Do you like it, do you not?
And if you like it, what do you prefer?
If not, what's your caffeine vehicle?
'clams, has caffeine gone the way of sodium for you?
Myself, I've been a fan since I was 14. Folgers 100% Colombian is my everyday choice. Starbucks Sumatra is my "parents stopping by, look at my refined taste" coffee of choice.
-
love it black.
can't drink it with anxiety meds.
-
Coffee tastes awful, just terrible.
Pepsi is my caffeine vehicle, cause yanno, it tastes good.
-
'clams, has caffeine gone the way of sodium for you?
actually it has. I quit drinking any caffeinated beverages ~4 years ago.
at the same time I quit caffeine, I quit any/all soda. one exception is that i love San Pellegrino, which is carbonated mineral water.
-
Don't like coffee and want to remove all caffine but not as disiplined and clams I drink Mt Dew of caffine.
Like said above it tastes good and stuff. Lots of sugar and bad for you but can't give up the taste. Working on it.
-
If you have Alzheimers in you family I would recommend drinking coffee
-
big time source of antioxidants.
-
I take my coffee like I take my women: Black and strong :surprised:
I go with the Folgers Gourmet Supreme, the one that has the darkness meter cranked up to 11. Really need some caffeine to get moving in the morning sometimes. Starbucks is delicious too but for the price of one Stabucks, I can get a container of Folgers that lasts me about a month.
-
I have a coffee grinder, so yeah you could say I like to drink coffee. I like sumatra, organic colombian or other single source whole bean coffees.
-

I don't really like coffee, but i drink it sometimes just to fit in.

The Rosterie(sp): Organic Sumatra. Grind at home and make in a french press.
I dont drink pop very often. Coffee with very minimal sugar.

I see what you did there

caffeine...the fakest drug in the entire world. people are so blinded by the misconception that caffeine gives you energy. it doesn't. if it did, why aren't marathon runners chugging coffee throughout the 26 mile race instead of drinking water? the simple answer is because it doesn't give you energy. it might make you think you're more productive but in reality you're not.
if you do caffeine, you're a joke.

More of an instant cappuccino fan. Sometimes I'll have some coffee with cream and sugar, but I'm not crazy for it. Don't drink for anything other than the taste.

I bet you're one of those dorks who fills his mug at work up with the hot water from the coffee machine in the break room for your trendy non-caffeinated Asian tea.

Agree 100% but it is addictive. Trying to get through the withdrawl is tough, as with any drug I guess.

i don't drink decaffeinated asian tea. or any hot drinks. sorry to ruin your wet dream. i will point out though that drinking trendy non-caffeinated asian tea makes more sense than drinking coffee.

Any one who drinks Folgers can GTFOOMF.
Nothing wrong with folgers to keep my coffee budget from exceeding the GDP of Ghana. Atleast it's not Sanka.
Also, anyone who drinks their coffee with a pound of sugar and a gallon of creamer, but won't get a latte at starbucks because of the fat/calories is pure stupid.
-
I drink it in the mornings because it's free at work.
-
coffee is fantastic for your health and i love it :gocho:

On sixth cup of coffee today. Probably won't brew any when I get home. Maybe, but probably not.
If you tell your doctor about how much coffee you drink, and he says, "Uh, we'll put between 3-5 cups a day" in your chart to make him look like he's not negligent, does that mean you drink too much?

Probably not. The thing about espresso machines is that they need repaired constantly. With in-home espresso machines, no one would be able to do that. It would work fine for a while, but I'd give it 4 months before you'd have to buy a new one.

While not truly espresso, moka style isn't a bad alternative. Usually have some (or french pressed) with steamed/frothed milk at home every morning. Bold rich flavors, you guys. Is she drinking actual/traditional esspresso, or just using it to mix into something like a iced mocha carmel vanilla skinny soy latte? If the latter, just get a cheap one and use a good esspresso bean and by the time she mixes in all the other crap, the diff will not be noticeable.

You hayseeds really suck at talking coffee. Not too surprised though, most of you probably think a Macanudo is a good cigar too. While you guys are choking down your folgers tomorrow I'll be grinding up some freshly roasted Kenyan peaberry.

All really good stuff, especially the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. Where do you get your beans and how do you brew?

I get whole beans at a local coffee shop and gind them at home, usually for a french press.

Coffee snobs are the worst, just the absolute worst.

