Bought a car today (spent the same amount that the hellantra sold for), finally move into our house next week. Hotel life lost its luster long ago.

Here's a weird thing about beems in Japan: the blinker is still on the left. This will seriously stunt my Japanese driving brain development as the blinkers in all J-cars are on the right.

Punimrs thought briefly that I was being mean/racist taking pictures of the engrish fashion for my amusement, but then I explained that they were coopting American culture and language for use as mere decoration on consumer products and she should be the offended one. I'm sure Japanese take pictures of kanji on affliction shirts in America and post it on their jblogs.

Puni, do you watch the show Girls on HBO? Well Shoshana moved to Japan this season, and I want to know if it is really like it looks on the show.
She works at a Cat Cafe where people have drinks while petting cats. Also, she went to this place where she was hanging out with friends having drinks (a bar?) and there were dominatrix type chicks whipping the patrons. And then they had Shoshana put on a rubber nurses uniform.
And this is where she lives...
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Frack.0.mshcdn.com%2Fmedia%2FZgkyMDE2LzAzLzE3LzY4LzZiMTRiYTQyNzI0LjEyMmE1LmpwZwpwCXRodW1iCTk1MHg1MzQjCmUJanBn%2F10c8633d%2F816%2F6b14ba42724640c8a1f4afa88673b5e3.jpg&hash=044956243d5c203e5b562b498a90cedf71a47fd9)
Also, at least 50% of the people walking down the street look like anime characters.
-
Haha rad. I've seen into somewhere in season 2. Should I watch more when I get hbogo for 3 months to watch GoT?
I don't see much of it, but all that stuff is real. Cat cafes are the most common. There are countless themed bars and restaurants with weird settings and costumes that do weird crap. There are also "girls bars" and maid cafes where people pay to have women (maybe costumed roleplayers) hang out with them and pretend to be their gfs, wives, dominatixes, anime characters or whatever.
I've only been to the Internet famous Robot Restaurant which at this point is more like a batshit broadway production than a restaurant.
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160324%2F749248116bf94970fc46ae03f37437e8.jpg&hash=f0aaeab8ecaf71bfe65b45586224022be08a303f)
Most of that stuff is concentrated in the big nightlife, stereotype j-culture areas like Shinjuku or Roppongi, but it's def real.
I've seen many weird/insane buildings and houses but not those. Looks like a love hotel.

There are times and places where people who are dressed up like anime characters or other unusual fashion gather. You can see them migrate to the train station Friday nights and Saturdays. Typical workweek anime character population: zero (not counting the people who have to dress like that for work)
Weekend anime character population: 5%? (This is still a shitload of people)
As a large bearded white guy, they probably think I am an anime character 100% of the time.

This really makes me want to visit Japan.

Mostly the same? Domestic laced shoes have zippers on the side so you can get them on and off easily without un-tieing. That's kind of cool.
New Balance seem to be the most popular sneaks here, probably because made in America.

I am sure this has been covered, but isn't their alphabet really just word shapes? Then, when you write, you write words on top of words or something?

They are called kanji, that is all I know about this subject. Hopefully someone else can fill in the gaps.
-
There are 3 character sets in simultaneous use at all times. Hiragana and katakana are syllabaries that each have 46 characters and cover all the sounds available to the language.
Kanji are a [redacted]. Your are illiterate until you can read 1000 or so. Kanji are composed of any number of 216 radicals which are the basic building block kanji. The best part is that each kanji has 2 or more pronunciations: the Chinese pronunciation and one or more Japanese pronunciations.
Schoolchildren are considered adequately literate when they know 2000 kanji.
Oh. There is also romaji, which is the official approximation of Japanese using the English alphabet. No clue how they typewritered, but this is how the majority type on computer. They have to type in the romaji and the computer autocorrects it to Japanese characters.

