Smith was completing 70% of his passes before he got hurt this season

2010 Matt Cassell

58.2% but close!

Dude had a QB rating of 104.1 last year as well. Of course, he did have 5 pro bowlers on his o-line.

Also, eliminate the one outlier and he is similar to Cassel in rating over his career as well.

One outlier being 2011 and 2012? Cause he was pretty good in both years.

Alex smith's rating over career(highest rating to lowest per NFL.com) 104, 90, 82, 81, 79, 74, 57, 40
Matt Cassel's rating over career (highest rating to lowerst per NFL)   93, 89, 89, 80, 70, 69.9, 66, 32

Saying one is any better than the other, other than the one outlier, is splitting hairs

Alex Smith's career record when the opponent scores at least 24 points: 2-27-1

Anyone wanna play a fun game? Let's go over the last 5 years of playoff teams and divide up those teams that are there with traded for/free agent QB's and those that there with drafted QB's.  :D

Houston and Denver were the only teams in last season's playoffs who did not draft their starting QB.

Let it be known, I was fully on the "trade every single draft pick to get RG3" last year at this time.

RGIII is good for like a few more season. He will get injured up pretty good, which sucks since he's a boss

This move to get Smith is ridiculously stupid. So bad.  If I was a Chiefs fan I would be pissed.  The organization just basically told the public "we want to be pretty good.  We would rather be pretty good than have an opportunity to be great.  We don't want to bear the risk that trying to be great might bring with it."
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

went and actually looked.

Traded qb's and FA qb's to go to playoffs

Eli Manning (Giants 07)**
Matt Hasselbeck (Seahawks 07)*
Todd Collins (Redskins 07)
Jeff Garcia (Eagles 07)
Kerry Collins (Titans 08)
Chad Pennington (Dolphins 08)
Kurt Warner (Cards 08)
Jake Delhomme (Panthers 08) (5 interceptions in first round)
Carson Palmer (Bengals 09)
Michael Vick (Eagles 09)
Kurt Warner (Cards 09)*
Brett Farve (Vikings 09)*
Matt Hasselbeck (Seahawks 10)*
Matt Cassell (Chiefs 10)*
Michael Vick (Eagles 10)
Jay Cutler (Bears 10)*
Matt Schaub (Texans 11) (counted this even though T.J. Yates played in the playoffs)
Eli Manning (Giants 11)**
Matt Schaub (Texans 12)*
Peyton Manning (Broncos 12)

* Indicates 1 or more wins in the playoffs
** Indicates super bowl champs

as i said earlier, Eli doesn't really count. 20 out of 60 Teams that reached the playoffs got there with a traded for or acquired from free agency a QB. 9 of those teams actually won a game or more in the playoffs. and only 2 of those teams won the superbowl, which doesn't count because Eli held out.

think that is right. if someone can think of anyone i missed, please let me know.

I am angry about our bad luck, to have the first pick in a year this down at QB.  However, I am OK with the trade.  They had to do SOMETHING, and this is something.

Now, I say they trade down and still take a QB with their first or a newly acquired second.

That's actually kind of encouraging. What percentage of the league starts a guy they didn't draft? I'd bet it's close to 1/3, so maybe there really isn't as much to this "you need to draft a QB for the future" talk as we all think.

I think they gave a bit too much, but I think giving a 2nd round pick plus that other pick will be less expensive than giving up the #1 pick for some shitty QB in this draft. The value we will get from choosing the best available player with the #1 pick will be greater than the difference between Alex Smith and the 2nd rounder we gave up to get him.

Look at the teams that have turned around quickly in the past few years. ALL OF THEM (sans the Colts maybe) have built good to great defenses first, and then gotten a sparkplug at quarterback when they were ready/available. There is not a quarterback available that would give us that spark. But there very well could be next year. People act as if we are all in on Alex Smith, and I don't think that's the case at all.
