I'm still traumatized from a childhood visit to the giant groundhog and mutated deformed farm animal zoo tourist trap.
Obviously coffeyville is the grossest and most depressing (my best bro played there with Brendan Jacobs and they would drive to Tulsa and go to hooters 3 times a week, so Tulsa hooters > coffeyville and that was before they coated the town in oily flood waters).
So we're looking for second place nominations here. Or maybe first place for the "coffeyville trophy" and we'll just assume coffeyville itself is hanging in the rafters.
And let's think about qualifications. For instance, no coop towns that have nothing but elevators and a post office. To be really depressing and gross, there needs to be a depressing amount of sad gross people living there. Community colleges are obviously a plus, as are hotels with no discernible reason for existing (I'm looking at you, Fredonia).

Could just pretty much throw a dart at anything in western KS
sorry sd :peek:
Holcomb? They murder families there. Leoti? Home of Steve Tasker?
Great Bend isn't terrible, but there are definantly parts of it that are deteriorating. Pratt just seems like a normal, small town.
I haven't been there for awhile, but Hugoton? :dunno: There were alot of people there in the early 2000s tied to natural gas industry, who invested most of their retirement in their companies, they lost it all. Also, there was a crap ton of drugs/meth there. I once saw a map of kansas where a red dot was randomly placed within a county for every meth lab found there. In SW Kansas it was mostly clear, except for Stevens county, which was completely red.
Also, Ark City always seems like a shithole when I drive through there.

Galena is too small to be considered.
This thread would probably be more interesting if it were about the worst city in Oklahoma. Coffeyville would be one of the 10 best cities in Oklahoma.

Pffft, St. Mary's is the black squirrel capital of the world. If it was so bad, why would so many squirrels hang out there?

Not Marysville, bro.
St. Marys has the excommunicated catholic cult HQ that refuses to play games with women refs.

Someone told me that Chanute was the worst, but I don't know anything about it to make a case.

There is a fine line between the enjoyment of taking their money and realizing that I have to live amongst them.

Not only that, but the frontrunners for worst city in Kansas are all located within 15 minutes of the Oklahoma State line. The exception is Topeka, but I don't really think Topeka has a shot at winning.

There is a reason for that. It's because a lot of those towns were built on oil/natural gas money, just like a lot of the towns just across the border in Oklahoma. The cyclical nature of that industry just kills towns that aren't diverse in income streams. Hugoton was going down that path 10 years ago and I don't know if they got out of it.

I don't think the rules should include the size of the city, but if you make a suggestion, you should have something to back it up, like the environmental disasters in Galena, the redneck oil town in Coffeyville, the crime in Topeka, etc. Just saying some hayseed town because it's boring or something is not going to be enough to win the competition.

IMO, the people of SE KS are the absolute worst. Have a good friend from down there, an attorney, like a good and moral and ethical person, but oh man if I don't want to do something he wants to do it's "you fuckin pussy! you fuckin man of taste and distinction!" over and over again. It's like SE KS talk.

Well, due to its proximity to Oklahoma and Missouri, there is quite a bit of demographic spill-over. There is never a shortage of Busch Light, Mountain Dew, and methamphetamine. That said, while there is a ton of white trash, those people are still in the minority and your friend is probably just an bad person.

That's all isolated, small towns. I went to Fort Hays for 2 years and this is all I heard from people from places like Jetmore. Also, I remember amongst those people "Jewish" was the most derogatory term you could call something.

Yes. Excellent baseline. Also, since I'm the only official judge, it helps if I know the town. If I don't, your description of its gross/depressing nature better be detailed and include metaphors and similes and maybe some anthropomorphization.

Let the record show I've only been there once and it was for the wifes grandmas funeral. My only memory was how rough ridin' windy it was. That is the reason for my vote and I'm sure you will agree now.
yeah. st marys is really bad. so is ogden. as far as northeast/northcentral kansas goes, you'd probably have hiawatha as your leader. maybe we should break the state up into quadrants or something and come up with the worst towns in that quadrant and then put them in a bracket and vote this thing out.

Baxter Springs. It's right next to what's basically the worst Superfund site and ghost town in America (Picher, OK). Everyone who lives in Baxter Springs is going to turn into The Flood within 20 years.
Have a squawk friend from Hiawatha and spent the 4th of July there this year. Did not think it was that terrible. :dunno:

People have been known to drive all the way from Coffeyville to get cheaper cigarettes also. But then they complain because the new Walmarts is all the way on the outskirts of town, so it takes a whole 5 minutes to get there.

Hutchinson. It's depressing. It's big enough that if you grow up there, there are a few jobs so you feel almost obligated to stay. It's windy and dry and desolate. The exciting things to do in town involve visiting the Walmart and it meets the criteria of having a JUCO.
One of my bros is a slumlord in Ark City. He once bought a house there for $2,500.
Horton. Words cannot describe that god awful place. It wins, if you haven't been there, give thanks to whomever or whatever you believe in that you have been able to live your life to this point without having to go to Horton. Go party it up in Galena, or Hiawatha, or Liberal, or Oakley. Ask Santa for a customer made t-shirt that says, "At least I am not in Horton."

