I enjoy popping my collar to foreign people about the Olympics.  I purposefully make it known that I don't know WTF is going on in the Olympics but that I'm sure USA! is dominating whatever country they are unfortunate enough to be from.  Made this German girl very angry two years ago during the summer games doing this.

Summer Olympics = people doing stuff I can do better than I could ever do it
Winter Olympics = people doing stuff I can't/will never do.

Winter Olympics are almost like the Guinness World Records version of Olympics. 25 saltines in a minute/world record luge time? Congrats, I guess you're the best at that.

You could do any of it if you wanted to (or at least try to).  What you're really saying is that you don't want to do things like ski or ice skate.  But do you really want to do things like run around a track or throw crap really far?
Title: Re: olympics
Post by: michigancat on February 18, 2010, 07:05:48 AM
Winter sports all seem like something you'd need to be rich to get good at.  Except maybe speed skating.(?)

Summer sports mostly require a shoe or ball and a flat surface.  Anyone can do a summer sport.  (except maybe equestrian(?))

I have the means to collect coins.  That doesn't mean I want to watch people do it on TV.  I want to ski, but I don't want to run.  I watch them both.  For me, competition is competition.  I find both olympics equally compelling.

My wife is Lebanese. They just root for Brazil in the World Cup, constantly apologize for France, and brush off any criticism by pointing out that they're richer and better looking than everyone else (plus, she's like a Macgyver with explosives and what not so if I push her too far she'll jerry-rig my coffee pot and blow my eyebrows off again).

Glad you asked.  We return the silver medalist ice dancers who also won the world title in 2011.  The figure skating squad is young but poised to do big things.  Lotta question marks on the men's side.

This Olympics will have a team medal, which is a new for the event.  Team USA is a favorite to win in.  U S A!  U S A!

I haven't read a single article or heard a single podcast that lists us as even winning a medal. We have no scoring and a very unproven blue line. Our goaltending is a huge strength with Miller, our backups are trash, but Finland may be Bette there.

No we didn't, or the time before that, or before that, or before that, so on so forth. They didn't make a Disney movie called Miracle because we're some kind of gold medal juggernaut. Its been 42 years since we have even won a medal in a non North American Olympics.

Norway, Germany, and Canada usually pick up a crap ton of medals in the skiing events. I'm surprised USA is projected so high.

Poor Russians. Ever since the fall of the USSR, those cats can't compete.

I take a mild interest in Winter Olympics just because I enjoy America kicking ass, but Summer's where it's at.

Summer Olympics usually fall in a time where there is baseball, preseason NFL, fantasy drafts, summer workouts for the KSU Cat football team, and its nice out so you do outdoor stuff a lot.

Winter 'lympics are when its cold out and only thing competing is hobby sport.

No you can't. Basketball yes (but also hockey).

Swimming and track maybe once in a blue moon. Olympic volleyball (men's specifically) is miles more interesting and fun to watch than college vball. Skiing and related events are on TV more than the majority of summer events. Sorry but you winter lovers are just dumb. (facts, not my opinion)

Sure the whole communist revolution glossed over a lot of the not so great parts, but really, the whole history of Russia and their long use of serfdom well after industrialization hit Europe meant a lot of brushing over the worst of oppressive regimes, but it was kinda of nice that they owned that era instead of running away from it (The Soviet era parade stuff ). It was kinda fun to listen to the backhanded compliments from Lauer and that one lady who lived in Soviet Russia for like 4 years, until after an hour of it that it really got annoying, especially for the whole striking part of Russian Revolution, which was done artfully amazingly. What I kept thinking about our commentary was how this must be what it's like for all the countries who hate us when we put on shows like this. Also, it was kinda fun to see teams come in in Cyrillic alphabet order, just fascinating seeing it be very out of order to us, and led to a few interesting teams come out after one another (Israel-Iran, Jamaica being essentially last next to Russia).

:flush:

First of all what this author minimized as dirt in the pipes or rusty pipes is an outright lie. That writer was told not to put the water on her face because it contained something unsafe, she ran the water when she got to the room and then we have the famous water picture. The lady was told there was something unsafe in the water, not dirt. How in the hell can these people in their hotel rooms boil their damn water.

