Maybe I'm missing something but what does Minneapolis have that would cause their residents to be snobby? I've been to the Mall of America, it's not all that.

Being surrounded by Iowans/North Dakotan's/Canadians leads to an inflated ego
-
minnesota is elite. being filled with rich, beautiful Scandinavian women with large breasts gives them reason to be proud up there.
-
Chicago and Minneapolis are, like, the least snobby places on the planet. NYC deserves to be snobby.
-
Minneapolis has a few suburbs *cough Edina* that would skyrocket their ego.
The city itself is great...but yea, them yuppie ass suburbs getcha.
-
No Austin, TX means list is erroneous.
-
What about KC at #14? JOCO? They blamed it on our rich art scenery here. :jerk:

No Orlando? http://news.softpedia.com/news/Driver-Shot-in-Orlando-Was-Mistaken-for-Someone-else-After-Leaving-Adult-Movie-Theater-364980.shtml

Also Portland. Lived in MPLS. LOL @ that being on the list.

Need a separate list of cities that really are snobby but have zero rough ridin' justification.
I nominate St. Louis for that honor. A rough ridin' joke of town inhabited by people who jerk each other off to "which high school did you go to" crap.
Congrats on your breaded ravioli, now GTFOOMF.

That's a good one. The entire Western Michigan region has a great deal of misplaced snobbery, as well. Like, most people who lived there had NO IDEA why anyone would live anywhere else. And my wife got the high school question, as well.

You haven't talked to BigDCat about BigD, then. But he sells the "there's a reason" for the snobbiness very well. So much so that I almost moved there last year!

Dallas and Los Angeles are equally snobby.
-
Dallas is just full of shiny shirts, and 35killionaires that it makes them snobby. Or at least thats the perception i see from TV..
What the hell is snobby about Sante Fe? Youre that lucky to be that close to Mexico or something?
-
No Austin, TX means list is erroneous.

I wouldn't really consider Portland or Austin "snobby." Liberal, maybe, but not snobby.

Santa Fe has always been the small city/big town with large art presence. It is considered to have the largest art collection behind New York City in the U.S. Plenty of movie stars buy 2nd homes in Santa Fe. Arnold used to have a home out there. I was there four years ago and walked past Spike Lee and his family downtown. I also met quite a few artists who hoped to "make it big" in the art scene but were temporarily bar tenders at the local pubs.

Austin backs up their snobbiness. They have every right to say their city kicks ass......because it does. And it doesn't cost 600K+ to afford a house there either like SF or NY.
I love that city.
Didn't know Sante Fe was full of hollywooders

when I was in KC about 5 or 6 years ago, people that lived there generally seemed to dislike it. I'm considering this to be progress.

Sounds like something a snob would say.
-
The women in Austin outnumber the men, and most of them are DTF. Just take my word for it, wacks.
-
"Travel and Leisure" recently assessed America's snobbiest cities, using a variety of factors, such as "reputation for aloof and smarty-pants residents, along with high-end shopping and highbrow cultural offerings like classical music and theater." Also, "tech-savviness, artisanal coffeehouses, and a conspicuous eco-consciousness,"
Good grief, people. It's nothing to do with pretentious residents. It's everything to do with Kansas City being on the list of most educated and cultured places in the entire universe.

Oh, I've been there and have dated a few from that area. I totally agree, but they do love their city, which they should.

Obviously people in KC look down on the smaller cities in the midwest but BBQ is about the only thing Kansas Citians will get uppity about. They will get defensive and try to bring the good parts of living there - low cost of living! All 4 seasons! 2 Major League sports!

Well, respond to his question then.
8 States is probably high, but I'd live in KC before most cities. Denver is cost prohibitive to get out of the smog (would kill a drifter to have enough cash to buy a NICE place in Boulder or Golden).
As a professional, I require two things: 1. Near a high traffic airport (KCI barely meets this, any smaller and it would not). 2. Housing costs that are reasonable to allow for ownership of a single family dwelling of over 2500 square feet (e.g. SF does not fit this criteria for me).

This isn't about the quality of the city (KC is not a great city), it's about the snobby level. Which is off the charts.

2500 square feet seems excessive. I mean, I'm not saying move to SF, I'm saying live somewhere smaller and spend the savings on vacations or something.

