I sure hope this is a joke, like a complete punchline I'm missing. My wife is scared shitless that she's going to lose her mother, grandmother, and grandfather before our son turns 1, I'm worried about the same about my mother, who lost her mother the day before my 1st birthday. We have people on here seemingly wondering about the benefits of thinning the herd.

Nope, no punchline this [redacted] was being dead serious. Well I suppose he can take solace in the fact that he doesn't know anyone on this board and can be unaffected if/when some of us lose ones because who gives a eff, they're old anyway. Party on!

There are people out there that are scared shitless they are going to lose their homes, lose their cars, go into bankruptcy due to all of the closings.  Businesses are being destroyed and people are losing their jobs, but there is no concern being paid to this collateral damage.  Financial distress is a leading precursor of suicide.  There is little doubt that people are going to commit suicide largely due to the financial destruction being wrought by these policies being enacted in response to COVID-19.  There will also be an increase in depression, alcohol abuse and drug abuse.  Cash transfers and other temporary financial solutions won't bring businesses back that are being destroyed.  Those individuals may have lost their livelihood forever.

There are officials also talking about implementing a complete lock down.  How many women and children is this going to lock into a domestic violence situation that will be exacerbated by the lock down.  Will this result in any deaths?

Nobody likes to weigh costs and benefits in situations like these.  It makes them uncomfortable trying to place a value on saving people's lives.  However that doesn't mean it shouldn't be done.  I have 80+ year old grandparents and parents that are 65+.  I know plenty of people that are at a higher risk of mortality from COVID-19.  I just don't think that my personal fears should preempt a rational evaluation of the proposals to mitigate the effects of COVID-19.

Is your argument that the stress effects would be less if drastic measures wasn't taken and the number of deaths would be measured in the millions? Bold take.

His models assume zero negative financial implications from continuing business as normal

I had a bad joke post in my head that maybe the Dems should try running Mitt Romney against Don Jr. if Biden doesn't work out but now it doesn't look like such a bad idea!

my wife went to mexico before we really understood the possible/probable consequences and before she had any symptoms and interacted with a lot of people, including elderly family members.

my wife tested negative for covid19, so we're off the hook for killing a bunch of people.

I'm glad to hear that. Were you tested?

I honestly think anyone who's traveled in the last month should be tested. I don't think that's asking too much.

Yeah, testing anyone who has been on an airplane would just be good policy.

We personally know someone who’s child was presumptively diagnosed with COVID-19. They swabbed her but discarded it cause they had to prioritize tests. Couldn’t process all of them.

Ricky Sandler on CNBC right now talking about some options. Best one is that the government provides business interruption insurance coverage for all business who have to close under the condition they continue paying/don't lay off employees. handling it would be an absolute nightmare but seems like a reasonable move.

I think since he decided to be pompous about corona while literally traveling it's much deserved, but i'll rest my case there. I still think people should get tested that have traveled recently.

My CEO had a morning conference call to all of us today. Left it open for questions and somebody literally asked right away "Due to the closing of some of our offices, will there be layoffs?" and he immediately said "NO!". I thought that was a bit presumptuous this early in the game.

Hopefully tbt is taking the correct precautions.

My mom has friends from Winnipeg staying with her right now. They arrived on Wednesday when people were still not understanding the severity of the problem. They have been trying to get a flight home early but nothing is available. I think their scheduled flight has already been canceled.

I think it should start with cash direct to workers. Simplest and probably the most effective.

I don't know if that was one of Ricky's options but I'd be OK with the business interruption insurance too.

I think it's better to insure paychecks are still being sent out to people who are unable to work, but I don't know how to address our stupid tip based industries with that.

So many lessons we are going to learn from this that we should have been better prepared for as a individual, family, company, city, state, country but much like any business resumption / disaster recovery type of exercise nobody pays it any attention until it's here.

As a country we should be better positioned than this though.  This should not sneak up on us ever again.

American elitism at its finest is coming back and is smacking us upside the head.

He was 100% focused on the economic actions to take, not the helping of the individuals in most need. Idea was that this would keep us in the best place to resume normal activity as soon as possible with the least negative impact to the economy.

I went back to page 45 and didn't see anything close to a proposed solution. I fear if I go back farther I'll see more questions about face touching.
