i got sling for ms tobias, its v gross on a roku at least. her internet connection isn't the fastest and it buffers all the damn time (maybe better on diff platform)

I think you have to buy separate packages for ESPN and Fox, and Fox won't have the roys anyway.

If you have a good enough internet connection (where you can watch stuff like Netflix or WatchESPN without any issues) and a nice Roku, SlingTV is a pretty good way to go. As you probably know, they have two packages that basically make you choose whether you want Fox Sports channels (most Big 12 games) or ESPN. It's really not worth getting both packages because then you're probably spending more money than you would have by bundling through your cable company. Some of the channels offered (definitely the regional Fox Sports ones) depend on where you live, so do that research as well.
Pros:
-Month to month billing (although if you prepay three months you get a free Roku 2)
-Very few streaming issues in my house
-TV options are pretty good; I think it has some on demand options as well but don't quote me on that
-I'll be honest, I only got this for Big 12 football, but it has worked well for that
Cons:
-The user interface honestly sucks. I hope they come up with something way better.
-Better value overall but still not super cheap; forces you to choose between fox sports and ESPN
-I don't think you can pause/rewind unless it's on demand

Another pro tip for all cord cutters (if you haven't already): get a nice antenna for your TV (bonus points if you can put it in your attic or near a window where it can get really good reception. The HD on digital broadcasting now is really good and even if you don't normally watch network TV you can watch plenty of good football on ABC/NBC Saturday and CBS/FOX on Sundays.

We dropped cable about 3 weeks ago. I have fire tv on three tv's and a subscription to Playstation Vue. We use their middle package at $35/mo and get multiple ESPNs(including U) as well as FS1, FSN, and other fox channels. We also get the Big 10 channel for some reason. It's been great so far.
I kept our one tivo and use it for over the air stuff the kids watch.
Saving $80/month and haven't lost anything we watch.
That all said, I haven't watched a Royals game since like June, so I don't even know if we get them or not with this set up.
This is my exact setup, I love it. Haven't missed cable at all. Plus, I would bet that FS-Midwest gets added before next Royals season.

Anyway the only con I don't like is using the x box controller to navigate the guide etc... I also like watching on my phone which is nice that I have my tv everywhere now. Thought it would be too small but really the resolution is really good.
Oh and i am running the 1 gig internet connection so no problem with streaming. The X-box phone or PC is the limiting factor in that area.

I've had SlingTv since early May. I'd give it a solid C+ grade. It's not great...the interface could use some major upgrades...and every once in awhile I have buffering issues, but it's been pretty decent. Picture quality is good.
So yeah, if you're hellbent on getting rid of cable this week, and still being able to watch the final few Royals games of the season, get the free 7 day pass and try it out.
I guess I'll keep it for awhile to see how much I use it during college football season. I tried a free trial week on Playstation Vue and thought it was a better product, but it doesn't have FSKC yet.
And, of course, if you're looking at cutting cable, be sure you know about stuff like Kodi and Firesticks etc...

I've never been that happy with the Smart TV (network card actually crapped out recently and was causing issues), but even so you'd have to check whether it has an app for SlingTV. I'm not aware that it does.

I have a friend who enjoys it overall but misses a lot of SKC games. I've watched some games there and about 1/3 of the games there is some intermittent buffering issues. Nothing too major or unwatchable, but certainly noticeable. I think his has a slight delay from my cable signal so it may effect bbsing or chatting during games.

We kept the tivo for this reason. I don't think I could live under such conditions if I had to watch sports like that.

I was just talking to a TWC guy about this yesterday and he said that TWC has such an app but that they require a min of one cable box on the bill to use it, but that it can be used anywhere via mobile devices or anything that streams. It can't be long before the box detail is dropped and we are fully out of the box rental bullshit.

Through Kodi, you can find live ESPN streams. Not a big fan of ESPN Gameday anymore, but I still tune in just to have it on in the background on Saturday AMs.
And, you could get ESPN through SlingTV. I just chose the option that gives you FSKC. It also includes Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2, and a few other sports channels.