It's relative, though. What are you deciding between? That's the key. Chicago? Chicago pins KC to the mat in like 10 seconds. OKC? GMAFB. See?

I would never live in any of those cities. But we are discussing the snobbiness of the cities. And you are proving over and over how highly KC residents think of KC, even though the rest of the US doesn't give 2 shits about KC.

As a professional, I require two things: 1. Near a high traffic airport (KCI barely meets this, any smaller and it would not). 2. Housing costs that are reasonable to allow for ownership of a single family dwelling of over 2500 square feet (e.g. SF does not fit this criteria for me).
Thanks for further proving my point.
This isn't about the quality of the city (KC is not a great city), it's about the snobby level. Which is off the charts.
KC needs more confidence (aka dick flopping) like this. It's no world city but I'd take it over it's peers.
What's KC got to dick flop about? It's tiny airport? It's small downtown? It's irrelevant (minus soccer) sports teams?
Don't go all Ben on us...it's okay. Your city is cool too.
All you did was dodge the question.
KC is a fine place. Kind of quaint but whatever. I just don't understand people who act like it's some kind of huge important city.
-
If I could go live anywhere in the Central time zone, I think I'd take Milwaukee. I rough ridin' love it.
i bet you could get a huge house in St Joe and be closer to the airport than you are now. yup, nailed it. need a seller's agent? i know people.
-
Why would I "have to live within 500 miles of KC"? Do I have some kind of medical condition that insists I be around hayseeds? I don't understand.
Maybe you could stop being a rough ridin' $!#* and answer the question? Would that kill you?
Manhattan, KS. :)

Who said kc was huge and important? It's the best place in the area.

KC is a pretty nice place to live, IF YOU LIKE LIVING IN THE BEST OF THE WORST, THAT IS.

They are all pretty much the same.
KC, Des Moines, OKC, Omaha, Little Rock, St. Louis etc are all pretty rough ridin' similar.

Tons of KC people hate it though. Could be baseball related? IDK.

Only once, and Nashville would be my #2. From what I've seen, Austin seems a little more diverse/eclectic.

Austin probably has the best music scene relative to size of metro. But Asheville, NC would be close. And so would Nashville, I guess.

Texas is easily the snobbiest state, right? Definitely the most state pride. The Texas state flag is on everything down here. Have you ever seen someone flying the ol' "Ad astra per aspera" at their home? Or a Kansas state flag sticker on their car? I can't think of any time.
I've found the most snobby people in Dallas are transplants. But the city has a large number of transplants so I can see where people think it's snobby.
I don't get the Austin hate. The most friendly big city I've ever been to.
-
Kansas just doesn't have a very cool flag. They could get a new one at my constitutional convention. Of course, we'll be redrawing state lines, too, so let me get back to you on that.

2500 square feet seems excessive. I mean, I'm not saying move to SF, I'm saying live somewhere smaller and spend the savings on vacations or something.
If you have a couple kids 2500 square feet becomes pretty small. We ended up moving to a bigger house because we felt we are on top of each other.

Chicago is a horrible place. I really, really want to like it every time I go there, but it sucks each and every time. It has all the bad big city stuff -- awful traffic, crime, etc. -- and zero of the unique charm of other big cities like NYC, BOS, or SFO.
It's garbage.

I guess YMMV. My entire family is from California and they aren't very proud of it at all.

Chicago also has gorgeous architecture, a fascinating history, and for the most part very nice people. People in Chicago seem very comfortable with who they are and less likely to try to fit into a "scene" than most cities. It's also much cheaper than SF or Boston or NYC.
I read the book about Chicago housing and it kind of pissed me off, though.

Love, love, love the people in NYC and Boston. Typically very straightforward and direct, but friendly. When I worked in Chicago --well, I have some bad stories about the people who call Chicago home. Highly unpleasant. (Some were OK. None were great. And one still sends me email forwards constantly. It's all stuff I saw two weeks ago on Facebook, but she doesn't Facebook! :chainsaw: )

And yes, I've left the airport. Did you see the part where I said I lived there for awhile? I lived in Shaumburg, northern suburb of Chicago.
Chicago is not awesome. It's just fine or OK. Also, still not Fanning.
your spelling of schaumburg kind of outs you btw
-
Oh crap. I did spell it wrong. Fine. You got me. I'm Fanning. I did not intern anywhere near Chicago.
-
:D
-
-
Chicago is pretty cool.
-
What a rough ridin' idiot.