kind of, evolved from pictures. sometimes there is patterns, sometimes patterns don't work. each character is a simple word and one syllable, which combines to more complicated words. an example is, dragon is 1 character. shrimp is another character. dragon + shrimp = lobster. cold + box = refrigerator, people + monster = tranny, etc. this is for chinese, dunno how the damn japs do it :curse:

I work for America and get paid in Ameribucks. I have to change cash to yen at an exchange or get out yen from a 7/11 ATM. Most things are cash here but I can use credit cards sometimes.
Rent, utilities, internet, all cash. You take your bills to a convenience store (konbini) and they scan the barcodes and you pay them cash and they stamp them about 40 times and rip off some parts to give back to you.

that bills thing is nuts!

It's the Kuroshio current - southern Japan has California's topography but the Carolina's weather patterns
-
The Corvallis affect, water near the equator is pulled more by the earths rotation than near the poles. This creates a clockwise motion to the currents in the northern hemisphere. Those currents bring humid tropical water from the equator to the westernmost extent and cold temperate water to the easternmost extent. Interestingly enough, this also explains why Europe is much more temperate than it ought to be along the atlantic. Those same forces bring water from the gulf. Impeded by Greenland it doesn't venture as far north and thus cool down as much as Pacific waters do passing alaska.

PP: thick Yokohama style noodles, seared pork with blowtorch
NN: no egg, broth too salty, pork was chewy and old tasting.
Glad I branched out, but sad I wasn't rewarded with a superior experience as positive reinforcement. Another few reps at my fave before I try again probably.

Pretty epic. Way more challenging than I expected. We left the 5th station (typical starting point where busses drop off) at 630PM and reached the summit at 330AM, in time for the 445AM sunrise.

Headlamp is mandatory.
Enough gear to survive temps ranging from hot to freezing. Rain gear in case it rains (thank God it didn't because I just had 100yen ponchos from the daiso).
We overpacked snacks of course. Bring shitloads of water or prepare to pay shitloads for it. Save water for the descent because there is nowhere to buy it on the down trail and you will get super dehydrated like me. If it's a weekend or holiday, prepare for it to be ridiculously crowded with thousands of people. Look out for people altitude sickness barfing. It's not super high, but the rate of ascent catches alot of people by surprise. Gold Bond your chafe points.

Two things:
1) If thousands of people are climbing it, then it can't be that challenging.
2) Have you lost weight since your move?
-
1) it is exactly like frodo's journey up Mt Doom except you have to walk back down.
2) yes*
-
1) If thousands of people are climbing it, then it can't be that challenging.
this is the dumbest, i don't even
-
I'm sure it would be challenging for seven. :D
-
Small hills are challenging for me
-
thousands of people doing something does not make it not challenging emo, i mean were you serious?
-
i carry multiple dead elk up and down that thing regularly
-
In this instance I am serious, yes.
Boston Marathon, organized event, qualify, bla bla, ok that's challenging even though thousands of people are doing it.
But Mount Fuji...
300,000 people climbed it in 2009. That's not exactly an amount that is exclusive enough to exclude people that aren't in top fitness. Also, if the kind of people that buy a 100 yen rain cover can climb it, that also speaks to how challenging it isn't. There are no technical sections, no need for special equipment, belaying, crevasses, etc. It's a hike, simple as that.
-
DOUBLING DOWN! :excited:
-
It's only 3 miles from the parking lot to the summit.
-
You're right emo, the list of things more difficult is certainly quite long. Everest, k2, Kilimanjaro, childbirth, the FE, a hundred other mountains, some elk thing, you finish the rest.
-
Did you normalize for the fact that these thousands of people are Japanese people who are tough as crap and cherish suffering?
-
You're right emo, the list of things more difficult is certainly quite long. Everest, k2, Kilimanjaro, childbirth, the FE, a hundred other mountains, some elk thing, you finish the rest.
Billions of people give birth every year. :nono:
-
I had considered that as an unknown but I'm not specifically familiar. If you told me the failure rate was significant (more than 30 percent [even because of weather]) I'd be willing to reconsider my assessment. You think the Japanese are tough as crap? Why?
I do think it's pretty badass to make it a goal to be up there by sunrise. Americans don't generally do that here, like on 14ers or whatever.
-
Ya giving birth is not a challenge.
-
It's only 3 miles from the parking lot to the summit.
7.5km up, 7.6 down, 1471m elevation change on this (most popular and easiest) trail.
-
Staying up all night is already hard enough, then add climbing (hiking) a mountain on to that.
-
It's only 3 miles from the parking lot to the summit.
7.5km up, 7.6 down, 1471m elevation change on this (most popular and easiest) trail.
So you don't come back down the same way you come up?

