The state of Kansas should hire some IT people or something because their site goes down every Monday. What a mess.
Still down. No possible way to apply for unemployment this week. lol. What a joke.

I know it's frustrating, but it's not really their fault. It takes a while to get someone trained to be able to do anything, I heard this morning they are reaching out to retirees to see if they can come back to help with the volume. Suddenly stripping government to bare bones doesn't seem like the best course of action.

Also, there's a thread on the kc reddit that someone figured out the number to call that skips the line or something, maybe try that.

But I think all decent people ought to submit to it, given the circumstances.

People doing dirt can't possibly agree to be part of this.

I know nothing about IT, but apparently their system is like 40 years old, so... Yeah, it's pretty frustrating if that's the case.

Oh yeah, for sure.  But I don't think the system requires everyone in it to be effective.  The more the merrier, but even if we get 40 percent participation (or higher or lower), it'd still be pretty helpful.

Not petty at all, it sucks.  Sorry it's happening to anybody, especially buds on here.

We have to recognize this moment for future "why do we spend money on XXX" questions though.

Sure, but that's a little revisionist.  The debate was never framed as "we have to prepare for some catastrophic economic meltdown/health crisis" in terms of spending.  At least not that I can remember.

I think it's disingenuous for anyone at this point (aside from maybe CDC/Intelligence wonks) to say "I told you so" regarding the current crisis.

My comment is just in general around our constant erosion of funding government services at every level, especially those in social services like unemployment.  We constantly hear how it's wasteful and try and streamline every process / agency to the nth degree.

Say I hypothetically commit some sort of crime in the future. I'd rather get off scot-free, and I don't see this sort of thing as helpful to that endeavor.

Then don't opt in. Side note: law enforcement can already obtain cell tower tracking information via subpoenas.

I'm definitely exaggerating, but the fourth amendment isn't much of a barrier to US intelligence and law enforcement doing whatever they want when it comes to accessing personal data.

Right, but some government spending is wasteful (that's pretty much a bi-partisan agreement), the current once-in-a-century endemic notwithstanding.

I don't think the current circumstance is evidence of good/bad government spending beyond preparation for this this or similar circumstances.

I don't think the unemployment office needs to be funded at a level to handle this volume of claims at all times.
