It seemed like he actually started taking some pitches, then the hitting came around, but you never can be sure with a guy like him.

question for people that have actually played real baseball.

the stuff announcers talk about recognizing pitches is complete bullshit, correct? i mean you don't see the spin of the ball and then consciously swing 6 inches under where you think the pitch will be, right? it's all just instinctively calculated somewhere in your brain that's in charge of calculating data gathered by the eye and translating those data into instructions for your muscles. like everything else in sports. amirite? i'm pretty sure imrite.

Pitch recognition is a thing, players learn techniques for adjusting their swing/swinging to get hits based on pitch locations, players have different approaches for different counts/pitchers/situations, but the swing itself is mostly instinctive.

what I guess I'm saying is an elite MLB hitter will recognize a curve ball (sometimes even before it has left the pitcher's hand) and will then swing appropriately.

@sys: I think good hitters can anticipate by arm angle and release how a ball will move after that much experience. That's why pitchers work hard to make their change up look the same as a fastball etc. I don't think they're seeing the laces.