No, they have (no crap) lanes with dividers like a highway because so many people are doing this pleasure hike.

Not true, it's a separate trail. The down trail is the tractor path they use to bring supplies to the top. It's actually the hardest part. The whole length is switchbacks of maybe 40deg down that is entirely loose gravel/sand/ash.
And no toilets or places to buy water!
-
The elevation looks like it can kick your butt but I think emo has me convinced this is otherwise fairly easy. I rate it 2 out of 5 hello kitties

that's the first long stretch. its actually more difficult than you expect because you are slogging through sand/gravel/ash/ loose rock

Never tried, because killing an elk is actually challenging.

FWIW, we were with a experienced hiker who has hiked multiple 14ers and he said he would rather be shot and stabbed than hike Fuji again overnight.

It was probably challenging climbing over all the tired little Japanese people.
If you fail, do you #harikari right there?

Emo just said shooting an animal is challenging and a 14er is not. Case closed.

Nope. Neither are things one can just get off a couch and do. Shooting and hiking are both done by millions a year.

To say shooting an elk is harder than a hike is laughable. Finding and tracking would the hardest part. Not the shooting of a large animal.

When Emo does something it is challenging. It matters not what it is, if Emo is a part, consider it arduous. We are all just pretending we have any concept of the struggles, battles, and work that he has put in to achieve even a modicum of success. I, for one, lay down my sword. I'll go home and let my name die out after a few generations. I'll come to rue the day i attempted this mountainous ascent to Emo's mindseye, but am glad to say I met a titan.

so last Monday we got the day off due to a direct hit by a (pud) typhoon. A bigger typhoon was supposed to hit tomorrow but its tracking way north now and we probably wont close the office. When I expressed my disappointment that I wouldn't get a free day off work (making today a Monday Friday), the Japanese workers GASPED IN HORROR.
the very concept of wanting a free day off work and even more than that expressing it out loud is apparently a major thoughtcrime and taboo
-
that was a very enjoyable story, T_Y

What is a Monday Friday

Sorry if you've covered this before...are your daily interactions with colleagues in Engrish?

What is a Monday Friday
I would have taken that as only having to work one day during that week...but he was only saying one day off....So I am confused.
-
A Friday is a day you work but don't have to work the next day. I thought that was universally defined.

85% of my interactions are with Nihonjin
-
I thought they worked Saturday's in Japan?
Not me or us but 6 day workweeks are generally common. It's still a weekend, more people are off work than a weekday.
-
there is just no way if you have Monday off you call it Monday Friday
-
there is just no way if you have Monday off you call it Monday Friday
Of course not. If you are at work Monday and have Tuesday off, that's a Monday Friday.
-
You don't have to like it, but my definitions are quite unassailable.
-

Speaking English or Japanese?

English of varying quality either directly or through an interpreter.

A Monday Friday would be a day you work but didn't work the previous 2 days and don't work the next 2 days.

Wow. I would love to do that for some length of time at my choosing.

No that doesn't sound right.
I don't know how j-weekends work but normally on a Monday you didn't work the two days before and on a Friday you don't work the two days after, so my definition makes sense.

