This whole tatto thing reeminds me of the looking for skin imperfections to expose witches as suggested in the witch-hunting manual Malleus Maleficarum. Of course everyone has a wart, scar or weird skin thing the witch hunters could ID as a mark left by the devil. Burned a lot of women this way.
