FACT: Terrible HS athletics.

My senior year of high school, our men's basketball team one only a single game.  That game was against the Manhattan High Indians.   :eye:

 :surprised:

Manhattan has terrific HS athletics. That's a great win.

Maybe so, but I meant "won" not "one."  Not sure why/how I did that.  Weird.

Another FACT:  The Seabrook Tavern (aka Specks) serves a gigantic burger.

FACT:  Felini's frozen pizza was owned by the same Topeka family that owned Champions BBQ, and who held the patent for the majority of pickled eggs in the Midwest, including Wetta pickled eggs (served in the Aggie Lounge of Aggieville fame).
Champions BBQ is now "Varsity Blues"

The Plantation Steakhouse deserves to be mentioned as a candidate for most unusual dinning experience in Topeka.  You can get a private room.   :fatty:

Best friend is a waiter there (never been myself though)
Haven't been around Topeka much since I was in elementary school, thread makes me miss it a lot to be honest.

Used to shop at Falley's a lot because it was closer than Dillon's. Those grocery stores still around? Don't remember anything special about it.

Fries with gravy waiting for the burger @ Annie's place always made me happy, great place to eat.

Still feels weird to see the big statue on top of the capital building when driving past, most of the time I was there it didn't exist.
Falley's is gone.   The one on 10th is abandoned.  The one Gage is now Seabrook apple market.

They renamed the Seabrook Tavern "Specks", and now the Seabrook Tavern is at 10th and Quincy (with the Globe and Giovannis)

Boss Hawgs BBQ was great, before the dude died.  I'd put old Boss Hawgs up against most places in KC and it would go a full 12-round decision match.
Before Hank died it was elite. Now it is garbage.  Sorry bro.

Reeds (Dangerous Damon's spot at 46th and I-75)

Spankys

Skinny's, but only for lunch. NOT for a bar scene.
Uh...all of them, only for lunch.  There is not a single bar in town i'd step in to at night, except maybe Bullfrogs Live.

FACT: Scariest looking chineese place outside of a legitimate "Chinatown" district in a big city resides in Topeka.

Indeed, i often ponder of eating there, but never do.  It just looks disgusting.  However, i have heard that it isn't bad... if you enjoy sitting on the crapper for 3 hours after your meal.
come the f*ck on linux, man up and grab some carryout from Golden Dynasty tonight.
It's typical greasy americanized cantonese fair.  It'll do the trick.

Fact: Silver Lake has the best Chinese food in Kansas.  I didn't include it in the Topeka list because...it's not in Topeka.

For those who remember "Sun's" (now El Centinela, used to be JJ's Bistro) in Topeka near 21st and Belle - same food for the most part, the son of the owners of Silver Lake Chinese ran it.

Great pan fried "jowzee's".  Only open on Friday/Saturday night, and only serve soda by the can.

At one time there was a great strip club on the city's west side called Caberet USA.  I may or may not have picked up a stripper and put her over my shoulder and began carrying her out one fourth of July around 2pm after drinking approx 30 or so scotches.

before it was caberet usa, it was called the outer limits. go go girls...topless dancing...
when i was in highschool, a group of us went in and acted like we were lost and asked for directions.  :users:

i also got kicked out of the topeka high "dungeon" and was permanently banned from sporting events at topeka west.  :users:

The pickled eggs at the Lou were basically homemade.  Dwayne bought regular pickled eggs at Sams and added peppers and stuff to them.  He gave me the recipe years ago but I was never able to completely recreate them.  They may be different now that he's deed though.

Is the new Seabrook owned by the same people that own Specs?

Even Specs website still links to articles that call it Seabrook.  They were using the names interchangeably throughout the 80's and 90's.

Also, I should have mentioned that I am really jealous that I didn't have a chance to party with dudes who hunted and cooked snapping turtles at a bar.  Not joking.
