We're not going to be forced into taking Clemson or someone else just to satisfy FSU.

This is just ridiculous. We would be lucky to have Clemson.

I don't disagree, but maybe some would prefer Louisville?

And maybe FSU doesn't want Clemson?  Maybe they feel like it should be Georgia Tech (for all we know)?

GT is actually the closest ACC school to FSU.  They are academically "superior".  They bring Atlanta.  They are a historical partner with ND (even if that relationship is currently dormant).

Think about it like this.  Let's just say that the best we can hope for is ND as a non-football member.  If we want them to schedule six Big 12 games per year, as is rumored, and they are a thirteenth partial member, this could be your lineup:

Texas (has a current scheduling agreement with ND)
Oklahoma (has a current scheduling agreement with ND)
FSU (would most like be a partner here because it would be a huge moneymaker for both programs)
Georgia Tech (this could allow them to easily rekindle the rivalry)

The last two games per year could be ND/TCU in Dallas, ND/KSU in KC, ND/WVU in Pittsburgh, etc.

If that's your mix of teams, ND barely has to change a single thing about what they do today, and they can fill out half of their schedule with Big 12 teams.  Sure, it would put them at a competitive disadvantage, but man, it would make NBC very happy, it would make ABC very happy, and everyone would get rich.

I know that everyone, including myself, has reservations about partial members, but other non-Clemson teams have their selling points.

I really don't think Kansas State would ever be one of Notre Dame's six Big 12 matchups. I would rather not have them at all than have them as a partial member.

I remember at one point in time (2005?) that we were in talks with ND, but it fell apart because at that time, Snyder didn't want to play in KC.  I think ND was also looking for a 2-for-1 with a game for us at Arrowhead.

A lot of games on ND's schedule are spoken for every year.  USC, Stanford, Navy, Mich St., Mich, Purdue.  That's six.  BYU has scheduled a long term deal.  OU and UT are on the board.  Add FSU and GT.  Then ND can fill it out with a couple of rummies like Tech in Dallas or ISU in Chicago.  All we'd really be doing is giving them a couple of teams at large neutral sites or in South Bend every year to fill out the remaining part of their schedule.  We may or may not ever make the cut, and I could care less as long as the checks get cashed.

Well, I don't, but who knows what some of these schools want?  OU was pushing for Louisville last fall.  Who knows why?

Yes, we even wanted BYU last year. Times have changed.

http://dudeofwv.blogspot.com/2012/06/big-12-is-about-to-make-big-mistake.html

Quote
What do Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Maryland  have in common?

For starters they are all hallowed institutions from the ACC with national championships in either football or basketball. They are also respected academic institutions and boast large TV markets, a solid recruiting base, and the desire to field championship level teams.

But they have one more thing in common – they all want out of the ACC and into the Big 12.

That’s right; the Big 12 could have Florida State and any one of the other three or the Big 12 could think bold and take all four.

Yet the Big 12 isn’t likely to expand anytime soon and the reason is Notre Dame.

The Big 12 has decided not to extend invitations to FSU, Clemson or anyone else until Notre Dame makes it future conference home known.

New Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby and Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds both think the Irish are close to joining the Big 12 as associate members and will follow later as a full member.

WVU doesn’t believe that. WVU has years of experience as a member of the beleaguered Big East and watched as Notre Dame sat on the sidelines and let the Big East fall apart.

Notre Dame could have saved the Big East at any point. The Irish could have kept Virginia Tech, Miami and Boston College from leaving during the first round of ACC expansion and they could have kept Pittsburgh and Syracuse from leaving last year.

The Irish did nothing and that’s just what they will do now.

I have no doubt that Jack Swarbrick is offering Bowlsby and Dodds assurances about Notre Dame. I have no doubt Swarbrick has told both men Notre Dame is Big 12 bound.

The problem is I have no doubt that Swarbrick is giving John Swofford the same assurances.

Bowlsby and Dodds are making the mistake of believing Notre Dame.

They don't know Notre Dame like WVU knows Notre Dame.

Both Bowlsby and Dodds are extremely intelligent men and proven leaders. Such men are not prone to fantasy or wishful thinking and not likely to have the wool pulled over their eyes by Notre Dame, but now it appears the Irish have hoodwinked the Big 12.

Notre Dame is lying to them while trying to work out better deals with both the ACC and NBC.

Perhaps Bowlsby and Dodds are blinded by thoughts of their legacies and what it would mean to land the Fighting Irish. Whatever motivates them to pander to Notre Dame they should remember just how fragile the conference was a year ago.

And while they sit and wait for Notre Dame the clock is about to expire on an opportunity of a life-time.

It's clear that the Irish prefer the ACC. It's clear that the only way the ACC would offer Notre Dame an associate membership is to keep FSU and Clemson from defecting.