I can't imagine paying for TV at any dollar amount that doesn't include live sports. I can get episodes of the Wire from the Library on DVD for free.You can get live sports on Kodi for free. It can be hit and miss depending on what you're looking for though.
If I'm sitting at the casa and decide I want to watch some random movie that just came out...or start binge watching some tv series that err'one is wetting their pants over...I'm not the kind of fellow that jumps in my car and heads to the local library. (which wouldn't have the newly released movies anyways)

I'm on the cusp of fully dumping cable (again) and taking advantage of Sling's 3 month pre-pay and get a Roku for 50% off deal. Of course I'm open to alternatives besides Roku.

Just knowing how those services typically work I'd be shocked if you got access to anything on FS GO that is not available on SlingTV. If you get the Blue package you still do get access to FS 1, FS 2, and at least one FS regional channel, though, and you can watch any of those on a phone, iPad, or computer, so really no reason for FS GO.

i borrowed a friend's Amazon fire stick for a couple weeks. The biggest issue for me was interface and convenience. I'm a big channel switcher, especially on Saturdays. It was extremely clunky to try and go back and forth smoothly on sling. If they can ever perfect that, i would think hard about it. I got pretty much every channel i wanted.

i borrowed a friend's Amazon fire stick for a couple weeks. The biggest issue for me was interface and convenience. I'm a big channel switcher, especially on Saturdays. It was extremely clunky to try and go back and forth smoothly on sling. If they can ever perfect that, i would think hard about it. I got pretty much every channel i wanted.
Maybe just take some ADHD medicine?

how much is too much? On Saturdays, i'm usually changing the channel every commercial break. More during the end of games.

i love the roku streaming stick a lot. the plex app is great because i can stream all the movies on my computer that i have accumulated over the years to my tv without having to do anything on the computer, which is elsewhere in the house. technology you guys

I have an OTA antenna and have used it exactly twice since I switched. Both times for chiefs games.
As mentioned in another cord cutting thread, I dl'ed the ESPN app and it works with Vue as well. So, I get the ESPN's there. Other than that, yes.

I think the availability of regional Fox Sports games on FS Go is determined by your location and possibly your cable package if you get a sports package that adds other Fox regional channels. You do have the ability to use WatchESPN or Fox Sports Go. Playstation Vue is one of the provider options when logging in. AppleJack told me he uses a couple firesticks and his PS4. It does not work with Xbox, but you can still use the HBO Now, Fox Sports Go, ESPN, etc. apps on it.
For people in the KC Area, Fox Networks channel is Fox Sports Midwest. More will be added but AJ watched Royals games on Fox Sports Go.

Suggesto: PS Vue offers a 7 day free trial. If you already have Apple TV, Fire TV, Fire Stick or Roku try it out. If not spend $40 on the Fire Stick and get weird with it.
That's my plan. I still have a couple months locked in to Cox and then I'll jump to Vue.

Now that my contract is up with Uverse and my discounts have expired, my Uverse bill is $253 this month. With PS Vue and separate internet from Google Fiber I will save $125/mo.
I was told PS Vue can have up to 5 simultaneous streams under one account. So I will no longer be getting ripped of $20/mo for extra boxes.

I just cut Cox TV and kept internet. I went with Apple TV and added PS Vue. I will get more sports channels than I had before (now will have all the ESPNs) and save $45 a month.
I really like the Apple TV format too. The remote is nice and I can use my phone as a remote if I want, also the AirPlay Mirroring from all of our iPhones and iPads is great. It was well worth spending another $50 for the device over Roku or Amazon or whatever.
Roku is definitely a bit behind in this area. Not all their fault, though. Some newer PCs and phones will let you mirror and cast over Roku now.

A guy I lived next to up here worked for TWC in the retention department. His base pay was pretty meager but he got a very nice bonus for every person he talked into staying with TWC. Somewhere in the realm of 20-30K/year in bonuses. So at least for TWC, how much they want to make depends on it as well. True, but $5 more per month gets you the ESPNs and Fox Sports channels.
vue gets you the actual logins to the individual networks as well, which is far superior for sports

I'll admit I've got Apple bias, but its a great device. I think the processor is as good or better than any other which helps. Plus, if you are used to Apple stuff the interface is the same. Worth another $20-30 over the other streaming devices. And everything I've read/heard about the sticks wasn't great, so well worth paying more for a streaming device of any type over a the USB sticks.