The bigger point that she conveniently ignores is that Russia bid for these Olympics with the intent of profiting off of the people complaining about the problems. They have a stray dog issue because they displaced thousands of people who couldn't afford to take their dogs with them. This is the most expensive Olympics ever, summer & winter. They built a highway that exceeded the entire cost of the Vancouver games. They moved out poor people & last I checked these hotels and restaurants aren't free. They aren't hosting a nun summit at no cost, they are hosting the Olympics if they didn't want the Olympics they shouldn't have bid on them. She should spend her time questioning why things are so sorry with all of the money they spent.

Reading her author profile the" I'm better than all of you" tone isn't surprising

As long as the mountains have snow, why does it matter?  All other events are in temperature controlled arenas.

That said, Sochi is nothing like Vancouver or Salt Lake.  It's a subtropical climate with avg winter temps above 50 degrees.

On the whole, they were slightly better.  We got both goals in power plays.  Russo had a third, go ahead goal, that was disallowed for some reason.  Something about the net being disconnected.  Not really sure.

Yea, I think The Czechs or Finns winning gold would still be a mild surprise. They do definitely have the ability but I don't think to many people would bet on it.

Switzerland seems to be the up and comer. The way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if they're better than both Czech Rep and Finland in 8 years.

Entirely possible, and without knowing the pulse of hockey in Switzerland I have no idea what they're youth programs are like. Was simply basing the thought they could be one of the better countries in the upcoming years based on there being some quality young Swiss talent for the first time as long as I've been paying attention to hockey.

NBC did an amazing story on the us team, Davis & White. They have been dancing together since they were little kids, it was a very cute and amazing story at the same time. It was nice to see Meryl Davis not in her ice dancing garb, because she looks freakish in that makeup.

I'm also fascinated that the two best pairs in the world, the aforementioned Davis & White and a Canadian pair, share the same coach & practice rink

that's all I got ice dancing is boring

they poor money into Swiss Hockey, they've been okay during the world juniors the last few years but if they want to go to the next level they need more players to develop in North America or the KHL. They keep almost all of their players domestically in a league that's almost entirely Swiss. That's good for developing players within that system but it isn't good for developing individual talent, it's exactly why their impact players the last 16 years have only been goalies.

Guys the women's hockey gold medal final between USA and Canada is just underway and you gotta watch it. This is really the biggest rivalry in hockey men's or women's. These are the only two good countries in women's hockey and unlike the men the Americans and Canadians don't play together in a domestic league, this is the pinnacle of women's hockey.

These two sides got into a line brawl, a fight comprised of all players on the ice, just a month ago. The line brawl wasn't basketball fighting either, these girls were throwing haymakers. These teams HATE each other.

GO USA!

Just getting to start watching the game, but ice hockey is one of the few team sports I enjoy watching the women's version almost as much as the men, especially when USA/Canada games are on. I just wish there was a few more quality teams. It seemed the rest of the field was slightly improved from 4 years ago so maybe there's hope.

Better than the system of ranking only by golds. If the other medals don't mean anything why do they give them out? Ideally it would be Gold: 3 Silver: 2 Bronze: 1.

it's actually a good question, some of them play in a "professional" league with 5 Canadian teams and a team in Boston, but not all play because they don't pay a salary, they only cover some expenses, the ladies have to buy their own sticks. They get a stipend for playing on the national team and they play into the spring with the annual world championships. Most of them work real jobs and play in mens leagues.

Yea, was actually a legit good question. Also should point out many of them are still playing collegiate hockey.

