That looks like a ton of fun. I'd need to get a new bike to attempt something like that. Not sure my roadie would handle the weight.

Put the roadie in the shop last week for a tune-up. Obviously needed new shift cables as the front was inoperable on the last ride but holy crap was it in bad shape. I've been riding it for nine years and hadn't replaced anything except tires and tubes. Incredible difference in performance today. Nice one hour spin through the park with smooooooth gear changes. Won't let it get that bad again.

20 mile loop on gravel / dirt roads outside of town with my buddy this morning. Headwinds, hills and cold were punishing but I'm glad I did it.

Nice, man. My roadie is on the hangers for the winter. Might get me a trainer. I need to spin a bit.

Alright guys, I'm lazy and don't want to search through the entire thread, but I finally got my first MTB, and need any/all tips, sites, etc for necessities/upgrades/yadda yadda yadda...

Anyone here ride trails/cc type stuff?

Nothing crazy yet, 2022 Trek Marlin 7.

Ditch the water bottle rack. Get a CamelBak.

Have fun! I need to buy a trail bike for next summer.

Bottles, imo. I don't like to have anything on my back when riding. Repair kit in a seat bag.

Good choice, great value for that bike. I still have my Trek made (Gary Fisher branded) aluminum hardtail from 20 years ago. Was my only bike for 15 years, and rode the heck out of it.

If you are riding flat pedals get some bike specific shoes like 510s. They make a big difference in foot bend to prevent soreness and the traction will help save your shins from pedal strikes.

If it hasn't been already,, remove the dork disc.

It's unnecessary, a bs safety feature. If you ride trails it will eventually start rattling and break anyways.

Thanks for the tips so far!

Bottle/pack decision wasn't one I was worried about just yet, but I like the ease of use the pack would undoubtedly provide.

Shoes and a better helmet are the next necessities on my list. Got some inexpensive pedals at the shop, and will upgrade those once I tear them up.

Really excited to get healthy enough to ride it soon-ish. Side note, any Spinal Surgeon Cats? Lol

Wish I could ride here in winter on trails. Never gets dry enough in the woods. Constant rut fest and that destroys the trails for summer riding.

Congrats on the new ride! Guess that means it'll probably snow soon now. :)

Saw the recommendations for ditching the water bottle cage - I'd keep it and add a 2nd. I hate wearing a pack if I don't have to. But YMMV. A hip pack is pretty damn useful also - they make 'em w/ hydration bladders as well if you're dead set against bottles. My $0.02.

Nice dirt and gravel ride this afternoon. Fought some 30mph headwinds for part of the ride.

Any electric bike owners?  I am contemplating getting one that could work on either easy mountain bike trails or street riding.  Thinking of maybe a fat tire Rad power or Aventure, simply because those are lower cost and pretty good reviews.

Anyone done the research?

I've got one in my fleet to carry the kid. Heads up, they are fun as crap. Specialized has a really nice product out in that space.

I'm pretty much fully converted to Citibike. It's such a great deal and you never need to stress about loving up. Only problem is sometimes I can't park right at my office because it fills up. And the ebikes are pretty good! But expensive.

Yeah, upon further research I am leaning toward a cheaper electric Specialized mountain bike, or trek.  Something with a good reliable motor and a decent brand overall.

Both of those brands have invested a tremendous amount of money into r&d and production for e-bikes. I’ve got a Tern cargo bike that has a bosch integrated mid mount motor. It’s super fun, but lacks power at times. Yuba also has a good product.
