What is everyone planting this year? I'm going to put in two roma tomato plants and a bunch of herbs (basil and cilantro mostly). I'm also giving myself the option of planting one chile plant and one green pepper plant but haven't committed. Anyone have a good recommendo for a versatile chile to plant that isn't a jalapeno, habanero or serrano?

what is?
-
actually went to the home depot and picked up some seeds yesterday.
To start, planting carrots, kale, swiss chard, lettuce, and broccoli.
Will probably do some squash, cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes when it warms up.

Doing some tomatoes, bell peps, sweet cherry tomatoes, and some pole beans this year.
Also have chives and basil.
Thought long and hard about planting cilantro but had many people tell me that if you don't pick it at the right time, it gets really bitter. So, no cilantro.
Thinking about some lettuce and parsley though. Haven't decided yet on these.
Have also thought about sweet potatoes. If I pull the trigger on these, it will be in the city's utility easement behind my fence. There is nothing else back there, and I know for a 100% fact that everything in the easement is at least 5' down(we live on a hill and I saw them install it all).
-
we tried to plant potatoes over the winter, they came out sorta weird. now i'm kind of beginning to doubt my gardening skills.
Is this the time of year to plant herbs and peppers and such?
-
chile pequin

very hot, crisp and fresh

strawberries are a lot of rough ridin' work.

Will ask Carlos and Joe what is going in my all organic garden this year and report back. I assume it mainly consists of plants that promote a great figure.
-
tomatoes, mint, parsley, and basil.
-
Mint is great for gardens. Really nice aroma for the entire yard.
-
i hate mint
-
plant some onions.
-
my wife makes a salad with mint, parsley and strawberries (<--from the store). I do not eat this salad.
-
Mint is great for gardens. Really nice aroma for the entire yard.
I hope so, as it will crowd out and spread all over the entire yard if not contained right.
-
i don't know what we're planting yet, but i built a terraced rock wall around the landscaping in my front yard this weekend and felt pretty elite about it. :gocho:
-
that sounds like a pretty bad ass terraced rock wall around the landscaping in your front yard

Can't the terraced rock be considered part of "the landscaping"?

i'll defer to the experts on that one KITNfury, i'm certainly not an expert. sorry but i don't have all the answers.

love landscaping. I don't think I could do gardening veggies, etc. though not sure my thumb is green enough.

Very disappointed, was waiting for an anti-cilantro retort. Even if I do love cilantro.

Try Chives, then. I grown mine in a pot that I leave out all year round(including winter) and it comes back every spring, which is pretty unheard of for other plants.
If you can't grow chives, then you should either hire a gardener and give them only generalized ideas of what you want and just roll with what they give you, or you should give up.
-
I think my basil died from the cold snap a few weeks ago. The parsley and mint and tomato plants that were right next to it are fine. I just assumed basil was a fp, tc, etc.

Are green onions just baby onions?

I don't like worms. Do you guys encounter many worms?

Try pepperoncini peppers.
Yes the rock is part of the landscaping.
No green onions are not just baby onions.

green onions are my fav onions.
Vadallia are a very close second.

Seems like a gigantic pain in the ass vs driving to the store and buying said items.
-
In the garden:
Tomatoes
Sweet Onions
Jalapenos
Potatoes
Sweet Corn
Spinach
Lettuce
Carrots
Green Beans
Peas
(probably forgetting something)
In the yard
Almond Tree
Peach Trees
Cherry Tree
Apple Trees

that's why I don't plant chiles they have at your local hyvee/dillons/bakers. also, basil and tomatoes are much better fresh.
-
Seems like a gigantic pain in the ass vs driving to the store and buying said items.
It's really not, especially for something like tomatoes. I mean seriously you just plant the tomatoes and then pick them when they turn red.

Mint can be invasive as hell. Have some chocolate mint that can't be killed :shakesfist: (ftp://:shakesfist:). I do like pulling every year though because of the aroma. (ftp://:love:)
Went to the farmers market over the weekend and picked up some Basil, Sage and Parsley. Can't do any veggies because I can't kill the bunnies (that will eat them) that are roaming around my house. Refuse to build a fence or some type of dumb looking bunny barricade.
-
my rabbit is free to eat all he wants. we usually have about 5 half eaten tomatoes on the vine at any one time. have at it little fella.
-
go to the store and make a list of the most expensive vegetables that you eat, plus the ones they don't have. then plant everything on the list.
lol, at these midwesterners complaining about mint being invasive. what do you people drink, one mojito a year?

Given your almond story, it is obviously the hungry squirrel.
-
I have Bannan peppers, jalapenos, cayan sp? and another kind of pepper I can't think of right now. Also sweet corn, squash, zuccini, watermelon, cantalope, pumpkins, cucumbers, potatos, tomatos 2 cherry 2 bigger tomatos, Bush beans, carrots, lettus. some strawberries, asparagus, grapes, raspberries, blackberries, winter onions, rubarb.
I don't care for rubarb but I cut it and take it to the cafe I eat at regularly and give it to the cook who makes great pies (I don't eat them but I've heard) She usually gives me a couple free meals for the produce also give her the asparagus for a soup she makes, more free meals.
Also just planted 3 new apple trees.

what rootstock? you should plant a lot more, but not just dessert apple varieties. i heard somewhere that in decent apple country you can expect about 5 tons of apples/acre in a good year.

I would have to look at the rootstock paper work. I really don't have room for many more and I only like desser apple varieties so no need to plant others. I realize these 3 are pretty similar but I like them. I don't expect to get any thing from these trees for at least 3 years they were bareroot and not very big.

Would like to know more about the Almond tree. Are you in ks? When/how many nuts does it produce?

yeah, i prolly would have gone w. the honeycrisp plus some more exotic varities. seems like fuji & gala are pretty common grocerystore apples (no offense). plus definitely some baking apples and cider apples. i mean, come on.
do these varieties do well in kansas? are you in kansas? the honeycrisp, at least, is a northerner and kansas seems like pretty poor apple country (no offense).
are these dwarfs? seems like the dwarfs would be easy to pick, but aesthetically, they just don't hit the spot, you know. i mean who wants to pick an apple from their apple bush, if you know what i mean.

Yes, I'm in Kansas, this is the tree's 3rd season, so this is the year it is supposed to start producing delicious almonds. (Really hope some come out honey-roasted, but I heard you have to have the right kind of bees to make them?) Between 5-10 years of age it is supposed to be at maximum production, and if all goes well supposedly 20 bushels/year.

I think I will add another one or two next year what do you suggeset? My parents apple tress produces many bushle every year of apples (red delicious). If you have a good pie apple that might work in Ks I might think about it.

I have my tomato plants in planters right below my back deck. In the morning, when I clean out my french press, I dump my grounds right on top of them.

Gardening seems like a little too much physical labor for you.

it's pretty easy. my sprinklers hit the place where I put the stuff so I'm not watering or anything.

if not, maybe a stayman's winesap? seems like it'd be kinda good and it was developed in kansas.

So ben ji's little brother works at a greenhouse and pretty much has free range to take any plant he wants to see how they will do in an actual garden.
Over the past month he has probably brought over $500 worth of plants to my house including some fancy tropical ones like a hibiscus tree, cape honeysuckle and a sago palm. These have all been potted and will have to be kept in the garage during the winter.
He also brought a ton of perrienials(sp), finished the front garden last week and just planted some along my shed in the backyard.

The seeds of the sago palm are highly poisonous

Gotcha, read about that and keep it in the front yard so lady doesnt get into it.

If you want some pro-tips, I would gladly give you some. I am guessing your bro has probably given you some already. The first thing you need to know is that the hibiscus tree should be watered every day once the weather warms up. You should have used a bigger pot. For several years I had hibiscus trees in some large 3 ft tall pots. They are a cool plant, but in the heat of summer they drink lots of water. I run drip irrigation to all of my plants so I don't have to mess with watering anything. I leave for a week, come home and everything still looks awesome.

So in the span of 2 years sd went from planting healthy garden plants to crushing fast food and grossing clams out.
hmmmmm

I'm definitely going to repot the hibiscus, had already used all my large pots when my brother dropped it off.
What did you do with it during the winter? I just plan on moving it next to a window in the garage.

ben ji, you probably attended 2nd grade at an american elementary school, so you already know this, but there's a certain type of aquatic animal that's traditionally used as fertilizer. might be the solution to your problem.

hummingbirds love hibiscus plants :D
dobber gave good advice. they basically require damp soil to flourish. winterize in garage, and be on the lookout for aphids. ben ji lil bro brought you a nice haul, aside from the petunias. P U

I have overwintered them in the garage a couple of years. Don't leave the garage door open. Even if they drop most of their leaves, they will come back in the spring. It kind of became a pain in the ass, so I just started tossing them in the fall and then bought new ones for $20 in the spring. You can usually find the trees on sale somewhere for about that much. The sd approach was much easier.
-
Hibiscus pro here guys. I always use a large pot and had one I kept alive for several years by bringing inside and setting in front of a window. Kept it watered and fed and it would bloom pretty much yr round.
Also, they do love their water, as Dobbs pointed out, but they are also resilient in that if you do leave for a week and don't have Dobbs kick ass irrigation set up, they will look super shitty. However, you can just water them well for the next week and they will be right back to looking like nothing bad ever happened to them.
Lately, we have stopped bringing them in during the winter. A couple years ago, we didn't just bring in the plant, we brought in a bunch of ants that decided during the summer the pot was a cozy place to make a super-planet-earth-destroying-sized-monster-nest that took a strong Schendel effort to get rid of.
I really like Hibiscus and have been getting Hula Girl Hibiscus the last several times we buy them. Yup, getting a border around the flower beds(Stone of some sort) and fixing the lawn are up next. Will see how the lawn looks in a couple of weeks but I may just till up half the backyard and plant new grass.

