I bet the Japanese people thank their lucky stars every day for the invention of the typewriter. That is an alphabet I can't imagine having to write by hand.

I am sure this has been covered, but isn't their alphabet really just word shapes? Then, when you write, you write words on top of words or something?

They are called kanji, that is all I know about this subject.  Hopefully someone else can fill in the gaps.

There are 3 character sets in simultaneous use at all times. Hiragana and katakana are syllabaries that each have 46 characters and cover all the sounds available to the language.

Kanji are a [redacted]. Your are illiterate until you can read 1000 or so.  Kanji are composed of any number of 216 radicals which are the basic building block kanji.  The best part is that each kanji has 2 or more pronunciations: the Chinese pronunciation and one or more Japanese pronunciations.

Schoolchildren are considered adequately literate when they know 2000 kanji.

Oh. There is also romaji, which is the official approximation of Japanese using the English alphabet.  No clue how they typewritered, but this is how the majority type on computer. They have to type in the romaji and the computer autocorrects it to Japanese characters.

kind of, evolved from pictures. sometimes there is patterns, sometimes patterns don't work. each character is a simple word and one syllable, which combines to more complicated words. an example is, dragon is 1 character. shrimp is another character. dragon + shrimp = lobster. cold + box = refrigerator, people + monster = tranny, etc. this is for chinese, dunno how the damn japs do it :curse:

I believe this is a mousetrap where the mouse is captured humanely alive in a box and then you spray the box full of motherly Aryan executioner gas.

Today I deciphered the Kanji for sashimi grade fish at the grocery store. I had been mistakenly looking for the sushi kanji all this time
