Title: Best thing you've bought recently
Post by: stunted on July 05, 2021, 11:55:21 AM
I bought one of those aroma humidifier things - it's so good. Smells stronger than candles and now my room smells like a spa. What's the best thing you've bought recently?

we wash an absolute crap load of water bottles for ourselves and the kids. I hate squirting the soap into them each every day to clean them and I bought this pumper on a whim and it has dramatically improved my quality of life just being able to hit the pump thing to squirt some in each bottle.

I bought some of those solar lights from Costco to light up our little brick walkway into our house.  I thought they’d be kind of shitty and not really stay on at night very long, but those things work astonishingly well and work great.

Was looking at these. Can you turn them off or do they stay on all the time?

Bought a small Ice Mule cooler bag thingy. Needed a smallish cooler for kid events and to hide beers in at the pool. Only a few uses in, but I like it so far.

They turn off when it's light enough and turn on when it's dark enough.

I bought a new grill. Nothing fancy. Just your average $300 4-burner. So nice to cook outside in the summer.

My wife bought an "ice cream spade."  it's like a scooper, but has a sharp flatter end to it, and it won't bend.  That rough rider can dig through any type of ice cream.  This isn't the one she bought, but it's similar.

Started doing this a few years ago. So nice. Have gone to the brown tint. Can drive well past sunset with them to avoid the headlight glare. When you get over 45, you'll start griping about bright lights that aren't on high beam.

I love to sit in a sauna, especially in fall/winter. I put on some soft jams, close my eyes, and then just sweat it out for 20-30. It feels great. Pandemic killed that so I bought one of those 2 people Costco saunas. I had pretty low expectations, but figured I would give it a shot since you can return anything to Costco. Its amazing. Now I can sweat out my rage in the comfort of my own home.

Our local bank gave those away one year for the annual open house. You could dish up huge bowlfuls of ice cream from the 5QT bucket and then douse it with hershey chocolate syrup. Probably 20% of the calories I took in between age 8 and 18 came in this form.

Inside one or outside one?  If inside, how are you controlling for extra heat and humidity?

My folks had a give away ice cream scoop similar to that.  I ended up with it after they passed, and I still use it for frozen hard ice cream.

Man, a sauna is one hell of a contribution to this thread. A freaking SAUNA! Wow!

Do you just preheat it like an oven? How long does that take? Does it have rocks or fake rocks that you can pour water on for steam?

Inside infrared sauna thingy. Saunas are dry heat, steam rooms are steamy. I prefer the dry heat. It heats up pretty quick. I can hop in and be toasty within 20 minutes or so. I think I have this one.

No rocks. I think the rock ones are like the old school steamy ones. Mine is dry infrared so it just heats up. Takes about 20 minutes to get up to 120ish. I think it maxes out around 135 or so.

supposedly tons of health benefits from them. I love it. Some times I can really get in a zone and after like 30 minutes I feel about as good as possible. That is the other best part about having one at home. I used to go to the gym and I would get there, turn on my sauna jams, get relaxed........then 3 cackling bad person ladies would come in and talk and laugh the whole time. My rage would build up to the point where I had to leave because it was defeating the purpose.

I'm looking to replace my electric razor. Currently have a Braun series 3 but it got dropped and the pop up trimmer snapped off. Thinking about just going back with the current series 3 shaver. Are there any (foil-type) electric razors that would be a big upgrade (in terms of shave quality, not price) that gE posters would recommend?

4 giant bags of salad. I decided I was transitioning to a lunch salad guy. have been putting together these massive chef salads the last few days. egg, ham or salami, olives sometimes, blue cheese sometimes, like 2 minutes of cranking on the pepper mill, massive amounts of full fat salad dressing. just gigantic things to behold. probably about 1,500 calories a piece. but, folks, they are good.

i bought this awning thing (stock photo below) right before my trip to moab & colorado, and it vastly exceeded my expectations. it's kind of a must for desert camping, and also it's nice to hang out under it when it's raining. it also takes less than 2 minutes to set up and take down (faster than a standalone canopy), and it's easily adjustable to account for sun angle or wind or whatever. plenty of room to set up a camp kitchen at one end and still have room for a few chairs underneath the awning. what sent it over the top is there is a dimmable LED strip for cooking & cleaning up in the dark, or just to have a soft nightlight.
5 stars

mounting is kind of up to you. i got the quick release hooks and attached them to my cross bars with hose clamps from o'reilly

i bought this awning thing (stock photo below) right before my trip to moab & colorado, and it vastly exceeded my expectations. it's kind of a must for desert camping, and also it's nice to hang out under it when it's raining. it also takes less than 2 minutes to set up and take down (faster than a standalone canopy), and it's easily adjustable to account for sun angle or wind or whatever. plenty of room to set up a camp kitchen at one end and still have room for a few chairs underneath the awning. what sent it over the top is there is a dimmable LED strip for cooking & cleaning up in the dark, or just to have a soft nightlight.
5 stars