So you're saying that if you got called into the office on Saturday, Monday wouldn't feel like a Monday?
Yes, that is what I am saying. I would be like, I need to take Monday off to get my rest.
-
I worked for a few hours yesterday and today still feels like Monday
-
Your are burdened by the past and the distant future. Try narrowing to the Now and the Tomorrow for a week and see how you feel. Probably great.

Exactly.

OK, So next week I am going to have Monday and Friday off. So I'll have a Monday Tuesday, then Wednesday, then Thursday Friday.

I wouldn't name most of those other days because they aren't useful in the context of "what am I doing today and what do I have to do tomorrow?"
-
coming up for me is a Friday Thursday and a Monday Tuesday (today is regular Monday).
my question: is this Sunday a Saturday Sunday?

What has been your biggest adjustment living in j-ville so far (apart from food)
change: uprooting my (our) life and starting fresh somewhere I (we) don't know anybody or anything about anything.
Literacy: Out in the world I am basically illiterate. I am gradually figuring out useful things like food, beer, places. I have really gained a renewed appreciation for literacy which I previously had taken for granted.
work: I have to work a lot harder under stricter conditions. I have it figured out now so this isn't really bad. It's nice to change things up and have to prove yourself all over again.
driving lifestyle: unless you live in New York City or "The City" American's are used to being able to easily drive anywhere whenever. Not here. A car is an albatross. A curse and a burden. Unless I'm going to work or a mall or big box store its hell to find parking and when you do its super expensive. Also driving on the tollways is redic expensive. imagine it if cost $35 each way to get from MHK to Topeka. Also you can't drive at all after having even one drink. DUI is a super huge deal here.
culture: group harmony. not disturbing others. minding your own business. good of the whole. This is the opposite of America and quite refreshing. this way of being is more in alignment with my natural self. Few things I love more than minding my own business.
-
Do they frontpack there?

do many people ride bikes around you? what about vespa-like scooters?
-
bikes and scooters are everywhere. they normally ride on the leftmost side of the road and are supposed to have a max speed limit of 30kph but can pass traffic. they also can ride on the sidewalks if they yield to pedestrians and dismount at crosswalks. In reality its straight up fury road. They split lanes and weave in and out of cars and generally terrify me. Basically the Japanese accident liability is as follows pedestrian>bike>scooter>motorcycle>car>truck>gaijin. Basically if you get into a crash with a bike it will be totally your fault regardless of what happened.
one of my coworkers got creamed last week riding his bike down a hill past stopped traffic when a car suddenly turned left in front of him and he t-boned it and got effed up. the car was assessed complete liability, so they have to pay all the damages. Also she had to come meet him at the police station to offer him a sincere personal apology, "gomenasai".
-
there are way more bikes than cars. I would like to bike to work but I haven't gotten around to it.

In highschool this one girl backed into my whip in the p lot and tried to skip the scene, but thankfully one of my bros noted her plate num. The next day, we were both called into the office so that she could apologize to my face. :Wha:

Also apparently a tatu song

puni why do you add the Japanese translation of a thing? Like, it makes me think it's more than just a translation but I can't really put a finger on how. For example, in Spanish:
They served this wonderful condiment meant for scooping up with chips, chopped up fresh tomatos, cilantro, onions, "pico de gallo."
But it doesn't really seem the same or even comparable.
-
Is the culture more or less restricting for the Mrs? I mean, relocating to a place where you are more limited in the view of society would kinda suck. Seems like most of Asia would be like this. :dunno:

He was specifying that the lady had to do a "gomennasai" and not a "sumimasen".
"Sumimasen" is like "excuse me," for a light apology, or when stopping someone on the street to ask directions, when trying to pass someone in a narrow street, etc.
"Gomennasai" is "I am sorry," a real apology.
-
Side note:
I know several people who moved to Jutland (rural) Denmark for the company. Moved their wives/family there. While Danish people are super nice, they also pretty much don't do anything after 5 or 6PM. Not much opportunity to go out to dinner or movies or stuff like that. They just hole themselves up inside their homes and be with their families. Which, nothing wrong with that of course, I/we mostly do the same thing now that we have a son. But, it makes it very tough to integrate for an expat and his stay-at-home-wife and family.

