely beat your ass.
Craigslist again. Spend the $200 and you'll have a much nicer bike than a new one at Walmart. Might try a local bike shop. We have one in Louisville that specializes in rehabs. You can get some great deals on classic mountain bikes that are in like new condition. The New Magna!

Welp guyz, the magna is no more. Purchased for $75 off craigslist this guy finally crapped out in the fall. Brakes became non existent and it sat over at my buddys house for a month until I trashed it.
NOW HELP BEN JI FIND A NEW BIKE!
Requirements
- Suitable for frequent 1-2 mile rides to bro's houses where I can crush beers and not have to worry about driving.
- MUST be a mountain bike able to "Hop Curbs"
-Maybe take it "Off Roading" once a year.
My current plan is to buy a new bike at target/walmart. Is there a better option? I'm really only looking to spend $100-$200.
Bought a Giant hybrid off ebay for $25, seller was in a yellow gas station in Lawrence. They were subsequently raided for being a fence :sdeek:. It's held up like a champ for 7 years now, but am now switching to my old Diamondback hybrid with 700cm wheels.
Am looking for a good light to mount on bike so I can ride home from work at 5pm--it will be dark on the trails until time changes in the spring. Any recommendations?

I use this, it's rechargeable so you don't have to buy batteries and is pretty much amazing:

Ten miles this afternoon. Beautiful riding weather now that my allergies are under control. Looking forward to a couple of longer rides this weekend.
i need to stop looking at strava (and AS posts), i'm so slow.
but, another beautiful day in Flagstaff. About 20 miles of fun singletrack. Saw one other rider on the trail.
put 52 miles behind me today. fun new route with plenty of hills and no runners.Nice! Rain here on Saturday. I'll be hitting a loop this afternoon.
that is all.
Got about 15 in with a ride on some private land in mhk that ended up overlooking Anneberg park. Scariest freaking descent I've been on coming down this gravel farm road with a cattle grid at the end.
knocked out 60mi this morning. 45 at a ridiculous pace that I had no idea I could ride at for that distance. the last 15 were at a leisurely 16 pace for cooldown.Nice work. I'm sure you've posted it, but what kind of rig are you riding?
i am getting ready to drink all the beer now.
Hey guys - I haven't been riding nearly as much as I would like...endless mowing, ball practices, etc., but next week I will be in Maui and while I am there I am going to rent a bike and attempt this bad boy:yeah I think I bussed up that.....good luck/taken voice

Can I get a decent commuter bike that I can also mess around with on some training for distance crap for around $500? My ride to school is short, so I dont need much comfort, but I'd also like to do a little training for the MS 150. It's sort of a goal of mine someday.Giant escape

You could probably find something on CL that would suffice, but you'd have to know what to look for.
One caveat is I don't want to buy it until after I move in early August. Otherwise, that sounds pretty swell. Although, I'm willing to pay extra to purchase it from an accountable entity (business). Althouuuuuuuugh, I'm sure the bicycle resale market is HOTHOTHOT in Austin around that time, too. Man, decisions...

Finishing up a refresh on my bike. New cables all around, new crank, chain, and cassette. Need to do more cleaning to get it up to standard. I have a few nicks that I'm thinking of touching up with some nail polish or something.
I just started "cycling." I got a new bike for Father's Day and have been riding the hell out of it. My previous bike was a Specialized Rock Hopper that I bought a LONG time ago the summer before my freshman year of college.
My new one is a Cannondale hybrid. I've been riding the Indian Creek trail in Joco, because I live near it. I did 24 miles today. It rides like a dream compared to my old Rockhopper.
I had been doing a lot of running, And my back was bothering me a bit. The biking has been better for that. I will probably still run a couple times a week, just to mix it up.
I like the new bike, but I already need to take it in to get the gears adjusted. It also has this weird adjustable handle bar neck thing that needs to be tightened up, because it slowly slips out of position on long rides.