Chetopa is also pretty bad, but it's no Galena. For some reason I thought it was in Oklahoma.
The only reason I could see anybody possibly considering Galena to be more livable than any other city in Kansas is that it is near Joplin, and a town like Chetopa is completely isolated. Still, on its own merits, Galena is the worst.
Grandview Plaza sounds like a trailer park to me. Are you sure that is a real city with its own government and everything?

I forgot about Parsons, it's up there.
Parsons was home to the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant. I did work there. The plant property was actually larger than the town itself. The plant was basically a bunch of shanty buildings spread out so that if something blew up, it just blew up that shanty. Every building was built as cheaply as possible so that if it blew, then the monetary damage was minimial. People went to work at a place that was purposely built cheap so that if they product they were working on blew up and killed/maimed them, at least their employeer was only out $15 on the facility. These buildings looked worse than barns that were abandonded 40 years ago, only inside they made cluster bombs.
In 2005 they announced they planned to close it, and did so in 2009. During those 4 years, the people of the town fought to keep it open. They actually fought for the right to go to a place designed with the possibility of blowing up for $10/hour.
I don't know if the place getting closed makes it a less depressing place to live or the fact they tried to keep it open and couldn't makes it a more depressing place to live.

I just did a google image search on Grandview Plaza. Wow. It's awful. At least it doesn't have a high school, though. Sending your kids to school in MHK has to sort of play into its favor. That is, unless you decide to send them to Junction City instead. I would still have to hear some anecdotal evidence to believe it's worse than some of those southeastern Kansas towns.

My high school league from best to worst. I might be forgetting a few, but none of these places are worth remembering.
Hillsboro: Clean living people close to McPherson which is one of the better towns in KS
Hesston: More clean living people with decent jobs
Lindsborg-Smoky Valley: People dedicated to their Swedish culture, weird but not messy
Wichita-Collegiate: actually idk where this goes, probably #1
Hoistington - Just a town on K-4
Haven- Ahead of the curve for declining rural towns
Sterling - Boring people doing drugs for ANY sense of excitement
Ellinwood - Oily yet poor
Marion - Always got a hillbilly feel from these people
Nickerson: My god. A suburb of Hutchinson. Voodooville would be a more appropriate name. Poor and mean.

doesn't Liberal have a little shitty strip club that they moved over onto the Oklahoma side of the line?
Oh man, there's an Emo EMAW story. :sdeek:
do tell.

Oh man, there's an Emo EMAW story. :sdeek:
do tell.
Was there for pheasant opener. Apparently the place (this was in still in Liberal) had just lost their license so the three strippers there were forced to dance in like bikini's. There were two younger stripers (one white, one hispanic, both pretty dern good for Liberal) and then one older queen stripper (pretty gross and mean). Technically the bar was a different business (for license reasons or something) than the strip club so you had to exit the strip club to buy pitchers of beer (super cheap) and then bring the pitcher back to the strip club. When we first walked in it was packed with some hunters and then a bunch of locals of hispanic descent. We were looking for place to sit and people got shifty and the queen stripper yelled at us to sit down and I was forced to sit in a chair that didn't have a cushion, so like my ass fell through the frame a little bit. After a while the queen stripper did this move where she laid on the stage and hooked the heel of her stripper shoes on the bar. She seemed like she lacked the flexibility to unhook it so I pointed and laughed and said "she's stuck!" Well she heard me only she thought I said "she sucks." She was pissed and jumped up with her belt and was yelling at me to take off my shirt and she was trying to get my belt off and she was going to beat the crap out of me and then this big ole boy stands up and proclaims "ma'am I'll take his beatin'." She lit into him pretty good. I was pretty scared.
Elaborate this part of the story. I feel like you are leaving out details and not telling this story with enough zeal.doesn't Liberal have a little shitty strip club that they moved over onto the Oklahoma side of the line?

I assume life in Fort Scott is terrible, based on driving through. Same with Ottawa.
I bet you see no less than 20 anti-abortion signs between Pittsburg and Galena.
I don't think Parsons is in the same discussion as some of these other towns. It's kind of old and run down but it's not terrible.
Horton has a triage unit established by FEMA. It's a permanent facility.I bet you see no less than 20 anti-abortion signs between Pittsburg and Galena.

On Bubbles post, I found something very interesting about the perception of small towns. I listed the populations of each city in bold.My high school league from best to worst. I might be forgetting a few, but none of these places are worth remembering.
Hillsboro 2,993: Clean living people close to McPherson which is one of the better towns in KS
Hesston 3,709: More clean living people with decent jobs
Lindsborg 3,458-Smoky Valley: People dedicated to their Swedish culture, weird but not messy
Wichita-Collegiate ignore: actually idk where this goes, probably #1
Hoistington 2,706- Just a town on K-4
Haven 1,237- Ahead of the curve for declining rural towns
Sterling 2,328- Boring people doing drugs for ANY sense of excitement
Ellinwood 2,131- Oily yet poor
Marion 1,927- Always got a hillbilly feel from these people
Nickerson 1,070: My god. A suburb of Hutchinson. Voodooville would be a more appropriate name. Poor and mean.
It appears that by Bubbles standards, a town clearly needs at least 2,900 residents for a base to create a nice place to live. Apparently 2,900 is the magic number to have enough commerce to sustain nice stores and enough tax base for a nice, clean infrastructure. I would also like to point out that Hoisington, with a population of 2,700 is in the middle ground and also got a middle ground response from Bubbles. Nothing positive or negative, just "a town".
If you have a population above 2,900 and still can't get it together, then you should qualify for this "Coffeeville Shithole" award as Heston, Hillsboro, and Lindsborg have shown that is a large enough population to get your crap together.
Now I just want to see photoshops of city limit signs and post cards with awkwardly true assessments of the nominated town.