A few years ago, I got this Kelty tarp for making shade at the beach but the anchors that came with it didn't hold in a sandy substrate. Got these new anchors that screw into wet sand off of Amazon and we enjoyed the crap out of the tarp at the beach this year.

Sort of like this but I just used two poles:

I'm looking to replace my electric razor. Currently have a Braun series 3 but it got dropped and the pop up trimmer snapped off. Thinking about just going back with the current series 3 shaver. Are there any (foil-type) electric razors that would be a big upgrade (in terms of shave quality, not price) that gE posters would recommend?
Went with the new series 3 model. Started using shave gel with the electric razor. I'm enjoying the crap out of it.

Whats the point of using an electric then?
I have a series 7 that I'm either going to need to buy a new head or just get a new one. Costco had the series 8 like $50 off a couple weeks ago and I regret not grabbing it.

Personally, I get much less razor burn with an electric vs a cartridge razor. Much cheaper than buying razor cartridges over the life of an electric. I have to replace the disposable razors pretty frequently or I get bad razor burn.

Something like this. I've had it for nearly twenty years. So not exact model. I cannot use it mounted in my current shower as it mounts too high for my current vision.

Getting high quality parm from whole foods Amazon delivery is also a great purchase.

Also the razor talk got me thinking about my beard trimmer. I think I found a review on Wirecutter that named the battery powered version of this the best but was like "plug in is more reliable and lasts longer and performs better but people prefer battery power so we think the battery one is the best" and they are wrong- get the plug in version. Fantastic purchase

I've had gas chainsaws in the past and they were always a pain to get started.  This thing is perfect for my needs.  I'm not felling any large trees, just mostly routine tree trimming, or disposing of fallen limbs and stuff like that.  But so far it seems this thing wouldn't have much trouble with larger jobs as well.  After my initial hesitancy I've been buying more and more electric outdoor tools including a string trimmer, hedge trimmer and blower.  I love them all and I don't foresee ever going back to gas unless I get a much larger property that requires longer run times.  I bought a push mower last year and now I wish I'd had the balls to go electric on that too.

Nice, i've started doing this too. I should have stuck with the same brand though. I have the black and decker chainsaw and small weed whacker. The chainsaw is great but the whacker is just ok. They both use the same batteries though, so that's nice. I also have a Stihl leaf blower and it is incred. Stihl is pricey, but this thing blows the concrete off my patio. I'm considering the Ryiobi riding mower. Its a pretty big investment though. I've heard its great, but the issue is there aren't a lot of places that work on them when you do have an issue.

Yep I have the same issue.  My weed whacker, blower and electric drill are all 20v craftsman that use the same battery.  My hedge trimmer is a Kobalt and now my chainsaw is a Ryobi.  I bought the Ryobi because I really wanted a 14 inch and the Craftsman electric saws didn't get great reviews.  Kobalt hedge trimmer was a gift.  It's nice but I would have bought a 20v Craftsman hedge trimmer if given the choice.

These are great for sitting on the couch or your favorite football watching chair and stuffing your face with some Cap'n Crunch.  They really shine with hot soup or chili. Too hot to handle?  No sir! I've got something handy(lol) to hold onto that keeps my daddles from feeling the burn.

looked online, they look really great. walmart is a step below, more of a value pick. i'd say wal-mart would be the go-to for regular steaks, booth when you want to treat yo self or others. and then japanese a5 for really special occasions.

A couple of weeks ago, our neighbor invited us to a place that they have outside of town to pick apples and then loaned us their apple/corer slicer. We set up the camping stove in the backyard to make applesauce and pie filling. Kids absolutely loved it. The corer/slicer is a really cool gadget.

I got an EGO battery powered lawn mower a while back, and I absolutely love the thing. Never any problems starting it, you can use the self-propelling motor without turning on the blade motor. It's relatively quiet. It has plenty of power. No need to worry about winterizing it, or maintenance. We have 1/3 acre and it can mow the yard on a single charge.