Puni, do you get lost often since you can't read the road signs?

Well confirmed it's cool as eff, "suave."
-
Puni, do you get lost often since you can't read the road signs?
Google maps works pretty well most of the time for driving, trains, and walking.
The Digital age has made getting lost obsolete.
It's boned me a few times though.
Sometimes it shows the incorrect terminus of the train you want causing you to doubt yourself and miss your train or get on the wrong train.
-
How did Japan receive the Last Samurai?
I'll ask. Normally they love any direct attention for Japan and they also love the subject time period in their entertainment, but would probably laugh at the portrayal of feudal samurai Japan as anything but brutal and cruel. Samurai are normally the bad guys in their telanovellas.

yes they do use this skill. I use it to even out my sweat saturation. also you frontpack on the train so you don't bump people with your bag. but not exclusively, only when necessary.

I'll try to be observant of frequency. I think it makes a good ergonomic rest for you hands and phone while you are catching 'em all to be the very best.
-
It def predates pokemon. I've never seen anyone functionally use the frontpack, unless it's all about subtle polite spacing like you alluded to on a train.
-
I put my backpack between my legs on trains, but I have frontpacked when getting my bike off crowded trains
Also Puni, do you ever watch Japanese TV? Any favorite shows?
-
i always thought people frontpacked because they are worried of theft
-
i always thought people frontpacked because they are worried of theft
this is correct, can't see people jacking your crap behind your back

My current train has two east Asian front packers, a south Asian who had the backpack on back and it was in my face and infuriating me, and a black man drinking a 40oz can of Modelo and another man of unknown race drinking a 40oz can of corona

Basically no. Nothing that limits her. Its definitely a male dominated society with expectations of traditional gender roles, but on the ground it feels more egalitarian than America. For as much integrated misogyny seems to appear in the culture there are just as many surprisingly advanced views on women.
I will try to share some relevant anecdotes slash tidbits.

generally illegal with the exception of PACHINKO parlours which are practically on every corner. basically the slot machine experience but so incredibly loud and smokey its almost impossible to imagine. the #ack? its still technically illegal to gamble so instead of winning money you win a "prize" like a stuffed animal or something that you sell back to them for real money.

I've been looking out for this. The front packer rate is actually quite low (when not on the train). it may be skewed because the majority of people use messenger bags, obscuring their frontpacking nature.
I walk through a series of tunnels that get a massive breeze. I switch to front pack when the wind is at my back in an effort to evaporate some of my sweat.

its in the news, mostly about Obama speaking and then about Abe's scheduled visit to pearl harbor later in the month.
no real changes on that day. I do have some old guy coworkers who love to talk about it. one has a big conspiracy theory about how the soviet union tricked japan into the attack.
generally everyone is pretty much in agreement that it was a bad idea.

War with America was the bad idea. The pearl harbor attack was the best way to kick it off and was ridiculously successful.
most articles find a way to mention that admiral yamamoto, the architect of the attack, was completely against war with America and predicted total defeat and disaster. But he got told to make it happen, so he did his best.

I guess I need to learn (remember) how Japan even became aggressive in the first place, how their alliance with Germany came to be. If war with the US was inevitable it was a good idea.

The book Flyboys by James Bradley is excellent at giving a pretty good description of how insular the Japanese culture was. There is an actual event that some believe was the cause of Japan's militarization but I don't want to spoil it if you interested in reading the book.
Yamamoto had been to the US and seen the vast resources of the US and knew beating the US was next to impossible but the "brain trust" of Japan was a dangerous combo of ignorance, arrogance and desperation in charge of a general population with unquestioning loyalty and duty as its #1 trait.