Do any of these towns have a terrifying concrete shrine built by an insane old pedophile that has a mausoleum with his mummified corpse inside?Lucas has already been confirmed as awesome. Give it up.

Where is the place on 70 that adv's for the 6 legged steer and the worlds largest ground hog. Never stopped in, but I bet that place should be on this half fictional list of names.Oakley and it has.
I always thought the wind chimes out by Mullinville are very strange, and I'm kind of surprised Mullinville hasn't been nominated. Maybe it's nicer than it looks when you are driving through. :dunno:

Heard an NPR thing this year about how small towns in western KS is adopting the Doctors Without Boarders method of attracting new doctors to come to Western KS to serve time.
FR_BIL is a pretty elite oncologist currently serving indentured servitude in Hutch. He is NOT impressed by the space museum and would probably vote Hutch for the Mrs Gooch Coffeyville Gross Fights at Fairgrounds after the Demo Derby Trophy brought to you by abandoned Dairy Queens and Frito Pies.

Burlingame.
It has an Allen County Community College extension campus.
I love little western Kansas towns, like a lot. Good people live there and most of them are K-State fans. That's worth a lot of points.Well, yeah, I think we can all agree JC suburbs are awful in their own special way.
That list of some kids' league schools -- Sterling, Hillsboro, Lindsborg -- when I was a kid I dreamed of my parents moving us out there where we could farm and stuff. But nope. Stuck in the JC suburbs, which in some ways are completely awful and full of KU people.
Add Mulvane, KS to the list then. Has a Cowley County Community college office.Burlingame.

Wow. That is definitely an RPI booster. An extension campus of a juco is going to catch the committee's eye.
and Wamego right? (with the CC extension thing)Wamego has some redeeming qualities to it. I don't think they can be included. JMO.

Any Kansas town that you pronounce wrong (and then draw the wrath of a former native)
Including Kechi, Cheney, LeRoy, etc
Had a roomie in college that lived out in far western KS. Had to drive 2hrs one way to go to freaking wal-mart. I don't even. I mean, we should set up a mission/self help clinic out there or something right?
Do any of these towns have a terrible smell? That is a requirement for any Coffeyville themed award. And OLD SETTLER DAYS!!!!!!!!!!
Also, Mulvane is off the list just because they have Luciano's. :lick:

I can confirm Cheney is pretty terrible. Grew up in Goddard which is also terrible but at least it's close to Wichita which is slightly less terrible.
You could take everything south of US-50 and give it to Oklahoma and I wouldn't care/notice.

Oh man. We are also gonna need a side list of best "days" celebration. "Old Sailor and Soldiers" is nice because its proclaimed next to a huge roadside ditch that's always flooded and has a tire island, but Little Balkans Days is just a great WTF Kansas tradition.

Cheney suffers from proximity to Coffeyville. But gets bonus points for not being a weirdo cult like Tyro.

everyone focused on much smaller towns. i think we need to break it down into town sizes and state quadrants personally but felix apparently wants nothing to do with it.
What a treat of a thread. Thanks for this, Felix.
It's great because so many of us who have been around Kansas know exactly the feeling...when you're in some little (or medium-sized) town somewhere in Kansas and you suddenly think to yourself: "Dear lord. There are people who actually live here. I couldn't imagine...in a million years..."
Those co-op towns that are DQ'd tend to depress me the most because there used to be more going on there and now there are zero businesses, but people still live there in old houses that sell for $15,000, and you wonder, "what do these people do to make money?" Sure, some of them farm, but there are more houses in there. Greeley is a good example of this. I guess maybe folks go into Osawotamie or Garnett to work. :dunno:
SEK does seem to be the worst in a lot of ways, though. How about those KDOT signs along highways like US 169 that say "attractions" and then list things like "Sleep Inn" or "Dairy Queen"? Oof.

There are some good jobs in small towns, and small town life really isn't that bad if you have enough money to live large. Something I have noticed, at least in southeast Kansas, is that most of the people who have good jobs live a few miles outside of town.

