A guy who is mediocre who had his two best yrs under a fantastic coach with fantastic defense.
I hate this talking point. If you think that's how they got to the NFC championship game, then get Alex Smith in here and do it the same way. The Chiefs have a defense that truly is not far away from a very, very good one. Get another impact linebacker, another starting corner and maybe a defensive end in here and let's go (they have the cap room to be able to legitimately do this in free agency, not to mention the draft).
The guy got hurt then healthy and never saw the field again. Is Kapernick(SP) brady, manning, brees, rogers, etc? Nope.
We had the worst qb in the league and you guys are saying we improved so we should be happy. With the money, cap space, and draft picks we had available, I would expect us to do something more splashy than grabbing a guy slightly better than matt cassell. Make someone an offer they can't refuse.
I was referring to 2011 when Smith was healthy and took the Niners to the NFC Champ game.
And I agree that we aren't improved to the point where we should be "happy", but I think that we filled a hole that clearly was the biggest thing that was holding this team back from being competitive last year. Not saying that we solved the problem long term, but for next year and the year after, we improved the QB position significantly. Now we can go use that cap room and those draft picks to fill other significant but far less glaring holes that we had for next year. Then next year after we go 8-8 or whatever, we can draft a more legitimate QB prospect like Aaron Murray or Teddy Bridgewater or AJ McCarron or whoever with the 15th overall pick and he can be our QB of the future.
I don't love the trade, but like emawblast has pointed out, it's not something to melt down about either. Before the free agency period has even started or the draft even ocurred, the 2013-14 Chiefs are already significantly better than the 2012-13 Chiefs ever were.
