Pts allowed by Chiefs this season: 20, 20, 20, 10, 40, 17, 16, 9, 31, 31, 24, 16, 27, 29, 14, and 38. Playoffs: 17, 24, 31
This is the stat that I care about. I don't give a crap if the Chiefs get 0 sacks in a season as long as they keep the opponent from putting up points. The numbers above aren't great, but also not awful (22.8 pts per game). In comparison, Chiefs averaged 28.5 pts per game.
I don't see our defense improving this number. This is why I think it is important you surround Mahomes with talent (WR) and protection (OL) so the PPG can creep up closer to 30 like in 2019/2018.
2020 Summary
PPG Allowed: 22.pts
PPG Scored: 28.5pts
**5.7pt delta
*** 1 game of KC scoring 40+
Last year (2019) for comparison (again including playoffs):
PPG Allowed: 20.2
PPG Scored: 29.9
**9pt delta
***3 games of KC scoring 40+
2018 for comparison:
PPG Allowed: 26.2
PPG Scored: 34.8
**8.6pt delta
***5 games of KC scoring 40+
Many think Chiefs played to their competition in 2020...which might be the case. We definitely relied more on the defense to win games than we did outscoring our opponents. I think this year would have been even more lopsided if Mahomes had a healthy OL. I'm shocked we only lost 2 games in the regular season since the delta changed by 4 pts from 2019. Patrick also ran the ball 19 more times in the regular season than he did in 2019 which seems like a large increase but just a couple more than 2018.