Kinda thinking I might get a rain barrel at some point this summer depending on how high my water bill gets.

don't water your grass (not sure if you planned to or not) it will go dormant and come back in the fall, but all those plants you have might take some serious watering (plus I think dogs need water to survive)

Guize, I have a flower problem...Like my brother will just drop stuff off and I'm running out of places to plant everything. In the past couple of weeks I planted some perrenials and annuals along a non street side of my house and put some in the corner of my back yard.
My brother has about 10 flats of this type flower(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F0.tqn.com%2Fd%2Fflowers%2F1%2FG%2F0%2F0%2F-%2F-%2FIMG_3239.JPG&hash=0397dfb41168cc0c5f44a6b0c75e79d40831800b) that he wanted to shape as a powercat and plant in my front lawn....I nixed that Idea.
Currently working on making/buying some window flower boxes, hope to have them planted and mounted over the weekend.

Should have gone with the powercat with green grass in the voids. I would have been super jealy.

Most the greenhouses are pretty much out of spring flower stuff so you can kick the flower problem but if he starts bringing over shrubs and stuff you might need to seek help

So about a week ago I saw 2 mice running around in my garden and VOWED I would eliminate this pest problem before they reached inside my house.
I saw 1 mouse run into a hole right underneath some panzy's and decided to wreck havoc on his life by flooding the crap out of his little home. Stuck a hose down there and cranked the water to full blast for about 10 minutes, really showed him who is boss.
I also bought a 4pack of mousetraps and have been DOING WORK on my mouse population. Originally I was putting cheese on the trap because thats what cartoons have taught me to do, unfortunatley mice are really good at getting cheese off without triggering the trap so I switched to peanut butter. Have crushed the spines of THREE different mice after switching to Peanut butter.
I even ended up in hand to hand combat with 1 mouse chasing it around my shed with a shovel but the focker got away...Cant wait till his lil smart ass gets hungry and decides to have some peanut butter with a nice side of COLD STEEL.
-
Side note-
While searching for evidence of mice I found a decent sized garter snake in a brush pile behind my shed. Decided to let him live so he can help me out.
-
:surprised:
-
I could rid all of KC of mice with one chunk of milkyway bar and one mouse trap in one weekend.
Seriously. They can't resist it. You can kill all day on one chunk and shake the mice off and just put the trap back without switching out the chunk.
-
Maybe that should be in the studd boss thing thread?
-
what species of mouse, ben ji?
if they are outside, not in your house, why do you want to kill them?

Definitely going to try this out as the peanut butter gets stolen about half the time.

Just your generic field mouse. Looked like this

I bought my gpa's house and it had mice living in the basement when he was all old and stuff, want to kill them all before they try and recolonize the basement.

well, it's not that. that mouse lives in europe, not in your yard. you either have native mice (deer mice, white-footed mice, harvest mice) or house mice.
there are more mice in the world and living all around you than you can possible kill, so i'd focus more on keeping your house sealed and/or unattractive to mice. if you didn't already have mice in your house last winter, your house probably already is sealed and/or unattractive to mice.
house mice would be the most aggressive colonizers of your house, followed by deer mice. white-footed and harvest mice, you'd pretty much have to invite them in, they aren't going to be terribly interested in the idea on their own.
-
hammer a big piece of board over any tom and jerry style mouse holes you see
-
Yeah, i just googled field mouse and that picture looked like the one's I had been catching.
-
what's the difference between a mouse and a rat? just size?
-
Type doesn't matter. They all love milkyway and they all die in the trap.

So I found an injured chipmunk on my driveway this weekend, appears to have a broken leg and may or may not be caused by my mousetraps...
Mousetraps were in backyard and I found the guy in the front so who knows.
He is currently chilling in a tub and gorging himself on strawberrys and grapes.

That chipmunk is mumped, ben ji. The best thing you can do at this point is to find a snake or a bird of prey to feed it to. That way, it at least dies for some purpose.

no, give it more strawberrys. as many as he wants.

Get him one of those carts with wheels that attach to a harness that you see dogs without back legs using. He can then cart his ass around until healed.

Well the fish aren't biting yet so I have a question.
WHO IS READY TO GROW SOME PLANTS?!?! HUH?!! LETS DO THIS!
Lil bro dropped off the first flower delivery of the year earlier this week, still a little cold outside to plant them so I'm keeping them in the garage for now. (https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F03%2F21%2Fqe5ezyga.jpg&hash=fd06fbd137b00216bd45da3a54a7fbf96dcad6d0)
I also got bored the other day and built an elevated garden bed to grow some yummy edible greens. I have absolutely ZERO aptitude for building things so I watched a youtube video then headed off to Home Depot to buy some wood and screws, total cost was under $20. I felt like a real MANLY man when I finished(except that I gave up for about 2 hours when I couldnt figure out the torque setting on the drill). I added the chicken wire on the outside to keep lady from eating all my delicious greens while I'm not looking.

Project for the afternoon is to fill that sucker with DIRT!
What should I grow in my garden bed?!? I'm not a big fan of tomatoes but I'm definitely going to grow bushels of kale and green beans. Feel free to post suggestions of what I should grow and if I agree I will post updates throughout the summer and it will be like we are gardening together!

hi ben ji
I am buying a house soon and in my yard i will have subsistence garden of borderline doomsday prep proportions
I want to grow blueberries so I have been saving my coffee grounds at work in a bucket to add to the soil to make it more acidic.
-
Benji, put that raised bed where you want it, then turn the soild below it before filling it with black dirt. Then turn it again once the black dirt is int it. The 3.5" of the 2x4 on its side isn't deep enough for a bunch of plants eventual roots. Turning the first time loosens the grass and earth below. The second turn mixes the black dirt to the lower depth.
-
Going to plant some jalapenos, habenero, mint(dark and stormy binges), basil, and green onion this spring.

Great tip cns.
Plant some yellow squash, zucchini, green and red peppers they go great on the grill or in salads! You might be able to get some cool season lettuce or broccoli going pretty soon! Double crop that SOB!

Just got done doing this!
First I turned over the soil.
Then I added some compost from the fall and turned it over again.
Last step was adding a top layer of last years compost that was basically dirt. I didn't have enough to completely fill it in so ill buy a couple bags of dirt at the store.
Heading to the store now to grab some spinach/lettuce/kale seeds to get them in the ground!
Go cats!

"Look at you"

Yeah, decided to nix the seed idea and buy some that had already sprouted.

anyone heard of/ tried aquaponic gardening? You grow fish and plants at the same time with no soil. Basic set up looks something like this.
The fish waste is pumped up to the grow bed and used as fertilizer for the plants who clean and filter the water and return it back to the fish holding tank. I don't really have any interest in eating the fish but it requires alot less water and grows plants 2-3X faster if done right.
-
I've read about them and I think some restaurant in KC has something like that in their basement. Maybe the reiger hotel?

Hmm didn't know about that, the reiger is VERY emaw.
-
There is a big farm that used to be a dairy farm near my old house that told all the cows to GTFOOTF's then filled the barns with tanks and raise talapia then use the waste water to grow basil and other herbs that they sell in KC pricechoppers as live basil. Seems like it would be very indepth to set up and maintain for some veggies on the small scale.

I know someone that did this. It works amazingly well! Everything grows much faster, you are able to control everything about it. No worries about pesticides, or fertilizers, since the fish take care of that part. The great part is once the fish reach a certain size you can eat them too. It's great circle of life!

I've grown raspberries, do you want to grow raspberries?
Here's another great guide on growing blueberries from our purple Wildcats university (click the "Growing blueberries in Kansas" link and it will give you a pdf of a power point)

Looks like you guys may be facing a uphill battle and may not even get berries for a couple years! :surprised:
-
Yeah, not looking to wait a entire year before getting berries.
Will raspberries produce in the first year?
-
what if i get like 2 year old pubescent plantlings?
-
Yeah, not looking to wait a entire year before getting berries.
Will raspberries produce in the first year?
Both raspberries and blueberries can/will produce berries in the first year, but for the health/longevity of the plant you are suppose to prune them so all their energy will go towards creating a strong root and stem structure. I have had success with raspberries though, they are a little more suited for Kansas' climate and soil. Raspberries spread too, so you can start off with 1 plant and have a nice little patch after a little while
-
I am also jazzed about asparagus, which also takes 2 years.
do you have asparagus secrets?
-
what if i get like 2 year old pubescent plantlings?
You could do that, it will be more expensive to buy a more mature plant and transplanting it will still be a shock to its system, so I'm not sure how it would react. Basically you guys should get some stuff in the ground and reap the benefits next year.
-

Asparagus is crazy. Basically you harvest it for a month or two in April-June ish every 2 to 3 days. Like you cut off a stalk and then 2 days later an almost identical stalk will be growing in its place. If you don't harvest them that often they go to seed. So after you harvest it for a couple months you let it go to seed, basically it gets like 6 foot tall and looks like a bush. Then I think you wait awhile and chop that down, then the next spring, boom more asparagus! Rinse and repeat.
I don't know anything about starting an asparagus planting though

I heard a gardening thing on the radio on asparagus. They said the way to do it is to buy two yr old root ball things and basically cut a v groove, stretch the roots out in the groove, and cover them. Made it sound like you could get this year growth on them. Also said that asparagus can grow a foot a day and in good climates and can be harvested up to twice a day in perfect conditions.