A place so horrible they give you a free piece of land to put your trailer on.
Does anyone know if Potwin is a crappy place to live? I know they have a large feedlot just southwest of town. Could qualify under chunkles rule.
Greeley is a good example of this. I guess maybe folks go into Osawotamie or Garnett to work. :dunno:Greeley had an all-nude strip bar for a while. Probably lost a lot of jobs when it closed down.
Small towns, at least the ones that aren't completely dying, seem to get better the farther west you go.
dear god, sorry you all have wasted so much of your day. I couldn't post until just now. Anywho:Horton disagrees with you.
JFC IT'S LARNED
does your 2nd worst town have two feedlots on either side of it, producing a fine dusting of crap smell no matter which direction the wind is blowing?
What is missing in your oh so horrible, yet non-crap smell town?
El Dorado, LOL (lived there. it smells, but not like crap) has a community college and an awesome lake. NOPE.
Rush Center is pud but doesn't smell like crap. NICE TRY ASSHOLES
Those swedish towns have these cathedrals that are like a mile tall that people enjoy. They also don't smell like crap. OUT.
Great Bend is called Great Bend because of the river that bends within the town. It has a river. Smells shitty sometimes... river auto-disqualifies.
Ark City is bad. Blackface mayor guy from a few years ago, desperately tries to be in Oklahoma, yet no discernable crap smell. eff OFF THEN.
Dodge City. Very tempting choice. Pig crap smell is worse than cow crap. Still, history and new cultures are fun, right?
lest we forget Kansas City Kansas is in Kansas. Raceway/legends is basically Edwardsville, so eff off. That said, no unavoidable crap smell.
Larned. Nothing to see there. Fort Larned is like other boring forts, except when you're done visiting you just go back to smelling crap all day in a boring crap-smell town. Funfact: Larned has no funfacts because it is goddamn full of shattered dreams and constant crap smell.

Onaga and Centralia are really shittyCentralia has a swimming pool (possibly getting a new pool), they also have the team that beat Smith Center in State Football a few years ago. They almost beat Meade this year (Meade is in the running for best town, so almost beating them is a feather in the Centralia cap). Plus, John Riggins.

Hey! Old settler's day and homemade ice cream. There's two gas stations. However, one might not be operational anymore. No liquor store, but there is a bar. Council Grove is only like 15 minutes away and Manhattan is 30 minutes to the north.
AV is pretty dumpy, but does not belong in this discussion.
Proximity to Manhattan, low crime rate, has a gas station, barber shop, bar, restaurant and grocery store and does not smell particularly bad. There are stand-outs competing for the top spot on this list. Alta Vista, despite it's run-downness, is not particularly bad.You really just needed to say, "It's not Horton."
Alta Vista. There is only one gas station within 20 minutes, and the owner just shows up and works there whenever he wants to. Does not take credit cards, so you can only fill up when he's there.
Jakesie must have relatives in AV too.
Probably Topeka.
Does anyone know if Potwin is a crappy place to live? I know they have a large feedlot just southwest of town. Could qualify under chunkles rule.
Colwich is pretty.
Colwich is pretty.
totally agree.
Probably Topeka.
Which podunk western ks trash hole are you from?
Western KS smells like money. SE KS smells like ass.SE quadrant is the worst overall. I don't think it is even close, although the fact that Horton is in the NE quadrant made me hesitate.
No way. Western KS is terrible.
Wellsville is pretty shitty
can confirm. also la cygne. and blue mound. and garnett. and parker.
Those are all disqualified because you made them up.

I'm glad to see SEK represented so well, something to hang their hat on. Parsons, C'ville, Chetopa, Galena, Girard, Oswego...........I'll nominate Humbolt. Biblesta.

Also don't understand Katy Days in Parsons. Celebrate a railroad that took a giant dump on the town, talk about low self-esteem. Drove around town and noticed how they use plywood as window treatment, amazing.
I've been through Horton and it's a shithole but I'll throw my vote behind C'ville.......tops.
So I can't vote for the current leader? Drive around Parsons sometimes with open eyes.....these homes are condemned and not from the tornado 12 yrs ago.
Get your crap straight.

This is for the 2nd worst. Coffeyville is the undisputed worst.
Has it been 12 years already? I was being sarcastic. I don't drive around Parsons, just through it about 4 or 5 times a year.
Parsons has some neighborhoods that are actually pretty nice. Most of those people send their kids to school at Altamont, but choose to live in Parsons. For this reason alone, I have a hard time believing they are actually second worst. I mean, why not just move to Altamont if Parsons is so bad?

No Super Walmart in Altamont.

They drive their kids to school at Altamont five days per week, though. Wouldn't it be better to drive to the Super Walmart in Parsons once per week?
Colwich also has a failed lumber yard. The owner has been trying to sell the property for about a decade. Has been reduced to trying to rent. No takers so far. Have you ever smelled fermented milo. It is flavo-ass with a tangy twist.

I got really PAK'd in Colwich once. Not sure how that adds to the discussion :dunno:

