Maybe I'm missing something but what does Minneapolis have that would cause their residents to be snobby?  I've been to the Mall of America, it's not all that.

Need a separate list of cities that really are snobby but have zero rough ridin' justification.

I nominate St. Louis for that honor.  A rough ridin' joke of town inhabited by people who jerk each other off to "which high school did you go to" crap.

Congrats on your breaded ravioli, now GTFOOMF.

That's a good one. The entire Western Michigan region has a great deal of misplaced snobbery, as well. Like, most people who lived there had NO IDEA why anyone would live anywhere else. And my wife got the high school question, as well.

Santa Fe has always been the small city/big town with large art presence.  It is considered to have the largest art collection behind New York City in the U.S.  Plenty of movie stars buy 2nd homes in Santa Fe.  Arnold used to have a home out there.  I was there four years ago and walked past Spike Lee and his family downtown.  I also met quite a few artists who hoped to "make it big" in the art scene but were temporarily bar tenders at the local pubs.

"Travel and Leisure" recently assessed America's snobbiest cities, using a variety of factors, such as "reputation for aloof and smarty-pants residents, along with high-end shopping and highbrow cultural offerings like classical music and theater." Also, "tech-savviness, artisanal coffeehouses, and a conspicuous eco-consciousness,"

Good grief, people. It's nothing to do with pretentious residents. It's everything to do with Kansas City being on the list of most educated and cultured places in the entire universe.

KC people are oddly snobby.

I mean... it's KC.
:shakesfist: Best thing in a 8 state territory.

Point proven.

Well, respond to his question then.

8 States is probably high, but I'd live in KC before most cities.  Denver is cost prohibitive to get out of the smog (would kill a drifter to have enough cash to buy a NICE place in Boulder or Golden).

As a professional, I require two things:  1.  Near a high traffic airport (KCI barely meets this, any smaller and it would not).  2.  Housing costs that are reasonable to allow for ownership of a single family dwelling of over 2500 square feet (e.g. SF does not fit this criteria for me).

This isn't about the quality of the city (KC is not a great city), it's about the snobby level. Which is off the charts.

2500 square feet seems excessive. I mean, I'm not saying move to SF, I'm saying live somewhere smaller and spend the savings on vacations or something.

I would never live in any of those cities. But we are discussing the snobbiness of the cities. And you are proving over and over how highly KC residents think of KC, even though the rest of the US doesn't give 2 shits about KC.

Don't you see how you are reinforcing the "snobby KC resident" thing?

I bet if we ever saw each other in Chicago we would forget this goEMAW nonsense and be bros   :D
I don't know.  You might spot my "I LIKE LENEXA" bumper sticker on my car and tell me how Lenexa's actually a loser KC suburb and how I should have lived in Westport or something.

I would definitely comment on the uniqueness of an "I LIKE LENEXA" bumper sticker, that's for sure. But I would try to do it in a friendly way!

Try leaving your Kansas bubble for a while so you can look back at this and laugh at your dumb opinions.

There is no "in" Lakeshore because it's not a neighborhood, silly!

You have to add the "east" to the end of it? :dunno:  http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/April-2010/Lakeshore-East-20-Best-Towns-and-Neighborhoods-in-Chicago-and-the-Suburbs/

Texas is easily the snobbiest state, right?  Definitely the most state pride. The Texas state flag is on everything down here. Have you ever seen someone flying the ol' "Ad astra per aspera" at their home? Or a Kansas state flag sticker on their car? I can't think of any time.

I've found the most snobby people in Dallas are transplants. But the city has a large number of transplants so I can see where people think it's snobby.

I don't get the Austin hate. The most friendly big city I've ever been to.

2500 square feet seems excessive. I mean, I'm not saying move to SF, I'm saying live somewhere smaller and spend the savings on vacations or something.

If you have a couple kids 2500 square feet becomes pretty small.  We ended up moving to a bigger house because we felt we are on top of each other.

Being the best of the worst isn't exactly something to hang your hat on.

So, your position is that being the best place to live in a 500 square mile area is a bad thing?

22.4 miles by 22.4 miles makes an area that is larger than 500 square miles, fwiw.

Chicago also has gorgeous architecture, a fascinating history, and for the most part very nice people. People in Chicago seem very comfortable with who they are and less likely to try to fit into a "scene" than most cities. It's also much cheaper than SF or Boston or NYC.

yeah. there was a weekend a few months ago where i seriously considered flying by myself from mhk to ord and hanging out at ord for six hours and then flying back to mhk. fanning does fly southwest a lot though so maybe midway left a bad taste. makes sense.

I will admit to liking MDW airport better than ORD. What a pain in the ass that place is!

And yes, I've left the airport. Did you see the part where I said I lived there for awhile? I lived in Shaumburg, northern suburb of Chicago.

Chicago is not awesome. It's just fine or OK. Also, still not Fanning.

oh man schaumburg. i spent a month there one week the summer before college. we stayed at uncle ray and aunt judy's and walked to the white hen pantry to get eggs and bacon every morning. t's and p's. sounds like your beef is w/ schaumburg though and you should probably leave chicago out of it.

that's crazy.  chicago is a generic megacity with horrible weather.  sf and boston are among the handful of america's most beautiful cities and san diego has a unique physical location, good weather and decent history.

Boston would be pretty exhausting there is a snobbish city. Midwesterners like Chicago because everyone in Chicago gives zero fucks about you being a Midwestern slob because that is who they are.  It is comforting to our small timey egos.

Boston has equally horrible weather, and IMO is not more beautiful than Chicago.

So many SF people are pretty annoying, and it costs absurd amounts of money to live in absolute shitboxes.

SD obviously has the incredible location, but it isn't nearly the cultural center* that Chicago is. (*This matters more to me than weather or "beauty").

Chicago is every bit the cultural center SF and Boston are, but with lower prices and nice midwesterners that KK alluded to. And Chicago is a "generic megacity"? What other cities would fall under this label?

what the people are like isn't a consideration for me.  you can't include cost of living.  almost by definition (probably only excepting cities in third world countries for first world buyers), great cities are going to be really expensive because more people want to live there than exists space for people to live.

chicago is a nice city, and i agree with you that it has some beautiful architecture.  by generic megacity, i mean it's about the same in terms of cultural offerings, urban living options, etc. as most other cities of a similar size.  i mean it's nicer than phoenix or houston or whatever, but it doesn't compare favorably to the more historic cities on the coasts or in other countries.  and the weather really does suck.

i do love the easy & cheap public transport from ord to the city center.  that's something every city should have, and an amazing number do not.

see I interact with people me than I interact with hills and 50 degree saltwater, so I place higher value on personal interaction. obviously you are different. Neither of us is ridiculous or wrong.

and of course you can compare cost of living.

oh, I thought you acknowledged Phoenix and Houston weren't in the ballpark of Chicago culturally. It's hilarious you would compare then to Chicago. I mean I might as well be having this discussion with Kim Carnes.

History/age can influence a city's architecture, layout, and infrastructure. Historical events can have an impact on how the people behave. It can also do neither.