Man I believe that, occasionally if it rained we had to harvest back 2 back days, but I bet in Kansas with the temperature and lack of moisture it wouldn't grow that fast, and really it's kind of a pain in the ass to have to cut it every day anyway.

My first year of gardening i grew some asparagus from seed, i've still never really got a good harvest from that spot... the bush looks more like what you would think a perennial plant should look like (more shoots, clustered, but overall smaller/thinner) so if you have a corner of your yard you traditionally put more ornamental-type plants, you could put down some asparagus seed. It comes back every year, and is actually a very pretty bush once you let it go to seed. After the first year, since i still wasn't expecting much of a harvest, i put down a whole row of 2 year roots. They aren't that expensive and they work great. You definitely get harvest-able shoots the first spring that you actually need to cut away a few times. I let mine go direct to seed and each root is now more inclined to send up one thick shoot that grows like a monster, whereas i'd prefer 2-3 shoots per root system for better ease of harvest.
Heres a question for you greenThumbKats: peppers? 3 seasons ago i did my first pepper bush, habaneros. Planted one bush but never got many chilis off of it. The next season i planted 3 PLUS a ghost chili pepper bush... not realizing my mistake the previous year, i ended up with 2lbs of habaneros (the bush by its self the year before had to self pollinate and thus had low yields) Which was nice, they were some beautiful fruits, but i challenge anyone to find a way to quickly and effectively use that much habaneros... throw 2 in a pot of chili to kick it up to a 5. They're just too hot to be practical for any sort of large yield operation (i think a minimum configuration of 2 plants would be ideal, but you're still going to end up with a bunch) The ghost chilis probably had the same problem as the habaneros the year before, they were lonesome. i think i only got 5 peppers off of it. On top of that, they never rippened...they froze on the vine in the fall still green, don't know what would have helped them along. So last year i planted 3 Serrano bushes, thinking these would be less hot and more versitile. My issue with them was that i saw my 3 bushes produce hundreds of smallish, not hot, peppers. Harvesting was a pain, the final product didn't have the kick i craved, and Serranos have a thick waxy skin that limited their use (you either need to skin each one: tedious or just get used to picking the skins out of your teeth) I guess i could give it another go and try pruning more religiously (i'm not a pruner, but i feel like i should be) or try another pepper. Any suggestions? I'd like something that grows a larger fruit, but still has some kick to it.
-
I would assume you could just compost all you don't use or give them to a soup kitchen/church outreach or something?

I did give away a bunch of them, but F that, i aint running no charity.

-I would throw some pine straw, compost, or dead leaves on top of that soil so you don't lose moisture so quickly and so you don't have to weed. Don't use wood mulch--the other stuff I mentioned will slow feed your plants.
-You can plant more! Plant some peas, beans, or cukes to run along that chicken wire. Beans and peas are super easy to start from seed, cukes would probably need starters. Can you imagine pickling your own cukes and eating them with Lady while you catch dinner?
-You can sow some more spinach or lettuce seeds around the ones you already have--that way you can eat lettuce all spring, rather than just getting one crop out of it. Plus, neither of those plants need as much space as you're giving them right now.
-I'm also a little worried about you growing so many cool-weather plants that will be ready to eat right when the weather gets hot. Is that broccoli going to bear anything, or will it go straight to flower? () I might start some peppers in a pot right now, that way it gets nice and big before the summer--plus, if the broccoli is fine, you can keep the pepper in a pot and bring it inside for the winter and perennialize it!

Yes, definitely planning on adding on to it. I'm off the next couple of days and will plant some green beans and snap pea's along the chicken wire. I read online that you can plant climbing beans in pots and use a tomato cage as the growth structure so I might try that as well.
I was under the assumption that I could continuously pick leaves off the Kale/spinach/lettuce and they would keep growing back until it gets super hot out. Is this incorrect?
The empty part of the garden is reserved for pepper(green and jalepno) plants that I will probably plant soon. My lil bro works at the growhouse for a nursery and brings home flats of extra plants that aren't up to "retail" grade. I usually dont get these until mid june but when I do get them I will replace all the "cool weather" crops with cucumbers/peppers/whatever shows up.

Guyz, my bean/pea plants have sprouted and im super pumped.
Also the perennials I planted last year are looking like complete studs.

Yeah, decided to nix the seed idea and buy some that had already sprouted.
First row is kale, second row is spinach, third row is lettuce and 4/5th row is broccoli.

My actual garden is looking like a boss hog.
Ive been eating spinach and green leaf lettuce salads for the past month (made a HUGE bowl for mothers day) and still have plenty left.
The big leafs you see in the middle is broccoli, just starting to crown now.
I have some green beans and sugar snap pea's that just sprouted along the edges. Im hoping the chicken wire will be enough structure for them to climb on. Also have some growing in those pots along the outside.

the yard and some of the shrubs are on sprinklers, the tomatoes aren't. they were pretty stressed and wilted, but i think they'll recover ok. might lose some baby tomatoes on one of the plants.

i'm definitely potting my mint this year after basically letting it take over a few hundred sqft last year :sdeek:
I bet your yard smelled amazing after you mowed it
tough luck having some plant that is the most awesome and amazing plant in the world that smells and tastes great taking over your yard and crowding out all your useless and shitty plant-smelling plants. hopefully everyone learns from this horror story.
Not sure how but some mint plants started growing on the side of my house. I pulled up around half but left some so I could make some tasty mojito's and use them in other cooking dishes.
Sometimes when I'm out working in the yard I will pull a couple leaves off and chew them :Carl:.

This is not a laughing matter, but all is forgiven. My plants have made a complete recovery and doing well. The tomatos are actually setting on better than my dad's. :Woot:

to get them to flower? i've never noticed that they needed encouragement, but i'd probably do something weird like give them some low n fertilizer instead of hitting them, if i felt they needed it.

i've heard that that's a wives tale. like the energy expended in growing the suckers is replaced and more by the energy gained from the additional leaf mass. :dunno: they pretty much produce shitloads no matter what you do, though. super easy plant.
but i'd maybe/prolly do it late in the year if i thought the new growth wouldn't have time to produce anything before cold weather.

yes. you can also just harvest it, package it in bunches and sell it over and over to the same people. don't get greedy, sell it cheap and people will be unable to resist.
work a deal to sell on consignment with someone already there. you don't want to have to sit around the market all day yourself.

that's very often the only way to get basil at the dillons i shop at (:curse:)

what in the world? basil (normal italian/sweet type basil) can't survive freezing temps. it's an annual plant where cns lives.

Giant radishes like super mario world in this bitch

Hey guys. Hey. Guys.
I have two watermelons growing on my vine. They're so cute and li'l right now but they're about to take off, I can tell. One's almost the size of a baseball! I am basically guarding them 24/7 from my children/neighbors/punk kids in the neighborhood who probably want nothing more than to steal Old Man WonderMeal's watermelons.
Also going gangbusters (or at least doing okay): okra, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, citrus trees (!), basil, mint, blueberries, and blackberries. Doing less well, either because of age or because they didn't weather my vacation very well: butternuts, poblano/bell peppers, figs, pomegranates.
Flowers that are awesome right now include: hydrangeas x1000, gardenias, impatiens, bougainvillea, mandevilla, hibiscus, yesterday-today-tomorrow (the most EMAW of shrubs, google it), begonias.
I basically feel about gardening like Ben Ji feels about fishing. Gotta have it.
-
grandpaMH can barely walk or see, but he is some kind of gardening sensation. Tomatoes, cabbage, squash, all sorts of stuff just growing like gangbusters. I don't even know how he physically got everything in the ground. Crown jewel of Alta Vista.
-
My Snap Peas were doing just great for the first 2 months but most of them have shriveled up and died :frown:.
I've had some planted in pots around the fence and others in my garden along the chicken wire, same deal with both. I even made sure to give them plenty of water.
Its just like they got to a certain length and said, F it, I'm out.
-
My peas died in infancy. Same with onions, spinach, and green onions. Tomatoes are still trucking and radishes are going gangbusters.

It could be that they were over-fertilized, but I'm guessing that it's because it got too hot. Snap peas are more of a Fall/Spring or even Winter crop depending on where you live, and can be pretty fragile in Kansas summers.
What I'm trying to say is CF3's "how can I beat the heat???" thread is incredibly relevant for snap peas. Ts and Peas, Ben Ji.