The "Great Flood" happened between my frosh and soph years, may have actually helped the city not be so shitty.
The "Great Flood" happened between my frosh and soph years, may have actually helped the city not be so shitty.
Colwich is pretty awful.
They have an alcohol plant just east of town. It make the entire place reek of fermented milo. There is a new business that engineers/invents new industrial equipment, but they lay people off as fast as they hire. The town had a nice ball diamond but the ball club sold it to the school district so they could expand the grade school yet they still have mobile unit class rooms. :dunno: The new diamonds are ok but are depressing because all the new trees and shrubs planted are dying because of the record drought.
There is a power plant just east of town that caught on fire last week and will cost $8 million to repair the damage. Also a forest of radio/tv towers litter the eastern horizon. You would think that your radio would be able to pick up a signal on the other side of the planet being so close to all those towers. Nope all you get is static. The cooling towers from the power plant produce their own clouds some times. The radio towers are also magnets for lightning strikes wich almost makes the towers worth while but still an eye sore 99% of the year.
Oh and the town water treatment facility is just west of town 50 yrds south of the main road and on hot days your car's a/c will blow the cent of human crap in your face. It's a late entry but feels like a strong contender to me. The only thing saving this town is being in close proximity to Wichita.
Colwich now has TWO bars. In celebration, a small group of friends did a pub crawl there last Christmas.
The town has plenty of drawbacks, sure:
Super religious anti-abortion signs in every field
Crazy guitar lady at church
Lady who thinks there is an angel living in her barn
Sign at city limit that states "Home of Joel Weber, Speedboat Champion" or something
Priest forbid alcohol during receptions held in church assembly hall (This ban may have since been overturned.)
Ethanol plant
But it has pros:
Gambino's Pizza
Two bars, both serving food
Liquor store
Gas station that had the arcade version of Double Dragon for like 3 months in 1987
Small grocery store sells meat from Goddard locker
Elite Co-op
5 minutes from new hospital, 10 minutes from West Wichita
Colwich does not belong in this discussion. If you want a candidate for worst town in Western Sedgwick County, go with Garden Plain.

What a depressing thread. Thought there'd be a winner (loser?) by page 15.
If you're from, still know people in, are god forbid still yourself are in one of these crap towns, you should let me know, so that when I'm trying to locate people I've sued or want to sue that come from these places, I can use you to skip trace them. steve dave is combing Meade for one of these folks as we speak. Gooch and I went undercover in a bar that, while in Wichita, belonged in a worst down in KS candidate on Sunday.
Do I have any Manter, KS insiders?

Driven thru there many times heading out to the great mountains of Colorado. Only thing I can tell you is they have a sign of some famous rodeo/bullrider guy that is/was from there.

Yes, the flood wiped out 1/3 of the town, but it was the shittiest part of town so it increased the average home value in town. Also because of the oil, the refinery paid the homeowners 110% of the pre-flood value of the homes that had oil damage - so those people actually ended up better off after the flood.

Better off = able to buy cigarettes on the kansas side during the week until the Sunday south coffeyville run to buy beer through the drive thru window of a gas station.
Colwich/Andale (same diff) definitely get knocked down a peg for having like 3 last names between the two towns.

My high school league from best to worst. I might be forgetting a few, but none of these places are worth remembering.nice job forgetting lyons
GC won this thing like a week ago
DNR entire thread but I'm sure Emporia got some good play
DNR entire thread but I'm sure Emporia got some good play
It has two Braums which automatically disqualifies it. Besides the glory days of the entire town smelling like burning cow hide due to IBP are long gone.
Is that the town that is on the way from MHK to 'chita that is right by the round-a-bout that has a water tower that looks like a big cigarette??
If so, yeah, pretty shitty town.
Horton had spent the past several months seeking a league after it was announced last June that the Delaware Valley League would be disbanding with the withdrawal of eight schools — Immaculata, Jackson Heights, Jefferson North, Maur Hill-Mt. Academy, McLouth, Oskaloosa, Pleasant Ridge and Valley Falls. Those schools broke away from the 14-team league to form the Northeast Kansas League, expressing their desire to be a part of a smaller league.
The ensuing ripple effect left Horton, Doniphan West, Atchison County, Riverside and Troy searching for homes and all but Horton were successful. Atchison County and Riverside will join the Big Seven League, while Doniphan West and Troy were accepted into the Twin Valley League.
Horton applied for membership into both leagues, but was denied by league votes — a 5-3 margin in the Big Seven and an 8-3-1 margin in the Twin Valley. That left Horton without a league and led to their request to be placed in one by the KSHSAA.
Any list with Lansing on it is Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!). Not saying it's a great place, just not awful. Lots of nice neighborhoods on the south side of town (homes $400k+), plenty of military officers who have lived all over the world (including international officers studying at the CGSC), good school district.
Obvious cons are the prison and proximity to Leavenworth.
Police: Cyclist Had Meth Lab in Backpack
Associated Press - Wed 07:13 PM 06/26/2013
Police say a search of the backpack turned up what they called an active, "one-pot" mobile meth lab.
If only he'd been riding in the street, a bicyclist who Pittsburg police say had a meth lab in his backpack might have gone unnoticed.
But the 29-year-old man from Nevada, Mo., caught the eye of an officer in the southeast Kansas community Tuesday morning because he was riding on a sidewalk.
The officer tried to make contact with the bicyclist. The man instead rode away before he was stopped a few blocks away.
Police say a search of his backpack turned up what they called an active, "one-pot" mobile meth lab. The man was arrested on suspicion of making and possessing methamphetamine, felony possession of drug paraphernalia, and obstruction.
He also got a ticket for riding a bike on the sidewalk.

Wow, I had never stepped foot in this thread. Just read the whole thing. :sdeek:
Very very depressing thread. I am not from KS and have zero family members in KS and I feel like there should be like some sort of password required to read this thread that only people from KS or people who have family members in KS can get into it and read it.
Also, yes, jmlynch, La Cygne is the one near the pond.
Prairie Village. 'Cause eff those rich bastards.