You should probably tighten that up.
Cycling is like marijuana cigarettes, it's very addictive.
I have put over 80 miles on my new bike this week. It's pretty convenient living near Indian Creek trail.
I think I am going to do the MS ride in September.

I did 10 mile and 20 mile rides yesterday, and an exhausting 16 mile ride today at break neck pace with a friend of mine who is a 4 time Ironman participant. Jesus, he whipped my rough ridin' ass....I have a lot of room to improve.

I have put over 80 miles on my new bike this week. It's pretty convenient living near Indian Creek trail.
I think I am going to do the MS ride in September.

I've started riding too. had some knee problems running. I'm on the farthest south edge of Indian creek and when I ride north on the trail it ends in a neighborhood around 119th street. Where does it go from there?

The bike trail in KC? Google maps has it ending by 109th and Blue River Rd by I435.

Do you mean you live on the East end in Leawood (mile marker 0), or you live on the West end in Olathe (mile marker 17)?
On the East end, in Leawood, at about mile marketer 0.5 it connects to the Tomahawk trail that runs south along Mission down south of 119th. Tomahawk is 7 miles round trip, IIRC.
On the western side, at about mile marker 13.5, it connects to Eastbrook or something like that, and that is only about 3 miles long. The far West end of Indian Creek goes past that Nazarene college and ends at a school.
I am roughly 2 blocks away from mile marker 4.5, in Overland Park.
I can ride East to the end of Indian Creek and take Tomahawk and back home and get around 15 or 16 miles, depending on a few things.
I can ride West and stay on Indian Creek and get a 24 mile ride, there and back.

Oh man that is sad. Hopefully he was knocked out and didn't feel it. Its good that the race got it right with their reaction to shut things down and had a memorial ride (those are always so sad :( been to 1) I know someone that is headed to that area next week too. I can't imagine doing those kinds of enduros, but I always watch that kind of stuff on pink bike and I'm always amazed at their skills and huge balls. Is Oregon weird like Washington where once you cross the Cascades its like another world (east/west divide that is)?
Yeah, pretty much desert on this side, rain forest on the other. (and hipster per capita probably trends along with rainfall totals.)
Just saw Adam Craig at the airport, weird because I had just read this a few hours ago. (http://velonews.competitor.com/2015/08/news/crash-kills-competitor-in-colorado-round-of-enduro-world-series_380290) :frown:

Thanks man. I am pretty excited about it. Should be some pretty awesome riding in general...the mountain intimidates me a little bit but I think as long as I watch my HR and keep from blowing up I should be able to make it.Sweet century ride yesterday!

I know this is late, but did anyone watch Red bull Rampage? Holy crap Paul Basagoitia crash.
eff thieves. Sorry your rig got stolen. Cut chain/lock out momentarily unsecured?
I am here to report a Christmas bicycle miracle. As you might remember, I got a hybrid bike last June and I rode the eff out of it. I decided to go the mountain bike route, and am purchasing a gently used Santa Cruz Tallboy CC 29er, with all XTR components, for about 1/3 of retail. I am beyond excited. I had been holding out for a very high end bike, used. This fits the bill. Man oh man. :Woohoo:

Where do you live by chance Pete? Santa Cruz, Yeti, and Niner all seems like badass brands.
Do you guys ride on the streets? I've been wanting to get into biking but it feels like getting hit by a car is a matter of if not when.

Johnson County, not in the mountains or some crap like that. I like riding trails, though.
I ride on the street but not major thoroughfares. There are also a couple of trails in Topeka that are good for riding.Do you guys ride on the streets? I've been wanting to get into biking but it feels like getting hit by a car is a matter of if not when.

I would really like to invest in the SRAM eTap, but I'm sure I won't be doing that for a while.

Since we are posting bike porn :fatty:
if you're looking for new wheels, i recommend Industry Nine
you know you need to go the other direction right? (I forgot about it installing new pedals a week ago)
also what kind of bike? did the pedal have an allen key on the back side of the "screw", on the inside of the crank arm? I hope you don't have to get a new bottom bracket because you have hold crappy crank arms.
I already fixed it. They were sram vias. My local shop had a generic replacementthats good news. I had an FSA crank that was press fit that I didn't torque correctly and killed. Nice opportunity to upgrade, but quite the opportunity cost.