Confirmed, this is why gardening is a total waste of time, unless you're planting a beautiful Crepe Myrtle tree, of course.

Dug about a 2 inch trench for the stones(purchased at Wal-Mart for 1.58 each) and layed some sand to even it out.
The flowers were at ground level before so I added a couple inches of soil from my compost pile then put some mulch (purchased at Wal-Mart for 2.88 a bag) on top.
The perennials were just cut back so hopefully it will be "popping" again come fall.
I have an area on the other side of the yard that I plan on doing the same thing later in the fall.

Pretty happy with just how well these are all producing! Any tips/tricks/advice is more than welcome.
I'm not sure you need any tips for right now--those things look like they're producing well. If you want, you can always add a layer of compost to the top, an inch or so. This will slow-feed the plants for the rest of the season.
At the end of the season, you can try to perennialize your peppers by digging up some of your favorites and putting them in a bright window in your house or under some grow-lights in the garage. You might get a few peppers over the course of the winter, and then you can put them out after the last freeze to get more peppers, faster. You can either leave them in the pot to save garden space or you can replant them into the ground. You can easily get a pepper plant to live 5+ years, which will have you an Ms. cDubya eating all kinds of salsa.
Here's an article about how to do it: http://www.gardensalive.com/article.asp?ai=835 (http://www.gardensalive.com/article.asp?ai=835). I'm not sure I would go to all the trouble in the article, but it's a good start.
squirrels took my first round of tomatoes. round two coming in now. I will murder some squirrels if I don't get any.
Ts and Ps, Cire. You can do a few things to keep the squirrels away from your delicious blue-ribbon tomatoes:
-Buy a plastic hawk/falcon (~$15 from Amazon)
-Buy a bottle of coyote urine and spread it around the edge of your garden ($15 for 8 oz at Home Depot)
-Get a motion-activated sprinkler (~$50 at Amazon--especially good for cats and dogs)
-Hang red glass Christmas ornaments from your tomato plants (mainly for birds, tho)
Go 'Cats, ftb.

Don't bring your ass back in here until you have pics of your bhut jolokia to display.
Couldn't get any this year. Went to half a dozen local greenhouses and none had them in stock. Didn't want to go online for them. You just wait til next yer, though!
Thanks, WM!
And thanks for the compliments guys. Already made one batch of salsa, but the tomatoes are just now starting to turn, so it's about to be game on!
-
You ever perennialize those pepps, @cDubya?
Put in a lot of work today, guys. Had some raised beds put in a few weeks ago (straight steve dave-ing it) and planted the following this weekend:
-Fig tree
-Three types of citrus
-Pomegranate tree
-Spinach
-Mustard Greens
-Romaine
-Bell peppers
-Serrano Peppers
-Tomatoes
-Beans (pole)
-Kale
-Assorted pretty flowers
Living that Zone 8+ life is pretty great.
Lime tree has not adjusted well to the transplanting, hoping it pulls through. Also planted some blueberries recently.
Any of you NorthernCats starting seeds indoors? Planning any big garden expansions for the Spring?
-
How hard is it to plant lettuce/kale/broccoli/spinach from seed? Last year I just bought some small plants but i feel like i need to start them from seed to be a real white Midwesterner.
Should I get the seeds to sprout indoors? I did this with some beans in wet paper towels last year and it worked kind of good.
Do I just put the seeds in little cups of dirt by the window until they sprout?
What about just planting them in my raised garden bed? If this is the correct answer when should I start them?
-
Start with the paper towels, cheese cloth etc. Transfer to cups and grow until it's warm enough

The greens you should definitely sow directly outdoors in your raised bed. They grow super fast and make you feel like a manly man in just a couple of weeks (manly man thread crosspost). Herbs can also be grown from seed easily. Not sure about the broccoli, I've never tried it from seed.

one think i will not do is plant heirloom tomatoes. only genetically engineered impervious resilient science tomatoes. last year i had one science tomato that was gangbusters and one heirloom tomato that was a huge waste of time because it all got eaten by bugs instantly.
-
i did ok with heirloom tomatoes in containers. i think maybe they aren't so good at living in the ground.

Took advantage of the great weather yesterday to get the garden started. Last year I bought mini tini plants of Kale/Spinach/Lettuce/Broccoli but it was stupid expensive, like $25 bucks. This year I am trying to go Au Natural and sprout it from seeds.
I turned over my Elevated garden bed and added a 2 inch layers of miracle grow soil on top. To plant the seeds I basically just dug a 1 inch deep trench across and sprinkled seeds(Kale and Spinach) throughout then covered and watered it real good. Assuming everything sprouts I'll thin out some of the seedlings to keep everything spaced out.

Planning on planting some summer crops on the side that hasnt been prepped yet.
I also prepped the Landscape Gardens for spring by removing all the leaves/dead material and watering the crap out of all the perennials. I was super pumped to see some bulbs I planted last fall starting to shoot up, felt like a real manly man.
-
you should tent that with some clear plastic or something. I mean, our average last freeze is something like the middle of April.

You can start kale/spinach/lettuce etc before the last freeze. Its plants like tomatoes/peppers/beans etc that you plant after the last freeze.

i will plant some tomato plants tomorrow.

Went to the local Wallys to get my 2015 State of Kansas Fishing License and decided to check out the garden center.
Ended up buying some strawberry roots because strawberry's are awesome and it was like $3.
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F15%2F03%2F17%2F18c7bcb5ae32403b50c763140690b2ed.jpg&hash=7ffa5a9b939e5067ed0b4495c87246a503c73012)
The package came with 10 different "Roots" all bundled up in a ball with "sprouts" coming out of the roots. Soaked them in water for an hour then separated them into their individual roots.
I planted 3 in the back corner of my yard that gets the most sun and put the rest in pots to give away or replant later.

ben ji--glad to hear about the greens you put in. I'm sure the seeds will work out great. I'm also happy to hear you're trying strawberries. Mama WM grew a bunch of them growing up, and we'd pick them and make strawberry pie.
I put in a lot of work this weekend. Planted the following:
-Tomatoes (four varieties)
-Marigolds (to assist w/ pest control for tomatoes)
-Assorted herbs (dill/basil/parsley/mint)
-Jalapenos
-Bok choy
-More lettuce
-Camellias (seafoam and royal velvet)
-Brunfelsia (the most EMAW of plants--flowers that change from white to lavendar to purple)
-Clematis (purple)
These new friends join those already in progress:
-Mustard greens (tons)
-Green onions
-Spinach (tons)
-Romaine
-Pole beans
-Kale (tons)
-Blueberries
-Gladiolus
-Ranunculus
-Assorted hydrangeas/gardenias
And in the best news yet, my fruit trees are starting to blossom and have flowered like never before. I was worried that the transplant and somewhat late fertilizing would mean a weak crop this year, but so far things look very promising. I mean, there are just flowers everywhere. Pretty pumped about it. Grass looks nice and lush after a couple of nice rains, too.

What if my backyard is crawling with garter snakes and an adorable dog?
Also I saw a tiny baby garter snake in my front garden area yesterday. I was watering my plants and as I worked my way down this lil guy would stay keep moving to stay out of the way of the water. Eventually he squirmed underneath the wood mulch to gobble up some rolly pollys.

can't hurt. but i think they mostly eat them at like 5 in the morning or some crap. are you going to make lady sleep in the garden?

jalapenos are pretty simple. actually never had a problem the last five years of growing any kind of peppers.

Yeah, in my limited experience, you can put peppers directly in the hottest part of the yard where nothing else likes to be. then mostly ignore it and it will do well.

So I had this brilliant idea to plant some Kale in a raised bed that was at the house I just bought last November. I planted two packs, we eat the crap out of Kale chips! Now I'm reading it needs to be 18 inches apart. I have 200 little plants coming up, this will take up my enitre garden! I've already got beets, radishes, carrots, lettuce, and sugar peas in the garden. I planed for a row of Kale, not a whole garden of it! Am I just screwed any ideas?.?

I hadn't thought about just thinning the strong. I just got done taking care of the leaves around the house. I can easily put a bed on the south side and put them in there, problem with thinning where they are is that there isn't much space. I just started them there thinking the raised beds warmer, I think I read that somewhere...

My gma passed away over 20 years ago but when she was alive she had a big row of tulips and irises along the back fence line.
By the time i bought my gpas house a couple years ago this was pretty over grown so i replanted all the bulbs in a different location....well i thought i did.
This year one random tulip plant popped up and it made me think of my gma :-)

When seeds start sprouting is my favorite time of gardening--even moreso than harvesting. There's just so much possibility!
Can someone tell me a plant that I can plant in a pot that would repel spiders?
I don't know of any plants that repel spiders, but I bet you could help your problem by attracting insectivorous birds to your yard. Blackbirds, blue jays, crows, and sparrows all eat spiders. Put up a feeder with the proper food and some fresh water and I bet your spiders will be gone.
This year one random tulip plant popped up and it made me think of my gma :-)
That's awesome, ben ji!
One of my favorite things to do in my garden is to plant flowers in memory/honor of people. Hydrangeas, roses, figs, gardenias, and peonies all honor different family members in the WM clan. It's even cooler if you can root a plant from the person's yard! (Or in your case, plant the same bulbs!) I have some hydrangeas rooted from Gma WM's favorite bush that I've been taking care of for several years, just waiting for their forever home.

