Which GRCOAT players formally asked for a release?

I don't know.  But I do know our policy had they asked!

I don't think you do. I mean, we wouldn't have had to hire frank if we wouldn't have let anyone go. We could have hired that dream boat mark fox and x'd and o'd like mad.

I pretty sure we said "we're going to hire Frank and Te, how about you guys stay around for a year and see how it goes. You can get a release then if you want one."

I'm pretty sure walker and Beasley always planned on being gone after a year regardless.  The only reason a release was ever brought up was because somebody asked Weiser about it in the press conference to announce Huggins' departure.  Once Te was brought on board I think the rest took care of itself.  Beasley was going to go to Charlotte to play for Te.  Funny how nobody at KSU was all up in arms when he used his relationship with Beasley to get a better job.

Yeah, I agree, 'blast. However, the '98 cats kinda make me feel like it could be a thing. That was a great win for OU tho.

i mean i guess, being demoted to the Sugar Bowl is not the same as being demoted to the Alamo Bowl

yes and also like half our coaching staff announced they were leaving before the game.  Mangino announced he was leaving after but apparently he had already planned on leaving before.  I don't remember anything like that happening with Alabama.   In addition we were facing Drew Brees who is probably one of the 5 best QB's of the last 20 years or so.

This was a serious inquiry.  :frown:

you have to pay it, unless they are going to and will provide documentation. serious answer.

great reply. thanks.

Techinally you should have had them fill out a w-9 out before you made this transaction and then provided them with a 1099 at year end for their portion of the winnings.  That would shift the tax burdon from you to them.  I'm guessing none of this happend so you probably just have to pay the tax.

One thing to be sure and remember is you can offset gambling winnings with gambling losses even losses that are unreported to the IRS.  It would be good to have some type of proof of said losses.

According to Stevesie this is no longer true in Kansas.  :dunno: Maybe that isn't effective until 2014 tax year?

Yes I believe the law will take effect in tax year 2014 unless it gets changed.  It's a very unfair tax IMO to tax winnings but not allow people to offset them with losses.  The people it will hurt are the problem gamblers who hit a couple of big slot wins a year but still lose more than they win.

Losses will still be deductable on federal returns though which is where most of your tax dollars go.  States just need to keep it simple and stick to the same deductions as Federal.  Brownback is doing/causing a lot of screwy things to happen to KS state taxes.

A little known or talked about tax fact is the April 15th deadline is really just a deadline to pay.  If you don't owe any additional taxes it's pretty much meaningless to you and you can file after it with no penalty.   You have to up three year's to claim your refund though I'm not sure why anyone would wait that long.

This project will get done one way or another.  I wouldn't get your hopes up, 'taters.

I think most kstate fans are happy that ku is going to keep pouring most of their resources into a secondary sport that they have very little room for improved performance or revenue in.

32
yeah that sounds like just a great idea. let's put one hundred 18-13 yr old uber athletic males from different sports into the same building blocks aways from other students.

The NCAA doesn't allow athletic dorms anymore so you'd have to have regular students in the same facililty.  I think it has to be more than half regular students which is why the proposed KU building is a 66 person facility with 32 bball spots.

The problem with this type of facility is you want to make it as small as possible in order to have the lowest number of regular students possible.  But when you do that it becomes very hard to justify on a cost per student basis and the revenue projections fall short of what is needed to service a bond issue.  If KU wants to do this fine but it sure as hell needs to be done with donar money.  I'm surprised they had the nerve to take something like this to the legislature in the first place.

Well it helps when your dad is a D-1 OC and hires you to coach his WR's but good for him.  It looks like Rhoades is really turning over the entire offense to Mangino.   He has badly mismanaged that offense and QB situation the last couple of seasons so he needed something.   I doubt it helps much overall but it may buy him a couple more years.

AJ Bush commits to Nubs
this class is pretty great bit holy eff at the qb recruitment.

We stopped recruiting this guy a long time ago and never tried to get back in on him.  I'm not sure why but I think the coaches were fine not taking a qb this year.  They didn't fight much to keep sharp and never went after any others after he left.  They must really like this walk on kid from harrisonville.

35
The decoupling thing isn't going to happen. That would be the point where they would fail to be college sports at all and you'd lose the things that people like about college sports in the first place.  You'd lose the charade of amatuerism that allow people to feel good about their donations.  You'd also probably lose tax favored status for both the programs and their donars. Essentially you'd be turning college football and bball into minor league sports and people don't like minor league sports.  You think somebody is going to donate millions of dollars to some minor league team loosely affiliated with a school?

36

You're right.  but, of course, you don't need to take out a loan when you have a job.  so, the question is whether their athletic services are a job.  I was a houseboy.  I had friends who worked in aggieville.  so we could have extra cash.  we didn't need to take out interest bearing loans for our drinking money.  Neither should these athletes who, through their labor, generate millions of dollars in revenue to pay university coaches and administrators.

it would be very, very, very challenging to make enough money from work to cover the cost of tuition, books and living expenses while still being a fulltime student. lord knows a freaking houseboy salary would not cut it.

I'm not talking about books, tuition, and living expenses.  I'm talking about extra cash (i.e. drinking money).  The stud athletes and stud academics are all benefitting from free tuition/books/housing.  no athletes are complaing about that.  the issue is whether they should get extra money on the side.  You're saying that if they want that "extra money" they should apply for a pell grant.

Yes. If that money is available then they should apply for it.

It is available to some and they do apply for it and receive it.

37
How many players at K-State are really worth getting paid in addition to what their scholarship covers...10? 20?

The thing is they are already spending crazy amount of money on these kis.  So the argument isn't really are they worth the money?  It's obvious that they are worth the money to the schools because the schools are spending huge sums of money on faclities, coaches, recruiting expenses etc to attract the kids and keep them happy once they get there.  The question isn't really about the money it's more about how it is allocated and how much do you let them decide how to spend vs. spending it for them.

