Guys, let's make a list of aging, yet still productive, bats on crappy teams. .800 OPS types are the minimum.

I'll start with a couple: slash stats are for the first half of this season.

Mike Napoli (1B) Boston - .266/ .389/ .461, .820 OPS - Napoli is 32, his contract runs through next season. Scheduled to make $16 mill next season. He's been pretty consistent along those slash lines and has given teams around 25 HR a year for the last few. Doesn't help the OF situation, but a good bat and avail for 1B and DH.

Adam Dunn (1B) Chi Sox - .224/ .361/ .437 - Dunn is 34, and in the final year of his contract. He's Making $15 million this season. As we all know Dunn is the anti-Royal. He walks a ton, hits the ball hard (14 HR this season), and strikes out a lot. He's also better at 1B than people give him credit for. This would be a true rental, but there may be a chance to retain depending on his price tag and the Royals chances for future success. The White Sox aren't that bad, but Dunn really wouldn't be in a long-term option.

Justin Morneau (1B) Rockies - .214/ .345/ .512 - Morneau is 33 and is having a resurgent year, though he's risky as a lot of it prob has to do with being in Colorado. He's also signed through 2016, but with a cheaper price tag of $6.75 million (2015), $9 million (2016, mutual option) Morneau has 13 HR at the break, and has always been able to walk a decent amount. It's hard for me to believe though, that he could translate his Coors Field success to the K.

Obviously there are others, and a guy who could play OF might be a better option.

What is the OF situation?  I mean cain, gordon, dyson seem like a good set up, then we have a few serviceable bench guys.  A decent backup at 1st seems like it would make sense.

Plan that world series parade if true....

the cf3's of your kc royals

WTF dude? Cain, Dyson, Gordon have a combined .298 ave and a .724 OPS
League leading Detroit starting OF has a combined .274 ave and a .823 OPS

I don't think KC's problem is in the OF.  They are not getting production from the DH and position players. Trading Billy and getting some infield depth that has a bat, makes the most sense.  The back up OF for the Royals generally hit above .250 (Akoi) and maybe Ibanez will work it out...and I think they could probably call up an OF from Omaha, maybe Orlando (.314 ave .800 OPS)

But yeah, it was super dumb of me to suggest that they'd add a bullpen arm a few weeks back.

FWIW, I never said it was or wasn't the "right move."  You asked what moves the Royals would make and I said they'd probably add a corner outfielder and a reliever.

I think my train of thought was that a guy who can provide pop from a corner-OF position and fill in at DH/ 1B gives flexibility. You also don't know what you'd have to give up to get a guy and dudes like Nori, Butler, Dyson are all possible pieces.

Morneau would be good, but I've been thinking about Adam Dunn in a Royals uniform for years.

An interesting thought. We shall see. If we don't make a move for an "established bat", I'll be surprised. The Royals have made some recent player moves for cash considerations only, which suggests they're thinking about a move invovling a player(s) and cash that could make a real impact. We should know soon.

That's kind of what I was thinking after they announced the trade to Boston yesterday.

So much in this article about how good Alex is, and how shitty the organization can be.

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/mlb/kansas-city-royals/article754018.html

Quote
He downed his last cup of ice cream in the Safeco Field clubhouse in 2012, but only because “I felt like I was going to faint, and I needed some sugar,” he said.

Amazing.

Quote
At his lowest moments before 2011, Gordon felt he moped to the plate without a plan. His approach became too simplistic. By picking Seitzer’s brain, he explained, he developed a method for success beyond “see the ball, hit the ball.”

Gordon admitted he missed Seitzer, who was fired after 2012, and the team’s continual midseason reshuffling of hitting coaches has hampered him. But if Gordon has proved anything in his eight seasons as a Royal, he can adapt. “He’s one of the most special players I’ve ever been around,” general manager Dayton Moore said.

this infuriates me. so effing much. the biggest success story this team has had is Alex. What more reason do you need to keep seitzer? We kept Ned and fired Seitzer. eff Ned.

Quote
Moore regards Gordon as an organizational exemplar. When younger players Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas falter, Moore references Gordon’s resurrection.

They don't see that Gordon succeeded in spite of the organizations bull crap. Alex did this. Not the Royals. Alex. They bury their head in the sand and hope that Moose and Eric become what Alex is. Alex got here with hard work not wishes upon a star. Eric might get there on talent, Moose would need to work as hard as Alex does.

Quote
The players hosted their fathers on a road trip last month. Each night, as his teammates clinked bottles of Bud Light and Tecate with their elders, Gordon downed his customary plates of grilled chicken and steamed vegetables while sipping bottled water.

I wish the other players would look at Alex and see that he's an above average athlete, with a crazy work ethic. Wake up dumbasses.

Thank you Alex for proving 2010 CF3 wrong and being great.

compared to most here, i'm pretty much an apologist for yost and even moore. but getting rid of seitzer was infuriating.  i'd be fine with firing everyone in the organization today as long as it was made clear that they were all being fired for seitzer.

Guys did you read that? Those stories come from long, sit down, one on one interviews with the beat writer. He mentioned one person he gives credit for that worked for the Royals. One. Seitzer. The best player we've had post-Beltran, and one of the best LFs in the game gives no credit to ANYONE who works for the Royals.

Greinke called out management during his last season. Alex, in his own subtle way, looks like he's doing the same (albeit it won't be his last season here). Alex is correct in what he says directly and what he implies. Greinke was also spot on at the time.

yeah. people hate on zack for forcing their hand, but i didn't blame him one bit. as a competitor, you play to compete and win. the royals didn't look as if they cared about winning for a long damn time. they've been better the past few years, and zack's trade actually had a lot to do with it. alcides and lorenzo are, along with alex and salvy, our best position players.
