it's those rough ridin' insects or snails or maybe rats or something.  they just want to eat everything.

one think i will not do is plant heirloom tomatoes. only genetically engineered impervious resilient science tomatoes. last year i had one science tomato that was gangbusters and one heirloom tomato that was a huge waste of time because it all got eaten by bugs instantly.

i did ok with heirloom tomatoes in containers.  i think maybe they aren't so good at living in the ground.

imagine if Long John Silvers served deer in their drive-thru.  the deer would be lined up over a mile long at every LJS location

Took advantage of the great weather yesterday to get the garden started. Last year I bought mini tini plants of Kale/Spinach/Lettuce/Broccoli but it was stupid expensive, like $25 bucks. This year I am trying to go Au Natural and sprout it from seeds.

I turned over my Elevated garden bed and added a 2 inch layers of miracle grow soil on top. To plant the seeds I basically just dug a 1 inch deep trench across and sprinkled seeds(Kale and Spinach) throughout then covered and watered it real good. Assuming everything sprouts I'll thin out some of the seedlings to keep everything spaced out.

Planning on planting some summer crops on the side that hasnt been prepped yet.

I also prepped the Landscape Gardens for spring by removing all the leaves/dead material and watering the crap out of all the perennials. I was super pumped to see some bulbs I planted last fall starting to shoot up, felt like a real manly man.

you should tent that with some clear plastic or something.  I mean, our average last freeze is something like the middle of April.

You can start kale/spinach/lettuce etc before the last freeze. Its plants like tomatoes/peppers/beans etc that you plant after the last freeze.

Went to the local Wallys to get my 2015 State of Kansas Fishing License and decided to check out the garden center.

Ended up buying some strawberry roots because strawberry's are awesome and it was like $3.

The package came with 10 different "Roots" all bundled up in a ball with "sprouts" coming out of the roots. Soaked them in water for an hour then separated them into their individual roots.

I planted 3 in the back corner of my yard that gets the most sun and put the rest in pots to give away or replant later.

ben ji--glad to hear about the greens you put in. I'm sure the seeds will work out great. I'm also happy to hear you're trying strawberries. Mama WM grew a bunch of them growing up, and we'd pick them and make strawberry pie.

I put in a lot of work this weekend. Planted the following:
-Tomatoes (four varieties)
-Marigolds (to assist w/ pest control for tomatoes)
-Assorted herbs (dill/basil/parsley/mint)
-Jalapenos
-Bok choy
-More lettuce
-Camellias (seafoam and royal velvet)
-Brunfelsia (the most EMAW of plants--flowers that change from white to lavendar to purple)
-Clematis (purple)

These new friends join those already in progress:
-Mustard greens (tons)
-Green onions
-Spinach (tons)
-Romaine
-Pole beans
-Kale (tons)
-Blueberries
-Gladiolus
-Ranunculus
-Assorted hydrangeas/gardenias

And in the best news yet, my fruit trees are starting to blossom and have flowered like never before. I was worried that the transplant and somewhat late fertilizing would mean a weak crop this year, but so far things look very promising. I mean, there are just flowers everywhere. Pretty pumped about it. Grass looks nice and lush after a couple of nice rains, too.

strawberries are easy except birds always eat them the day before you want to pick.

What if my backyard is crawling with garter snakes and an adorable dog?

Also I saw a tiny baby garter snake in my front garden area yesterday. I was watering my plants and as I worked my way down this lil guy would stay keep moving to stay out of the way of the water. Eventually he squirmed underneath the wood mulch to gobble up some rolly pollys.

can't hurt.  but i think they mostly eat them at like 5 in the morning or some crap.  are you going to make lady sleep in the garden?

Dang. Wish I could've grown up in a house like that. My dad just cooked us spaghetti and fish sticks.