Whole beans and french press is definitely the way to go, that's how I make mine everyday.
I used to buy green beans and roast them myself which was a good way to learn about everything, but I don't get around to doing it anymore. I've had varying amounts of luck with local shop beans. You might want to check out gocoffeego.com, that's what I use now and it's amazing. My latest batch was roasted on Sept. 26th and got to my door the 28th with free shipping. PT's coffee from Topeka is one of the best roasters in the country and they are currently included in the weekly free shipping special in case you want to give it a shot.

What are you thoughts on washing your coffee cup? I haven't washed mine in 6 months and it has developed a fine petina. I like to think of it like seasoning a cast iron skillet. People at work seem to be evenly split between thinking this is normal and thinking this is disgusting.

I rinse mine every day after drinking coffee and then take it home on the weekends and run it through the machine. I'm prolly #teamdisgusting but I'm kind of weird about cleanliness.

That gocoffeego.com is really expensive. What justifies charging at least twice as much as whole beans from a grocery store? Is the flavor really worth it?

i'll give everybody one guess as to who needs to spend more time taking care of their yard so their neighbors don't get grossed out when they drive by and less time in the kitchen roasting their own coffee beans so that they can then grind them and put them into a french press. :flush:

In my opinion it is, but it also depends on how you make it. If you're throwing it in a $20 coffeemate drip machine, you probably wouldn't notice as much difference between the two. You could make it in a $20 french press though and notice a big difference. I wouldn't buy any coffee that I didn't know when it was roasted. If they don't tell you, it's probably long past stale.
I used to drink a lot of coffee everyday but I decided I'd rather make one really good large cup instead so the extra cost isn't a big deal. A few weeks ago I tried some of the Klatch coffee on there for 11.95/12oz. and it was solid, is that still twice as much as the store? (serious question)

I have used one. It's surprisingly pretty good for the price. Kind of the same method as a french press but instead of letting the water and grounds soak together for a few minutes you press the water out almost immediately. I'm not a huge espresso fan but it's probably worth a shot if that's what you're into.

Roger the barber came down last night to teach me how to change my own sprinkler heads so my system isn't down all the time waiting for blueville to come over. I told him I had some weird yard stalker that was intimidating me into improving my lawn and he understood. Give it two more weeks and it will be a thing of beauty.

Yeah, that's probably double per ounce of a few whole-bean options at the store. I may try it some time. Would grocery store beans w/ a french press be a heck of a lot better than w/ a cheap ass drip machine?
-

No, you were right, my yard sucked. Is Jarod his son? We usually talk about the Cats or yard/neighborhood stuff. I googled his name and if it is his son, it looks like he's pretty successful.

Thats a really good question. By the time I started with the french press I was already using the premium beans and I've never used them in my drip machine so my answer would be a total guess. If you'd like my guess, it would be that yes, it would be a good jump up in quality with a french press. You could start with something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Bodum-1548-01US-1-liter-34-Ounce-Coffeemaker/dp/B000KEM4TQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317415271&sr=8-1
Then you just need an electric kettle to boil the water (I really don't recommend microwaving it.) If you end up getting one I'll let you know the steps to make it correctly. It takes about 6 minutes to make it from the time when you start boiling the water so keep that in mind.

Shitty drip machines can make even bad coffee worse, so they can for sure ruin good coffee.
Disclaimer: I drink shitty drip coffee all day long. (Mr. Coffee, Folger's Black Silk :kstategrad:)

Not really. Just as easy as regular coffee, if not easier.
-
that french press stuff has always interested me but i'm just too lazy. i mean six minutes and you have to like do stuff? i don't know.
For people that are interested, here's my method.
1. Put water in the kettle to start boiling
2. While the water is boiling I grind my beans and put them in the press
3. When the water comes to a boil I turn it off and wait about 30 seconds for the water to cool a little bit.
4. Pour the water in the press and wait 1 minute before putting the top on
5. After the top is on I wait another 3:30 until I press down the plunger and pour my coffee.
This is a little more complicated than some people make it. A lot of people just wait for the boil then pour it in with the coffee for 4-5 minutes. What I do is set 5:00 on my microwaves kitchen timer and start it when I turn off the boiling water. At 4:30 pour the water in the press, 3:30 put the top on, and when it beeps it's ready. Pretty easy.
Makes for a nice break in the middle of the day, but if you drink a ton of coffee it could get a little annoying.

