yeah. it was one yard joke too many and not a very funny one at that. did roger give you any jarod updates?

No, you were right, my yard sucked.  Is Jarod his son? We usually talk about the Cats or yard/neighborhood stuff.  I googled his name and if it is his son, it looks like he's pretty successful.

Yeah, that's probably double per ounce of a few whole-bean options at the store. I may try it some time. Would grocery store beans w/ a french press be a heck of a lot better than w/ a cheap ass drip machine?

Thats a really good question.  By the time I started with the french press I was already using the premium beans and I've never used them in my drip machine so my answer would be a total guess.  If you'd like my guess, it would be that yes, it would be a good jump up in quality with a french press.   You could start with something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Bodum-1548-01US-1-liter-34-Ounce-Coffeemaker/dp/B000KEM4TQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317415271&sr=8-1

Then you just need an electric kettle to boil the water (I really don't recommend microwaving it.)  If you end up getting one I'll let you know the steps to make it correctly.  It takes about 6 minutes to make it from the time when you start boiling the water so keep that in mind.

yeah, son. was a pretty good bball player. think he may have played juco somewhere. not sure. that french press stuff has always interested me but i'm just too lazy. i mean six minutes and you have to like do stuff? i don't know.

Not really. Just as easy as regular coffee, if not easier.

that french press stuff has always interested me but i'm just too lazy. i mean six minutes and you have to like do stuff? i don't know.

For people that are interested, here's my method.

1. Put water in the kettle to start boiling
2. While the water is boiling I grind my beans and put them in the press
3. When the water comes to a boil I turn it off and wait about 30 seconds for the water to cool a little bit.
4. Pour the water in the press and wait 1 minute before putting the top on
5. After the top is on I wait another 3:30 until I press down the plunger and pour my coffee.

This is a little more complicated than some people make it.  A lot of people just wait for the boil then pour it in with the coffee for 4-5 minutes.  What I do is set 5:00 on my microwaves kitchen timer and start it when I turn off the boiling water.  At 4:30 pour the water in the press, 3:30 put the top on, and when it beeps it's ready.  Pretty easy.

Makes for a nice break in the middle of the day, but if you drink a ton of coffee it could get a little annoying.

thanks for the info.  ms. tobias decided to break my coffee machine this morning, so i decided to take the plunge and go grab a french press this morning.  i'm not really a coffee snob and am pretty lazy, but this irish coffee is  :drink:

Forgot to mention that I give the coffee a few stirs at 1 minute before I put the top on (add to step 4).

Did you give it a shot already Tobias?  If so, did you taste the difference?  Another thing to remember is when using a french press, there will usually be about one drink left in the bottom of your mug where the finer grounds have collected.  Can be a weird surprise if you're not used to it.

i did stir, but more or less right after adding the water.  granted i don't drink much coffee on the weekend (drink a boatload of the cheap stuff at work during the week) but i enjoyed my first go at it.

i'll be sure to give it a whirl in the morning when i'm less pak'd.  i did notice a small amount of the finer grounds at the bottom but it didn't throw me off as i'm used to it from oversteeped tea.

thanks to you and ladyfriend for motivation

French perfection:

1. Read reccomended ratio of coffee to water from producer
2. Get water in measure cu and micro for approx 2 min
3. Grind beans while micro'ing water
4. Put beans and water in press immediately
5. Stirr immediately and put top on
6. 3.5 min, then slowly press and pour
7. Drink and wonder why you have ever done it any other way

Easy, quick, minimal clean up

i listened to a podcast recently that said that coffee is more addictive than heroin and worse for your body than heroin mixed with crack cocaine.  just some pastries to eat with your delicious slave traded coffee