My bike was stolen :curse:Next few months are going to be a good time to buy if you can wait a bit; 2016 models are about to come out.
Tips on where I should get a new one from (Kansas City). It doesn't have to be top line, just a moderte biker here. I tend to stick to roads but occasionally go on small, easy trails. My bike needed replacing anyways, just a POS mountain bike from Target I bought like 8 years ago in college

the guys who bike on the path around the lake near me are assfaces. like I'm walking along there with my wife and two year old and rough ridin' lance armstrong comes up behind us at 40 mph screaming "SINGLE FILE, ON THE LEFT!" like I GAF. I'm going to end up tossing a few bikes in the lake this summer.

Next time yell back "you dropped something!" Like real loud so he hears it. When he stops and asks what it was or what you saw just be like "something just fell off your bike around the back wheel."
Tried out the Swope mountain bike trails today, did the easy and the intermediate stuff up the hill with some harder core guys. I loved it. It's windy and fast like Lawrence but with lots of elevation changes.

got 58 miles in yesterday. most exciting part of the ride was around mile 35 when a hornet or wasp got stuck in my helmet and started angrily stinging the crap out of my head. was derailed about 20 minutes while I let the heartbeat in my head subside and went to multiple gas stations to find some benadryl.
could have been a lot worse as I was cruisin down a hill at about 30mph when it happened.

I got a attacked by a swarm of hornets in Minnesota a couple years ago. It was awful. My legs swelled up, and it was pretty painful. I can't imagine that happening on my head. On a bike. Holy cow.

That looks awesome. How do you like the fat boy? Do you prefer it to full Suspension bikes trails like that?
That is rough ridin' amazeballs and I want it.
Thats a Blackborow right? Did it come with the lugs to mount stuff/bottles on the fork? How many amazing day trips and or camping trips have you been on where you packed most of the gear on the frame? And any want to spend the money to get a squishy fork or were you wanting rigid? Any reason for the Blackborow versus the Mukluk or Beargrease?

To better answer your question: I've ridden this trail on a full suspension and generally love it for day trips to the high country. Full suspensions out there are way more fun and given the choice to ride the fatbike vs a fully, I would choose the fully in any instance where I'm not self-supporting over two or more days.

I have been looking into doing this crazy multiple day ride thing with a buddy of mine...it some deal where they stock little cabins or yurts for you along the way, and you just follow the map and don't have to pack crap.

I live in Durango, CO which has pretty phenomenal access to trails. I've had a couple of friends do the san juan hut systems from either durango to moab or telluride to moab. Supposed to be fun and having huts with a bed and booze sounds luxurious as hell. I came across a couple doods doing this on my ride and they looked like they were pretty stoked on it. Even with most of your food being taken care of there are a lot of bags that would help on your trip like:

Lot of bag makers out there, but these guys are my personal fav. You should def do the trip; I doubt you'll regret it.
I've looked at that hut trip and not doing it was one of my regrets from my time in CO. Let me know when the gE trip gets scheduled.

I would try to plan it late summer, after the kids are back to school, and before any possibility of snow. Like first two weeks of September. June might also be option to avoid precip. If you're a risk taker maybe latter half of September when the quakies are turning. I think July August you could get thunderstruck off the mountain almost any afternoon.

I have recently started riding my bike on linear trail. I've gone off on that hiking trail/ wooded section a couple of times. I enjoy it. I want to ride more. My schwinn mesa is kinda a run down POS, though. I've had it since '07 and my dumbass rarely did any maintenance on it. I guess I'll scour craigslist for some used bikes.
what I'm really trying to ask is, does anyone know if there any other trails around MHK besides linear? i know eff all about these things other than how to pedal and stay upright.

