Alex Howes updates from the Tour Divide are a delight, in the "yes pls i'll have more of this" thread sort of way.

Took advantage of some cooler temps this morning to do a 34.89mi on a combination of gravel and county blacktop. Had cool breezes and cloud cover the entire time. Felt good.

Looks incredible. Have you done this trail? Are the trails very technical (like you have to ride over sharp boulders)?

I’m no biker.  Just based on the area, I’d guess at least a little of it would probably be technical trail.

Did a short ride on the Flint Hills Nature Trail this morning. Didn’t go all the way to Allen because of the heat. I’m pleased to report that they have installed a water source/ bottle filler in Bushong which is great.

The first time I did the trail about 5-6 years ago we went all the way to Allen and I didn’t get enough water and snacks. I was getting cramps about 5 miles from the end.  It was scary. The hills are not bad but the sun gets really hot later in the morning.

It's surprising bc osawatomie is an absolute shithole but the stretch from there to Ottawa is the best. It's like as close to forest as you get in Kansas

Just north of the SA airport.

Nice work, mocat!  How does that compare to previous years?

And do you find the Strava subscription worthwhile?  Seems like they keep sliding more and more stuff behind the paywall, and it’s ticking me off.  Probably should just start paying.

Garmin Connect is free. You lose the competitive nature of KOM but tracks everything just fine for me.

i started cycling in 2018 and have increased mileage every year. the last two years i have commuted to work whenever it's nice enough. this year like almost 600 miles was in May, most of which was riding the katy trail.

i don't mind paying for strava bc it is an amazing app, and poring over my route, looking at heatmaps, planning routes based on global heatmaps, etc is all worthwhile. idk if this a premium feature but the flyover animation is amazing (for rides in cooler locations of course), it's all worth it for me.

garmin connect is fine but it's annoying they don't use moving time to calculate avg speed. maybe there's a way to change that, idk.

I'm looking at getting a bike and am seeking advice on what to look for. I used to bike a lot but only used a beach cruiser to get around. I was travelling 2-4 miles a couple times on a good week. Now I'm near a 17 mile, flat, paved trail and I think I'll want to go more than 2 miles at a time. As a newb, what's a good cheap bike to seek out on Facebook marketplace or a used bike shop? I'm looking at spending $200-$300.

Specialized Sirrus or Kona Dew or whatever Trek’s equivalent model is called would be great for something like this.

yeah the kona dew rules and i want to build one up as a dedicated commuter.

this may sound stupid but my recommendation for your first bike is to spend $400-500 instead of $200-300. i browse FB marketplace (and the kc cycling swap & shop group) quite a bit, and that price range is the sweet spot where you are getting a real bike that you might actually want to ride, instead of a walmart bike or a 1970s beach cruiser that weighs 50 lbs. of course there are exceptions!

I'm open to $400-$500. Hoping to get more of a deal over the winter.

New models released in the fall. So discounts should be there on old models that remain in inventory.

Agree that $500 is a better spot. Break above the Walmart bike crap to the bike shop entry level.
