Don't millennials/genZers pretty much have to have more education? Not sure if it's just hyperbole but I keep hearing more and more stories of positions requiring a 4 yr degree when the job description quite frankly doesn't even require a full high school education.
One primary source anecdote: Mrs BAC (works for Satan in O&G) mentioned that they have job openings for admins. She also noted that all of the current admins... Most of which have been working there between 15-20 years, are not qualified for the new hire admin positions they are looking to fill

Probably some hyperbole, but younger millennials gen z and their parents have probably been hoodwinked a bit in this regard. There are a lot of god jobs out there that don’t require university or advanced degrees, but most of the managerial/hr/etc. type jobs do. Couple that with the high price of college nowadays and in recent times and the number of people getting worthless degrees or degrees for low-paying sectors and there you have it.

There are tons of good jobs in tech, manufacturing and the trades that don’t require advanced degrees.

Imo the trades are only going to become more valuable and less and less people will be able to do even the most menial of tasks in the future.

education equals wealth. always has. always will.

Prove that education and income are not simply correlated.

For example, I think Sweden has set a great example by partially privatizing their Social Security system.
I admit I started it, but let’s not pit this up.

I’m curious what you think about the model for youth sports as compared with our pay to play system. I think rec leagues from our youth are probably overly romanticized but covid for sure killed off MPRD sports in MHK and I think that was a loss for the community.

I also think generally that open gyms or pick up for basketball and regular pick up games for soccer and vital for the health of the sports. I think we are too far gone on baseball in the states but pick up game culture is sports culture for most of the world.

I do not particularly like pay for play. I am most familiar with youth soccer and my thoughts will primarily be based off my experiences in youth soccer.

Nothing is going to change in US youth soccer until there is the introduction of solidarity payments as there is in much of the world of soccer. There is a good chance that this is what makes the facilities in Bryne, Norway possible. The US Soccer Federation should be handsomely rewarding clubs who produce players that make the various national teams and/or play at a high level. They have a lot of money and waste it on their cronies. There is never going to be some sort of government support for youth sports and I wouldn't be in favor of it. Solidarity payments would completely change how youth soccer operates.

I also am not convinced that pick up game culture is the sports culture in Europe. I'm sure there are plenty of kids playing pick up soccer games, but the ones that are good are going to club Academies at young ages.

Is it that hard to believe we could learn something from the Nordics? I think we could learn a lot.

Although their customs on not feeding guests is horrendous.

Who is saying we can't learn anything from the Nordics?

I saw a thread about youth soccer in the 12,000 person town Erling Haaland grew up in and that sounded idyllic.

Caveats— I don’t know if it is accurate and I am generalizing

They had kids in youth soccer from about 6 on. They built a dome for soccer in the middle of town (it is Norway). They had an excellent coach. They only practiced 2x a week but left the doors unlocked to the facility so it was open access pretty much 24/7. They had pickup games every Saturday. They did not cut, they let kids choose how often they came to practice when they were like 11-12, 2x a week or 4x a week. Again they didn’t cut and they only started competing in tournaments regionally at 13+. I don’t know what the fees were, but it seemed like most of the expenditures were public not pay to play.

That sounds better in pretty much every way.

And it produced several pros, not just Haaland. I don’t care if my kid plays beyond HS or even in HS if they do more than ride the bench tbh, I just want them to have something they can get better at that is active and with a team.

Are there facilities and a set up like this in this town for football, basketball, hockey, baseball, softball and volleyball as well?

Seems weird to build up a program to be a perennial top 20 team, win a Natty, and bail for another program.  How often does that happen?  I don't think very often which is why I don't see Drew leaving Baylor.  Seems like he has a good thing going and he can be there as long as he wants with limited pressure from fans/AD/UP.
This is true but Baylor is arguably the "lowest profile" school to win a championship in recent memory. Villanova is probably the closest comparison?

Not sure school's profile matters anymore if you have NIL support + fan/AD/UP support.  I think this is why we have seen some hall of fame coaches retire in the last couple years.  I don't think Kentucky/KU/UCLA/Duke/Michigan State/North Carolina names will continue to hold the weight they used to.  The "name" is no longer needed to bring in great players and contend for titles.  The last two years represent the new NIL landscape, and I don't think many of us would have predicted not a single Blue Blood (UCONN is now BB though) making the FF.