The Japanese had some very strange ideas about race and culture that made them a "fit" with the Germans in their own way. The book I want to read is the history of this philosophy and symbolism and how North Korea adopted their ideology and adapted it to Korea.

Might the Japs have been able to achieve a stalemate if it weren't for the bomb?
Well they "conditionally" surrendered any way, so yes. I don't think it would've been in their interest to continue in a prolonged fight in the Pacific, but there probably would've been more concessions about keeping territory in China and the US would not have as many navy bases in the Pacific islands and Hawaii might have been much less like a tourist destination and more like a major naval outpost.

they wouldn't have had much negotiating leverage. if the us would have been reluctant to finish them with conventional forces, the soviet union would have been happy to step in.

I doubt the USSR would've worked that hard to establish a front on the other side of China. They didn't have the air force or the Navy to threaten Japan. If we assume they don't develop the bomb before we did or were as free to use it as we did.
-
What does the USSR stand to gain by taking over Japan? Access to bamboo or something?
-
As a semi-related question, are there any noticeable effects on the culture from being on the receiving end of the bombs? I've seen some theories that Japanese sexual fetishes stem from the shame/shock/fallout of those events and ww2 atrocities in general. Same with germans and poop.
-

by then japan's air force and navy were already pretty much finished.

Goddamnit lib
-
another book that somewhat touches on this subject is the Flags of our Father's book and it made the argument that the "island hopping" battles like Iwo Jima showed US decision makers that Japan would never surrender and they might really do the every man, woman and child thing. And the Japanese pretty much confirmed it by not surrendering after Hiroshima.

No way, they were already militarily defeated. The best hope at the START of the war was a stalemate.
A blockade of the home islands would have starved them into surrender in a year or two.
But an extended siege doesn't demonstrate to the world your new superweapon.

Probably, but they were into some weird crap long before the bomb.

Imperial Japan aspired to join the big dogs and be a global empire like America, Great Britain, and Germany.
I think the axis pact was meant to act as deterrence to America to let Japan grow their SE Asian empire.

puni: Can you tell me if this is a thing at your office and cross post to the hilarious things at work thread?
While common other places, it's not really a thing at our office. I think you would get in trouble for sleeping on the job. However, the Nihonjin snarf their lunch in like 5 minutes and sleep the rest of their lunch break. They all have eye masks and footrests an just kick back in their desk chair. One guy has an alarm clock that wakes everyone at the end of lunch.
When I first started I went to talk to someone during their lunch break about a work thing but later got a talking to from management about how they aren't to be disturbed.

Last night I watched Tora Tora Tora. It seemed to imply the J Army was operating independently of the larger J govt and because of their insistence to continue operations in China they forced the US into blocking trade and that precipitated the action by the J Navy.

Puni, do Japanese people care that ScarJo was cast in Ghost in the Shell, and not a Japanese actress?
-
Lost in Translation tho
-
No. I tried to explain why it was controversial in America and they still didn't get it. My movie buff Japanese friend thinks the casting is great because Major Kusanagi isn't necessarily Japanese and is an Android anyway. Also they say anime is escapism because their country is so homogeneous they enjoy the exotic and outlandish foreign characters. It's difficult to explain American racial politics to a country that is so completely different.
-
I went further into explaining the systematic whitewashing or stereotyping of azian roles in Hollywood and they eventually were like "huh, I guess that kind of sucks if you explain it like that"
-

I watched a video on FB where they asked Japanese people the same thing and then had to explain like you said and they had pretty much the same reaction.

What stereotyping of Asian roles? Examples?
-
Like Dong / 16 Candles?
-
Basically since foreigners are living breathing cartoon characters to them, it makes perfect sense to cast a foreigner as a cartoon character.

Data / Goonies?
Chow / Hangover?
Takagi / Die Hard?
Miagi / Karate Kid?
Short Round / Indiana Jones?
Jackie Chan / lots of stuff

Like Tilda Swinton in Dr Strange. Like a million other things. Like Matt Damon.

