I'm even more excited about this addition the day after.

Combine the fact that we went to a state where we don't normally pull talent and the player was pulled by a new assistant coach, well, that's just reason for good cheer.

why on earth would you want to do that?  he's as big as a house, he's a mokan, and he's lithuanian.  jfc.

Upshaw's former HS coach and mentor played ball at Cowley CC about 20 yrs ago. Can't really say that was a decisive factor for us but it probably didn't hurt:

"As a player at Cowley County (Arkansas City, Kan.) Community College, Ormond was the starting point guard and led his team to a 21-9 record. He was named the school's Student-Athlete of the Year."

Don't know if this site had been linked yet:

http://247sports.com/Player/Robert-Upshaw-12138

Massive big man with soft hands who has streamlined his body, shedding significant weight from his freshman to junior years. A sure high-major prospect who is one of the top centers on the West Coast in 2012.

June 2011: Upshaw held his own at the Pangos All-American Camp against 247 Sports' top two big men in the 2012 Class, Andre Drummond and Isaiah Austin. Upshaw looks the part of a college center and the hard work he's put into his body to shed weight while adding muscle has paid off. Upshaw runs the floor well and shows good court awareness by consistently beating his man to the right post position. A concern is Upshaw is more polished as a scorer rather than an elite defender and must get tougher in the post to truly challenge opponents at the rim and compete for rebounds.

August 2011: Upshaw closed out a successful spring and summer with a strong showing in Las Vegas at the Adidas Super 64 (late July) and an equally impressive performance at the Adidas Nations in Los Angeles earlier this month. Upshaw battled against all the top bigs in the 2012 class and not only held his own but outclassed his opponents on multiple occasions.

Of all the 2012 bigs, Upshaw is likely the most polished on the offensive end with a mid-range face up game to match his back-to-the basket play where he can score over either shoulder. As Upshaw's conditioning continues to improve (he's already in solid shape) his proverbial "ceiling" will only get higher.

You have to scroll down about 10 pages to get to the overall stats for USA 2012 Red featuring Upshaw, but you can get there, would have pasted that alone but my tech skills are sorely lacking.

It is what it is, he didn't appear to dominate there but his stats are comparable to other similarly ranked players in that tournament.

And, of course, stats don't always tell the whole story. Kyle Anderson's #'s look very pedestrian there but he looked like the best player on the floor during the 3rd place game that I was able to watch a little over 3 months ago. Yes, Upshaw did play in that game, but that was before I'd realized we were even recruiting him. I just remember he was real big, finished strong when he had an open lane to the rim, and was a pretty decent passer out of the high post.

Hate to go back to an old topic, but I think it speaks volumes that KU is in such desperate need of bigs that they take some scrub from Texas (144th ranked) and an unranked kid from Oregon and don't even pursue Cauley.  I know this will sound like sour grapes, but I'm glad we got Upshaw if he and Cauley were an either or.

The fact that our combos still have no understanding of the kc aau dynamic speaks volumes.