2024 FF Teams:
Bama, Purdue, NC State, and UCONN

2023 FF Teams:
SDST, Miami, FIU, and UCONN

I think long term, NIL support will be more closely related to profile. Higher profile/blue bloods will win in the NIL/Portal era.
:nono:
NIL money will be king, program pedigree will be down the list of priorities for top recruits.  What WILL be a deciding factor is the number of players the program that land in the NBA.  McDonalds All-Americans don't go to Lawrentucky because of it's atmosphere or tradition, they go to KU because KU have a lot of players that make it to the NBA.  When the number of players KU puts in the NBA declines, so will recruiting.

I don't disagree with anything you're saying, I just expect that in the long term NIL money and program pedigree will be more closely related than they might be now.

The turning point will be when schools are able to pay their players directly. Schools outside of the Big 10 and SEC can keep up with NIL, but they can't keep up with tv money.
that tv money that you’re talking about is already spoken for elsewhere.  so for your scenario to play out, something will have to give.

I think coaching salaries are going to give.

Old college/hs bats were hotter than any bat a hs or college player can use today. There were no certifications, and the technology was pretty advanced at that point. Hs and College players were also using drop 5s.

The first certification was BESR, which tamed the bats and required hs/college players to use drop 3 bats.

Several years later BBCOR became the certification, and deaded bats even more. So, now the bat companies do all they can to max out the bats within the BBCOR certification. So they come out with new bats all the time, and new technology, but it really doesn’t amount to much other than combinations of swing-weight, sweet-spot/forgiveness, and pop. Today’s bats can’t hold a candle to the bats of the late 90s and early 2000s.

It’s different for USSSA certification, which is what little kids use, especially competitive teams. They make those bats as hot as they can and turn youth baseball into an industrial complex for rich suburbanites. USSSA cert is generally for -10 to -5 bats.

Compare a drop 5 usssa to a drop 3 BBCOR and you will see the difference immediately.

There is also USA baseball certification for little league, etc. which significantly deadens the bat and minimizes forgiveness and sweetspot.

Edit: every so often a USSSA bat will be released that is deemed “too hot” and get removed from tournament use.
thanks, very helpful.  you also touched on a concern I had but didn’t express and that is what you’re calling the industrial complex for the steve dave’s of the world.
One of the numerous reasons I despise youth sports in its current form

What would youth sports be in its ideal form for you?

United are currently giving up between 20-30 shots per game which is among the worst in all of Europe. This has been mitigated in part by Onana who has settled in and been solid in goal. United also look like scoring at least 2 goals themselves per game. It's just pure chaos - which brings me back to the feeling that Ten Hag has given up. Not sure he'll survive the summer with new ownership.

Watched the Old Firm highlights too yesterday. What a game. Why did they get rid of away fans for this fixture? Sounded like they're bringing them back soon though.

I listen to this podcast called talk of the devils it's Manchester based, from the athletic. Anyway, they're pretty plugged in and they say that Radcliffe is bringing him back.

That is great to hear that they're likely to bring Ten Hag back.

Even cheaper.

Receivers it will be

Rice
Hollywood
Draft Pick
Watson
Moore
Hardman/James/Toney - one of these

I think it will be Moore and Toney as the #5 and #6 receivers. Moore has a $1.3 million in pay due with a $1.7 million cap hit that won't change if he's not on the roster. Toney has $2.5 million in salary due with a $2.5 million cap hit that won't change if he's not on the roster. I can't imagine taking $4.2 million in dead money to cut your 5th and 6th receivers.

They're both young, and particularly with Toney, there is a lot of talent there that has the potential to be unlocked. Toney is also in a contract year which hopefully will bring out the best in him.

Moore makes 1.7 million next year. He'll be back and will be on the roster.

Moore will make $1.3 million next year. I agree that he very likely will be back and on the roster.

I think I need double the money right now, adjusted for inflation.

So, if I earn 0.03 over inflation for 12 years then (1.03)^12 = 2.022469067498369 times my present value.

