what CFM are those units? Usually when we see pricing for things like UV or carbon or other gas phase filtration they usually price it on a per CFM basis. I don't remember the ballpark numbers but i know that some of those the budget price is like $0.50/CFM unless you have really big units in which case it's more in the $0.25/CFM range.

berenson is pretty awful (due to his trolling style and overwhelming bitterness), but this is interesting and should be looked at closely in the US

The evidence seems pretty compelling about kids being low risk, but drawing a blanket conclusion that “schools should be open” seems a little much. Kids 1-5 seem the least vulnerable, but there are plenty examples of kids in the 8-17 range being pretty severely affected.

compared to the flu it's pretty benign. And I think the key takeaway is transmission from child to adults.

but there's also another teensy weensy possible factor that might make it a little easier for Netherlands to open schools

(yes I know raw positive test data isn't perfect, everyone)

I'm sure he does but it doesn't work well with his narrative

Big HVAC supporter here. Correcto on skipping the UV unless you just want a clean coil. It takes more than a couple of bulbs to clean the airstream.

You need an active technology that stays with the airstream. Needlepoint bipolar ionization technology works as does most of the oxidation products. Downside of oxidation is ozone production which can be problematic for asthmatic.

I use npbi in my own home and we've installed in all of our branches.

How it works for those curious:

Also works to fill the hole in the ozone layer

These varied from 10-20,000. So roughly $0.65/cfm, but labor rates are high.

I put those on a couple of DOAS units for odor reasons, but I was really curious how effective those are for covid. Most of their case studies are for bacteria but i think they recently came out with a study saying they had something like 93% effective kill rate for covid but that was also for a 30 minute exposure time which isn't very helpful like okay what is the effective kill rate when its just for 1/4 of a second? Also i know those ions will hold their charge for something like 15 seconds which is good but they have to be downstream of final filters...final filters apparently trap the ions.

Yes must be downstream of filters. You can get them as duct mounted devices.

The testing is done by third party to simulate aircraft fuselage. Press release briefly describes testing.

As to not to promote one brand, Aerisa (made in-house) and Nu-Calgon iWave (made by GPS) is the same technology.

If you're a specifying engineer, I'd look to Aerisa. Great company. Will build what you need but likely already have.

this is a smart take. all the air scrubbing technology in the world won't do jack crap if an infected person is sitting in the cubicle next to you. But, it will go a long way in not recirculating it to everyone else in the building.

Given that's not been shown to be a way it spreads seems like a lot of fear spending.

Yeah I always enjoy it when our construction nerds nerd out. They love it! and their joy is infectious

Arizona closing bars, restaurants and theaters.

When they should really be shutting down the border to all but essential.  Lots of anecdotal stories of AZ'ers rolling down to Mexico for the day, where the RONA is rolling pretty much totally unchecked and then coming back home.

I bet lots are not wearing masks.

I just saw a video of a news reporter who sneezed, coughed, sang and spoke at petri dishes with and without a mask on from 2-4-6 feet, the next day, it was pretty telling.    Non scientific, but still very revealing IMO.

Can't believe we're going to have to do this all again with the new pig virus.