thanks for the info. ms. tobias decided to break my coffee machine this morning, so i decided to take the plunge and go grab a french press this morning. i'm not really a coffee snob and am pretty lazy, but this irish coffee is :drink:
-
Forgot to mention that I give the coffee a few stirs at 1 minute before I put the top on (add to step 4).
Did you give it a shot already Tobias? If so, did you taste the difference? Another thing to remember is when using a french press, there will usually be about one drink left in the bottom of your mug where the finer grounds have collected. Can be a weird surprise if you're not used to it.
-
i did stir, but more or less right after adding the water. granted i don't drink much coffee on the weekend (drink a boatload of the cheap stuff at work during the week) but i enjoyed my first go at it.
i'll be sure to give it a whirl in the morning when i'm less pak'd. i did notice a small amount of the finer grounds at the bottom but it didn't throw me off as i'm used to it from oversteeped tea.
thanks to you and ladyfriend for motivation

French perfection:
1. Read reccomended ratio of coffee to water from producer
2. Get water in measure cu and micro for approx 2 min
3. Grind beans while micro'ing water
4. Put beans and water in press immediately
5. Stirr immediately and put top on
6. 3.5 min, then slowly press and pour
7. Drink and wonder why you have ever done it any other way
Easy, quick, minimal clean up

From the almuni email yesterday-
Coffee Craze
Information according to the Mayo Clinic, Buzz Feed
What do college students and business employees have in common? Coffee. It's the drink of choice for more than half of the people in the United States, and is no secret coffee is what gets many of us through the day.
We asked our Facebook followers how many cups of coffee they drink per day, and we found that, of those who responded, K-Staters drink an average of 3.5 cups of coffee either at home or at work. Some even admitted to drinking up to two pots a day!
Coffee is often an office staple, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It boosts your short term memory, gets your metabolism going, and helps you focus on your important tasks at work. What many people don't know is that coffee has more benefits than these and can help you lead a healthy life style. For example, coffee has been proven to prevent cognitive decline and diseases such as Alzheimer's, lessen the chance of developing Type 2 diabetes and curb many cases of depression (Mayo Clinic).
So for those of you in the office who enjoy a cup of joe, be reassured that today, studies are showing the benefits outweigh the negatives people have said in years past about coffee. And just for your entertainment, here are some interesting facts about the world's most popular drink:
Seattle, Wash., is credited as the city that drinks the most coffee. For every 100,000 residents, there are 35 coffee shops and an average of $36 is spent on coffee each month.
There is a spa in Japan that lets you bathe in coffee.
Coffee beans actually come from the pit of a berry, making them a fruit.
President Theodore Roosevelt had a mighty love for coffee, consuming up to a gallon a day.