I want to go see because outside of mowing over a billion whiffle balls and small children and whatnot it seems like a no brainer. AND one of my neighbors has a remote controlled one like from Honey I Shrunk The Kids and it even looks like it's a homemade thing because it is not, like, sleek looking. I'll try to grab a pic of it sometime. the kid is always in the driveway driving it around the grass.

Report back on this. I've been looking at the Husqvarna one. I think its like 3k. My issue is that I would either need two of them or I would have to move it front to back somehow. I'm either going to buy one of those or the electric rider from Ryobi.

Watching Leaving Las Vegas is pretty effective for me in terms of reducing or outright eliminating the desire to drink for a day or so.

How does this model compare to the mini?

i think you can press harder with it before the motor starts to stutter. also has more attachments. but the mini is plenty powerful and i use it without the attachment to really eff my muscles up.

I got one on Black Friday and it's large, but it's great on my torn rodder cuff.  I can recline in my chair and let it pound on top of my shoulder and just let it balance against my neck and the back of the chair.  It's heavy enough to do a good job and relieve pain.

I got some LL Bean ones a while back that have a bit of a sole on them. I love them. They are comfy and if I need to run outside really quick, they have a decent sole to protect my piggies.

Way behind on this but we finally got a robot vac. We got a "dumb" one that just goes wherever until it bumps in to crap. It works surprisingly good. We got the Anker one that was like $200. Would def recommend if you have a pet. Also, fired up the sauna for the first time since spring and it was amaze.

I work downstairs and just let it bump around until it gets stuck somewhere. I know the places it gets stuck by now and just block them off. He just drives around and then goes back to the charger when the battery gets low. Its not perfect by any means, but helps keep up with the dust and hair from the doggie.

I have been looking at the lawn mower ones for a couple of years but can't pull the trigger. I was taking the dog for a walk a few weeks ago and saw one in action for the first time. It was super quiet. I had read that you could run them at night but was skeptical. After hearing it, you could def do that without bothering anyone. It was really cool. I really wanted to knock on the door and ask the people about it, but Mrs SF called me a weirdo.

that is where I am with it. Mrs SF doesn't think it will cut that good, but my counter is that I will just run it every day so it will be fine. I have a pretty big yard though and it is essentially 3 sections. Front, side, and back. So I would have to move it around, which I think would work, but I have no idea. I assume I can just fence off each section and just throw it in there whenever.  :dunno:

I wonder if you can program it to cut in different directions/designs. Diagonal cut one week/vertical or horizontal the next...maybe some sweet baseball diamond looking cuts

We spent a lot of money on an iRobot Roomba and it's rough ridin' awful. Gets stuck in inexplicable places, hardly ever finds it's base, no discernable reasoning to where it goes, spend a ton of time in low traffic areas. I hate it and I want to replace it but I now think they are all terrible, and not intuitive, so I don't want to waste my time or money on another one.

That is why I didn't spend $500 on a fancy one. I got the Eufy one that is made by Anker. It was like $150 and does some of those things that you described above but for $150 its turned out to be worth it. Currently banging around upstairs right now.

I bought a new professional ninja food processor thing and it's awesome. It came with the normal big container and a another dough mixer wide body bowl thing. It also came with 2 single serve shake size containers that I've been making the crap out of doing smoothies in the morning. It's just a monster and blends everything with ease.

I can't stand PBR, just some syrup and carbonation. Natty light with more corn and hops.

For dive bar beers its either Busch Light (nationwide) or Rolling Rock/some random regional beer like Hamms/Rainer/Yuenling etc.

Talked to a business acquaintance the other day and since he was working out of Washington I had asked him about Rainer beer.  I told him when I was stationed at Ft. Lewis in the seventies the most popular beer was Rainer.  He was a gen x and knew about Rainer's history and told me they had gone under in the early '90s.  He agreed Rainer was very tasty and popular in the '70s and '80s, but for some reason, ppl quit drinking it by the '90s.  He did say they started up again and are gaining popularity.  It was my favorite beer back then and would love to get a case if any place carried it.  Plz. let me know if any place around Topeka, Manhatten, Lawrence, or the KC area carries it.

Theragun and Oofos Slides, both have helped me a great deal with recovery.

Don't lie. The first one is for the wife.

Spracne, no!

They have a frightening attachment that looks like this, and whatever it's for hasn't come up on the app yet.

That's the British Petroleum (BP) attachment. Alas, I know it well.
Does it also come with a romantic first attachment?