Oh the same rules should apply to a Missouri thread of similar nature. I don't really have any small-town relatives either though, so that could be part of the :sdeek:

I bet a worst town in Missouri thread would be much more depressing than the Kansas thread. The worst towns in Kansas can attribute most of their problems from spillover from SW Missouri and NE Oklahoma, after all. It's just too bad we don't have more mocats to really get one going.
Just saw this thread...after traveling extensivley for 10 years to every corner of Kansas for my former job, I feel well qualified to add to this discussion. There are several glaring omissions:
Kingman
Protection
Ashland
Longton
Agree with these two that were mentioned: Eureka and Elwood
My worst would probably be Protection, however I never had to stay the night there...as far as a location that had the means to support overnight out of town visitors, I'd have to go with Elwood, with Kingman coming a close second.
I bet you see no less than 20 anti-abortion signs between Pittsburg and Galena.
I don't think Parsons is in the same discussion as some of these other towns. It's kind of old and run down but it's not terrible.
Parsons also has a decent medical facility. It couldn't be that bad.
One of my facebook friends had a friend who died at the Parsons hospital getting his tonsils taken out last year. You might want to reassess that.
They offered Mrs. BF a job and a free house.
If you aren't naming SE Kansas towns, you have no place in this thread.
Also, Stockton or Washington or Baldwin City

Very interesting approach. It reminds me of a developing tournament bracket. Is that where we're headed, Reboulet? If so, it's a bit unbalanced in numbers, so who will get the crucial first round byes?
Haysville easily wins the Sedgwick county title.
This town has been repeatedly hit by tornados but just won't die.
The majority of the houses are tiny post WWII spec homes and most have dead cars in the yard or out in the street by the curb.
They had a doctor and his wife goto Federal prison for running a pill mill, and they've lost a Dairy Queen too.
Just recently somebody threw a dead body in the ditch across from the high school.
People from this town pause and wait for your laughable response when they tell you they're from there.
If this place wasn't so close to Wichita it would hands down win the title
gE makes the news again, i'm surprised no links were posted in the article.I looked back at the discussion and here is how I'd divide the races. SEK stands alone, clearly, and the rest are separated by population. I felt it was important to separate suburbs from stand-alone towns, and I added Haysville because I felt south Wichita suburbs were underrepresented. The order within each division is my personal rankings; where my experience was limited I went with the most persuasive board opinion.

The over all picture in Indep. is very sad depressing dirty ruin down most important is the extreme cost of everything for no real reason gas, sales tax, property tax, food, nothing to show for the high cost of living here. It won't take much longer as the mass exodus has begun. The only ones left will be the ones who can't leave.
Did we overthink this entire thread? If the worst town in Kansas is Coffeyville, it would logically follow that the second-worst town is the one with a Coffeyville rivalry: Independence.
Googling their rivalry led me to this very depressing discussion of which town's Wal-Mart was better:

Wow, just read this thread for the first time. Personally think Galena takes the cake with Baxter Springs, Parsons, and the other extreme SE shitholes also receiving consideration. But how the eff does Iola not get at least a mention? I mean seriously eff that town. Possibly the shittiest McDonalds and Sonic on earth right across the street from each other. And ACCC? :Yuck: Also Osawatomie only mentioned once? Come on. LaCygne and Garnett are resort towns next to those two.

Garnett is boring as crap, quite possibly the most boring town with 3k+, but from an aesthetics standpoint it blows Iola out of the water. And Garnett isn't that good looking of a town.

Trash tends to hang with trash :dunno:
I mean Atchison is a crap hole, that goes without saying. But we are debating the shittiest of holes, and I don't think Atchison is that shitty. I mean doesn't Russell or somewhere literally smell like crap 24/7?
I have a lot of friends from Atchison. They're amazing ppl. Also, Amelia Earhart days are a lot of fun.

As long as you keep your phone in your pocket and all of your electronics secured, I'm sure they're a treat to be around.
Wow, sounds like he's a pretty big deal. :Wha:I know, man. Scary story alert. He had a private plane that he flew for the company from time to time. Two years ago I flew down to ft worth with him for the TCU game. A month later that same plane crashed and killed 4 ppl in it. It had some kind of malfunction. :ohno:

HAYSVILLE — A Kansas teenager is recovering at home after spending three days in intensive care recovering from a scorpion sting.
Fifteen-year-old Parker Hartley of Haysville Hartley was bitten Friday after he played Frisbee Golf at a park in Haysville, while he was barefoot. He put on his shoes after the game and felt a sharp sting and instant pain.
KAKE-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1mjRskI ) Hartley’s parents at first thought he had been stung by a bee or wasp. But within 24 hours, his foot had swollen and Hartley said the pain was unbearable. A nurse at Wesley’s emergency room recognized the sting and he was hospitalized.
Experts say scorpions hide in dark places, so check your shoes if they’ve been outside, or in sheds.

Which state are you from?
Oh the same rules should apply to a Missouri thread of similar nature. I don't really have any small-town relatives either though, so that could be part of the :sdeek:
I bet a worst town in Missouri thread would be much more depressing than the Kansas thread. The worst towns in Kansas can attribute most of their problems from spillover from SW Missouri and NE Oklahoma, after all. It's just too bad we don't have more mocats to really get one going.
There is also a problem with putting Coffeyville on the list.

