"Eat this not that" Topeka Local Dining edition:

Burgers: Annies Place (Gage Center)
Pizza: Giovannis, Glory Days (10th and Quincy/29th and Wanamaker)
Italian: Paisano's (Fleming Place)
Chinese: Hunams (29th and Fairlawn)
Mexican: Tequila's (Brookwood)
Steak: Northstar (HWY 24 and Rochester Rd)
Ice Cream: G's Frozen chicken nuggets
Indian: Globe Indian Cuisine (10th and Quincy)
Thai: Tuptim Thai (South Kansas Ave)

:bait: Chinese Pavilion at 17th and Fairlawn is much, MUCH better.

I watched Saul eat lunch there with his coworkers one day.    :peek:

Saul, thoughts on Bavarian Inn (RIP) or the Shack?

Damn I miss the Bavarian.      Not a fan of Annie's BTW.   Banjos makes a better burger.

Best Burger in town at a sit down restaurant is Annies, as Saul points out.  Best fast food burger is currently the Pad Burger, but used to be the Buddy Burger.

Fact:  The Pad (elite North Topeka fast food burger joint) is owned by the same family that owned Buddy's  (previously located on 10th street across from the hospitals), but after Buddy's was taken over by their son (a would-be heavy weight boxing contender, Dangerous Damon Reed), it folded.

Buddy's served RC Cola!

Now they are a fast food Mexican restaurant named "Andale!" - I haven't tried it yet.

Pad is still around in N. Topeka.  They had a location at 21st and Washburn for awhile but folded.

Andale closed.   Never went, but it was silently owned by the Casa guy, so it was basically Casa without the buffet.

FACT:  Felini's frozen pizza was owned by the same Topeka family that owned Champions BBQ, and who held the patent for the majority of pickled eggs in the Midwest, including Wetta pickled eggs (served in the Aggie Lounge of Aggieville fame).

Who was this?   I knew the former Champions owner (Chris) and never knew any of this.

FACT:  There is a biker bar* in North Topeka that has a motorcycle made of bones & hundereds of bras hanging from the walls.

*Spacing the name, just north of 24, maybe off Kansas?.
The only place in Topeka that I would take someone from out-of-town.

Is the new Seabrook owned by the same people that own Specs?

Even Specs website still links to articles that call it Seabrook.  They were using the names interchangeably throughout the 80's and 90's.
Believe it's like the daughter or something that runs one or the other. Not sure.

Aye.  Daughter owns Speck's.

FACT:  Original Seabrook Tavern had an annual snapping turtle hunt/fry.

What did they taste like?  Chicken?  Would they cook them up like chicken nuggets or something?

Also, I should have mentioned that I am really jealous that I didn't have a chance to party with dudes who hunted and cooked snapping turtles at a bar.  Not joking.

No idea.  Chicken is probably a solid guess.  Never went on those hunts, but always pictured it like the scene from Jaws where all the locals are out on the water trying to catch the shark after the kid gets eaten.  My old man was a Seabrook Tavern softball team alum when, many moons ago, Topeka was the softball capital of the world (OPINION).

Boss Hawgs BBQ was great, before the dude died.  I'd put old Boss Hawgs up against most places in KC and it would go a full 12-round decision match.

RIP Hank.

you lucky sob.

topeka sportsbars, go!    bullfrogs

The Goose (original).

Reeds (Dangerous Damon's spot at 46th and I-75)

Spankys

Skinny's, but only for lunch. NOT for a bar scene.
Uh...all of them, only for lunch.  There is not a single bar in town i'd step in to at night, except maybe Bullfrogs Live.

Skinny's is very safe.    There's about half dozen cops that hang out there all the time.   Best bar food in town.

The Michel family took it back over.   Long story, the Michels started Seabrook, ran it for years, then the daughter sold off the business about 10 years ago.   about 2 years ago she decided she wanted back in, so she declined to renew the lease in the old building, so Seabrook moved downtown.   She reopend as Specks (her dad's nickname) and runs it out of the same location.   The new Seabrook is now closed.

My mom used to work with her uncle.

You're right.  It's on Kansas Avenue.  Kickstart Saloon.  Drove by that bar quite a bit on the way to softball @ Shawnee North.

Don't know if we have any oldtimers on the board but my old man used to frequent a scuzzy little bar called Brewskies, right by Washburn.  I used to go down there and drink pitchers of soda and play video games while he got drunk and played darts with his buddies.  Pops had a drinkin' problem.

Casa is garbage.  One of the worst locally owned places in town that draws a good crowd, since China Inn closed down.

true.      Do like the black bean chicken burrito at Tequila's and also the meican style tacos at the place in the old Pizza Hut at 29th and Fairlawn.

Give Banjo's another chance, especially if you like Biscuits and Gravy.