Cancer[edit source | editbeta]
Over 1,000 chemicals have been reported in roasted coffee, and 19 are known rodent carcinogens;[53] however, most substances cited as rodent carcinogens occur naturally and should not be assumed to be carcinogenic in humans at exposure levels typically experienced in day-to-day life.[53] However, whole coffee extract is suspected to cause cancer of the human pancreas,[54] and there is limited evidence of a weak positive relationship between coffee consumption and bladder cancer in humans.[55] However, more recent follow-up studies to the 1981 study linking coffee consumption to pancreatic cancer have not found any link between coffee consumption and pancreatic cancer.[56] A recent meta-analysis based on 37 case-control and 17 cohort studies (10,594 cases)[57] provided quantitative evidence that coffee consumption was not appreciably related to pancreatic cancer risk, even at high intakes. No significant association between coffee consumption and the risk of gastric and/or pancreatic cancers was found in a more recent prospective study.[58]
Instant coffee contains a much higher level of acrylamide than brewed coffee.[37]
Gastrointestinal problems[edit source | editbeta]
Coffee can damage the lining of the gastrointestinal organs, causing gastritis and ulcers. The consumption of coffee is therefore not recommended for people with gastritis, colitis, and ulcers.[59]
Psychological effects and sleep changes[edit source | editbeta]
Many coffee drinkers are familiar with "coffee jitters", a nervous condition that occurs when one has had too much caffeine. It can also cause anxiety and irritability, in some with excessive coffee consumption, and some as a withdrawal symptom.[60] Coffee can also cause insomnia in some. In others it can cause narcolepsy.[61] However an analysis of the Nurses' Health Study concluded depression rates among women decreased with increased consumption of caffeinated coffee.[62]
Caffeine, a major component of coffee, has various psychological effects. A study from Johns Hopkins Medical School suggests that the perceived psychological benefits of caffeine are merely the result of eliminating withdrawal symptoms.[63] The author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 suggests that chronic caffeine consumption can lead to a decrease in emotional intelligence.[63]
Cholesterol[edit source | editbeta]
A 2007 study by the Baylor College of Medicine indicates that the diterpenes cafestol and kahweol, found only in coffee beans, may raise levels of low-density lipoprotein or LDL in humans.[64] This increase in LDL levels is an indicator that coffee raises cholesterol. The Baylor study suggests a possible link between cafestol, kahweol and higher levels of cholesterol in the body.
Paper coffee filters have a property that binds to lipid-like compounds which allows the filter to remove most of the cafestol and kahweol found in coffee. Brew methods which do not use a paper filter, such as the use of a press pot, do not remove cafestol and kahweol from the final brewed product.[65][66]
Blood pressure[edit source | editbeta]
Caffeine has previously been implicated in increasing the risk of high blood pressure; however, recent studies on coffee consumption have not confirmed any association.[67] In a 12-year study of 155,000 female nurses, large amounts of coffee did not induce a "risky rise in blood pressure".[68][69] Previous studies had already shown statistically insignificant associations between coffee drinking and clinical hypertension. Effect of coffee on morbidity and mortality due to its effect on blood pressure is too weak, and has not been studied. Other positive and negative effects of coffee on health would be difficult confounding factors.[1]
Effects on pregnancy[edit source | editbeta]
Caffeine molecules are small enough to penetrate the placenta and slip into the baby's blood circulation. Unlike adults, organs and systems in fetuses are not full-fledged, therefore not capable of fully metabolizing caffeine and excreting it. The stimulant tends to linger in the fetus's blood ten times longer than in adults. High levels of caffeine are bound to accumulate in the baby's body with frequent maternal consumption of caffeine. Just like what it does to adults, caffeine could also send the baby's pulse and breathing rate racing and affect its sleep pattern for an extended duration.[70]
A February 2003 Danish study of 18,478 women linked heavy coffee consumption during pregnancy to significantly increased risk of stillbirths (but no significantly increased risk of infant death in the first year). "The results seem to indicate a threshold effect around four to seven cups per day," the study reported. Those who drank eight or more cups a day (64 U.S. fl oz or 1.89 L) were at 220% increased risk compared with nondrinkers. This study has not yet been repeated, but has caused some doctors to caution against excessive coffee consumption during pregnancy.[71]
Decaffeinated coffee is also regarded as a potential health risk to pregnant women when chemical solvents are used to extract the caffeine instead of other less invasive processes.[citation needed] The impact of these chemicals is debated, however, as the solvents in question evaporate at 80–90 °C, and coffee beans are decaffeinated before roasting, which occurs at approximately 200 °C. As such, these chemicals, namely trichloroethane and methylene chloride, are present in trace amounts at most, and may not pose a significant threat to embryos and fetuses.[citation needed]
Iron deficiency anemia[edit source | editbeta]
Coffee consumption can lead to, but is not the cause of iron deficiency anemia, especially in mothers and infants.[72] Coffee also interferes with the absorption of supplemental iron.[73] Interference with iron absorption is due to the polyphenols present in coffee. Four major classes were identified: flavan-3-ols (monomers and procyanidins), hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols and anthocyanidins.[47]
Coronary artery disease[edit source | editbeta]
A 2004 study tried to discover why the beneficial and detrimental effects of coffee conflict. The study concluded that consumption of coffee is associated with significant elevations in biochemical markers of inflammation. This is a detrimental effect of coffee on the cardiovascular system, which may explain why coffee has so far only been shown to help the heart at levels of four cups (24 fl oz or 600 mL) or fewer per day.[74]
The health risks of decaffeinated coffee have been studied, with varying results. One variable is the type of decaffeination process used; while some involve the use of organic solvents which may leave residual traces, others rely on steam.[citation needed]
A study has shown that cafestol, a substance which is present in boiled coffee drinks, increases serum cholesterol levels, especially in women. Filtered coffee contains only trace amounts of cafestol.
Polymorphisms in the CYP1A2 gene may lead to a slower metabolism of caffeine. In patients with a slow version of the enzyme the risk for myocardial infarction (heart attack) is increased by a third (2–3 cups) to two thirds (>4 cups). The risk was more marked in people under the age of 59.[75]
A Harvard study conducted over the course of 20 years of 128,000 people published in 2006 concluded that there was no evidence to support the claim that coffee consumption itself increases the risk of coronary heart disease. The study did, however, show a correlation between heavy consumption of coffee and higher degrees of exposure to other coronary heart disease risk factors such as smoking, greater alcohol consumption, and lack of physical exercise.[76] The results apply only to coffee filtered through paper filters, which excludes boiled coffee and espresso, for example. Additionally, the lead researcher on this study acknowledged that subsets of the larger group may be at risk for heart attack when drinking multiple cups of coffee a day due to genetic differences in metabolizing caffeine.[citation needed]
The Iowa Women's Health Study showed that women who consumed coffee actually had fewer cardiovascular disease incidents and lower cancer rates than the general population. For women who drank 6 or more cups, the benefit was even greater. However, this study excluded 35% of its original participants who already had cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases when the study began. Since participants were all over the age of 55, no good conclusion can be drawn about the long term effect of coffee drinking on heart disease from this study.[77]
Interactions with medications[edit source | editbeta]
Caffeine with Tylenol (Paracetamol, acetaminophen) may damage liver.[78]
Glaucoma[edit source | editbeta]
A link between heavy coffee drinking and increased risk of glaucoma was found in data from men and women in the Nurses Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.[79]