It's clear to WVU that had the Big 12 extended the invitations to FSU and Clemson a month ago that Notre Dame wouldn't even be listening to John Swofford right now.

Adding Florida State and Clemson to the Big 12  cripples the ACC and permanently secures the future of the Big 12.

FSU and Clemson could be the biggest prize in the expansion contest and the Big 12 is in serious danger of blowing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Every day the Big 12 fails to invite FSU and Clemson is a day John Swofford uses to solidify his conference and  entice Notre Dame to join.

I understand the Big 12’s desire to add Notre Dame – I get it. What I don’t get is how the Big 12 can gamble their future on a sucker bet.

The Irish will never join a conference as full member unless they are forced to do so. But by inviting FSU and Clemson now, the Big 12 can eliminate the ACC as a viable home for the Irish.

Supposedly the Big 12 is dead set on not expanding past 12. That's a foolish position given what's at stake and who's interested. It's even more foolish to think Notre Dame will join the Big 12 as a full member.

I "had a clue" that Mizzou and aTm were going to go to the SEC when they were rumored to do so.  They had a better financial deal, and they were clearly upset with the Big 12.

I see similar things with FSU.  Just my two cents.

I don't get the impression that FSU is pissed off with the ACC.  Missouri had been voicing displeasure with the Big 8 and Big 12 for literally decades.  Texas A&M had been talking to the SEC off and on over the years ever since Arkansas left the SWC.  Both schools - admin and fanbases - had been upset with our conference for years.  They finally had their chance to get out and the overwhelming grassroots support for the move was a big part in making it happen.  If Mizzou fans don't go apeshit about getting out of the Big 12, there's a very real chance that Deaton would have kept them here.  And A&M fans had been playing second fiddle (or worse) for their entire existence.

Neither of those describe FSU's situation.  I do agree that FSU is and should be concerned about the money difference between what they get in the ACC and what their rivals get in the SEC, but I do not think there is an enormous push by the fanbase to make the move.  Whenever I go to an FSU board, it seems like their fans are about 50/50 on whether or not to think about joining the Big 12.  They have no natural or geographic rivals here.  They have no recruiting connections here.  They have no large fanbase living here.  They have no delusions of grandeur like MU or big brother butthurt like A&M.  They just want more money than what the ACC is currently offering, but I'm not sure if that's enough to cause them to uproot themselves and join a conference based in Texas and located almost entirely in the Central timezone.

Has anyone seen this yet?

College football playoff approved

After years of waiting and debating, college football gets a playoff system.
WASHINGTON (AP)

College football will finally have a playoff. Come 2014, the BCS is dead.

FOX SPORTS POLL

The four-team seeded playoff is ...
Awesome
Horrible
Don't care

A committee of university presidents on Tuesday approved a plan for a four-team playoff put forward by commissioners of the major football conferences.

The new system doesn't go too far, Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger said.

''It goes just the right amount,'' he said.

The move completes a six-month process for the commissioners, who have been working on a new way to determine a major college football champion after years of griping from fans.

''There were differences of views,'' Steger said. ''I think it would be a serious mistake to assume it was a rubber stamp.''

Instead of simply matching the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 teams in a championship game after the regular season, the way the Bowl Championship Series has done since 1998, the new format will create a pair of national semifinals.

College football fans have been clamoring for a playoff for years, and the BCS has been a constant target for criticism. Lawmakers have railed against it. A political action committee was formed, dedicated to its destruction. The Justice Department looked into whether it broke antitrust laws. Even President Obama said he wanted a playoff.

THE PLAYOFF IS HERE!
 •Four-team playoff approved
•Fiutak: What took so long?
•Fiutak: How committee should work

Now it's a reality.

No. 1 will play No. 4, and No. 2 will play No. 3 on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The sites of those games will rotate among the four current BCS bowls - Rose, Orange, Fiesta and Sugar - and two more to be determined.

The winners will advance to the championship on the first Monday in January that is six or more days after the last semifinal. The first championship Monday is set for Jan. 12, 2015.

The site of the title game will move around the way the Super Bowl does, with cities bidding for the right to host.

The teams will be selected by a committee, similar to the way the NCAA basketball tournament field is set. The men's tournament has 68 teams, and 37 at-large bids.

The football committee will have a much tougher task, trying to whittle the field down to four. Among the factors the committee will consider is won-loss record, strength of schedule, head-to-head results and whether a team is a conference champion

Yep, we will never get chosen for that ever, ever, ever.  What on earth makes anyone think that 4 at-large bids are going to be chosen fairly now, when they never have been before?

I'm not all that concerned as long as the big 12 gets 1-2 teams in every year.  $$$$$$