Obvious Mrs Gooch sock.
No way you can put Hutchinson on this list. Any town that has the Cosmosphere is automatically disqualified from being the 2nd worst anything. There is also a problem with putting Coffeyville on the list. There is a Perry Maxwell designed golf course in Coffeyville. And with all the SE Kansas towns being listed how has Humboldt been left out? Iola is down right cosmopolitan compared to Humboldt.Do you even biblesta bro?
SE KS, SW MO, and NE OK are the most depressing areas ever. no question, no doubt. I once visited a friend at Pitt State, did not do again.

You should listen to the song by Kid Dakota entitled Pine Ridge.SE KS, SW MO, and NE OK are the most depressing areas ever. no question, no doubt. I once visited a friend at Pitt State, did not do again.
Pine Ridge, South Dakota (Pine Ridge Indian Reservation)
Everything looks, sounds, smells, (and I would imagine though I did not gather data on these two senses) tastes, and feels like poverty and alcoholism.
Back to Kansas, there have been a lot of references to old and declining mining towns and old and declining oil and gas towns. However the old and declining railroad towns (like Herington) are getting neglected here.
As far as interstate signs go my vote goes to the ones on I-70 wanting you to be sure to stop and visit Liberal while you are on your way to either northern Colorado or central Missouri.
Straight talk (honest) about SEK: Coffeyville makes Parsons look charming and quaint. It's like a Parsons dip cone, but the shell is oil runoff and the inside is hot garbage and abandoned wal-marts.

It's Galena, right?
Sinkholes from abandoned mines have plagued Galena for years. Three small, but deep, ones developed earlier this month near city hall, at a mobile home court and on a street.
This is about all that's left of the town my dad grew up in, Carneiro, KS.i drove by that town one summer day and there was what looked like an impromptu, all mexican rodeo. it was in the early afternoon and there weren't any signs or decoration but hundreds of these rancheros were sitting on the corral fence watching dudes wrestle steers. looked extremely unsafe and awesome.

Straight talk (honest) about SEK: Coffeyville makes Parsons look charming and quaint. It's like a Parsons dip cone, but the shell is oil runoff and the inside is hot garbage and abandoned wal-marts.
New Cambria still exists, you noobs.
this should be broken into quadrants, there are so many crappy towns.
i'm totally impartial having not grown up in KS so i have no rival town or these people suck or my town is the worst because...
SE-Galena, it is a superfund site and the whole town was bought out; case closed.
NE-Elwood, devastated by the '93 flood and is little bro to St. Joe, MO.
SW-Protection/Kingman; both are just horrible
NW-Norton/St. Francis; tough call both are the worst of what is probably the "nicest" part of the state
If you go bigger than XXXX residents, that might change the list, but for realz guyz, to quote choice hotels, "I've been everywhere, man" -in KS.
This is about all that's left of the town my dad grew up in, Carneiro, KS.

I looked back at the discussion and here is how I'd divide the races.

It's truly remarkable that anyone grows up in SEK and lives past the age of 25.
In the SEK, we don't accidentally reach adulthood. We earn it. Evolutionarily speaking, it's probably why we start procreating at such an early age. Thank god I grew up in that coffeyville/parsons/border triangle. It prepared me.When Cairo was burning it down, FR was thinking "back home we call this Friday night".
Well I grew up in the most dangerous city in Kansas and then moved to the second most dangerous city in Kansas. I'm surprised I haven't been raped and murdered yet.

Pretty sure I witnessed a drug deal go down (while I was watching my kids) at the Parsons arboretum.
i just did a street view to find the exact street and my god coffeyville is worse than i rememeber. anyways there was a liquor store across the street from campus and from the looks of street view its long since closed down. i was having one of my teammates who was 21 buy me booze for a binge at this liquor store, this car pulls up beside us(i was waiting in the car) and he knocks on the window and has a bag of weed, and he asks if i need any. now this is at night and all, but :sdeek:
also from street view i see the lone bright spot of coffeyville, the neighborhood taco mayo is still doing well. lots of great memories eating this fine establishments food after a long night of paking.

Did you look at the east side of town? It is kind of eerie with no houses.
Also, I worked at Taco Mayo when I was in high school - it was in a different location then though.
when I was there, taco tico, yes, taco tico, had something like 29 cent tacos on sundays.. that was pretty neat.
coffeyville authentic mexican fast food rankings:
1. taco mayo
2. taco tico
3. taco bell
I was born in Wichita so that clearly eliminates it from being the 2nd worst city. It's 4th or 5th, tops.
Mrs. Bf volunteered to work the thanksgiving schedule at Parsons. Looks like we'll be counting the police cars as they barrel past our loft on turkey day. I wonder if we'll beat the record. I'm betting on some trash Chiefs fan murdering his brother over the outcome of some football game.

so, does Parsons take the crown? I've heard the Meth really flows down there. Like, if you want Meth just go knock on your neighbors door.

Growing up in JOCO my next door neighbors had a kid(TJ) my exact same age, we were BFF's up until middle school (They also had a another boy that was the same age as my little brother). After all the kids graduated high school they moved out to SE Kansas, closest town is Parsons.
I really want to find an excuse to go down an visit them just to see what parsons is really like.