Stop being so racist. Just because you remember an Asian name from a movie doesn't mean the only Asian guy in the movie had that name. SMDH.

He (Takagi) didn't have the codes to the vault. You really think Nakatomi wouldn't have the codes to his own vault?
-
Emma Stone as a Japanese character in decendents (?)
Wrong movie but yes, premier example.
If you are talking about Aloha, that character was a half-Asian who did not look Asian - that was like a major part of the story (or so I've heard). Do you know how hard it would be to find an Asian actor who does not look Asian but is still Asian enough not to get the whitewashing backlash???
-
I thought it was his namesake tower? Sorry.
He (Takagi) didn't have the codes to the vault. You really think Nakatomi wouldn't have the codes to his own vault?
His need to know was streamlined during kaizen.

puniraptor, please compare and contrast the japanese carrot scene with the american carrot scene.
comparisons: available, orange, whole
contrasts: no "baby" carrots, round fatties compared to long skinnies, not used very often in local cuisine
in general, the quality and diversity of available produce here far exceeds the US norm. carrots seem to be an exception. I really only see this one kind, but in my experience they are very good as far as carrots go.
-
Puni, how concerned are you that nk will drop a nuke on your head?
not very. japan is protected by fully modern US missile killing tech and I don't think NK will be successful at putting a nuke on a missile for the duration of my time here. I think the biggest risk of me being nuked will be if I travel to Seoul on the wrong day.

We sat in the visitors section. One amazing thing is that they won't let you wear home team gear in the visitors section and vice versa. They will make you take off your Stars shirt or turn inside out.

I had raw horse at a bar Saturday.
raw horse review: very hemoglobin-y. very chewy. I think these slices were too big. it didn't really break down when chewed, so I just formed it into a sphere for swallowing.
flavor was most like lean bluefin tuna sashimi, which is probably why they like it. I don't have any evidence that "they" like it though because none of the Japanese people I was with tried it.

It looks like you put a bag of dog poop in a case that molds it to a vaguely bone shaped creation. And then attach the case to the back of your car? I guess it's magnetic? Lots of lolwtf going on there.

To avoid having a poo smell in your car? Seems like a good seal would alleviate the need for the magnet. But who knows.
-
Japanese people don't wear shoes in their homes, they def don't put crap in their cars, good seal or not.

Pro-tip: throw the poop bag away before you get to your car :th_twocents:

Seems pretty self-explanatory to me.
Donpac don pac is a pet accessory that puts pets, dogs, and puts it on the car and exile the smell from the inside of the car.
It is a case that you can put it on the body of a car with a dog's punch.
With a strong magnet! You can exile odors from inside the car.

low dog poop IQ
Japanese people don't wear shoes in their homes, they def don't put crap in their cars, good seal or not.
exactly. but get this... they take the dog poop inside and flush it down the toilet
Is the donpac+ really much better than the donpac????
I think it's size. the plus holds a 600cc whopper
Pro-tip: throw the poop bag away before you get to your car :th_twocents:
there are basically no public trash bins anywhere.* except inside convenience stores and nobody would be so inconsiderate to the beloved 7eleven employees.
you are expected to take your trash home with you.
they actually make cute little handbags specifically for holding your dog poop filled bags as you are walking your dog so innocent people aren't grossed out by seeing your poop filled dog bag. every Japanese dog walker has one.
get this other invention: our Japanese dog poop bags have 3 layers: first is like flushable toilet paper in direct contact with the poop, second is a normal plastic poop bag and third is like a mini plastic grocery bag with handles/ties.
you pick up the poop with the whole deal, twist shut the plastic poop bag, and carry that in the mini bag with handles (if you don't have a poop purse). when you get home, you open the poop bag, dump the poop paper into the toilet and flush it, then you can put the poop bag into the handle bag and tie it shut for an airtight seal and throw it in your home plastics trash.
*I know you mean just chucking it into the woods American style
-
Poop purse is a great idea, it always grosses me out when people are walking around with visible poop bags.
-
I'm not grossed out by it, but feel there is something embarrassing and/or shameful about the basic plastic bag.
-
I remember seeing a very beautiful woman holding a bag of poop and it definitely was weird.
-
Lady's dog pooped on on my mom's lawn while I was out puffing a mommy and I pretended not to notice. After she picked it up, I walked up and told her I'd put it in our trash and thanked her for picking it up. She was hot so I slapped her on the ass as payment for my good deed.