38
Should different schools give different stipends based upon cost of living? I'm just not sure. Requiring every school to just provide student housing to all scholarship athletes with a meal plan just makes more sense to me. That way all expenses are paid for, and no school gets the advantages/disadvantages that would come with a standard across-the-board stipend.

This already happens with the money that they are allowed for housing.   Once a student athlete moves out of the dorms then they just get a monthly check to cover housing.  That check isn't going to be the same at USC as it is at K-State.  So most of these kids are already getting monthly checks as it is.  Just beef them up a little bit so they don't have to hardly scrape by.  But make no mistake these kids are already getting paid and the stuff you're bringing up is already going on.

39
I say give them a small additional stipend and get it over with.  A few hundred bucks a month to cover clothing and other costs that are not included in their current scholarships.  They're already getting paid just pay them a little more to cover the true cost of going to college.

Um this is supposed to be a completely anonymous recruit, so I'm nor sure it is anyone we have heard about yet.
Wally tho.

The last two guys he built up as our definite big time top remaining targets (Wilson & knight) ended up having their offers pulled before they visited.

why can will play 35 minutes a game for 4 years, but other people are tired with 25 minutes?  hit the gym buttholes so we don't have to put guys like omari in.

With Will I think the lack of any fast twitch muscle fibers gives him more stamina.

Sorry if I'm totally luking this talking point, but isn't it safe to say the turning point in the game was when smart high fived the backboard? Granted spradling only hit one of the fts but they showed a stat of how we out scored them from that point on with smart on the bench. Don't get me wrong, I was fist pumping and kick-punching like a wild man, but it troubles me that we might owe this victory to a completely avoidable stupid choice by a member of the opposing team. Thanks and I'll hang up and listen great win go cats.

When you win a close game it's often due to a completely avoidable stupid choice by a member of the opposing team.  I'm not sure why this would trouble you.

Does every coach know the opposing players names, down to a guy playing his second game and the back up point guard? Usually they just call then by their numbers.

Those were fun quotes. That was very nice of their coach to say

Nigel was committed to GW before he flipped to KSU.

If K-State football is so great, why do you guys talk about KU football 24/7?

it's simply because Kstate football isn't all that great.

Since 1993, Snyder has 94 wins and 49 losses in conf play.  66% win clip.  And since 93' he is 65-25 vs the current members of the Big12.
There are a lot of teams in BCS conf that would love to win 2 of every 3 in conf action.

As far as KU goes..... for me it is just funny I guess that Ku has all of 3 conf wins in the past 5 years.  It was a long long fall from the 07 success, and I know there were a decent amount of fans that thought Charlie was gonna at least get KU back to being mediocre.   So far that hasn't happened.     If Ksu hoops were to lose 2/3 of the conf games for 2-3 straight yrs, there would be a good percentage of KU fans that would be smiling from ear to ear

Ku has now been dead last in the big 12 for five straight seasons.  As big of a joke as we were in bball under wooly he never once finished last.  It's hard to do much less five straight times.

I'd prefer Sams to be the starting QB but if that isn't going to happen I at least want him on the field.  He's one of the top few athletes on a team that can always use more athletes.  The only thing worse than moving him to WR would be to let him stand there with a clipboard all season.

At this point he knows the QB position well enough that he could handle extra responsiblities.  If Waters goes down you obviously move him back to QB full time.

I just hope we can finally blitz on 3rd and 6 or 7 without leaving slants wide open for first downs. The soft coverage on non-blitzing downs really doesn't bother me as much.

true true..

Predictions for next years Offense ?

Anyone hear if Judah Jones is kicking ass and taking names?

He's not
Source?

Well, have you heard his name since he committed?

He's actually been mentioned some.  He's the best young/ redshirting wr we had this year. I'm not really sure that means he was kicking ass and taking names though as the young wr group has been a disappointment.  I think he will be a solid contributer for us down the road, a couple of the other receivers probably won't.

Big diff in failing at Notre Dame and failing at KU.  That is like two bookends of failure holding together between them the whole of college football.

Yes but the results his last several years at Notre Dame were results almost no school would be satified with.  It wasn't like he was winning ten games and they wanted 11 or 12.  He was going sub 500 and losing to the service academies.  He went 3-9 in his third season at Notre Dame, it's almost unbelievable how bad of a coach you have to be to do that.

In two yrs, KU will be lucky to be able to even interview, let alone actually land, a "maybe" guy.  Pretty soon, KU will be the place where coaches who have to take the tough route to prove themselves go, or the coach that hates being mid-majory but everyone but him knows doesn't belong at the next level.

I think KU already hit that level with their last coaching search.  Weis wasn't a "maybe" guy he was a guy that had already shown he wasn't capable at the BCS level.  His name wasn't even getting mentioned with any other coaching searches.

I think the scariest thing, if I'm a KU fan, is that at this point, they have an alarmingly low amount of commitments (that we know about), especially from high schools considering how upperclassman heavy they're going to be.

Similar to RP's juco grab FTW?

The two coaches aren't all that different.   Both rode the coattails of great coaches and straight up sucked as HCs.  Both have oversized egos and believe they're smarter than everyone else.

What great coach did Prince ride the coattails of?  His mentor was Al Groh who got canned at Virginia and than was ran out with prejudice as DC at Georgia Tech.  Prince rode the cottails of someone who rode the coattails (Groh is a Parcells guy).

That is what pissed me off the most about Prince's hiring.  He never was part of a top program or had the kind of success anywhere to merit consideration for a BCS level head coaching job.
