Sure. It would suck to have a ride waiting for you in Herington.

The trail between in Council Grove and Allen is really nice. Goes through some old railroad cuts and past the site of the 2012 Symphony in the Flint Hills. Also, there is not much shade on the trail after about 10am during the summer. I was there with a buddy two years ago and didn't have enough water or snacks. Started to get cramps about 8 miles from the end of the ride. Would get off the bike to walk and felt like I was going to black out. I was pretty messed up by the time I got back to the trailhead. Sounds like you are experienced / conditioned enough to not have stuff like that happen.  Since that ride, I've discovered that you can get water at the library or the meat locker in Allen. Good salty snacks to be had at the locker plant in Allen

Thanks to your post itt, we changed plans and decided to go from Council Grove to Osawatomie as one century. The trail between Ottawa and Osawatomie is great, the topography really changes and it feels like you're in a forest the whole time. And the Allen meat locker is clutch.

That looks like an awesome ride. Glad to hear that you were able to do it.

One weird thing about rail trails is that there are no hard uphill sections or fast downhills because they were graded for trains which really struggle against more than a 1% grade.

Is that gravel or did they pave out there? Ohio rail to trail are all paved.

It's all finely ground packed gravel, similar to the Katy.

has anyone else used the Blue River Trail? There is a TH in Marysville and you can ride all the way to Lincoln, NE (with a small detour on streets thru Beatrice, NE). I've taken the trail to the state line and back. The scenery is not as interesting as the Konza rail trail but worth doing if you are close. There is a bar in Barneston, NE that would be a good turn-around point if you are starting in Marysville.

Did a 25 mile loop on some gravel and dirt roads outside of town yesterday. 12.5mph pace. Felt good. Unmaintained "dirt" roads are fun to ride on if they are dry and packed down by car / tractor traffic.

Multi-use paved trail through a park. It's fantastic.

It is amazing. Fortunate to live in an area with a ton of cyclists as many riders roll out this way from the city. Neighbors are used to us.

Congrats, mocat.  Beautiful fall day. That had to be some top notch Flint Hills scenery.

That particular route is THE route for both mavericks and professionals. For traditionalists and visionaries, creative minds and explorers.