I drink coffee to keep me regular, only reason. :frown:
Also to make it palatable, I add either significant amounts of irish creamer or if I'm at a gas station, I mix 2/3 regular coffee with some flavor of cappuccino.

I have had it like 15 yrs and it still works fine.
Three settings for how coarse it grinds. I french press and it works great.

I do a perculator but French Press works perfectly.
I really don't understand coffee snobbery. The amount of effort required to get a cup of coffee that tastes slightly better than auto-drip coffee just doesn't seem worth it.

French press removes the filter and gives you all the oil that a filter normally catches. I prefer it quite a bit. :dunno:
Also, my bro bought me an Aeropress for xmas. Didn't get around to trying it until this summer. It makes really good Espresso and cafe americano(if that is your thing)

time exposed to water is the other big deal for me. Can control how bitter it can get. My opinion may be skewed by the fact that most coffee prepared with drip is also folgers or something like that.

For me coffee just wakes me up and gets the mail moving. On extended vision quest-y type trips I usually just throw a couple packs of Starbucks frappuccino's in the cooler. But drinking something cold when it's cold outside seems weird. Might try this French press thingamabob.
-
french press is good for american style coffee. if you like espresso style you can use an italian maker no prob while camping.

for real simple, the starbucks instants (via) aren't bad at all. supposedly there are other decent instant brands too, but i've only tried the starbucks. drink them all the time in hotels.

Quantity is the key factor here. There used to be a guy at the office who would brew about 3 pots of coffee every day just for himself. JFC, I could smell his breath at my desk when he was standing at the door to my office. The normal people who only drink 1-3 cups per day probably don't have good breath, but it's not bad enough to complain about.

That's kind of what I'm talking about. "controlling how bitter" coffee is doesn't matter to me - I can't tell a significant difference between, say, Blue Bottle or regular coffee shop coffee, for example.
I DO however grind whole beans. It seems like anything additional is a huge jump in work required with a miniscule improvement in flavor.
-
If you don't taste a diff, then I can understand. Simple is great.
That said, I became a fan of my french press because it made coffee that actually tasted good to me without having to over sugar it or anything, back before I was anything close to a coffee snob.

Just pour a cup of black coffee and go back to your desk. It's faster, easier, healthier, and tastes better that way.
-
I was at Starbucks last week and the guy in front of me ordered a venti Pike Place Roast. He then went over to the sugar and cream and started pouring the sugar. The canister of sugar was completely full when he started pouring and he just kept it coming until there was only about 1/3 of the sugar left in that thing. :sdeek:

It's exempt. I've never seen someone enjoy a beer in the same way I've seen someone enjoy a cup of hot coco. Just a different experience for the viewer. I guess it's really hot beverage enjoyment that I don't like, because they have to take it slow and really savor it and they're more likely to make enjoyment noises.

can confirm. I have the maestro plus which is the same model, they just rebranded it to the encore a year or so ago I think.
also I've gone through just about every type of coffee making in existence over the last couple of years so I'm somewhat of an unintended expert on coffee making...which is pretty ridiculous considering I only drink one 20 oz. cup every day (before I brush my teeth, bread!). the absolute most important thing you can do is buy good coffee and grind it with a burr grinder right before you brew it. if you do that, you can pretty much tweak any brewing method (french press, espresso/americano, keurig, drip, etc.) to work for your taste.
I've pretty much settled on the keurig with freshly ground coffee in a reusable filter. cheap, quick and good.

Study: Heavy Coffee Drinking Could Impact Lifespan
Updated: Aug 16, 2013 11:41 AM CST
By WBAY.com Staff - email
New research shows the amount of coffee you drink could affect your lifespan.
The study, conducted by the Mayo Clinic, shows people under 55 who drink more than four cups of coffee a day have a higher risk of death.
For people over 55, the coffee didn't have any effect on lifespan.
Researchers say men under 55 who drink more than four cups daily are at a 56 percent increased risk of early death. For women, the risk is 113 percent higher.
Some studies have shown that drinking more like two cups a day can lower your risk of heart disease.
I mean, I am fine, unless a "cup" of coffee isn't 8oz for some weird bizzarro reason. I mean, 32oz of coffee is a lot.