My lettuce and Rosemary has went nuts. Carrots popping up and strawberries getting close

I installed a 4 x 4 starter raised bed this week. Tomorrow we're planting pepper, cilantro, strawberry, spinach, and lettuce. Also going to plant three different types of tomato plants and basil in the flower beds next to our house. I'm also replacing the shrubs in front of our house. I'm uncovering a lot of earthworms as I dig up the old. Filling up the raised bed with those.

Can you find hedge apples out there? If so, lay them around your porch and any other area you don't want pesky insects. Works like a charm, and they last for ages.

So I've got a nice little 4x4 compost area. I've been filling with table fruits and veggies, grass clippings and leaves, everything that's supposed to be in there. I've been kinda turning it, but really need to mix it up good, it wasn't steaming like its supposed to. I just went out and dug down to the middle and it was a steamy hot mess! Nice and earthy looking! Never thought I would get so pumped to see a giant pile of compost steam!

Garden update!
Last year I planted some beans in pots then set them next to the fence to climb. They did awesome until about my middle of june when all of them shriveled up and died. I'm guessing the pots couldn't hold enough moisture for them so I decided to sow them directly into the ground this year.
I made a trench along the fence line then filled it up with dirt from my compost pile, planted the pre sprouted seeds then topped it off with some miracle grow potting soil. Hoping for some better luck this year.

Yep. Don't cut the leaves this summer. Leave them so they can get sun. Buy, yeah, tulips, more like two days.

Did I mention that I just planted some ASPARAGUS PLANTS TODAY?!?!? (Mary Washington variety)
I bought a 5 pack of roots at home depot as an impulse buy. I read a couple articles online and made a new "Asparagus Bed" and planted them up. Bad news is I am going to have to wait like 2 years before I get sweet succulent asparagus shoots on the reg.

how much kale do you grow
-
I planted two packs of Kale, WAY WAY to much, I planned on thinning it out, and ended up having to. I left what I didn't have space for though and it's actually flourishing pretty good. I'm planning on picking it when it gets big enough for salads, in about a week or so. Then letting the stuff I thinned out grow to the larger size.
What type of beans did you plant? I had some green beans I was going to put into a pot, but if it's going to do the same, I may find another location...

I alternated sugar snap peas and string beans along the fence line, put them down every foot or so. Last year both bean varieties grew like crazy for a month or 2 but withered and died once it started to get hot.
In regards to Kale....I planted some last year and it got freaking huge, like inch/2 inch wide stalk at the base. In the fall I ripped out all the stalks and threw them in my compost pile...but apparently I missed some roots. When I was turning over my garden last spring I noticed a kale root was sprouting so I let it be and sure enough I'm getting some tiny kale leafs coming off it.
I grew 4 Kale plants last year and that was plenty, when they get huge in late summer(3/4 ft tall) they have tons of leaves you can harvest. Once the stalk is established you can harvest the leaf's and new ones will grow right back. The leaf's are not as delicious as the late spring leaf's but they are still tasty.

And stick it out with the strawberries, the first year is rough but it gets easier after that.

Hey Ben ji old pal, since we're friends i thought i'd give you a heads up that those wooden garden partitions are basically termite factories. You need to get stone in there ASAP!
And stick it out with the strawberries, the first year is rough but it gets easier after that.
Yup. My little bro installed those when we were thinking about selling the house a couple years ago and they are already un even and tearing apart.
I will probably wait until fall when they discount the crap out of landscaping rocks then replace them.

When i bought my house, the lady who owned it before kept the place very well manicured and had those beams everywhere. My buddies all told me to get rid of them because they are termite condominiums but i kinda brushed it off with a "Eh, they look pretty new, i bet they're fine"
Well, one day, i was trying to maneuver a trailer up my drive and dropped a tire right on one of the beams, splitting it in two. The horror therein was hard to describe but the interior of the beam resembled swiss cheese. The same day i pulled all of it up to find that there must have been hundreds of termites living in all of them :Yuck: :Yuck: :Yuck: :sdeek: :Yuck: :Yuck: :Yuck:
Needless to say i burned them all with fire.

Our house had some when we moved in. We live in woods. Anyway, got them treated and the guy said if you live near woods in NE KS, you will always be near them. Only need to set up a barrier around the house. Sucks though, because he recommends against using mulch. We have a bunch of lava rock, that I despise.
Anyway, long story, but this last weekend we found what looked like a long bald caterpillar. About as big around as my index finger and about 4" long. My kid ID'ed it as a termite queen. Google it and sure enough. Stuff of nightmares.
-
pro tip- don't google termite queen

people pay thousands to get at some idiot queen out wandering around?

Puni, that is really exciting. And frankly, based on your posts in the lunch thread, very surprising. I'm rooting especially hard or your cantaloupe, as I've never had much luck with them.
I brought in my first round of veggies to share with co-workers this week, which was a big hit. Also I have an absolute ton of cute Tiny Li'l Baby Limes (TLBL) and TLBFigs on my trees right now. It's the first year either tree has produced, and they are both exploding.
Last weekend I took out most of the greens in the garden (kale, spinach, mustards, lettuce) and replaced them with more heat-tolerant plants (limas, peas, collards, okra, sunflowers, more 'maters). It's really astonishing how fast beans grow.

I bought a hanging basket for my backyard and a couple of plants for my front porch a few nights ago. That's the extent of my gardening abilities.

i have about 8000 small green tomatoes on the vine, i may have overplanted.
the mints came back strong from the earwigs, but are now being torn apart by these green caterpillars that show up every year to tear them apart. the strawberries are about done. insects got at least three for every one i got. oregano and rosemary everywhere. dried a little and threw away about 20x as much as i dried. the basil is being a little slow for how hot it is. also trying to flower early.

oh, hey dobber. since you're here, i've got a question for you. you know how on the bottle of an imidacloprid bottle it says to only use once a year on citrus trees? that's just some bullshit that doesn't apply if you want to use it two or three times a year, correct? and still be able to eat the fruit, i mean.

use the rate on the label as a soil drench and make only one application per year. The foliar sprays will not last as long.

Who is ready for a #GARDEN-HACK?!
You know that pollen stuff that falls off tree's this time of year?
It looks like this and piles up EVERYWHERE, especially on sidewalks and driveways.

Well this stuff makes excellent mulch/cover for your garden. I prefer it to wood mulch because it breaks down by the end of summer and you dont get random wood chips in your soil.

If you buy the one with the hose end sprayer on the top, buy a pair of chemical resistant gloves. You probably won't get any actual product on you, but water always leaks out of that connect. The advantage is that once you turn the water on and then start spraying the chemical, it will only take you about 20 seconds to spray almost everything that you want to spray. Then you can go back and spray again in a week or two, depending on insect pressure and re treatment intervals WHICH ARE LISTED ON THE LABEL!

i have three tomatoes that are pretty much ready to harvest. i'm going to wait and harvest them on friday or saturday.
also, there is a rat that is eating bites out of the green tomatoes in the back of the patch. i have enough tomatoes to share, but i'm still going to try and kill it.

my cucumber, zuke, bhut jolokia, and one tomato plants have been ravaged by the storms and are pitiful.
the tomato plant was totally snapped off at the root, but i buried the stem stump and it seems to be slowly coming back to life.
the zuke had all its leaves blasted off but is now popping out a blossom, so not sure how sustainable that is.
-
At my parents house yesterday, I had a bowl of homegrown strawberries from my mom's garden :lick:
-
that tomato will come back strong as ever. you'll just have a shorter harvest.
-
Alright guyz, some pests are absolutely destroying me garden and its driving me ragey. My food garden is in an elevated bed and has chicken wire around it and is doing fine, mainly its my ornamental gardens. I need gE's help to narrow down my list of suspects.
Suspects-
1. Squirrels - These suckers are everywhere just mocking me from the tree's.
2. Chipmunks- I see one of these suckers a couple times a week, very active in my hood.
3. Rabbits - Lady gets so jacked when she walks in the backyard and gets to chase one of these guys. Weirdly I see more chipmunks than rabbits in my yard.
CRIMES-
The pea's I planted along my fence line? About half got chewed down to the base.
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F06%2F04%2Fb1b45087d2147e6bb46c1a4532101469.jpg&hash=a31ee6ced9ebcb83e4cd49c4695b4ba2dda3285c)
I also had some awesome smaller flowers (no idea what the name was) and they were chewed ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE ROOTS, luckily they seem to be coming back.
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F06%2F04%2F8c687f454fe077b4fd7470232a6b8c9a.jpg&hash=8e89e7eedf1ba4522882d5e8d6964fb46b0888de)
The most annoying crime commited is the constant vandalism of my flower bed. Everyday I come home I will notice 2-3 of these "holes" where some sort of animal has been digging about 1-2 inches into the mulch in my flower bed. This has happened in some ornamental pots I have as well. Just absurd, these animals have no respect for a mans domain.
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F06%2F04%2F9c500427cfb0c4589a2e650b723855af.jpg&hash=96b75550c067c454f008b60f27a75448abf70dca)