Hamm's is pretty good

how do we feel about PBR? Highlife is my go to dive bar beer, but PBR is a pretty close second.

Longmire drank Rainer beer.  I also just bootlegged a case of it back from Wyoming for a friend in KC.

I take it that it's not available anywhere around here.  Trim, is this your favorite beer?  It was mine back then.

Yes.  It's more than adequate, and it's something any bar I'd be going to has plenty of and that the bartenders appreciate when we keep it simple.  Everyone who visits finds it great and pounds them the whole time too.  I have the fancy new fridge with the glass on the easy access side door and I set mine up to where what you see when you knock is 12ozs on top and 16ozs in the middle; picking up the 24ozs for the bottom next time I'm at the store that has them.

Costco sells a 30-pak of smalls for like $20.

I was hoping to post how awesome Lil' SFs bday present was today, but Fed Ex lost it. Like, I got him a full size arcade machine and its currently lost. Birthday delayed again lil bud. I got him the new release of NFL Blitz 99/00 and I am going to destroy him every game until he decides he doesn't want to play with me anymore. Will post back if they ever find it.

Nice! My buddy has an old golden tee from like 2000 that he bought at Costco I think.

One day when I stop being cheap I'm gonna Yolo and get a golden tee, NBA jam and blitz arcade machine for my basement.

Throw a foosball table down there and I may never leave.

That is going be my exact setup. These new release games are surprisingly nice so I'm going to get NBA Jam at some point soon. I may try and find a bar Golden Tee though. The Arcade 1UP Golden Tee is like the very first one I think, so I may try and find a newer bar version depending on the cost.

I got one last year, it's pretty sexy

One thing I got a few months ago was the LG washstation tower, and eff, laundry is somewhat fun now, I love it, probably needs to x-post with signs of getting old thread

I wanted a bosch dishwasher but there was no way to get one within any reasonable time period.  Got the LG that matches the rest of the new LG kitchen applicances.

Also got that LG washtower.  For that and all the kitchen appliances, I just know how to do the basic function of washing/cooking.  I have an inch or two of user manuals to read when it's not summer anymore.

Also still have NBA Jam that I bought last halloween in its box awaiting me to reorganize my place and make a space for it also once it's not better to be outside.

Dishwasher - I was also insisting on a black 500 or 800, it wasn’t happening.

NBA JAM - I wanted it at the outset but didn’t think it’d fit, once renovation was near I saw it could and bought it but it’s never been taken out of the box.

The last order I added a shepherd hook (aka cane) like we used to sort cattle.

I have had these for a while but if you are like me and get sweaty when working out I can't recommend these towels enough. They roll up and have a little strap and fit in my pocket perfectly and are great for using between games of pickup or during and after my crossfitbro workout. I can honestly use them more than one day and they won't stink. AMAZING:

Rawlings R9 Contour Fit Catcher's Mitt. If you have a catcher in the 7U-10U age range this is basically the only glove I've found that's worth a crap for those small kids. every grade school kid mitt we've ever used lasted about a half season before falling apart. We're going into season 2 with this thing and it seems like it may have an entire year left in it.

Has a dock to self clean out the vacuum along with sucking well. Has two mop heads on the back that spin that perform really well. The dock also self cleans the mop heads and refills the water. It's the only one I've had that actually mops well. I can take a paper towel to the floor after and get no dirt.

Also Roborocks are super smart mapping wise so can just clean one room and it precisely cleans that room.

so it doesn't immediately go to the only 2 spots in your house where it will get stuck like all of the rest of them do?

I can't remember where I left this but I got a Robrorock Revo Q middle of last year and still absolutely loving it. I haven't done much research since then so maybe they've upgraded? I'd definitely stick with RoboRock. I have another buddy more into them than I am and he is switching all over to RR. The revo Q cleans hardwood great and is super smart to not get rugs wet for example. My affiliate link full disclosure.

EcoFlow River 2 Pro just ran my tailgate (TV and cell phone charging as a hotspot). Said it would run 16 hours under that load. It also is strong enough to run my full sized freezer. Says 6 hours but that's when compressor is running so guessing like double that.

Now looking to add some solar panels to run it indefinitely if needed. I know nothing about good/bad panels.

Been researching these things forever and haven't pulled the trigger. I've been looking at Jackery. We lose power all the freaking time and get it back on last. I'm actually looking at a whole house, but have thought about getting a batter power generator to supplement my little gas one if the whole house one falls through. It would be nice to have one I can use inside the house while the gas one runs outside.

yeah I don't lose power much so wanted a very portable one but big enough to help out an appliance or two if it came to it. I'm happy with it. Yeah can go nuts looking at all the brands and sizing.

