went to school there for a year and had tons of fun because of who i was living with.  the town is rough ridin' terrible though.  you have to drive to st. joe to eat or even get grocerys, and that means driving though smellwood.  the laundromat (in the gas station) in town smelled like an ashtray.

Hey! Old settler's day and homemade ice cream. There's two gas stations. However, one might not be operational anymore. No liquor store, but there is a bar. Council Grove is only like 15 minutes away and Manhattan is 30 minutes to the north.

O man, forgot about that place!

I was about to run out of gas one time and stopped there because it was the only station I could make it to...I was incredibly hung over on a sunday morning and just stared at the pump for about 5 minutes trying to find the place that takes your card.

The owner was driving by and stopped. I explained that all I had was cards and just needed some gas to make it back to manhattan. The guy gave me a couple of gallons for free and I was on my way.

That right there should be disqualify alta vista.

1. Proximity to Manhattan? It's a 20 minute drive if you're flying.
2. Low crime rate is a myth. The park gets vandalized all the time. Lots of underage smokers, too.
3. Already covered the gas station.
4. Was unaware of the barber shop.
5. Have not been in the bar.
6. Restaurant is awful. You get to choose one of two plates. Both are awful.
7. Grocery store is not sufficient. Everyone that lives there drives to Manhattan or Council Grove to shop. Can you imagine that? "Well honey, we're out of batteries" "Okay, I'll run to Manhattan, be back in an hour!"
8. This is a plus. It smells amazing. Like you're in the middle of a beautiful prairie, surrounded by thousands of wild flowers.

1. Other than the old people living in and around AV, who drives slow?
2. The park recently got decked out with all new equipment, much nicer than when I was a kid.
3. Gas station owner will patch the tire on your bicycle for free
4. He sits outside his shop and talks to everyone, very nice guy with an incredible beard.
5. The bar is a typical small town bar, not much going on. They have karaoke once a week, not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
6. Restaurant has a serviceable chicken fried steak, pizza night on Wednesdays, unlimited salad bar for three bucks.
7. If you run out of batteries, butter or milk the grocery store works in a pinch. If you're going to buy two weeks of groceries you go to Manhattan or Council Grove.
8. Really does smell good.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to live in AV, but it does not belong in the running for the Coffeyville Cup.

I think we should remove any town that has a liquor store from consideration. This may only leave towns below the bubbles line, but I'm not sure.  Any towns above the bubbles line that have neither a liquor store, nor a bar, might as well not even exist.

Colwich is pretty awful. 

   They have an alcohol plant just east of town.  It make the entire place reek of fermented milo.  There is a new business that engineers/invents new industrial equipment, but they lay people off as fast as they hire.  The town had a nice ball diamond but the ball club sold it to the school district so they could expand the grade school yet they still have mobile unit class rooms.     The new diamonds are ok but are depressing because all the new trees and shrubs planted are dying because of the record drought. 

   There is a power plant just east of town that caught on fire last week and will cost $8 million to repair the damage.  Also a forest of radio/tv towers litter the eastern horizon.  You would think that your radio would be able to pick up a signal on the other side of the planet being so close to all those towers.  Nope all you get is static.  The cooling towers from the power plant produce their own clouds some times.  The radio towers are also magnets for lightning strikes wich almost makes the towers worth while but still an eye sore 99%  of the year. 

   Oh and the town water treatment facility is just west of town 50 yrds south of the main road and on hot days your car's a/c will blow the cent of human crap in your face.  It's a late entry but feels like a strong contender to me.  The only thing saving this town is being in close proximity to Wichita.

Does anyone know if Potwin is a crappy place to live?  I know they have a large feedlot just southwest of town.  Could qualify under chunkles rule.

Can confirm that Potwin the town is not a great place to live but the country outside of it is magnificent.  I got a good whiff going to school every morning and it smelled like money was pouring out of the Circle E Feedlot.