So tell me gE, which animal is responsible for this damage?
-
Probably all of them. :dunno:
-
the holes are squirrel. the chewed plants could be any, but if they are behind secure chickenwire, then it is the squirrels or chipmunks.
-
the holes are squirrel. the chewed plants could be any, but if they are behind secure chickenwire, then it is the squirrels or chipmunks.
Thanks sys, figured the holes were squirrels but have never caught them in action. The chewed plants were not behind the chicken wire so I'm guessing rabbits?
And FYI I just mowed my lawn and stirred up a garter snake that slithered right in front of the mower. I stopped the mower, picked the garter snake up with a stick and moved it to my garden. :D
-
Squirrels are pretty great as long as they aren't messing with your house. One of the most adorbs things you can have in the yard.

veggies are cheap, you guys. The whole myth about produce being expensive is only the case if you buy it prepared. Like pre chopped salads. I mean, you are probably losing money growing them yourself if you monetize your frustration and water.

its not financial. It's about summoning life from the soil and then destroying and consuming that life.
-
Eat squirrel, then, I guess. :dunno:

Plus all the good bacteria you get from digging in soil

Time for everyone to post a garden update! Here's mine:
-Lime tree is going bananas. Looks great.
-Had a couple of figs off the fig tree. They were just okay. :frown:
-Bursting at the seams with tomatoes, but I only planted two varieties and they both taste kind of bad. :blindfold:
-Okra has taken off.
-Asparagus is in its first year, but I'm really happy with how much it has grown and am excited for next year. Same story for blueberries.
-I had cut sunflowers in my house basically every day for three weeks, but they're all gone now. It was great.
-Pepps on pepps on pepps on pepps on pepps on pepps
-I have a lot of green beans, but realized I don't really like picking them and they take up a lot of space. Will not plant again.
-
4 tomatoes and two jalapenos all effing summer. Effing rain.
-
Mine sucks ass
-
i'm kinda sick of tomatoes. i may have overplanted. plus one highly productive plant produces the worst tasting tomatoes in the entire world. i don't pick them anymore, but for some stupid reason i still water it. it has like 200 tomatoes hanging on it.
-
-Tomato plants (~20) coming along nicely
-Peppers seem to be stunted drastically from these huge storms and extensive rain
-cucumbers and squash, however, are LOVING the weather and flourishing
-potatoes were okay for a while, seem to be dying off. (Aphids!!!)
-herbs are all doing really well
Should be a huge variety of tomatoes for salsa/marinara/pizza sauce, however, not happy with the lack of pepper growth.
@Dobber - best way to (organically) kill all these Aphids on my potato leaves/stalks?!!
-
mint is still doing its thing. don't know if there's any other vegetation out there or not

Read the label. Not certain of the aphicides available in Garden Centers. Sorry I am not more help.
Don't spray when windy and do spray late in the evening or early in the morning. Bees are active during the day.

Do you break up the soil underneath the bed or do you just build the bed on the hard ground and then add fresh soil?

Yes, I broke up the soil underneath the bed then filled it in with dirt from my compost pile and turned it over again.

Squirrels were raiding my garden and eating all my cherry tomatoes before they turned red.
My dad brought a squirrel trap over then I baited it with an unripe tomatoe.
12 hrs later BOOM

Lady was going nuts, really wanted to earn her second confirmed kill but i drove it a mile away and let the squirrel go.

Rain the past few weeks has screwed up all my tomatoes and peppers, but man are the cukes and squash loving it. At least I'll have plenty of Sriracha pickles this year...

Favorite recipe for squash?
I've got some growing now but not sure how I'm going to eat them. Only Way I have prepared them in the past is to slice them up and sautee them with other veggies for a side dish.

@Dobber @WonderMeal - best way to (organically) kill all these Aphids on my potato leaves/stalks?!!
Whenever I have an organic gardening question, I always go to Mike McGrath's "Garden Answers A to Z" website. His weekly You Bet Your Garden podcast is a great resource, too.
http://www.gardensalive.com/category/you_bet_your_garden
(http://www.gardensalive.com/category/you_bet_your_garden)
Here's his answer on aphids:
Question. I transplanted a beautiful heirloom rosebush from my mother's garden to mine last year. Now it's FILLED with APHIDS!!!! I found a ladybug and put her on the bush, but she looked at me like, "now why did you do that?" Please help. Thanks,
---Beth in Emmaus, PA
Answer. Aphids are EASY! Cradle the infested part of the plant in one hand and blast the little rats off with a sharp, strong steam of water from one of those multiple-choice nozzles. It'll kill 80 to 90% of 'em outright, and the survivors will be too depressed to go on. Do this a couple of times and that Lady should be able to handle any stragglers.
-
aphids are not easy, at least not without chemicals. i guess maybe they're easy if you only have one plant, but eff mr. organic if he thinks it's easy to hand wash a couple hundred plants every other day.
-
@cDubya will you be planting a fall garden? im excited to try out some spinach and romaine varieties i got a while back

YES! Big Chemical is gaining strength!
Sorry, for the smart-assedness.
You are correct. They are not easy. Chemicals work very well and can be applied without harming a bee hive 50 ft away or whatever.
What if I told you that chemicals were used INSIDE THE HIVE?!?!? BY BEE KEEPERS!!!!!(maybe I already did tell you that?)

Dobber, did I tell you that ben ji's dad is an amateur bee keeper (Maybe I did already tell you that)? He does not use chemicals in his hives tho, just smoke, au natural.

cDubya only mentioned aphids on his potatoes. Unless he is a potato farmer with "a couple hundred plants," it seems like this would be a useful strategy for a home garden potato crop. It's worked for me and my citrus. :dunno:
Let me try a more sys-friendly strategy: what if cDubya nukes his potatoes with chemicals, a rat eats one of his poison plans, then a snake eats the poison rat and dies? I'm just thinking about the snakes, sys.
-
wondermeal, i have a confession. i don't really care about cdubya's problems. i just wanted to talk about my own experiences with aphids.

you probably have nastier things under your sink or in your garage. Somebody may have misused a chemical and if killed your bees. That sucks.
I will be very interested to know what actually happened. This is not typically what somebody would expect to see if a chemical was misused. I hope you figure out what happened and then kick the dumbass responsible for it right in the taint.
Gonna win 'em all!
-
@d(sl)obber - not sure specifically, but reading up on it I wouldn't doubt someone close by was using something like Sevin, maybe? This all happened in a span of ~48 hours. From what I've heard/read from other keepers you have to get a live, poisoned bee in the freezer and then send it off to be able to get a viable test done to find the cause. We may try to do that and send it to whoever does that kind of thing.
Gonna get in contact with the Dept. of Agriculture and go from there.

Decided to try and make sun dried tomatoes with some of my crop.
Did like 3 min of research online and it seems pretty simple. Cut the tomatoes in half, remove the seeds, bake in oven at 175 degrees for like 8 hrs.

The smoke is only to calm the bees when you enter the hive. It actually masks the pheromone warning that the bees give off when they want to warn the rest of the hive.

I've never had much luck with watermelons. I'm really cheering for you. Both pumpkins and wmelons are really heavy feeders.
Just cleared out the garden for the Fall/Winter crops. Also planted a lot more flowers for cutting for Mrs. WM. Citrus harvest coming soon! :excited:

Are there different varieties of ghosts? We put one in the garden for the first time this year and this is what mine look like, haven't cut one up to check the heat yet though... (did a quick Google before posting and now see there is a smooth fruit variety of the bhut jolokia, hoping that's what I really got)

Hey Ben ji old pal, since we're friends i thought i'd give you a heads up that those wooden garden partitions are basically termite factories. You need to get stone in there ASAP!
And stick it out with the strawberries, the first year is rough but it gets easier after that.
Took old HerrSontags advice and replaced the wooden ties last fall.

Teach me your ways.
I tried for the first time this year using the jiffy pods(Same setup as the top level of your pic) in late february. After they sprouted I moved them to a windowsill but they got super elongated and viney. Are grow lights the key?
I moved them all into larger containers and put them outside after a couple of weeks but then I made a boneheaded move. The forecast was all like, its only going to get down to 36 tonight and maybe some flurries, so I was like cool, not gonna freeze I'll leave them outside but then I woke up and the flurries had accumulated into slush inside of my containers and all of my tomatoes(Tomato?) and most of my pepper plants died.