Ben ji,
how did this go for you? Ms. WW and I want to get into biking, just around town and paved trails. We literally have no idea what we're doing. At this point we're looking at used ones on craigslist or cheapos from Academy.
Thoughts anyone?

If I could put in my :th_twocents:
Department store bikes are really designed to last <100 hours of use (Walmart closer to 36hrs) before you start to get some issues. It might be a good option if you are really unsure if you will stick with riding. That way you know whether or not spending more than $150.00 for a better bike is for you. If you are for sure going to ride weekly you might think about getting a better bike from the outset than what a store like academy can offer.
Something like the Giant Roam (https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/bikes-roam-2016) , Specialized's Fitness (https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/fitness) line might be good places to start for a simple paved trail bike. These will be more upright and comfortable for novice riders, have multiple gears to make it easy or go a little faster, and very simple to maintain.

5'11" and the bike fits me very well. It's a size large, but has a really short stem on it so it feels more maneuverable.

You might stop by Clint's store (Brew Bros Hops and Sprockets) and see if he knows of anyone selling a used bike. Trek has some spring sales right now if you want to go new. I think Pathfinder has mostly switched to Trek. They occasionally have used and last season's bikes down stairs. A decent hardtaill will do fine on the river trails. You could probably do the trails at Fancy Creek depending on how aggressively you ride.I went to pathfinder and they said the could hook me up with a hard rock for $425 I'm going to be working this summer and this will probably be my only purchase. I don't know much about bike friends but guys in the dorm who bike say it's all about the feel I get from the bike. So they say it's important to try alot of em and go with my gut. Also do any of you have different seats than stock they seem kinda small?
Used bike sites like Craig's list or Pink bike aren't real great in the area until you get to KC area. Jerry's in Topeka is okay, doesn't have a great selection, but they work to help you out. Capps is the worst of roadie culture. Judging by the people who go there, they pretty much suck. Been there and handful of times and found it unremarkable.
New bike day! New AD day! go cats.

eff yeah Asava! That looks amazing.
Did you sell you Santa Cruz? Just curious to see how the secondary market is.

Would be awesome if Taylor Phinney could take the opening TT, but I don't see Tony Martin losing it.

ridiculous ruling :facepalm:I wouldn't have a problem with it if they had done this in years past.
Looked like a great check into the boards to me.:sdeek:
Six miles from Chelsea to Central Park and back. Took a break and ran for an hour. :)
Had a great ride last weekend before vacation started. Real nice 25+ along the Ohio River. Crossed in downtown Louisville and the East End Bridge.
This TdF has been a snoozefest. Tired of watching Sky with a stranglehold on the race and tired of watching Kittel win every sprint stage.
I hope someone animates this race tomorrow.
A chink in Froomey's armor, perhaps? :surprised:
Damn. That's some climbing.
Do any of you ride with a GoPro? If so, which one? What mount?
That's a great drive. Not sure about that climb though on a bike! Nice work.
F yes Alexander! That is a beast climb. I've often wondered about the nuts who make that climb as I drive past them in the summer time.
Alexander,
I'm kinda surprised the guy at the park entrance hadn't seen more people make it. Seems like there are a number of crazy freak cyclists there. When I was last there a few years ago there was a small group just starting up and 2 or 3 coming down. I wonder what the strava kom is on the way down, especially their top speed.
Great accomplishment. I'm glad to hear visitors support it. I bike in an extremely busy park in the mid Atlantic and people are not as kind in the park.
Oh boy. I've got some tour pics for you fellas.Post em up, love to see shots.

Very cool pics!
What a stage that was, too. Porte was gone shortly after these pics, correct? And Rigo winning with only his 53 X 11!
Fall cycling is coming quickly. I could have used some arm warmers this morning.
Finally kept my riding up through the summer to be able to ride the Hotter'N Hell 100 next weekend. Usually 10,000-14,000 ride this so that will be a little bit of an experience in its own.
i get kind of worn out taking a 100 mile drive in my car.
It's a five-hour day for me with a stop for a quick lunch. I like it too.