32 oz of coffee daily is a lot but for everyone of these "coffee kills you" studies there are just as many "coffee saves your life/kills cancer" studies. The fact is coffee (black or with milk) is pure nectar from the Gods and anyone who tells you different is a liar. I could back this up with studies n such but I think I've made my point.

Btw, I've found Kona coffee (big island) to be the best. Fike farms is good. The owner is a bit odd but she's more than willing to brew you a pot in her kitchen on her mr coffee. She'll also let you roam her house while she leaves to chase down coffee plant destroying pigs. Actually she's really odd.
-
I've cut back to just drinking on the weekends.
The side effects of too much caffeine as it relates to bowel movement and high blood pressure is too harmful in the long term.
If you drink too much in one day you run the risk of depleting your body of alot of nutrients and vitamins, which in turn stunts your bone and muscle repair. Also the daily high blood pressure raises will take a toll on your arteries and help facilitate blockage.
I switched to an alt coffe like drink that I found at hippy foods. It's called Caffix and I drink it with almond milk. It tastes just like the real thing.
I hit up some real joe at the coffeehouse on the weekends though. I enjoy the live jazz bands that usually play there.

I recently picked up a Keurig elite. Can somebody tell me what the best K-Cup on the market is? Thanks.

My wife and I settled into the Starbucks Veranda.
Other K-cups tend to burn a bit, as was mentioned, but this one does alright.

Dark Roast K-Cups, in my opinion, tend to be pretty awful. I like them for the most part (when not brewed in a Keurig), but about the only thing a Keurig can do alright is a blonde.
But, that's just my take on it.
I have a Hamilton Beach that has a normal brewer and a K-Cup. My wife was demanding a Keurig, and I was less than impressed with them, so I needed something that could brew a decent pot of coffee.
I will say that I love the Keurig for hot chocolate and tea. That's been very handy for me so far.

I drink hot coffee until lunch time and then after lunch if I have any left in my pot I pour it over ice.

sounds like cold brew takes forever
who wants to plan days in advance for a cuppajoe?

I put the batch together to steep yesterday at lunch time and let it steep over night. Strained it into a pitcher this morning and now I've got a delicious pitcher of cold brew to enjoy for a couple of days. Once I get low, I put another batch together to steep. It's very similar to putting water and grounds into a pot with a timer the night before.

The coffee pods need to be cleaned out before recycling on your neighborhood recyclables. If you through non-recyclables into the recyclables, the entire recycle truck is sometimes dumped into the garbage. Well, the truck isn't thrown into the garbage, just the alleged recyclables.

Nailed cold brew. Starbucks Cafe Verona (12oz), course grind, stir in 2 cups cold water, then pour in another 5.5cups (don't stir). Use stainless steel stock pot. Cover and sit for 12hrs. Strain with coffee filters.

Are you diluting it further with hot or cold later?

So far I have been taking a 1:1 ratio milk to coffee with a little simple syrup made with Sugar in the Raw. CNSWife likes a 2:3 coffee to milk with the same amt of syrup. Hers tastes exactly like starbucks new Double Shot on Ice (sans protein).
I haven't tried it diluted w water, but have read that similar ratios w water works. Have also heard that diluting w hot water ( like you would to make a normal Americano w normal espresso) is very good.

explain the point of the 2 cups stir, 5.5 cups no stir.

Blooms the grounds, I guess. It's something I read as part of another trial that didn't work as well. Evidently, stirring a lot with all the water can force overexposure and cause bitterness.

A coffee snob friend of mine told me he really liked the Starbucks Via Ready BrewTM. But he didn't like that they were like $1/8 oz.

I think I fell asleep at work today. I was really fighting that warm fuzzy feeling and went to go get some coffee to hopefully wake me up, but when I looked at the clock, about an hour or so of time had gone by in what felt like 10 minutes from the time I looked at it before.