PS Vue, because of contract stipulations, has to limit live streaming for certain channels to whatever a user deems to be his/her "home" network. I canceled before I could test to see if a full vpn would bypass this.

I don't have a 4K tv either, but worth mentioning sense they are pretty common now. You can get a 55" 4k tv for under $500.

I've had tons of problems with Chromecast, but not that many with SlingTV. SlingTV is definitely the off-brand bargain crap product of the cord cutting world, but other than the UI the quality is fine if you stream it right.

I don't think any of those can't be had for $200 or less, and that's fine. I want whichever one is best and most current so that it'll be useful with almost anything else for after the inevitable breakup w/comcast and when I live somewhere that has access to the fasted internet pipes here.
My one that I brought from Kansas but didn't want to eff with and rented one from the old ISP people instead is a Linksys WRT400N. It was probably a character in the "fix trim's router" thread.

It's great for what it does for sure. But wireless is still a half duplex medium, so I will take full duplex copper for my backhaul whenever I can.

I purchased one Firestick mainly for this purpose after I realized I couldn't add any more profiles other than the default. The profiles for the PSVUE are really great though.

in just an absolutely shocking turn of events, psvue (at least my tier) went up by 29%
I got the email yesterday too. Going up $10, but at least we get to keep our current plan for another 3 months(at least that's how long I can keep mine). At that point I may be looking elsewhere.

I jumped to Vue from DTV Now as well. It's light years better. You might have network issues? Vue has been fantastic for me.

That said, if YouTube TV comes to my area, I'll probably switch to that.
The video stops while the audio continues. Usually after 1 minute the video will come back. Or the video and audio will skip back 10 seconds then continue. Something usually happens once an hour or two.
My internet speed isn't great, but nothing has changed this whole time. With DirecTV now i only had an issue every couple days.

I also believe they also allow/encourage something like sharing between 6 people. Like, you can even have 6 different settings and logins maybe. If you start splitting up $35/month it makes the cost of getting sports to your eyeballs next to nothing.

Any KC area cats tried YouTube TV yet?
The roomie and I have been trying it for about a month now. I like it. Works best with the latest gen chromecast. The app itself works great on my Android phone, & IOS (ipad air first-gen). I'm either using it on my Ipad for secondary games, or using either app to cast to bedroom TV or living room TV. I like the DVR function, eg, I searched in-app for Mr. Robot Season 3 episodes to be recorded, or every new The Price Is Right.
I haven't messed with the iPad to Apple TV compatibility yet. Would be a complete package for any user if it gets native Apple TV, Firestick, PS4, XBox apps. (which maybe exist?)
So far, it has performed much better than WatchESPN & FoxSportsGO for the same games.

I had PS Vue and currently have Hulu Live. I like the interface on Hulu Live much better and that you can watch most games with the Hulu app and don't have to go out and watch with Watch ESPN or Fox Sports Go. There are still a few games that I have to use the apps for; ABC games (my area doesn't have a local ABC station on Hulu) and NBC SNF to name a couple.

Yep, it’s AT&T Sportsnet out here. This is really the only gap in KSU coverage with a YTTV/ESPN+ combo. And jmarks hooks us up for those.

If you already have xfinity for internet, you should be able to get their base service and pricing list that they have to publish with the county. That makes it easier to see on one document how everything shakes out vs. their website. That list is also sitting on all the desks of the people you'd sit in front of that would do some crap and make crap dirt cheap for you. I'm not seeing it online for your county without actually being there and/or their customer.