I'm very sad that I can't see CDub's picture anymore. I've tried growlights in the past, but they became a no-go once all the li'l 'Meals started running around. I miss them and want to live vicariously through CDub.
Also ben ji, your garden looks great.
For those that are interested, I recommend googling "Hugelkultur." It's a method of growing plants used throughout northern Europe, and I tried one out this Spring with some wood that I had lying around. It allows you to put a lot of items in a small area. Check it out.
Here is a list of things I put in the ground for this Spring/Summer:
-Tomatoes (3 regular varieties, three cherry/grape varieties)
-Tomatillos (4)
-Bell pepps (3)
-Red bell pepps (2)
-Serrano pepps (2)
-Brussel sprouts (2)
-Mustard greens (lots)
-Collard greens (lots)
-Sunflowers (doi)
-Three types of squash (buttercup x2, delicata x2, acorn x2)
-Bradford Watermelons (2)
-Pumpkins (1)
-Green onions
-A few herbs and stuff
-Raspberry (1)
-Elderberry (1)
-A bunch of flowers to cut for Mrs. 'Meal (lots)
Stuff that is always in the ground and is doing well:
-Blueberries (5-6 bushes)
-Lemon (1)
-Lime (2)
-Clementine (1)
-Grapefruit (1)
-Fig (2)
-Avocado (1) :excited:
Stuff that is always in the ground and is doing less well:
-Pomegranate (won't flower yet :blank:)
-Asparagus (doing fine, needs one more year)
-Hydrangeas (doing fine but not as many flowers as I'd like )

Red- peppers
Green - Sugar Snap peas that grew to big for their trellis and fell over (good problem to have)
Pink - Tomatoe
Blue - Kale/mustard greens
Orange - Carrots
White - Guard dog lady
Lets take a look at the other side of the garden!

my mother used to make some really good pickles. they weren't canned or anything, so i think they were just partially cured. they stayed in the refrigerator until they were eaten.

First batch of the year, cukes from our garden. These are refrigerator pickles, so just mix up the brine, toss em in the fridge, and they're delicious 5 days later...

Give them 3-5 days to really soak it in. So much better after a little while "marinating"...

Regular small cucumbers will be fine no? I have never heard of a Persian cucumber only an English or regular.

I have no idea what kind of cucumbers I planted so I assume any type of cucumbers will do. My cucumbers were all sizes, if they were too long I just cut them down so they would fit in the jar.

Most impressive of which have been the Yellow Carolina Reapers. Hottest things I have ever tasted, without a doubt. So, naturally, we are making our own Reaper Hot sauce, and we threw in a few habaneros just for giggles. It's stupid hot, and I can't wait to see people's reactions to it this weekend...

Great bump CW.
I've been harvesting a ton a japs, stuffing them with cream cheese then wrapping them in bacon before throwing them in the freezer. Have made two batches so far and will probably make at least 2 more. I've tried a couple that have been frozen for a couple weeks and they tasted just as good as if they were fresh, just threw them on the grill.
Also with the cooler weather my strawberries have started producing again.

Benji, do you have a really sunny room or do you use a grow light for your seedlings? My seedlings the last 3 years have gotten really leggy, sickly looking and only about half of them made it to planting so i just gave up this year.
I even used a grow light, last year!

Thanks, guys. Hoping we have more than enough that make it to time to plant so we can pick out the strongest of each variety.
Ben Ji, we planted seeds Feb. 11th. Here's our setup, obviously the ones in cups have replaced most of the tray space.

I put mine in a front of a south facing window but have the same issue with the stringy/leggy roots. I use the little jif pods that come in a mini greenhouse and its works great for sprouting but after a couple of weeks they outgrow their pods and turn into a tangled mess.

Mostly all for us. We give a few here and there to family and friends. But its mostly just to support our salsa/marinara/pizza sauce habit. Oh, and hot sauce

My garden is entirely too big for 1 person so I give alot of my stuff away. Since cucumbers have been going crazy so I dropped off 2 jars of pickles at my parents last weekend and just made some more for myself. Also made some Tzatziki sauce this weekend   and pickled my first batch of Japs

I harvested my garlic a couple of weeks ago and its been drying in the garage since, will probably make some homemade pesto with before the heat mushes my Basil plant.

Looking good, ben ji!
Heat wave gas royally effed some of our stuff here. 90+ degrees with humidity to match. I'll post some updates as soon as I get tapatalk working. Damn photobucket nonsense really cramping my style...
-
heat doesn't mush basil, they adore the heat. keep the flowers cut back and the soil moist and it'll keep throwing delicious new leaves until it gets too cool at night.

Appreciate the tip, it was wilting from lack of water so I moved it to a partially shaded part of my yard and will water more.
Also why I got you here did I mention a bird made a nest INSIDE my garage? I used to leave the door from my garage to backyard open so Lady could roam around. I noticed a bird kept trying to fly in Everytime I opened the door but could never find the nest, eventually I found it but about 3 days after I moved it outside the eggs were gone ?

what am i doing that's making my basil taste bitter/medicinal? have like four diff varieties in a million pots and it's all kinda not tasty :(
-
lots of things like to eat eggs, ben ji.
it's probably mostly the varieties, tobias, but also if you've let it flower or it currently has flowers that will effect the flavor. if you aren't keeping it regularly cut back, try cutting it way back and harvest (for use) only the new leaves.
-
most just started flowering this week, and I've been pulling the heads but I'll try just trimming them way down and see if they become edible or will just remain ornamental, frown. they're beautiful and smell great.

Honestly, we just till some of our own compost in at planting, mound a bit on top after there is some good plant growth, and finally use Neptune's Harvest fish and seaweed fertilizer(diluted so as not to burn the plant), sprayed directly onto leaves once every couple weeks. And water EVERY day, unless we get good rain.

So who has started their seedlings already? Starting some seedlings this week (couple varieties of lettuce/kale/chard and then some tomatoes/peppers/cucumbers).
I am also going to attempt to grow some sweet corn for the first time this year. Planning to plant a 10 x 10 area, will plant the seeds in 4x4 rows a couple of weeks apart so i have fresh corn for at least a month. Any advice on the corn planting?

Probably starting seedlings this weekend. The few months off was nice, but now its back to work!
Sidenote: planted these bad boys last fall and surprisingly warm temps here and there have helped them rear their beautiful heads. So excited...

Fuji, Gala, and Honey Crisp
what rootstock? you should plant a lot more, but not just dessert apple varieties. i heard somewhere that in decent apple country you can expect about 5 tons of apples/acre in a good year.
I would have to look at the rootstock paper work. I really don't have room for many more and I only like desser apple varieties so no need to plant others. I realize these 3 are pretty similar but I like them. I don't expect to get any thing from these trees for at least 3 years they were bareroot and not very big.
How have your apple trees been doing? I really want to plant a single honeycrisp tree but I'm pretty sure you need to plant a couple next to each other for pollenization or something.

growing roma and beefsteak from seed along with the following types of chiles:
serrano
numex 6-4
numex big jim
costeno amarillo
alma paprika
spanish piquillo
nmsu has a chile pepper institute on campus and you can go and buy seed packets of rare types of chiles for cheap (they sell online and ship as well). Once I get better at this I'm gonna try growing the insanely hot/difficult varieties, i.e. ghost peppers.
nuevo mexico soil is kinda garbagio and i have limited yard space so i'm growing most of it in pots with a few in the ground. will report back with pics later this summer
-
For the record, ghosts are easy as hell to grow. As are Scorpions and Reapers!
Just getting them from seed to seedling/transplanting to ground is the most trying. After that its smooth sailing! Tomatoes always seem much more fragile in the early stages, IMO.

Yeah I've never done this before so I'm experimenting between seeding directly in the ground/pot and growing some seedlings inside then transplanting. Supposedly anything you directly seed here is hardier than those you grow inside (which is good in southern NM) so I'll be interested to see how the yields differ between those grow methods.
Nice part about this area is that there aren't any squirrels, but the birds are some aggressive mofos and there are a surprising amount of bugs for a place that gets 9 inches of rain a year.

Sounds like a good plan! We grow strictly from seed simply because we harvest our own annually and keep the heritage going, etc. Id much rather skip the first 2 months of seed/seedlings with heating pads and lighting, and just get plants to set in the ground, but I can't justify that to myself when we can do it ourselves. Its also a lot more rewarding, and we enjoy that part as well.
If you have birds that will even touch those plants I would be surprised. Worry more about ground rodents and insects. Aphids and caterpillars are the bane of my gardens existence. We buy ladybugs and release them every year to mitigate all we can. The best method, though, is just old school hand picking them off your plants daily. That and making some food/bee-safe sprays.

I've already had birds snatch chile seeds right out of the pots here so I've put some scarecrows up. Supposedly they have a natural resistance to capsaicin? But yeah I have a small amount of aphids in my peach tree that I'm trying to get rid of so I'm sure that's only a matter of time before I make a run for some ladybugs. Rodents are probably gonna be an issue too since I'm in the middle of the city.
We get a ton of natural sunlight here so I'm hoping that will make transplanting the seedlings I grow inside easier. Most advice I've seen says to just avoid disturbing the roots and don't put them outside all the time until well after our nightly lows stay above 60.

We do all kinds of things with them. Dehydrate and blend them into dried pepper for topping stuff, or add to rubs. We pickle some, and we fiddle with adding them to alcohol of differing types, just to see how nuts we can be haha.

:lick: what do you normally use those two beauties for?
We do all kinds of things with them. Dehydrate and blend them into dried pepper for topping stuff, or add to rubs. We pickle some, and we fiddle with adding them to alcohol of differing types, just to see how nuts we can be haha.