not really a coffee post but here goes anyway-
i stopped by target today at lunch to pick up the new christmas candy cane tic tacs. they're pretty cool looking. white with tiny candy canes printed on them.
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.walmartimages.com%2Fdfw%2Fdce07b8c-4a4c%2Fk2-_8fb91069-43cd-4a53-8052-9520a6e592bf.v1.jpg&hash=7b1a7dc5c534754fa4122ca4cc9566801c5350e8)
so i went to the christmas candy section and found them. i looked at them and decided just to buy the whole box @ $1.00 per container.
i didn't take the time to count how many containers were in the box, seemed like about 12 or 16.
so i went through the self-check out and rang myself up but really kind sleepwalked through the process because #mondays.
the total was $16 and some change. but if i bought 16 @ $1.00 then crap, because i also bought a pound of great northern dried beans and some chicken broth. so $16 and some change wouldn't have been enough and now i'm a felon for stealing from target.
then i was walking to my car and thought to myself, hmm- how many tic tacs were in the box.
picked up my speed and rushed to my car, immediately checked how many tic tacs were in the box.
you guessed it- 12. feels great. another christmas miracle for clams.
-
Did you ever think maybe someone else would like the opportunity to buy some of those tic/tac"s you hog.
-
w/ some of this limited edition christmas candy i have to approach it as a "dog eat dog" scenario. that being said, they had 2 more boxes on the shelf and untold boxes in some storage area in the back of the store i'm sure.
-

i buy (and consume) the vias. usually the colombians. pretty good for an instant (i think, haven't really compared to many other instants). they're like $15 for 25 at costco.

Awesome, I feel totally validated. I drink them when I'm camping or backpacking. Sometimes I'll mix with a bag of hot chocolate. I buy them off Amazon but I think I paid more than that Costco deal.

Just started drinking coffee regularly. Mostly for social reasons, I enjoy coffee banter at work. The other morning I made a joke about needing a coffee IV and it went over pretty well. Thinking of spending some of my Christmas money on a coffee mug for work. Should I get the one that says "Coffee keeps me going until it is acceptable to drink beer" or the one that says "Obsessive Coffee Disorder"?

The one where the coffee mug is a replica toilet is the best. Imagine the "brown water" jokes, or the "this stuff goes right through me" lines.

I hardly ever make coffee at home. For me going out to get coffee is a simple pleasure. Sometimes with others and often by myself.

I find it to be pretty enjoyable. Early morning coffee and quiet.

I definitely don't do it for the caffeine. It's a nice side effect, but really just enjoy the flavor and process.

I understand that. I usually don't take the time at my house before work for coffee. I know how great that is, but I don't take the time.

I suck at waking up early, so it doesn't happen a ton, but when it does it sets a good tone for the day. It's really only like 30 more minutes in the morning, but it makes a huge difference.

Same here. I get up in time to shower and shave and dress for work. Out the door by about 6:30. Not early, but not always easy for me.

Gaggia Classic and gaggia mdf grinder. Just ordered a VST basket and am awaiting it's arrival. What do you have?

sys I loaded up on the vias via Costco. With my jetboil I can have a hot cup in under 2 minutes.

i'd have to look, i doubt if i'll remember. it's nothing special, just a pressurized maker. i'm sure yours will produce a much better shot when you get the hang of it.

looking at images, i think mine is a saeco aroma. don't think it's made anymore.

Nespresso makes one for like $100. It was packaged with a machine we got and my wife loves it.

$100 just for hot frothy milk. Not sure it's worth it.
I basically can get what I want by heating a Mason jar half full of milk in the microwave then putting on the lid and shaking it. I don't have any Mason jars though and you have to buy a whole pallet of them to get just one. (Maybe I should talk to Trim.) And you need to make sure to wear a oven mitt but not let the jar slide out of your hand.
-
just buy the frother, good lord.
-
Just heat up extra milk when you are making your oatmeal breakfast.

The cheap espresso makers at walmart have frothers. You can use it without having to make espresso. Bought one like 10 yrs ago for like 35 bucks

They have some at Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond for $10-$20. I think you stick into your container (pitcher, cup) of hot milk. Is that the same thing that you are talking about or something different?

I rarely make coffee at home. Drinking coffee is more of a social thing for me. If it's a cold weekend and I intend to stay in then I'll grind some beans and make a pot. Kind of got hooked on Starbucks, but rarely go there anymore.

I bought a new coffee pot a few weeks ago and have been enjoying the "House" brand gourmet coffee it brews

any thoughts on a coffee pot that has a grinder included and also does espresso? (also would like wi-fi) tia.

The award for best fast food coffee, in my opinion , must go to Sonic. Man, I really, really like their coffee.
-
That's nuts, it never even occurred to me they would have coffee
-
Huh. My Dad eats breakfast at Sonic often. Didn't even think about the coffee angle.
-
To me, it's tied with Dunkin for fast food coffee. I love both of them.
-
dunkin coffee tastes like something gross and I've never had sonic coffee. So I've got two data points indicating that Pete is wrong.

