here's a fun game we can play: go back through this entire season and post your favorite gems from this thread.

Talking contracts and potential moves is awesome. We're all still enjoying the moment, but thinking about next year is fun too.

if we don't re-sign him, Gordo is probably going to Boston if i had to guess. he fits in there, with his pine tar-y helmet and his beard and whatnot. i'm not sure they're ready for dat ass tho

Yes, I'm having a blast thinking about potential moves DM will make. What washed up pitcher will we sign and turn into a major stud?  Which former hitter with a broken leg will lead the roys in RBI next year? So exciting!!!

Gif or pic or link to glowing royals article before you try and "break down" any more contracts.

I would miss Gordon for sentimental reasons, but I certainly wouldn't pay what he's going to get on the open market. Gordon was out a significant portion of this season and we did fine without him. I think Dayton is capable of finding a cheaper replacement that is approximately as productive as Gordo. Small market teams really can't let feelings get involved with contracts like this, because we can't afford to be a nursing home like the Yankees. If a player sucks but he's getting big money, the dude is still gonna play. Watch Omar Infante play like 140 games next year. If I thought Gordon was going to be productive for another five years it'd be different. Maybe the front office thinks he will though, I'm sure we'll find out soon.

OK, let's stop posting about superficial things like how hot the players are and get back to talking about how many millions of dollars they are going to make next year.

It's really about being productive for two... 2018-19 we aren't going to compete regardless

Okay, so I don't think that it's a given that we won't be in a position to win in 2018-19, that's a long way away. Let's say that's true though, I don't think he's going to provide production commensurate with his salary going forward for ANY years. I think he'd still be a good player, but he won't be worth his contract no matter where he goes, that dude is going to get way overpaid.

The real question is whether you think the Royals are returning enough to compete for another World Series next year. If so, you want the best starting players your budget can afford, even if they are overpaid. If the Royals have some other cheaper or more sensible option who provides as much production as Gordon, that is great. Otherwise, they had probably better try to get him back.

Good small market GMs most often will find cheaper more sensible options on a pretty regular basis instead of resigning top level free agents. Dayton was 3-3 on that front last year, he should do that again (I consider Rios a success because of his playoff contributions, earned his salary and then some).

One of my favorite gE related moments during the 2015 Royals season was on opening day when Stevesie explained to a vodka rep girl at Maes what a Moose dong was and why it required a round of shots.

The only top level free agent Dayton didn't resign last year was Shields, and Volquez was just as good if not better. I agree that if Dayton can find a left fielder better than Gordon for less money, then he should do that.
