This is something I've been thinking about for awhile. If, and I think this is the case, major college football is eventually going to go a 64 or 72 team group of teams that compete at the highest level, a major overhaul needs to take place. In this situation continuing on with the current conferences (expanding/contracting them) is a faulty choice. The way things are going about now is basically a money grab, and lacks the unity and a continuity for something of this magnitude to work.
A better proposal would be for the Presidents, ADs, etc of all teams even minutely interested to come together for a series (just a few would not be enough for this type realignment), of meetings and negotiations to formulate the ground rules for participating with in the proposed select group of college football. In these meetings, certain requirements i.e. stadium size, athletic budget, football budget, etc. would be established. Certain schools would be nowhere near being able to meet these requirements, and some that are borderline would opt not to even be considered. This wouldn't be some SEC wants team x, etc type of thing. No one will be inviting anyone or not inviting anyone to anything, it would be based on the decided requirements and which teams actually wanted to participate.
Once the decided number of teams is decided upon, the group would then sell media rights, set up conferences/ divisions, a playoff/ championship, etc. All money acquired from media, etc. would be EQUALLY shared between all participatory schools. The only exception to this would be additional monetary gained by teams during the playoffs. This money would not be allocated to schools who failed to make said playoffs. Eventually everyone involved would make increasingly lucrative profits and all schools involved would benefit greatly.
By bypassing current conferences looking out for themselves, and teams jumping for money grabs this would lead to a stronger, more viable college football than we have seen up to this point.
Conferences would be divided as much as possible by region, keeping current rivalries intact, accounting for travel expenses, etc. This would help ensure a better overall product and as the group as a whole is not squabble for monetary gains between them. I have no idea what the final regions/ conferences/ divisions or what you might call them would be.