I bought a reusable disposable-type of camera and it’s been a lot of fun to take out and mess with. Pictures look nostalgic and more in the moment. The shittiness of the image quality is a vibe. Also fun waiting for pictures to be developed. Have since bought a decent film camera from 1982 that I’m excited to try out.

One of my kids has an app that will take pictures and then "develop" them later. They come out looking like they were taken in the 90's -- even have a time stamp on the bottom. She got some really cool ones on vacation last summer with it.

I have my dad's old film camera (Canon FTb) and it is really fun to use. If you like color photography, I would recommend getting your hands on some Kodak Porta 400 film. If you prefer B/W Kodak Tri-X 400 is fun to use. I've enjoyed messing around with using it in lower light conditions and asking the photo lab to "push" the exposure. (apologies if you already knew all of that....) Which film camera do you have?

What do you like about the porta 400? I just got Kodak gold 200, was worried about things getting blown out with 400, but I won’t be shooting in direct sunny conditions I don’t think. I only know a few photography basics right now.

The camera I got is a Pentax pc35afm, it’s 35mm and f2.8. I like how it’s point and shoot and the thing looks very very 80s. The other basic camera I have is a Kodak h35n, the cool thing about it is it takes half frames so a roll gets 72 shots without losing much resolution. Perfect for beginners like me.

I feel like the 400 speed film just gives more flexibility with varying light conditions. I like the old times look it gives. The half frame camera sounds very cool. I’ve read about them but never used one. Where do you get your film developed? I’ve used a place called The Darkroom in California. Haven’t shot any film for a couple of years now.

9k. They will sell it for less if you plan it right but this is delayed from Christmas last year. I am though already in the worth it camp and I have had it for 10 months so far. It's timeless and comfy and I'll cherish it for literally decades to come. GF is equally impressed with it.

Just got a tankless hot water heater two weeks ago. It is a beast. Fights about who is using up all the hot water have ended.
The water heater was flashing an error message last week so the plumbers came to investigate. Turns out it had sprung an internal leak that was dripping on some of the controls. The whole thing was under warranty we are back to limitless hot water.

I took my mower (Husqvarna purchased the day that the Cats beat OU in 2012) to the local handyman who services it for me yesterday. He told me "I know how important it is for you to get away from the stresses of life and just focus on the lawn -- I'll have this thing fixed for you in no time." It felt like talking to the wise neighbor from Home Improvement.

I bought a zero-turn mower this spring.  It looks rough and won't start.  Home Depot got their in-house service man to fix it.  He did the job first thing the next morning.  He said that he cleaned the carburetor and drained the gas.  He told me it set outside all of the fall/winter season and that was a common problem.  I used it a couple of times this spring and summer.  Tried to start it a couple of weeks ago and it won't run correctly.  Was told by a local mechanic that it was a fuel problem and not warranted.  I put unleaded in it instead of non-ethanol high-octane fuel so my 4 yr warranty is useless without using 91/94 octane gas.

Possibly crap, definitely rip-off.  Can't imagine those booze drink K-Cups are any better than the pre-mixed cocktail things you can get in the can at the liquor store, nor would they be cheap enough to offset the cost of the liquor Keurig in the first place...and they definitely are not as environmentally friendly as the pre mixed drinks in a can or the best option, mixing your own damn drinks.

Good call Phil.  I found a refurb for about $350 on ebay from the manufacturer.  This is significantly quieter than my old one.  Moves in an organized pattern and seamlessly switches from mop to vac on rugs.

I bought a Breville Oracle Touch last month and it makes fantastic espresso.  Just like a really good coffee shop.

Now I am buying various delish local roaster beans and trying them all out.  This thing makes wonderful espresso.

Can you sleep OK if you have caffeine late in the day? I have always wanted be someone who had a nice coffee at the conclusion of dinner, but it really messes with my sleep.

I have two super powers:
1. I have never had a hangover regardless of how hard I have tried
2. I can fall asleep within mere minutes regardless of where I am or what time it is.  That said, I rest a lot better when I have my last coffee by no later than 2pm.  I notice a big difference in quality of sleep when I break the 2pm rule.

I think I heard that people with ADHD can sleep like a charm with caffeine.

I just got a Sonicare toothbrush. Don't know why I held off so long, it's amazing! Feels cleaner than the dentist, every day