Proximity to JoCo retail services would appear to take them out of contention. Parsons, Riverton, Baxter Springs et al only have remote access to the greater Joplin metro area.

This was a rule at my high school, but the students just grinded front to front. . .which in my opinion is worse.
Also, the article says Buhler doesn't have rules against grinding, but when I went to dances there they had really strict rules against grinding. I'm starting to doubt the legitimacy of this article.

What happens when a yodder teenager gets pregnant?I really have not heard of any getting pregnant. Rumor has it the horny amish boys suck their wallies in boiling water before a roll in the wheat. Maybe they use a homemade or second hand condom. I suppose this would lead to marriage. The under belly of Yoder is dark and seedy. A good place for a horse soap opera.

How long do you think that rubble will just stay there where the house burnt down? 1 year? 2?

Where was it located? I will stop by and give a status this weekend.

None of the house fire photos have captions, so I don't know.

Is this caused by the aerosol plant explosion in Neodesha? Which is effecting a lot of towns, and not just Coffeyville, right?

Yeah. It will be Oklahoma's problem soon enough (probably already is).

Yes. A lot of people commented to that effect and she said something like, "This post is about Coffeyville. If you want to say something about your town then you can make your own post."
Got the windows on my new car shot out in Dodge City on Thanksgiving night. :bang:Just cowboys blowing off some steam after months on the hot, dusty trail.
Not to be out done by Wichita, Coffeyville is keeping up with the murder rate (per capita).
Why red?

WTF, Coffeyville. I'm getting scared to go there this weekend.
Martin used bitcoins, which are a form of digital currency used in peer-to-peer online transactions, to seek the purchase of the grenade via the encrypted website.
...
However, the FBI was able to intercept the message and conducted a controlled delivery of an inert explosive device, intended to be Martin's initial purchase, to Martin's address.
...
The Associated Press interviewed Gradert, who said his client was a "kind of a dumb 18-year-old kid" who wanted to used the grenade to blow up a truck as revenge because someone had damaged his mother's car.
Has anyone heard from the TBT lately?
And now apparently a high school student has been arrested for threatening to shoot everyone who was wearing red to school tomorrow.
Has anyone heard from the TBT lately?
They only said "kind of dumb."
Moses made a first appearance Thursday afternoon in Judge Robert Fleming’s courtroom. The case was assigned to Judge Jeffry Jack, but Jack was conducting a wedding ceremony in his courtroom.
Topeka is it now, right? 4 people got murdered in a shooting yesterday and there's another one today. I wouldn't feel save going to Dillion's if I lived in Topeka. :Yuck:

Park City is a valuable asset to SC KS.
I really don't like Washington or Lawrence. Spring Hill rough ridin' sucks too. There's also a town North of Wichita that is identical to Raytown/South KCMO, so obv shitty
Long story short, I stumbled into a night at the Coffeyville fair earlier this month and actually enjoyed it.
Got pretty wrecked and ended up at the bar downtown, was a solid 8-10 people there.

I walked into West Ridge Mall this past weekend, for the first time in over a decade. Can I change my vote to Topeka?

West Ridge used to be such an awesome place when I was a kid. KB Toys, Old Country Buffet, Laser Tag, Sbarro, theater. How the mighty have fallen.

Oooo, Osawatomie is a good one.
- Home to the state insane asylum
- Technically part of the KC Metro area but feels like a small town in SE Kansas
- John Brown history connections
I went fishing on the Marais Des Cygnes river one time and got some weird vibes driving through town, like they knew I was from out of town and were watching me.
'nother drive by in Parsons.

lacygne is awesome. it's an ozarks hillbilly town transplanted to KSI really need to go there an see how it compares to Blue Mound.
These shithole SEK towns embrace their identity and revel in it. In fact, all of SEK does and I find it fascinating that these people embrace the decay.Quotelacygne is awesome. it's an ozarks hillbilly town transplanted to KSI really need to go there an see how it compares to Blue Mound.

It's Blue Mound with a power plant. Neither has the historic significance of Mapleton.

Been years since I've been to Mapleton, last I heard they lost their gas service.
Do we talk about random KS small towns and why they are unique/weird here or does that need its own thread? I think it needs its own imo.Atwood KS has a tank in the parking lot of a Casey's
Example - Cawker City with the twine thing.

Some people on this board have some thinking to do about shaming Coffeyville:Very weird list. I think they are using a bot to write those things nowadays. I did not know that Marysville was a "retirement destination." Maybe for folks from Bremen or Beattie?

The Coffeyville picture is some random house that's not even nice or unique.
I'm surprised nobody has nominated Salina yet
Rankings of mid-sized Kansas Cities without major colleges.
Best to worst:
Salina > Hutchinson > Garden City > Dodge City
I was going to make an argument on Hutch being in front of Salina, but the Salina Mall vs the Hutch Mall /Empty Ghost Mall is probably worth enough points to push Salina back in front. But there is a large gap between Hutch and Garden City.
Just got back from Independence.
Holy mother of God it’s insanely expensive to go out to eat in South East Kansas
17.99 for chicken fingers and fries
These rubes are being price gouged by all the business owners.
