Okay.

Well, I agree that Forbes would be a great replacement for oscar. He's near the top of any list I would have.

we can't do better than a 3rd year head coach from the southern conference

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

I've read on this blog that we can't even do as good as him.

People that are enamored with Forbes and think Jank is terrible are weird to me.

Glad we all agree Steve Henson is bad.

I don't see how anyone could agree that Henson is bad.

I like both of those.

FWIW, I'm considering Forbes (with Keatts) at the top of the "up and coming mid-major HC" category. I've adjusted my original up and comer list, I would put Forbes behind Miller. Part of why I moved Forbes up is his experience with a range of HCs and that he was known as a good recruiter (from what I've read) at those stops.

The top would be Hoiberg.

The best Huggins type hire is Sampson.

The best K-State connection hire is obviously Brad. Some may say Jank or the real big reach of Steve Henson.

The best up and comer coach is tougher. Archie Miller is clearly the best, but a long shot. Will Wade (Shaka's replacement at VCU) has had success, but at only 2 years each at 2 schools). Kevin Keatts at UNC Willmington looks like he might be a solid young coach. Some might say Dan Muller at Illinois State, but this is really his first really good year. I'm sure there are others and someone will only become an up and comer when they win a NCAA game or two as underdogs.

in the battle of the steves, i just don't see a big difference between the two career assistants.  what is it that makes forbes so much different than henson?

1st and foremost, Forbes is known for being a really good recruiter and landing kids at aTm, Tennessee, and Wichita State.

2nd, I like that all 3 high major programs he worked with were having high amounts of success while he was there.

Henson has been a career assistant for Lon and as far as I know hasn't been known as a key recruiter.

forbes did do really well at Tennessee until that show cause arrived.  but really, no one really knows the roll henson had in kruger's recruiting.  i'd have to think that kruger's top assistant played some roll in recruiting though, don't you?

I would hope so. It usually seems like if an assistant coach is a really good recruiter they develop a reputation for that and are known for it, I've never read anything like that about Henson. Also, my perception of guys that stick with one coach for a while before getting a HC job are probably colored a little bit by oscar. ie. oscar and Gene correlates to Steve and Lon, though that's probably not fair on my part.

I mentioned I was Forbes manager at Barton. His first year as head coach was my sophomore year. I arrived early before the school year and he had a scholarship open. He showed me tape of one guy (who probably would have been more helpful) but decided to bring in Gitonga Maina the African star from the movie "the Air Up There' with Kevin Bacon. I haven't heard from or about G in twenty years. This story made me sad:

http://www.si.com/college-basketball/2016/07/07/charles-gitonga-maina-air-there-where-are-they-now-kevin-bacon

Anyway, to answer a few questions posed earlier, Forbes connection to Martin is through Underwood. They were very close friends when Forbes was at BCCC and Underwood at DCCC. The difference I see between Forbes and Henson is the success at different stops. I don't know that Henson would be bad, but I think Forbes would do really well though I am admittedly bias.

forbes bounces around a lot, it seems like every couple years he's on to something new.  that's not concerning?  how much credit can we give him for impacting a program when he's only been at a place a year.