What a rough ridin' idiot.
Waited all day with baited breath for Bread to chime in. It was kind of a let down.

Those were the only words that came to mind. I stand by them.
-
Pffffft. You're losing your touch, Bread. Very disappointing. :frown:
-
Do better and you'll get better. It's all you deserve at this point.

I would prefer Chicago over SF, Boston, and San Diego.
that's crazy. chicago is a generic megacity with horrible weather. sf and boston are among the handful of america's most beautiful cities and san diego has a unique physical location, good weather and decent history.
-
Boston would be pretty exhausting there is a snobbish city. Midwesterners like Chicago because everyone in Chicago gives zero fucks about you being a Midwestern slob because that is who they are. It is comforting to our small timey egos.
-
Agree on San Diego though.

Boston has equally horrible weather, and IMO is not more beautiful than Chicago.
So many SF people are pretty annoying, and it costs absurd amounts of money to live in absolute shitboxes.
SD obviously has the incredible location, but it isn't nearly the cultural center* that Chicago is. (*This matters more to me than weather or "beauty").
Chicago is every bit the cultural center SF and Boston are, but with lower prices and nice midwesterners that KK alluded to. And Chicago is a "generic megacity"? What other cities would fall under this label?

what the people are like isn't a consideration for me. you can't include cost of living. almost by definition (probably only excepting cities in third world countries for first world buyers), great cities are going to be really expensive because more people want to live there than exists space for people to live.
chicago is a nice city, and i agree with you that it has some beautiful architecture. by generic megacity, i mean it's about the same in terms of cultural offerings, urban living options, etc. as most other cities of a similar size. i mean it's nicer than phoenix or houston or whatever, but it doesn't compare favorably to the more historic cities on the coasts or in other countries. and the weather really does suck.
i do love the easy & cheap public transport from ord to the city center. that's something every city should have, and an amazing number do not.

see I interact with people me than I interact with hills and 50 degree saltwater, so I place higher value on personal interaction. obviously you are different. Neither of us is ridiculous or wrong.
and of course you can compare cost of living.

I noticed you didn't name any other "generic megacities". That's fine.
What do you mean by "more historic"?
-
Chicago is mass Generica.
-
San Diego is horrible guys. Come visit, but don't move here.
-

What do you mean by "more historic"?
i named two. by more historic, i mostly mean the quality of possessing more history, but you could also include better history.
-
was Dallas considered when you said Houston?

oh, I thought you acknowledged Phoenix and Houston weren't in the ballpark of Chicago culturally. It's hilarious you would compare then to Chicago. I mean I might as well be having this discussion with Kim Carnes.
Chicago has a deep, fascinating and important history, good grief.

i was doing both. it's like the kc 500 mile radius thing. a good peer for chicago in terms of size and culture is la. i wouldn't want to live in either.
tell me more about 19th century commodities and railroad, i can't get enough.
-
I would prefer LA to Chicago. When you're tired of lessons about rivers and canals, I'll tell you the fascinating story of that earthquake. And if you still have time, I'll tell you about another one!

The history angle is mostly bullshit. There's not much to it.
-
I just want to live some place where I can surf in the morning and then ski in the afternoon. Too bad no such place exists.
-
Here we go, folks. michcat, chum1, and sys all having an internet convo.

The history angle is mostly bullshit. There's not much to it.
it's largely irrelevant. Oh cool, Paul Revere was here. I'm so glad I live here.

I read this book, very good and I typically hate this sort of thing. It's more than just "mafia." An amazing collection of characters built KC. Crazy stuff.

No, it's aesthetics. That's what you perceive.

i don't think it is.

History/age can influence a city's architecture, layout, and infrastructure. Historical events can have an impact on how the people behave. It can also do neither.

I want to know that what I'm looking at is authentic and not Epcot Center. Beyond that, I can't comprehend how you experience history. This leads me to believe that aesthtics are way more important.
-
Upon further reflection, I guess I can see some value in know the history of something beyond verifying authenticity. Take the watch from Pulp Fiction. Even if it wasn't your family heirloom, that's one hell of a history.

Weather is #1, and why the west coast is the best coast.

Yeah, the climate and native vegetation are most important in my book.