And my ride was my first trip to Tsali in western NC. Fantastic weather, absolutely crushed me. About 2100 ft of climb over 18 miles. Not ready for that, but working on fitness.
Anybody here ride titanium? Wanting to pick up another bike and have been leaning that direction. Have in mind a dual purpose bike. Looking at a gravel build with disc breaks. Then want to pick up a 2nd set of super stiff alloy wheels for doing road climb/mountain summits. This way I can get into gravel grinders and hopefully keep myself more into riding during the winter.
Looking at Moots or Mosaic currently but am willing to listen to other advice if someone has experience.

Friend in MHK went with a custom Ti bike. Sounded pretty involved with fitment and such. The frame is absolutely gorgeous, everything down to the welds for the bottle cage holder are art. I can ask what company he used, I thought it was out of Colorado in some level of production.

Very sweet. Did you end up making a decision on Ti Bikes? Moonmen would be another one id check out if I was going the custom route. Would also be cool to look into a custom steel ride like Retrotec or Sklar.
i have been cruising to work lately on a schwinn that was $80 on craigslist. it has 21 speeds!
I bought a Trek dad bike and got mrs dave a trek mom bike and lil sd a Woom and lil girl sd a burly trailer I tow the crap out of and a quat bike hitch carrier deal for the bikes.
Yes, rusty was consulted prior to this purchase irlYou are different from the middle aged parent I described way back when. You're a casual family weekender with a trailer or a ride behind on your way to your local town festival downtown. (Suburban downtown, not real downtown)

I am a mixture of a several of those categories as well. I haven't ridden much this year, I need to get back into it. I am going lug my mountain bike up to Northern Minnesota next week and hit some trails and ride some old dirt backroads that go by loads of little lakes and ponds and crap.I re-read this thread, do you still have that unbelievably sexy santa cruz?

let's fire this thread back up, it's cycling season!
- i'm approaching 1000 miles since i got my first real bike last summer. this year i might try for 2k, who knows??
- i put some specialized armadillo elites on my road bike late last year and have not gotten a single flat in probably ~500 miles. strong recommend!
- really getting swept up in the gravel bike deal. i want to do some overnights. i'm weighing the raleigh tamland, jamis renegade, and maybe a fuji jari. there is also a used trek crossrip that is tempting. anybody have any protips (aluminum vs steel, cheap but good bags, does mech vs hydro brakes really matter)?
3,712 ft??

Also, this thread makes me so sad. I used to be such a badboy on a bike. I probably couldn’t even ride around the block currently without dying.

crap, I wish, my running days are over, I loved cross country, it was my favorite high school sport. @IPA4Me would be happy to know that I am riding my bike with her when she runs in the neighborhood.

Hope to go over to Council Grove to the rail trail again before it gets too hot here. From Council Grove to Allen is a nice 42 mile round trip through the Flint Hills.
@mocat, Unless you have bushhog mounted to the front of your bike, I'm pretty sure you can't ride between Herington and Council Grove yet - the trail is overgrown and full of trash. I don't think you can ride west of Council Grove. Hopefully this changes soon because it would bring a trailhead much closer to me. Would be awesome to have gE ride sometime.Hope to go over to Council Grove to the rail trail again before it gets too hot here. yes! i think me and a couple buddies are going to do the whole thing over two days (Herington -> Osawatamie)

The trail between in Council Grove and Allen is really nice. Goes through some old railroad cuts and past the site of the 2012 Symphony in the Flint Hills. Also, there is not much shade on the trail after about 10am during the summer. I was there with a buddy two years ago and didn't have enough water or snacks. Started to get cramps about 8 miles from the end of the ride. Would get off the bike to walk and felt like I was going to black out. I was pretty messed up by the time I got back to the trailhead. Sounds like you are experienced / conditioned enough to not have stuff like that happen. Since that ride, I've discovered that you can get water at the library or the meat locker in Allen. Good salty snacks to be had at the locker plant in Allen

Thanks to your post itt, we changed plans and decided to go from Council Grove to Osawatomie as one century. The trail between Ottawa and Osawatomie is great, the topography really changes and it feels like you're in a forest the whole time. And the Allen meat locker is clutch.

