brainstorming on infection rate in black americans, in no order:

urban population
public transit
diabetes, asthma, heart conditions
high % airport workers
religious

i did see one person on twitter speculating about a biochemical explanation for higher rates of confirmed infections for black americans.  not sure i found it super compelling, nor do i know the person's qualifications.

i don't know if this means shedding enough virus to infect someone else or just some detectable but unimportant amount, but this virus is kinda a dick, so i dunno.

There's also this

https://twitter.com/CoastalElite28/status/1246875517564813312

a consortium of states is a good idea.  wouldn't mind seeing that grow into something of a common market across the continent.  maybe even a currency union.

Worse, he has to come back in a few hours and pick up all our samples!

I missed why you are doing a test?  Are you sick or is Seattle actually testing en masse?

I’m doing this tomorrow.

Negative: SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) NOT detected

Please Note:
• The type of sample and testing used in this project is conducted as part of a public health surveillance
program in partnership with King County and other agencies. The testing you have received is not a
substitute for receiving personal medical care by a healthcare provider.
• Specimen Chain of Custody: The specimen tested was self-collected, self-labeled, and submitted to SCAN by
mail or delivery service. It was not collected, labeled, and transported by a licensed healthcare professional.
This may impact test results and false negative results cannot be excluded. Follow-up clinical testing may be
warranted.
• Specimen collection device: The mid-turbinate swab is not an FDA/CDC Emergency Use Authorization (EUA)
approved specimen type. Therefore, not detected/negative results may not exclude SARS-CoV-2 infection.
• “Positive” results may be verified by the Washington State Department of Health. This result should
be discussed with your healthcare provider if you have questions.
• If your test says “Not detected” it means that SARS-CoV-2 was not detected in our laboratory.
No test is perfect and there is a small chance that you do have the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19
with a negative test. This test does not use the standard way of collecting specimens by a health care provider,
and the sample was sent by mail or delivery service, not collected and transported in a healthcare setting.
Regardless of your test result, it’s best to stay home when you feel sick, and avoid contact with other people.
If you have other health problems or are very sick or are worried about your illness, you should contact your
healthcare provider. If your symptoms persist, you should discuss getting another test for COVID-19 with
your health care provider.
• If your test says “Inconclusive” it means that our laboratory test results for the SARS-CoV-2 target are not
certain.
No test is perfect and there is a chance that an inconclusive result could mean that you do have the SARSCoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. This test does not use the standard way of collecting specimens by a
health care provider, and the sample was sent by mail or delivery service, not collected and transported in a
healthcare setting. Regardless of your test result, it’s best to stay home when you feel sick, and avoid contact
with other people. If you have other health problems or are very sick or are worried about your illness, you
should contact your healthcare provider. If your symptoms persist, you should discuss getting another test
for COVID-19 with your health care provider.
• If your test says “Unable to be tested” it means that there was either not enough of the specimen or there
was an error in the test process.
Since testing was unable to be performed, there is a chance that you do have the SARS-CoV-2 virus that
causes COVID-19.
• Positive tests (shown as “DETECTED” or “Virus Detected”) will be reported to the appropriate state
and county Health Department by the testing facility. You DO NOT need to report these results yourself.
Public Health may follow up with you if your test is positive for novel coronavirus to ask you about your
illness and people you may have come in contact with.
• You can print out or email these test results to your health care provider.
Methodology of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Qual PCR:
This assay is designed to detect SARS-CoV-2 using reverse-transcription PCR. This assay relies on amplification
of the viral genome segments Orf1B and S with an internal human RNaseP amplification control. This test was
developed and its performance characteristics determined by the University of Washington’s Northwest Genomics
Center. This laboratory developed test is validated and has been submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration
for Emergency Use Authorization. The FDA’s independent review of the test validation is pending. This laboratory is
certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) as qualified to perform high complexity
clinical laboratory testing.

It's the most popular because it's the one magas have latched on to and turned into an us vs them issue. The mere mention that more information is needed is seen as an anti-trump statement.

no I mean I heard of it from a couple people before Trump mentioned it (from non-trumpers I work with). what you're describing is caused by Trump.

idk if hydroxychloroquine will save us all, but it would be absolutely great if it could for a couple of reasons: it's stupid cheap to make and it has 70 years worth of testing re. side effects.

if a new drug needs to be invented to treat this, it's going to be way more expensive and way slower/more mysterious.  that's not the worst thing in the world, but it's less convenient than the hydroxychloroquine scenario.

I'm not really prone to conspiracy theories, but I'm a little suspicious of some of the pushback on hydroxychloroquine. Lots of companies are hoping that they have the magic bullet to help solve this problem, and if hydroxychloroquine, ultimately, is the solution, that hurts their pocketbook.  If that's the magic bullet, a lot fewer people stand to make a lot less money.

You'd have to be really, really into conspiracy theories to think that if that thing were the silver bullet we wouldn't be sticking it in everyone.

No offense Dlew but people with way more money than the labs working on a silver bullet are going to simply be out of biz in 90 days.

All i'm saying is that there are plenty of interested parties hoping that that this 0.10 cent pill isn't the silver bullet.  I'd hope that there are greater checks on those incentives, and I'm sure there are, but it's worth keeping the economic aspect in mind as tons of competing research comes out.

Like I said, I'm not an expert on the medical aspect of this at all, but I do understand that it would be very convenient for the average JOE if hydroxychloroquine is helpful.  I was hopeful for that before Trump ever started talking about it.  If it doesn't work, that would suck for all of us except for the companies who stand to profit from alternative solutions (whether they're prophylactic or mitigative).

The politcization of hydroxychloroquine certainly doesn't help either.

No doubt there are competing interests at the table but, again, if this regiment were a silver bullet no amount of big pharma could keep it from being used.
