Benji, put that raised bed where you want it, then turn the soild below it before filling it with black dirt.  Then turn it again once the black dirt is int it.  The 3.5" of the 2x4 on its side isn't deep enough for a bunch of plants eventual roots.  Turning the first time loosens the grass and earth below.  The second turn mixes the black dirt to the lower depth.
Great tip cns.

Plant some yellow squash, zucchini, green and red peppers they go great on the grill or in salads! You might be able to get some cool season lettuce or broccoli going pretty soon! Double crop that SOB!

Peppers, tomatoes, squash in early May.

Just got done doing this!

First I turned over the soil.

Then I added some compost from the fall and turned it over again.

Last step was adding a top layer of last years compost that was basically dirt. I didn't have enough to completely fill it in so ill buy a couple bags of dirt at the store.

Heading to the store now to grab some spinach/lettuce/kale seeds to get them in the ground!

Go cats!

Yeah, decided to nix the seed idea and buy some that had already sprouted.

First row is kale, second row is spinach, third row is lettuce and 4/5th row is broccoli.

I"'ll probably replace whatever doesn't do well with peppers and other things once summer gets here.

anyone heard of/ tried aquaponic gardening?  You grow fish and plants at the same time with no soil.  Basic set up looks something like this.

The fish waste is pumped up to the grow bed and used as fertilizer for the plants who clean and filter the water and return it back to the fish holding tank.  I don't really have any interest in eating the fish but it requires alot less water and grows plants 2-3X faster if done right.

There is a big farm that used to be a dairy farm near my old house that told all the cows to GTFOOTF's then filled the barns with tanks and raise talapia then use the waste water to grow basil and other herbs that they sell in KC pricechoppers as live basil.  Seems like it would be very indepth to set up and maintain for some veggies on the small scale.

I know someone that did this.  It works amazingly well!  Everything grows much faster, you are able to control everything about it.  No worries about pesticides, or fertilizers, since the fish take care of that part.  The great part is once the fish reach a certain size you can eat them too.  It's great circle of life!

Anton's Taproom.  They also have a decent patio area for spring afternoons.

hi ben ji

I am buying a house soon and in my yard i will have subsistence garden of borderline doomsday prep proportions

I want to grow blueberries so I have been saving my coffee grounds at work in a bucket to add to the soil to make it more acidic.

Sorry I missed this earlier, I want to grow blue berries or blackberries in a corner of my yard but I know nothing about it.

Can anyone help puni and I?

I've grown raspberries, do you want to grow raspberries?

Here's another great guide on growing blueberries from our purple Wildcats university (click the "Growing blueberries in Kansas" link and it will give you a pdf of a power point)

Looks like you guys may be facing a uphill battle and may not even get berries for a couple years! :surprised:

Yeah, not looking to wait a entire year before getting berries.

Will raspberries produce in the first year?