I've ridden them. They're great for pushing distances without killing yourself. I'm old school ego though. Need to do it myself still. Might change my mind in ten years.
However I'd pull the trigger on an ebike commuter if I lived in the city. Bit too far for me to do it from our current address.

I think e-bike prices will eventually come down. Right now seems like too many problems to make it worthwhile. My brother works at a bike shop and it sounds like they just suck across the board, with few exceptions. Part of it is also the target demo for these are people that aren't likely to take care of them very well.
If I lived somewhere any hillier than kc I would think about it. I avg 50ft per mile no matter where I go in the metro. When I see my friends in Wichita on strava with their consistent 10ft per mile, I am jealous.
IPA, I've gotta think rural KY is hilly af, no?
Probably covered earlier ITT, but I was cruising the website for the Dirty Kanza (or whatever they are calling it now last night). I did not know that the offered a 350+ mile "XL" route. That is freakish. Do the riders stop to sleep in a ditch or something? The 200mi route looks simultaneously beautiful/fascinating and grinding/terrible.

you should look into the bleeding kansas gravelduro for the following reasons:
- it's in mhk
- it's about 75 miles *but* the race is set up where only six timed segments count towards your place in the race. so you can take your time and enjoy the scenery in between those segments
- it's in late september so the likelihood of nice weather is pretty high for KS
wow! incred jealous. nice SC also! how many nights?

Yeah, upon further research I am leaning toward a cheaper electric Specialized mountain bike, or trek. Something with a good reliable motor and a decent brand overall.
Was in Colorado last week and saw a cyclist at the summit of Cottonwood Pass (12,000 ft elevation) wearing just shorts and sandals while snow flurries blew around him. Looked like he was doing some sort of ultralight bikepacking.

Any electric bike owners? I am contemplating getting one that could work on either easy mountain bike trails or street riding. Thinking of maybe a fat tire Rad power or Aventure, simply because those are lower cost and pretty good reviews.I was talking to my neighbor last night. He has a Quietkat e-bike that he rides to work. It has huge tires - like what they put on downhill mountain bikes. The main reason he has this ebike is to check his trail cams because he is a fanatical bowhunter and the bike leaves very little scent to put off deer. Looks like a very cool/fun setup.
Anyone done the research?

That's really sad, but also pretty reckless on the cyclist's part.

What was reckless by the cyclist?
It's a dirt road. Vehicles stir up dust that you can see from a mile away. Maybe look left and right when you are coming up on an intersection without any stop signs, because a truck going 60 mph on gravel isn't going to be able to stop.

Well, he got t-boned by a pickup truck, so apparently he didn't.
gravel bikes are the best. also the roads are generally garbage where i live with debris and broken glass, etc, so my gravel bike with tubeless tires is kind of my DD. what bikes are on your list?
i've never done the belgian waffle but i've heard it's a great event. that elev gain is real
I don%u2019t have an extremely narrow list yet. Just doing more research currently while I start on the trainer. I will most likely go the route of seeing what is gently us d and available to get the most bang for my buck. I have been keeping an eye on The Pro%u2019s Closet. I have heard good things about them and there are some nice bikes on there. I will also keep a lookout for bikes on consignment sale at a couple local shops.
Looking for a double ring set up, I am a spinner that tries to keep it above 90 cadence almost always. I know that really narrows down my selection. Tubeless or tubeless ready. Non-carbon frame, carbon forks are fine. Have not been swayed one way or the other on 650 vs 700. GRX600 equivalent or above.
This bike popped up and man, it is hard for me not to pull the trigger right now. I promised my wife that I would not buy until I logged hours on the trainer and need to hold up my end of the deal. It is so dang sexy.

my bikepacking setup is just about dialedThat’s awesome. I never had the extra time to commit to getting into cycling due to other hobbies. But i have a family member that will do San Diego to somewhere in Zona. And a co-worker who is doing the continental ride in june or july, which i’m incredibly jealous, I’ve only done 2/3 of that ride on a dirt bike.