1.03^12 = 1.425760886846178945447841 times your PV. If you want need to double your money in 12 years (assuming no further contributions), you need to have a real return of roughly 6% (72/6 = 12).

How much does a High Deductible plan run you on the open market right now?

A guy I know looked into this in October.  He is 60yo and he said his was going to be $990/mo.

I realize that's a lot of money but seems pretty reasonable for a male that age. Obviously don't know the deductible or program info or anything.

It was a catastrophe plan.  I think he said the deductable was $7k, didn't include vision or dental.

A $7000 deductible is not a catastrophic plan. A catastrophic plan would be a minimum of a $25,000 deductible and more like a $50,000 deductible.

what if the chiefs kicked a field goal and tied it up, then neither team scored in the 2nd quarter of OT.  would they drag usher's ass back out on the field for a 2nd half time show?  get Swift to sing from her suite?

My understanding is that an additional half would start after a two-minute break. The team team that did not choose first at the beginning of OT (possess the ball or direction) would get to choose at the beginning of the third OT period. There would be a kickoff to start it like there would be at the beginning of a regulation half.

Have to give them credit for coming out bound and determined to prove my point.

My daughter is playing in the Winter Magic indoor soccer tournament next weekend. She has a game that kicks off at 10:45 p.m. next Friday. Pretty sure the whole family won't be going to that game.

we've played in that before, don't think in any tourney we've ever had a start later than 9pm (which is still too late).  that time sounds like a typo

Definitely not a typo. Also, not the latest kickoff time on Friday! (11:00 p.m.)

I've never had a kickoff that late for an outdoor tournament, but even those are starting to get later. There were 9:30 p.m. games at the MAG this past fall. Tournaments in Kansas City are getting more and more popular for out of region teams. There are a lot of teams in most of the big tournaments which gives you competitive brackets and this is drawing teams from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Iowa, South Dakota, Illinois and Minnesota.

I've been the biggest MLS honk in the great plains, but the league is really starting to piss me off.
Can you explain to me, a dumb guy, why the European promotion/relegation model and calendar wouldn't work?

The calendar and the promotion/relegation model could very well work in the US. The reasons they likely won't be implemented have to do with money and the status of MLS in US sports.

Of the two, I think it is more likely that the calendar could get changed to match the European calendar. However, the reason this probably won't happen is that the current MLS calendar limits competition with the NFL. There is going to always be some overlap between the two seasons, but the current MLS calendar minimizes that. Also, a good amount of the overlap is the MLS playoffs, which has more draw than regular season games. Additionally, with a large part of the regular season in the summer, the only main competition is baseball for a few months. I also think the desire to limit cold-weather games in December, January and February plays into the current calendar. I imagine the thinking is that the cold weather would limit attendance. There could also be an argument about the risk of injury in cold weather. Even the NFL doesn't play any cold weather games in February.

I would love for promotion/relegation to be put into the US Soccer pyramid. It's not going to happen, though. MLS owners would be putting too much money at risk to ever endorse it. The revenue hit that would come with being relegated would be huge and no businessman is ever going to agree to introduce that risk. There is the potential that promotion/relegation would increase interest and grow the game, but I think that would be very limited. The people that care about it are likely already soccer fans and a lot of non-soccer fans don't even know what it is.

In terms of promotion/relegation, I think a more likely outcome is that leagues like the Premier League will get rid of it. I'm not saying that will happen, but it is more likely than MLS introducing promotion/relegation.

Who is the best offensive skill player the chiefs have drafted post Mahomes? Pacheco?

If you're considering the value of the round, then yes. if you're not considering round I'd say Rice is the best. He's going to have the best WR season by a rookie in team history. Hunt was same year as Pat so I guess he doesn't count.

Also looking back, Chiefs had Marcus Peters, Chris Jones, and Pat as first round picks in a 3 year stretch. Wild.

Chris Jones was drafted in the 2nd round.

Andy punting from the MFing 39 yard line is what sent me even more than the fumble, INT, or drops.

It was bad. I'm guessing if it's good weather he tries a FG since it was like 4th and 10 I think.

Pretty sure it was 4th and 4.
