Not to restate the obvious but there will be a absolute ton of college (and HS, and elementary) who have this and have no idea.  And they will continue, literally forever until there is a really good vaccine.  The breathless reporting of it is really counterproductive.

I think looking Illinois is useful because they  show that even if you have a pretty good plan there's not much you can do to keep it from spreading. Like we know in places like Bama and KSU with basically no plan it's gonna spread like crazy and we just hope it doesn't spread to the old people in town

Agreed.  It's not going anywhere.  You can't stay home forever because the minute you stop staying home, there it is.  I am not advocating the "sorry olds, stay home" but if you are an old you should definitely be staying home.  I'm not into being helpless but I think we kind of are.  And it really sucks that DQ doesn't post hopeful stats ITT for me.  selfish prick

Cases and deaths are down considerably from the "second wave" (or whatever you want to call it) peak.

Deaths down about 20 percent; cases down 40 percent.

We're down very far from our "first wave" death peak - down about 66 percent.

Agreed.  It's not going anywhere.  You can't stay home forever because the minute you stop staying home, there it is.

I absolutely can and will WFH and not go to bars or fly until case counts are way down locally and/or there's a vaccine. Hard to justify things like that when my wife's unit is way understaffed and she has had coworkers (including at least one nurse) die from it. I'm not worried about catching from it as much as I am about spreading it to people who don't have the luxury of working from home. My job's pretty stable, I'm lucky to have friends within walking distance with nice back yards, to be in California where you can always do something outside so I'll be fine.

That said, if places like KC or Wichita can keep their case counts trackable then yeah open up and contain it.

As far as kc goes it feels like we are doing just enough to keep the cases not go crazy but not enough to push it down to NYC levels. We are 2 months into masks mandate. Positivity percent is still too high for my liking but it could possibly be due to kcmo free testing is being more targeted to hot spot zip codes. I can't get one for free from the city.