I love Dunkin coffee, def the best drive thru variety. Chick-fil-a is like the worst shitwater ever which is too bad because chickin' minis are the goat fast food bfast

IIRC sonic serves that green mountain(something like that) coffee. I agree Pete it’s really good coffee

Saying you don't like dunkin is something I literally have never heard anyone say before. You may have taste buds cancer, SD! I would go get checked, and if they diagnose you with tastes buds cancer (they will), I just hope you have elected the proper medical coverage at work that allows you to choose your treatment center and physician instead of forcing you to stay in-network. :Stretcher:

Pro tip for fellow drip makers out there: the instructions always tell you to do way too many scoops of coffee. Honestly unless you’re using a filter with like a gigantic diameter there’s not much difference between 6 and 12 scoops.

n00b question that maybe gE engineering and chemistry experts can help me with: why do they always say to use cold water when making coffee? If the water is going to be heated to near-boiling or boiling, why would it matter?
-
The chemical composition of water changes depending on what you use to heat the water with. Coffee makers have a special heating element that heats the water in just the right way so that chemically it is more ideal to rinse over coffee grounds. It's important to fill the coffee maker with cool water(below 72F) so that the chemical heating process is done correctly and your coffee comes out with the right texture for a solid cup of joe.

Not trying to be dense but how does the chemical composition change? Isn't it H20 the whole time?
-
I always assumed it was cause hot water has to go through more junk (namely, a water heater) before it gets to the tap. So more opportunity for contamination.
-
I'm highly skeptical my Mr. Coffee that cost $15 has any kind of special heating element. It more likely has the cheapest hottest thing they could jam in there without causing many shorts or fires or outright melting through the case.

FWIW, this tread says that cold water has more dissolved O2 in it and that is good, i guess:

A water molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms bonded to an oxygen atom, and its overall structure is bent. This is because the oxygen atom, in addition to forming bonds with the hydrogen atoms, also carries two pairs of unshared electrons. All of the electron pairs shared and unshared repel each other.
The most stable arrangement is the one that puts them farthest apart from each other: a tetrahedron, with the O-H bonds forming two out of the four “legs”. The lone pairs are slightly more repulsive than the bond electrons, so the angle between the O-H bonds is slightly less than the 109° of a perfect tetrahedron, around 104.5°.^2 The heating element in a normal coffee machine keeps this perfect tetrahedron intact while heating the water up. So when the water goes over the coffee grounds with this perfect tetrahedron it chemically can absorb more of the flavor of the coffee grounds.

More to do with hot water just sits there in the tank, but cold water is cycled more often. Stagnate water doesn't taste good.

hot water leaches more lead out of your lead pipes

That's twenty ounces of HFCS in various different flavors, topped with whip cream and then more sugar on top.
Probably pretty healthy.

I ordered some "Alpine Start" instant coffee from Amazon the other day. Not as good as actual brewed coffee but much less terrible than other instant coffee I've tried in the past. Would recommend if you need a coffee-like beverage in a place where you can't make actual coffee.

In my opinion, the secret to really enjoying coffee is to use half and half.

The Vietnamese seem to be in possession of elite coffee knowledge.
During the summer, my mom will some times make this Vietnamese coffee -inspired beverage. Cold brew coffee over ice cubes with sweetened condensed milk. It is absolutely delicious.
-
Yeah, Vietnamese coffee is :lick:
-
The Asian grocery stores here in ICT have the best coffees.

Half sleep and half away rather than full asleep?

If I had to give up coffee or beer, i'm not sure which one I would pick. It honestly might be beer and I love beer.

My intro to coffee took all the way til I was already 4+ years out of school, and a guy on a worksite I was at used the office I was in Keurig for his half coffee/half hot chocolate. Well of course that meant he had more than he really wanted, and since I sat next to it he kept asking me if I wanted the extra, finally I caved in, and it was then I realized that cream really muted the bitter taste of coffee, and the kick I got from the caffeine was enough and I was in. 7 years later I don't do a ton but I need at least 2-3 cups throughout the morning to get me going.
Also, FTR, I have always loved the smell of coffee, even as a kid it smelled awesome, it just tasted like crap to me. I takes time/the right prep/the right way to take it

I work in sports. Work maybe 55ish hours during concert weeks and game weeks. I have always been able to wake up without caffeine which I am thankful for, when I have a caffeinated drink it's unsweet tea or a can of pop or gatorade when I get groggy mid workday/night. Coffee I think could truly be a game changer I have tried the cream trick or milk. Last year during the playoffs I would make a caffeinated milk which would be a shot of coffee in the bottom of the cup then milk on top of it. That is the only way I can't taste it.