Turn on YTTV for 3 months in the fall. Rest of year keep Prime & rotate Netflix/Hulu/Disney+ for the kids.
I get people laughing at cord cutting now, but I’m still going to come out ahead because it made me realize I don’t care about watching TV outside of KSU/Chiefs football. Even with Cats basketball I found myself streaming wyattvision while doing something even when I could watch.

does anyone know the easiest way to watch non-local CBS/FOX NFL games? I have a Youtube TV subscription and have tried the CBS All Access app with no luck.Depending on how interested you are in the out of market games, Redzone is a pretty good cheaper alternative to get in on the action.

On the Firestick remote if you tap down twice on the round navigation button it will pull up about the last 4 or 5 channels you've watched. Pretty great feature for following football games on multiple channels!
Not being able to flip channels is kind of annoying. Supposedly there are some smart TV remotes that will work with Youtube TV and allow you to flip channels but this is an absolutely basic feature that should be built into it already.

It’s a good question and I’m glad you asked it. I am under the assumption that it is a teaser rate and they will up it sometime after 12 months. It is with spectrum which I think used to be Time Warner. I get all the same channels as I did with YouTube TV for $45 a month. I don’t have DVR but I’m finding that virtually every show I watch is in a section called On Demand that is the same thing.

You get far more channel choices with cable, even more with satellite, up to 5 times more in fact, and reliability is better for cable. Not to mention that the picture quality you speak of is completely dependant on your internet speed, which unless you have fiber, isn't always reliable either.
Now YTTV is a great value for the price, but it's just that, it's a cost savings and you get what you pay for. The premium price you pay for cable gets you more channels, reliability, and better usability. Saying there's hardly a difference is kinda silly. Cord cutters have determined they can do without those differences, and that's cool, but they exist and they're stark.

I do not have satellite internet with slow speeds and data caps, I did like three years ago though, so I know that side of cord cutting more than people who have lived in urban settings for a long time.
I'm probably much more aware of the differences between cable/satellite and streaming services because I recently convinced myself to switch but after doing extensive research I decided not to. I personally don't have an issue with cord cutting and streaming services, but I reject that it is a similar product to cable and satellite, it's a cheaper alternative for those willing to sacrifice an extended channel line up and an unquestionably better reliability.
We didn't end up switching because after looking at what channels we watch as five television watching people, we all would have to either stop watching things we like or we would have to supplement with network streaming services and cutting into the primary draw of cord cutting which is the price difference. It also doesn't help that I know the carriage issues of these services, particularly YTTV would be problematic for me. Every single Sporting Kansas City tweet is ruined by crybaby cord cutters who can't watch the matches and they think that whining about it to SKC and the league in every tweet will change it, as if the team doesn't want every person in the world to watch their matches.
Cable and satellite had a 35 year head start on streaming services. I'm sure they will close the gap and will do it very quickly, but they haven't yet. I love K-State and the Big 12, but those things aren't LSU and the SEC, and that's okay. I get the motivation from cord cutters to say streaming is the same thing but it just isn't yet, doesn't make streaming bad, it's actually a very good alternative.

I laughed at three idea that they are "essentially the same thing." I have no problem with streaming services, that's silly, they don't take my money. I stream live TV from my provider all of the time, it's provided at no additional charge.
I will continue to laugh at cord cutting fanbois who act like they discovered the Rosetta Stone but then are constantly crying about what they don't have. My guess is that this is very specific to cord cutting sports fans, but it's annoying a.f.

These aren't issues with cable or satellite, don't get me wrong, they used to be. I'm old enough to remember when these technologies were new and cable and satellite used to be down all of the time. However, like I said, streaming services just haven't had the time to catch up with reliability but they will and it won't take anything close to the 30 years it took for cable and satellite. They've even improved reliability in bad weather. We just had the 5th slowest winter in Iowa history and we didn't lose signal once, same thing for two different tornado warnings last summer.

yep, I didn't do it to say money. I did it to save from having shitty boxes on every tv, being charged for each box, having my rate double every couple of years then having to call and threaten cancel, then getting a different rate, then having to switch because they won't give me that rate anymore, then getting new boxes, then doing the same thing with the new company and then having to switch back to the old company that will now give me a decent rate again because I'm a new customer. I'll never go back to that again if I can help it. I love YTTV and have had zero issues with it. This contract dispute with Sinclair is annoying, but no way will it drive me back to cable guy land.