I stick by my statement earlier than I enjoy watching women's hockey almost as much as men's. I think it's the women's sport that deserves a true professional league the most but unless hockey in general can gain a larger following in the US it won't happen for awhile.
Title: Re: olympics
Post by: Bloodfart on February 20, 2014, 08:00:00 PM
I'm not sure why I enjoyed watching that women's championship game more than any NHL game I've ever watched.  Maybe it was because the camera could actually keep up with the puck movement and I wasn't staring at the opposite end of the rink where I thought the puck was but it's really at the other end of the rink.   I don't watch a lot of hockey tho so maybe it's just me being a rube.  :dunno:

Same.  I think I've watched about 30 total minutes of the Winter Olympics...all of which have been while sitting in a restaurant/bar setting.  I chalk the rest of the non-watching time due to house remodel.

sorta, yeah. They are playing in USA Hockey leagues and tournaments though. Wichita Ice Center didn't have any USAH adult programs when I was there. When my wife played she was on a very good women's team that beat mens teams, they went to a USAH womens tournament in St. Paul and it was predictably ugly.

that sport is completely confounding to me, controlling that 40 lb a stone, man. And the sweeping thing, do they shave the ice and leave the shavings on? The ice seems like what hockey ice would be like if it were never zambonied

Is this where we talk about the Olympic roster? Other than Stepan and Howard I'm pretty happy with the roster. Would've liked Bobby Ryan too but I can see why he was left off.

Keith Yandle was royally mumped. The highest scoring American defenseman the last 5 years. Brooks Orpik, wtf? The Penguins GM and head coach a part of the process and two penguins defenders were seleted who habe spent the better part of the winter hurt. Also eff Brian Burke

http://espn.go.com/olympics/hockey/story/_/id/10195703/how-us-hockey-team-bound-sochi-olympics-was-named

I sincerely hope the Americans lose and give up a ton of goals doing so, what a horrific way to compose a team. I will be cheering for Oliver Ekman-Larsson and team Sweeden.

Jack Johnson was the biggest snub in my opinion. and yeah, the penguins thing is very wtf. ill still root for team USA.

Jack Johnson only has 11 points and a +/- of -12. If they were looking for stay home defensemen they could do and did better than Jack Johnson. Keith Yandle is without a doubt the best American scoring defender. We don't have the most skilled forwards one would guess they would pick the most skilled defenseman available.

Eh, Yandle wouldn't have changed the outcome of either game IMO. He may have given them an extra scoring chance or 2 yesterday but the way Price was playing I don't think it would have mattered. Today they just didn't look like they gave a damn.

less about Yandle and more about the issues on how the roster was constructed and the issues they would have

They cared today, they just folded up and quit when they had adversity. Did you hear the post game interview with Parise, because thats what he said? Kane's hack and wack act in the 3rd period was deplorable and a sure sign they cared.

Yandle was the only one you really brought up as being an issue with the roster construction and like I said, he really wouldn't have made a difference. With the current crop of American players I think they built the roster basically how they needed to to have a chance.

They may have cared, but that there was definitely not the same intensity as there was in the semis. I also don't blame them too much for just folding up in the third. Most of those guys are getting ready to head back to teams that will be right in the thick of battles for playoff spots and seedlings and a Stanley Cup means a lot more than a bronze medal.

Kane was pretty bad in the 3rd, but as a Blues fan I'm not a big fan of his anyways.

I said this team would have trouble scoring goals

the Fins play in the NHL too, that's a wack excuse, fact is that team had quitters with no heart and don't care as much as playing for their country as other nations, Russia was afflicted with the same thing

I won't argue with that, but I still believe this was about as good a team as the US could put on the ice right now. And honestly, a bronze means a lot more for a country like Finland than it does for the USA.

I also think it's a little harsh to dump the whole team in that categories. There where a few players who where giving everything they had up until it became painfully obvious that others had quit.

Why is it called a "doping test" if he just tested positive for allergy medication? I really don't know.

is that a serious question, I just told you? The active ingredient in Zyrtec is a banned substance by the IOC. also worth noting that Backstrom used this in the Vancouver Olympics as well.

More relevantly, an IIHF doctor called Backstrom "an innocent victim of circumstances." He, of course, is upset.

"I was ready to play probably the biggest game of my career, and 2 1/2 hours before game I got pulled aside," he said. "It’s sad."

This Russian figure skating saga is absolutely insane.

