There's some truth to that quote but if you don't take him at his word, what on earth are you voting for? It's mind blowing to me that a candidate can say "I'm going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it" and have no expectations that he is going to try to build a wall and have Mexico pay for it. I don't know how people could vote for a guy and then go "Well he wasn't being serious when he said these things but was serious when he said the things that I like."
All of this isn't a knock on Trump voters, but an effort to understand. Post-election Chicat's belief is still that Trump is a terrible candidate/future president but that the Democrats somehow did EVEN WORSE.
I'll attempt to explain. Simply put, most Trump voters, just like most other people, are not single issue voters. It's not like any of his supporters were on the fence between candidates, but the promise of the wall put them over the edge. That's just not the case.
The "wall" was only one facet of Trump's "eff the establishment" message. Trump won by adding to the typical GOP base a coalition of disaffected people living in the margins who ranged from Democrat-leaning to apolitical, but who innately sensed that something is
wrong with the direction of the country under Obama's leadership, and Hillary Clinton was just more of the same. It was irritating that the Obama admin seemed to care more about pet issues like transgender bathroom laws than jobs.
I have no doubt that some supporters will be disappointed if Trump doesn't build a physical wall spanning the entire US/Mexico border, but I think mainly they'll be happy to see a genuine effort at border enforcement and a relief that at least Hillary isn't in charge.
