Utah State has historically been a bottom 10 job--WAY behind Utah and BYU on the in-state totem pole, a recruiting base only slightly better than Idaho's, inferior conference membership--and they just ran a train on the WAC which featured two fairly decent teams in San Jose State and Louisiana Tech. I'd say Wisconsin made a pretty good hire aside from having to pay the buyout on his recent extension (I think that's true, right?)

They should have beat Wisconsin, if their kicker didn't shank that game winner.

Great coaches are usually smart, arrogant, and at least a little bit of a dick. So, no Klein.

I think Anderson is a pretty good coach who will do just fine at Wisconsin.

Whether he is a good coach or not isn't really the point, there are a lot of coaches with good to great results.  The question is should a program like Wisconsin have made a splashier hire.  There are programs that have a lot less to offer that Wiscy but made more notable hires.  You wouldn't think Wisconsin would be the program to go to the standard, let's just find a good mid major coach who has had a couple of good years.

I thought that too, but if what Bret said about the rules of paying assistant coaches is true, then they would have had a hell of time getting a splashy hire.  No splashy hire would go to Wisconsin where they are forced to try and win with 2nd rate assistants and constantly losing the good ones to higher paying jobs.

Wiscy shouldn't have to make the hire they did, but they are hurting themselves with their own stupid rules.

So FR, you think Snyder is a little bit of a dick and arrogant? And you think Klein is A) not that smart B) not arrogant and C) not a little bit of a dick or D) all of the above?

I think different players are motivated by different things and different types of coaches. Maybe Snyder's greatest asset is his ability to find the ones who will respond to his style.

Yea he is for sure.  The mentorship thing I think generally has the intended effect on the casual fan that he is some kind of saint.

Yes to the Snyder question.  For Klein it is definitely B & C and maybe it's D.

Which takes me back to my post about them being poors

Who should they have hired, then?

I don't rough ridin' know, that was the point.  Did anyone think Arkansas was going to get Bielma?  They aimed high and paid for a proven coach.  They used their status of a have to get a coach that their entire fanbase would be excited about.  Wisconsin is a top 15 program, they have been to 3 straight Rose Bowls.  Im not saying this dude will blow, I'm saying the hire is one that Indiana or Minnesota would make because they have to, Wisconsin didn't have to.

I think Wisconsin is one of those weird middle ground schools where it would be tough to hire anyways, much less following 3 rose bowls.  They've overachieved the past few years and with Meyer at OSU, its going to be harder to do.  I think the Utah St guy is a great hire because Defense/running is what they do there.

Yes. I can see him as a great #2 guy.

I think he would be very easy to read and defend on the other sideline. I don't see him going outside of his if A then B if C then D.

Solid point. Maybe a good QB coach or something. Basically, just not a head coach type.

Most coaches start out that way.  Don't think I'll see the day he would become our head coach.