Fairly common here, probably due to the number of super old people. Pretty much a sink with like a kitchen sprayer hose.

Free samples of beer and whiskey.
Otherwise not really, just the Costco business model but with also some Japanese products.

I wonder how big of a seller brisket and other 'que meats are. I've also wondered if there are any 'que joints in Japan and if not how successful a good one would be. Could be my retirement plan.....move to Japan and make ribs, brisket, etc.

american bbq joints are very popular in tokyo and suburbs
i spent 6 years living in downtown tokyo while i worked for the swiss government and while the sauces are quite a bit different than what we're used to here in the usa, they do a decent job recreating the american classic that we all know as, "BBQ".

there is a new american bbq shop near me started by an american and the brisket tasted like cafeteria roast beef and was served on a bed of white rice with sauce that could only have been watered down honey ketchup
-
i can recommend bashamichi taproom, tho. p good american bbq
-
in japan, "BBQ" means cooking on a charcoal grill.
I have walked into "American BBQ" restaurants and it was just a patio full of weber grills where you cooked your own mushrooms and prawns and squid and stuff.
-
How popular do you think a real BBQ place would be? Brisket, links, ribs, burnt ends, pulled pork, smoked turkey and chicken.....
-
in japan, "BBQ" means cooking on a charcoal grill.
it means that to 95% of americans too

Looking pretty gnarly, another direct hit. At least this time its not the middle of the night and I won't be trying to sleep. Hatches battened, but our house is only like 50m from Tokyo Bay so a little worried about storm surge. Our house is pretty new so I don't think it will blow over.

some team name highlights just in the kansai collegiate american football league:
Keio University Unicorns
Kansai Kaisers
Ryokoku Seahorse
Kobe Gakuin Navy Seals
Kyoto Prefectural Wyverns
Tenri Crushing Orcs
Wakayama Blind Sharks
Kyoto University Gangsters
The annual RICE BOWL pits the collegiate champion vs the PRO X-LEAGUE champion????? how sick (dope) is that??????

Members of the university's American football team, the Kyoto University Gangsters, were arrested in 2006 for gang rape, which had been recently added to the Penal Code in January 2005 following the Super Free rape controversy. The three students had forced a female university student to drink liquor to the point of unconsciousness, at which point they gang-raped her. They were all convicted.

What is Spirit of Boss
its canned coffee of some kind. Boss is Coffee Boss, the leading vending machine canned coffee brand. i think it is a new promotional flavor or maybe just a promotional can design? the sign next to it had instruction on how to win a spirit of boss baseball jacket. TLJ is the living personification of their pipe smoking gentleman logo
-
That's great. How often do you buy from vending machines? I remember them being everywhere in Tokyo
-
That's great. How often do you buy from vending machines? I remember them being everywhere in Tokyo
all the time all the time, they are literally everywhere even outside of tokyo. hot coffee can is essential in the winter to keep your hands warm.
i was actually spoiled by having vending machines everywhere that when i went back to america i almost died of dehydration.
if there was a konza prairie trail in japan it would have at least 5 vending machines on it.
i found another beer vending machine in my local area. it had some kind of fake drivers license interlock device (?) but gave me a beer just for money. I'll try to remember to post a pic when i get back to tapatalk vpn territory.
