For the record, ghosts are easy as hell to grow. As are Scorpions and Reapers!

Just getting them from seed to seedling/transplanting to ground is the most trying. After that its smooth sailing! Tomatoes always seem much more fragile in the early stages, IMO.

Yeah I've never done this before so I'm experimenting between seeding directly in the ground/pot and growing some seedlings inside then transplanting. Supposedly anything you directly seed here is hardier than those you grow inside (which is good in southern NM) so I'll be interested to see how the yields differ between those grow methods.

Nice part about this area is that there aren't any squirrels, but the birds are some aggressive mofos and there are a surprising amount of bugs for a place that gets 9 inches of rain a year.

Sounds like a good plan! We grow strictly from seed simply because we harvest our own annually and keep the heritage going, etc. Id much rather skip the first 2 months of seed/seedlings with heating pads and lighting, and just get plants to set in the ground, but I can't justify that to myself when we can do it ourselves. Its also a lot more rewarding, and we enjoy that part as well.

If you have birds that will even touch those plants I would be surprised. Worry more about ground rodents and insects. Aphids and caterpillars are the bane of my gardens existence. We buy ladybugs and release them every year to mitigate all we can. The best method, though, is just old school hand picking them off your plants daily. That and making some food/bee-safe sprays.

I've already had birds snatch chile seeds right out of the pots here so I've put some scarecrows up. Supposedly they have a natural resistance to capsaicin? But yeah I have a small amount of aphids in my peach tree that I'm trying to get rid of so I'm sure that's only a matter of time before I make a run for some ladybugs. Rodents are probably gonna be an issue too since I'm in the middle of the city.

We get a ton of natural sunlight here so I'm hoping that will make transplanting the seedlings I grow inside easier. Most advice I've seen says to just avoid disturbing the roots and don't put them outside all the time until well after our nightly lows stay above 60.

Cdub what kind of grow light Are you using?  I have two 100W CFL bulbs with 6500k spectrum and they seem to do alright but still get some leggy seedlings.

Do you guys love tart cherries as much as I do?  Nothing says 4th of July like a big slab of cherry pie loaded with vanilla ice cream.  We’re absolutely loaded this year and ripening just in time.

hey tdaver, i don't much like cherries.  they're really just miniature plums but they act like they're a different fruit.  very dishonest.  avoid!

Get with the times, wetwillie.  Our Canadian friends have been doing amazing work in the cherry department for years now.  Do yourself a favor and google “SK Carmine Jewel”.

I wrapped some of the other stalks in netting and set a trap.

Lady might have to go on night guard duty if this keeps happening.