It sounds like you are a dyed in the wool roadie at heart. I got my gravel bike right before 1x became standard and that's kind of my only regret. Maybe test drive a 1x setup before you commit to a 2x. Otoh if where you live is mostly flat and you want max speed, 2x would be fine.
If you're anti-carbon frame I would 100% recommend steel frame (carbon fork is totally fine but try to find one with fork mounts).
Coming from road bikes, you would probably be most comfortable on a bike with endurance road type geometry. About half of gravel bikes on the market are basically evolved mtb's with drop bars and you would maybe find that jarring.
And would go with a wheel/tire setup in the 700x40 range.
edit: hydro brakes and thru-axles are a must (industry standard now in the price range you're looking at; but if you get a used bike just double check the specs)

I learned today that there is a 1000 mile gravel route thru the Flint Hills:

Something for you mountain bikers to consider. Hut to hut trip through some amazing scenery.Looks incredible. Have you done this trail? Are the trails very technical (like you have to ride over sharp boulders)?

nice m8. i'm glad you did not die out thereThe first time I did the trail about 5-6 years ago we went all the way to Allen and I didn’t get enough water and snacks. I was getting cramps about 5 miles from the end. It was scary. The hills are not bad but the sun gets really hot later in the morning.
Deep in the heart of Texas?Just north of the SA airport.
Nice work, mocat! How does that compare to previous years?Garmin Connect is free. You lose the competitive nature of KOM but tracks everything just fine for me.
And do you find the Strava subscription worthwhile? Seems like they keep sliding more and more stuff behind the paywall, and it’s ticking me off. Probably should just start paying.

I'm looking at getting a bike and am seeking advice on what to look for. I used to bike a lot but only used a beach cruiser to get around. I was travelling 2-4 miles a couple times on a good week. Now I'm near a 17 mile, flat, paved trail and I think I'll want to go more than 2 miles at a time. As a newb, what's a good cheap bike to seek out on Facebook marketplace or a used bike shop? I'm looking at spending $200-$300.Specialized Sirrus or Kona Dew or whatever Trek’s equivalent model is called would be great for something like this.
yeah the kona dew rules and i want to build one up as a dedicated commuter.
this may sound stupid but my recommendation for your first bike is to spend $400-500 instead of $200-300. i browse FB marketplace (and the kc cycling swap & shop group) quite a bit, and that price range is the sweet spot where you are getting a real bike that you might actually want to ride, instead of a walmart bike or a 1970s beach cruiser that weighs 50 lbs. of course there are exceptions!

Roadie going in the shop tomorrow for the spring tuneup and an overhaul. Time for new spinning parts before a summer of hills across Kentucky.

I got a Specialized Sirrus 1.0 today. It was advertised as a 2.0 so I was disappointed to learn it was only a 1.0. Decided to get it anyway because it felt good and it looked damn near new. Thank you for the help Sandstone and mocat.enjoy! should be a good ride for you
I know this thread is primarily about your personal cycling activities but I stumbled across this YouTube channel a few days ago and this is really fascinating. This couple is attempting to cycle from the northern border of Alaska to the tip of South America. In the first year, they made it to Mexico. Some incredible scenery as well as some conditions that look really miserable and scary.i honestly can’t imagine attempting this without getting killed in some way, shape, or form. probably by getting hit by a car.

From the portions I watched, I agree that getting run down by a car would be the #1 threat to life. Probably hypothermia, dehydration and falling off your bike and bleeding to death in the forest 100 miles from help would be close behind.I know this thread is primarily about your personal cycling activities but I stumbled across this YouTube channel a few days ago and this is really fascinating.
