Kentucky's newest commit, Willie Cauley, may take some time to make a big impact at the college level.

Even though the 6-foot-11, 210-pound center is ranked ESPN's No. 32 recruit in 2012, it is based largely on the Cauley's potential. He still needs to add weight and strength to his slim frame, and that could take some time. He also must improve his offensive skills and develop some moves in the post to fully live up to his potential.

When Cauley takes the floor at UK, expect his greatest skill to initially be blocking shots. He has that long, lean Jelani McCoy type of frame that will make him an immediate defensive force. But to become a factor on offense and to improve as a rebounder in the rugged SEC, Cauley will first have to put in some work in the weight room and on the practice floor.

John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats love to recruit against Kansas. Willie Cauley (Spearville, Kan./Olathe NW) is the top talent in Kansas this year and his commitment would typically be a big feather in Calipari's cap except for one small detail: Kansas wasn’t a player for Cauley. Instead of besting recruiting rival Bill Self, Calipari snuck one by Frank Martin and the Kansas State Wildcats. Cauley was KSU’s top target.

Alabama, which also has a Top 50 player from Kansas on its roster, was heavily involved and Florida received a visit as well. However, the Mokan Elite standout, ranked No. 32 in the ESPNU 100, went with Kentucky. No, he’s not going to play football either, though UK could use him. Cauley, who lives with former NFL great Will Shields, played football for the first time this year.

Cauley is long, can run and is poised to be a defensive impact player. Offensively, Cauley has to find a scoring move and a comfort zone. If he can close his senior year in a role as dominant player and a big producer, he’ll be that much closer to reaching his potential. The kid has an NBA body.

Cauley told a number of coaches that were recruiting him that he wanted to be one and done. I get that, who doesn’t? The reality is while Cauley is a major talent; he’s going to need time to develop. You always hope that kids realize this when they make decisions.

I'm hoping that I can now continue to point out Cauley's flaws without getting jumped by the "stars mean everything" guys on this board.  A good friend (who also was an assistant D1 bball coach) went to watch Cauley play football the other night.  His text to me reiterated what I had seen with my own eyes....he's soft as a marshmallow.  Maybe he's just a dominant, tenacious ass kicker on the bball court, but i doubt it. I wish we would have landed him because what he needs is Frank screaming at him.  He's got no chance with Cal.  I'd be shocked if he was ever a major contributor at UK.

They allegedly had an offer for Upshaw.  iirc they weren't on his list of finalists though.

Yeah, AZ was thought to be Upshaw's leader until he cut his list to 4 last month and AZ mysteriously didn't make it.

His final 4 are L'vile, Fresno, G'town, and KSU Cats. He's already visited the first 3 listed and we'll get the last visit*. Having the last visit(2 actually) with Cauley didn't really help us. Just hope the visit goes well and we have a legit shot.

*Could still take 1 more(allowed 5 officials by NCAA) but haven't heard about him considering any others.

A couple months ago, he was saying that he was definitely going to decide late, but recently he has been saying that he is strongly considering signing early.

To best of my knowledge, no definite statement saying that he will sign early though.

He moved from Spearville to Olathe by his AAU team (which is closely tied to KSU) after Brad Underwood (KSU assistant) convinced him to do so.  He was living with his poor grandparents - and now he's living with Will Shields (who is also a good guy).  His AAU team was parading him all around the country telling him he had offers that he didn't have - and using the kid to open up doors to their AAU program.

Well now - KSU is basically threatening the AAU team if the kid doesn't end up with them.  The guy who runs the AAU team is controlling anything to do with his recruiting - because he knows KSU will quit placing foreigners with them - or help them get local kids that they have ties with.

Note - this is the same AAU team who's 17u assistant coach was just arrested for having sex with one of his High School students in the parking lot of Park Hill South High School.

Given the level of involvement by KSU with his AAU program, I'm really surprised that he ended up anywhere but KSU.

I think it's pretty fantastic that K-State got a former Chief and a Nebraska Alum to carry water for the basketball program.

That's damn impressive.

I wasn't really impressed by his videos either.  Slow and soft.  I didn't see the athleticism that others saw.  All the same I wanted him bad.  He's about as good as we can hope to get nowadays.  I'd really like to keep the best in-state kids local.  Ahhh, the eventual kick in the nuts.

i'd blame this loss on Old Ballz and his epic fail in the 3rd quarter on Saturday.

i've warned you people about snyder before.

i agree and would love to keep the best talent in state.  I think Frank could have made him a player.   i was hopeful we could land Ellis...I think he'll end up being a much bigger contributor than Cauley.
