The thing is, ND is no threat. They haven't been for some time. UT would probably wipe the floor with them in every sport. They would probably like beating up a higher profile team.
This is sort of the point I am poorly attempting to make.  Texas is arguably the best recruting state in the land.  Not every tex high school athlete (football, basketball, baseball, soccer, track, etc.) can go to UT.  ND will surely improve talent by opening roads there since they would be just as powerful a draw for many kids now that they play all over their backyard each year.  Why would UT wake that giant, and then have to actually have a check/balance to all their power moves?  That could also play into not being able to have all the offices and championship games in the south each year.  Maybe I'm way off, but I don't see the upside for UT.  Sure, it would be more fun/equal for everybody else, but what about UT?  Typically, a ully keeps his foot on your throat.  He doesn't let you up, nd then go look for somebody bigger.

there is absolutely nothing inevitable about nd joining a conference.  it's far closer to impossible.
this is where i am at.  notre dame has the money, what they need to do is protect their brand.
Agree.  Easier to win games of their choosing than to play UT/OU/OSU/KSU/KU every year in football and basketball.

This is something I've been thinking about for awhile.  If, and I think this is the case, major college football is eventually going to go a 64 or 72 team group of teams that compete at the highest level, a major overhaul needs to take place.  In this situation continuing on with the current conferences (expanding/contracting them) is a faulty choice.  The way things are going about now is basically a money grab, and lacks the unity and a continuity for something of this magnitude to work.

A better proposal would be for the Presidents, ADs, etc of all teams even minutely interested to come together for a series (just a few would not be enough for this type realignment), of meetings and negotiations to formulate the ground rules for participating with in the proposed select group of college football.  In these meetings, certain requirements i.e. stadium size, athletic budget, football budget, etc. would be established.  Certain schools would be nowhere near being able to meet these requirements, and some that are borderline would opt not to even be considered.  This wouldn't be some SEC wants team x, etc type of thing.  No one will be inviting anyone or not inviting anyone to anything, it would be based on the decided requirements and which teams actually wanted to participate.

Once the decided number of teams is decided upon, the group would then sell media rights, set up conferences/ divisions, a playoff/ championship, etc.  All money acquired from media, etc. would be EQUALLY shared between all participatory schools.  The only exception to this would be additional monetary gained by teams during the playoffs.  This money would not be allocated to schools who failed to make said playoffs.  Eventually everyone involved would make increasingly lucrative profits and all schools involved would benefit greatly.

By bypassing current conferences looking out for themselves, and teams jumping for money grabs this would lead to a stronger, more viable college football than we have seen up to this point.

Conferences would be divided as much as possible by region, keeping current rivalries intact, accounting for travel expenses, etc.  This would help ensure a better overall product and as the group as a whole is not squabble for monetary gains between them.  I have no idea what the final regions/ conferences/ divisions or what you might call them would be.

I realize that ND plays big east.  It was a generalized statement, and a mistake to compare.  Obviously, this discussion is 95% to do with football.  I find it highly ironic that I'm called "effing stupid" at the very same time staples here are arguing that ND would join our conference, and that UT would actually invite them.  This could VERY easily be in the "GPC thread of the day" forum.

LOL at thinking UT wouldn't want ND. ND doesn't want us, but everyone in this conference wants them.

Big East Commissioner John Marinatto says he has been in constant contact with Dan Beebe of the Big 12 and John Swofford of the Atlantic Coast Conference in recent days and has suggested the three meet to discuss conference realignment.

Marinatto didn't reveal details about his conversations with his fellow commissioners but said, "I thought it would be important for us to meet face-to-face and take the lead in trying to do things the right way."

Beebe's conference, which nearly was wiped out last year when the Pac-10 expanded, is in danger of losing Texas A&M to the Southeastern Conference.

If the Aggies end up in the SEC, the league would likely need to add at least one more member.

think he's going to be the sacrificial lamb and push his football schools to the ACC and Big12 while the basketball only Big East lives on?

Maybe he wants to set up the Big 12/Big East Network. Remember when we approached the Pac 10 about a network and they decided they would rather just poach the Big 12 South?

Never met a guy that advocated for the destruction of his own job.  Unless, he's thinking a good "retirement" gig would be being the commish of a league with no football to worry about....just sort of cruise around and brow beat the AD's to play a tougher non-con to get the RPI up.  That's basically it, isn't it?