Yep, they have dug in and the only streaming service they are on is ATTV. They made it through NBA season without at deal and appear to be not budging with MLB upcoming. I've been trying to figure out what my Royals plan is this year. Probably going to try and stream what I can. Its crazy how hard it is to watch baseball when they basically inventing sports streaming/viewing games online.

LOL, that has nothing to do with the MLB, they can't help who purchased those RSNs. Aren't you a Cubs fan? They were the first baseball team to partner with Sinclair, which is Bally's Sports, for their local package. Marquee Sports Network is just Bally's but without the gambling component, aka the only good thing about having Sinclair broadcast your games.

I think a lot of the big network ones get resolved, or at least they used to. The sports networks are the ones that carry on or just get dropped. It is interesting now that everyone has their own streaming option now though. The providers have def lost some leverage as the networks and still get eyeballs by people switching to the streaming service if they are dropped from a platform.

This isn't a matter of whether or not YTTV is going anywhere or not, every single provider has carriage disputes, literally every one. And yes, YTTV has had other carriage disputes, in fact they are involved in one of the most notorious carriage disputes of all time currently with Sinclair/Bally Sports. This is one of them I had in mind when I mentioned disputes that may never be resolved.
I don't know if it was ever resolved but YTTV and Roku were involved in a carriage dispute as well.
Streaming services will be more susceptible than linear television to these carriage disputes because these huge media companies are turning their streaming services into competitors of the streaming giants like YTTV, Hulu, and Sling.
Comcast is being unreasonable with their demand for a reason. Peacock has 49 channels of their own, including live local streaming and exclusive deals with some leagues. Paramount doesn't have as many channels but they also have streaming of local CBS programming and they have the entertainment channels that get the largest subscriber fees from the non sports and news channels, MTV, A&E, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and BET.
Basically the bigger these media conglomerates get the worst it is for all consumers because they are all going to be comfortable with running to their own corners and reaching into their pockets themselves instead through an intermediary which was the linear cable/satellite companies.
You people who wanted a la carte are getting your wish and it blows.

Cox are the goats with these carriage negotiations. As far as I can tell they've only lost programming twice both were with deals with local broadcasting conglomerates and both were for less than a week. They had a dispute with Nextstar, notorious jackasses to deal with, they've had disputes with everyone. Anyway Cox lost those stations for 4 days back in 2016. Cox lost Hearst Communications local channels for 1 day in 2017.
Comcast have had plenty, it's just crap you don't watch. They seem to really draw the line with regional sports networks. They lost the YES Network for 2 years '17-'19. They currently have been in a dispute with BeIn Sports for three years running now, Altitude currently for two. Comcast, because presumably they are so big, gets sued by networks and their owners, a lot, Comcast always win, but they do get taken to court about these disputes quite a bit. They had a dispute with the tennis channel that went to the supreme court, but they elected not to hear that case.

4k came down to $9.99 from $19.99. i only get the 4k when cats football are selected. probably the big reason for getting 4k package is the unlimited streams.

Mrs SF does watch the local news sometimes so I’d like to get the local channels in my bedroom at least but she won’t want to see an ugly ass antenna.Don't a lot of local stations have Roku channels that stream their broadcasts? I think as long as you have espn+ and access to the espn cable channels you are covered. I think anytime we are on Fox it's all OTA.we're on FS1 quite a bit but generally any package that has ESPNU would also have FS1

I signed up for YouTubeTV after using Hulu+ Live for the 2022-23 KSU sports seasons and I'm liking it a lot better so far. The app feels more similar to the way "cable" used to work. No freezing or buffering issues experienced during several hours of watching the Cat football game and the US Open.
This is why I like it. The AppleTV remote is wonderful as well

I'm sure it will come, but I wish I could also just get 2 games. 4 is a bit much to keep track of and the boxes are too small for me. Being able to flip back and forth between 2 that you can choose is the sweet spot for me.

Sure you can. When you open yttv desktop app, just open another.