Had an abundance of pablano and aconcagua peppers last fall (over 10 lbs.). Cleaned the lot of them, applied olive oil and put on the smoker for an hour. Froze most of them and add to salsa, chili, etc. :lick:

Finally some good production going on! Gonna be some INSANE hot sauce in a month or so. will you send me a jar please?
Me too(first, since I responded to your earlier pepper post and had good questions) please?
Well, depending on how much we actually end up being able to make, I really could possibly send a small bottle/jar...
We just made this yesterday with a bunch of random stuff that was already ripe and needed to be used... (1st 2 pics for reference of peppers used...) But this is all allotted for friends here. Will report back once all those on the plants start ripening!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180730/2c73b6533953c45054d2222a141d92b1.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180730/2ba266860ad34591efadee19b7a4bd47.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180730/d67fa7e5390124ea2521645abb1a4fd4.jpg)

This crap is getting ridiculous...
TONS of peppers starting to ripen, threw some of the hot ones on the dehydrator today, and closed off the bar where they are drying. Smell is SO strong in there.
Zoom in on the 2nd pic and look at all the capsaicin oil on the ribs. Couple weeks ago. We have done this 3 times now, and I have done just as many on the dehydrator. It's at this point in the year that I'm basically ready to rip the plants out and throw them over the hill haha. Any way, hot sauce. Very, very hot sauce. I put the red barn fertilizer down last fall. I still have 2 bags of it in my shed to mix in with my compost pile throughout the year.

I’m excited to see what cDubs garden produces this year
-
Fruit trees are blooming and everything smells great, guys. My giant lime tree that once produced 200-300 limes in a season was hit hard by a freeze two years ago and is still coming back. Last year it gave me exactly one lime. This year it looks like I'll get 5-10.
Need to get my pepps and cukes and squash in the ground. Going to skip 'maters this year. Might also try growing a loofah squash.

Mostly peppers sewn this year. Couple new ones, and some heirlooms I'm selectively choosing after every year to keep the best specimens.
A few dozen sprouts/seedlings at the moment. Looking forward to getting past this stage and getting them in the ground!

Getting there!!!
Just dropped 160$ on full spectrum blue lights to help vegetative growth. We'll see how they fare soon enough. Harvested my first asparagus over the weekend. A packet of radish seeds blew off a table and dumped all its seeds in the asparagus bed, im just going to roll with it for now. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190415/863fb79d84fd764c5b63a76a9a3df5ac.jpg)

Sugar snap peas are popping along the edges of garden. Also planted a ton of radishes because they grow quickly, will be planting corn there in about a month. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190415/38c12c9ca85c93b88e15372764c199d1.jpg)

I haven't even tilled our garden yet this year. Still having overnight frosts! Probably gonna till this weekend and hopefully plant in another 2 weeks. Seedlings are taking off, though! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190415/244e6b36ce4dd8affa0b31fe35d1cee9.jpg)

Last year i grew some corn in the middle of my strawberry patch because.....well i guess i got bored?
Anyways it was a terrible idea and the corn sucked up all the nutrients and my strawberry patch is puny this year. (You can compare the small square of strawberrys that had no corn to the long row)
I bought 2 strawberry plants at the store to bring in some fresh blood, also added a ton of red barn fertilizer last fall so hopefully they grow back strong. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190415/723637951460645fe5bfa24923a9bb17.jpg)

Summer after freshman year I worked for my uncle's concrete company. We were putting in a foundation for a basement. I tripped over something and managed to catch myself about 2 inches away from impaling myself through the chest on a piece of rebar sticking up out of the ground. At the very least it was going to hurt really bad.

If you are looking for the easiest possible thing to grow its definitely radishes. I had an open package blow off a table and dump its seeds all over my yard.
Radishes are now growing in my lawn. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190430/fd99d3081cbfeafc520eef27429ab782.jpg)

We used to mix in radish and turnip seeds in with alfalfa when planting a patch. The turnips in the alfalfa field used to get huuuuuge.

Went and picked up some pollinators today!
New bee hive since we lost ours last year. Maybe some honey in the fall if they're hard workers, but we will at least get our veggies pollinated easily! Officially transitioned to the summer garden by harvesting/giving away all my lettuce. Still have a bunch of kale/swiss chard/mustard greens growing.
First cucumber seedlings have sprouted by the yellow tomato cages, planted some new seeds where the lettuce used to be as well.
Got rid of the broccoli as since it started to bloom. This was my second time trying to grow broccoli and i doubt i will try again.
I throw all of my unused/damaged tomatoes in the compost pile and have volunteer tomato plants sprouting up all over the yard so i planted some where the broccoli was. Im looking forward to seeing what kind of mutant crossbreed tomatoes will come off the vines!

I mean, basically. Lol.
Job change has shifted and drastically reduced my "free" time, and our extreme rain followed by extreme dry heat has totally wrecked my timing.
I just don't have the energy right now.
We'll see how it ends up, I have peppers growing. Just not the plant size/production I'm used to at this stage.

Mowed today and noticed the dry grass. Glad I didn't mess with a garden this year. Heck of a swing in weather from June to now.

Do you think I'm just going to give up and not grow any food this year? Get back on your saddle and turn some lemons into lemonade.

Haha, I'm working on it behind the gE scenes. Haven't been able to make time for serious garden attention and the plants are reflecting that greatly.
Been weeding in the evenings as time allows, and will be fertilizing (not something I do mid year) after that's done. We'll get through this, I'm sure.

I enjoy weeding in the evenings as well

Anyone plant a garden this year? I put some seeds in the ground in early March then spent 2 months at the cat ranch and came back to an overgrown mess.
Finally got it cleaned up and it looks like alot of carrots/mustard greens survived along with a couple heads of lettuce and the sugar snap peas.
Just threw down some lettuce/radish/spinach seeds tonight!

I'm almost all flowers this year. Planted a few cukes and poblanos, but other than that it's 1,000,000 sunflowers for me. I also built a giant raised bed butterfly garden for @MrsWonderMeal for Mother's Day that is basically a high quality Sirloin Stockade for pollinators.
Other than that, my lime/lemon trees are starting strong and fig tree got compliments from a neighbor. The wildcard this year is the pomegranate--looks like I might finally get some fruit off of it after about five years of waiting.

putting in two 8 x 4 wooden raised beds this weekend for onions, watermelons, lettuce, cantaloupes, and like 15 different types of tomatoes. tilling the ground here is a [redacted] but necessary because the soil's got no aeration or organic matter
direct sow on everything bc i was lazy and didn't feel like starting seeds inside back in march. also growing conditions in ABQ are far from elite kansas standards so i'd rather the seedlings just get established and sink or swim rather than have to harden them off and potentially watch them go to crap later because of some random 50 mph winds. adding drip irrigation when i'm done sowing bc we haven't had any rain in 50 years
growing crimson queen sunflowers on the western edge of the garden for afternoon shade so my plants don't get scalded to eff by the sun here. also on the northern edge for privacy from the adjacent road. growing cucumbers, taters, and squash in pots too.

Pics or it didnt happen

Yard's mumped, I know, I'm working on it. All but 1 of my 24 pepper plants has germinated and that last one got planted late so it should be coming up any day now. We've got a decently long growing season so even though I planted late I'll probably have veggies ready for picking starting around August and should have stuff going through late September.

bad person bunnies are whipping my ass this year. That and ground squirrels. I'm trying to not deal with shitty netting around my raised beds this year. Its always a PITA and i'm pretty sure the little bastards get in anyway. was planning on a better and more permanent option this year, but i'm being lazy. they have munched my jalapeño and red pepper plants so much i'm not sure if they will recover. i've been spraying some pepper based repellent on them and they are coming back a bit.
may need to get a cat. didn't have this prob a few years ago when Kitty was alive.

Have you considered an AR-15?

heh. Fitz, I've got a cat who seems like an absolute murderer. I'm willing to give her to you, free of charge.

Have a dog. Chases the crap out of every animal all day every day. It is her life's goal to catch a bunny or squirrel. They apparently come out at night and munch.
I'm not a gun person. Can I set the gun up to just fire at things that move near the garden at night? This seems better than getting a cat.

Be careful. Spring-guns and mantraps can lead to some troubs.

goddamn. left for oregon for like a week and a half after installing my drip irrigation system and the stuff i planted between the chiles is already going nuts.

The tomatillos (top middle) blew the eff up and the borage (top left) is looking great. Basil, cosmos and dill all are doing great on the bottom. Chiles have all sprouted and most are doing solid but I'm a little worried their roots might get crowded out by the herbs. I think I'll put the herbs at the top in future years to give the chiles some afternoon shade.

Zinnia on the left is already looking great, just hoping it won't crowd out the superhots. Amaranth is going nuts on the right. Think I'm gonna make a salad out of the amaranth leaves later this week so that the chiles don't get overwhelmed.

Everything's already sprouted in the wooden raised beds (tomatoes, melons, herbs, onions, carrots) and I've done a bunch of thinning. I'm not sure if my drip irrigation system has a leak or if it's just natural flow from the soil, I'll check on that later. But everything is getting the water it needs, it's been rainy the past few days but all the plants survived/germinated and grew during 100+ temps for all of last week.

I'm incredibly bad at growing carrots but I keep trying every year.

I like how the one on the end is dabbing

The soil where I live is crap and raised beds are pretty much the only way to grow anything successfully. Helps ensure good drainage, provides room for the roots to spread out, etc.