After they forced the 15 year old to be a drug cheat, then forced her to compete after she tested positive and have the weight of the world on her shoulders, she very predictively choked. Her Russian teammate who got the gold is crying and they aren't tears of joy, and no one is comforting her, she's just standing in a room, hugging a stuffed animal.

Her other Russian teammate who got silver spent half an hour yelling at Russian coaches and officials and said she refused to go to the medal stand because she didn't deserve silver, I guess she set an Olympic record for most quads landed in one competition.

I didn't either until I read twitter and NBC played a clip of her press conference.

Quote
With all the attention on 15-year-old prodigy Kamila Valieva, who in the wake of a doping scandal slipped to the ice and tumbled to fourth after topping the standings in the short programme, Trusova's moment of despair almost went unnoticed.

"Everyone has a gold medal, everyone, but not me. I hate skating. I hate it. I hate this sport. I will never skate again. Never," Trusova said as she briefly left the sight of Eteri Tutberidze, who coaches her, Shcherbakova and Valieva.

"It's impossible. That's now how it should be."

Trusova, the world championships' bronze medallist, elaborated in the post-event news conference, where she was also close to tears.

"I haven't been winning major events for three years. I always try to reach a goal, I always add more quads," the 17-year-old said.

"And when I get to that, I will win. This didn't happen, that's why I was upset."

I also found this tweet funny. In the previous tweet I posted someone noticed that the Chinese called this woman ramen head.

Real sure. I've watched 30 minutes of figure skating the last decade. 10 minutes of Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski talking, in response to the Russian girl not being suspended, about the things they had to go through for drug testing from 13 years old and on. Then the 20 minutes last night. I already knew from notifications that the girl fell, but she took the ice just as I turned the TV on so I wanted to see it. Didn't know about the other crap, NBC got quite lucky to have all that footage and I'm guessing it being tape delayed helped them package it all up like they did.

Also, anyone think it's weird that Eileen Gu chose to represent China?  I get her point of trying to inspire young Chinese athletes, but like picking China over the US is just odd.  I think we gave her more coverage than a lot of our own athletes.

Same. My wife just happened to flip over as the petulant, sore loser (silver medalist) skated. Wife knew about the drama via social media so we watched it unfold. I understand ROC's motivation to allow the doper to skate, but for the life of me I can't understand why the IOC allowed it to proceed. The best possible outcome happened, and it was still a crap show. The alternative was not having a ceremony at all if she medaled. WTaF?

The IOC didn't have a choice, they're the ones who wanted to suspend her but the Russians appealed to the court of arbitration of sport and they said because she's 15 and the Russians delayed the results she had to compete. So to recap, the Russians forced this 15 year old to dope, then when she tested positive they tried to hide the results. The CAS rewarded them for this behavior.

It's up there, no fans definitely sucks, but I think a giant reason why is the last 3 being in South Korea then Japan and then China paired with increased technology making it easy to see who did what before you got to see it I think is the main reason. I think it's fatigue of having such a huge time zone difference.

Like I remember Sydney 2000 and that was exciting cause there was no really way to actually know who did what, now it doesn't matter. I think the next two summer being in Paris and LA, and the winter one in Italy in 2026 will change that back to better. You'll have more chances to either watch crap in real time or have less of a delay for it to make it better. The last good weird time zone Olympics was 2008 and smart phones were barely a thing so it didn't matter then either.

Yes, I miss the days of not GAF about Olympic events being tape-delayed, because it was all "new to me" anyway. Not having as many alternative sports/entertainment options also made what truly the biggest of all sporting events seem so much bigger. Even better when the games are in our own or an adjacent time zone. Would I trade it all back for that hype, suspense and nostalgia? Prob not.

It might just be age, but it sure felt like the lack of alternatives made all sorts of things seem larger than life. This really changed when smartphones got so powerful, social media, etc. I'm rambling like a neo-luddite.

No fans is terrible of course.

I didn't know there was a CAS, and didn't bother to research the issue. I just thought it was ROC bribing and/or bullying IOC. Didn't realize IOC had a superior. Thanks for the info!
