Treat the internet/social media with your kids like you would with crossing the street or riding a bike. Let them know what to look out for, dangers to avoid, how to operate safely in general. Just do what you can to make it as safe as possible without locking them in the house or holding their hands to cross the street the rest of their lives

I am starting to worry about what my kids will see on the internet. I remember seeing like goatse but things have escalated significantly from there. I was in college or the workforce when 2 girls 1 cup hit.  I don’t think kids will be completely ruined or totally warped forever but it can’t be great in the short run.
9th grade I was taking a thespian class and we were supposed to do a monologue.  I used the computer right by the theater and searched a fewgoodmen.com. IT WAS NOT WHAT I WANTED!

When I was in 7th grade, our social studies teacher told us to go to whitehouse.com to find information on the executive branch.

The studies on kids/teens and the impact social media has on them in pretty staggering.  Since I'm pro-science I'm not letting my kids have any social media accounts any time soon.

Yep, this is where I am too. I'll let them use some stuff eventually, but the studies are bad. I also don't want them to be huge dorks though. My kids are still pretty young and even if I didn't know, I could pick out their classmates that already have phones and use all of the social media stuff.

My youngest is in 6th grade and I have stopped worrying about any of it. Not worrying about policing stuff any longer has been AMAZING.

He started secretly watching Breaking Bad. When he confessed this to me kind of out of the blue, I was just like, "oh, yeah, I've seen most of that show." Now, we talk about the show a lot and he even put a Breaking Bad poster on his wall.

I also took him to see Bullet Train, which is rated R, because we both thought it looked like a fun movie. And it was indeed fun!

Can't wait until we hear about Lil' Chum and Chum's porn conversation.

My son learned a lot about right/wrong from social media itself. Like, gaming content creators will be like "dude, that's creepy" or pointing out that something is inappropriate or rude or porn or bullying or whatever.

My kids keep asking for Roblox. However, they don’t really know what it is & neither do I, so when they ask for help with it I have no idea what to tell them. I keep putting it off because we’ve either been sick or out of town for 3 straight months & for the next month I’m going to be gone for most of it for a funeral, work trip & vacation.

I generally agree with this. The question, much like in terms of riding a bike, crossing the street and staying home alone, is at what age do you start doing this. I imagine I have my kids ride bikes, cross the street and stay home alone at a younger age than average. However, my kids will definitely be older than average for when they have their own phone. I have seen very little to indicate that social media is good for kids.

My kids have a phone that they all share and is primarily used for them taking it with them when they go somewhere without us. There is no social media on it and we monitor the use of it.

Oh man. I did the exact same thing and finally relented. It was a grave error on my part. Kids absolutely love the crap out of Roblox. My kids would rather play Roblox for a half hour than do anything else in the world. Like anything. Even when they get to do really fun awesome crap, the moment they are finished, "dad can we get on our iPads and play Roblox". Like 0.00000000000000000001 seconds after anything, this is the response.

My oldest was really into anime, when she was in 6th grade one of her female classmates decided to show her hentai. I leaned what this was from my then 11 year old. She's still a fan of animation, but no longer produces or consumes anime.

I am king overprotective but I'm relatively fine with Roblox. They're pretty good with moderation and you can pretty easily see what they're doing on there. They generally will play at the same time and if they don't we require them to play from the living room couch.

Yeah I think our kids were 13 or 14 before we let them have Instagram. IMO that was a good age to understand the potential problems with social media and the internet while delaying it would lead to being left out of a lot with their friends. They're going to be on it eventually and that seemed like a good age to closely monitor but also make them feel like they have a bit of space.

True story. Just did birthday stuff for lil SF and 27 seconds after opening presents and going to grab some cake he asked if he could play Roblox.

What do kids do in it? Are they mostly building their own stuff like Minecraft or playing games other people have created?

My two teenagers are still Roblox enthusiasts and it is full of games people have created including First Person Shooters, Fortnite knockoffs, dating games, etc.  i do think there is some oversight and the 8 bit graphics limit how realistic anything is but there is content that parents will find objectionable.

Also, Roblox does not allow voice chat under 13 so make sure your elementary school kids are honest when signing up and that they don't have accounts you don't know about.

Increase in bugs at the SF house. Wearing masks at school and everywhere else made cold and flu season amazing.

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Not gonna get to go to the Bluey show in Des Moines like we thought we would :bawl: we've committed to going to the bowl game and Bluey is here December 27 & 28. They haven't announced dates for KC, Omaha, or Minneapolis but they'll be in DSM and Wichita, weird.
