Also watched Coming 2 America yesterday - overall pretty meh and sort of a disappointment. It had a handful of laughs and in fact I literally LOL'd when the girl was still barking and jumping on one leg. Arsenio was basically non-existent in this and didn't have the same magic/chemistry with Eddie from the original movie. Wesley Snipes was very good though!
The Semmi character wasn't really visible in Coming To America either once they got to Queens. Other than the bar scene, the only other Semmi scene was him in the hot tub in the apartment when the king shows up. Arsenio's contribution was with the My-T-Sharp crew.
It was fine, they hit the funeral and the barber shop out of the park!!!
O my yes, both scenes were still top notch.
I overall enjoyed it, I know the premise of the first one is fairly sped up (finding a wife in 30 days) but that was really the overall "issue" if there was one with Coming 2 America, it was all incredibly convenient plot devices to make the story go forward, from how he had a son, to finding him, to getting him back to be prince, to his eldest daughter getting over her essential birthright being stolen from her to him, to getting it back, all of it was, rushed, but I also "get" it.
I also enjoyed the direct joke at making fun of hollywood, and remaking movies 30 years after the fact, and when no one asked for it either, which I thought was a great jab at itself, and I think in general really what made the movie work, it was made to be entertaining and fun, and it did not take itself too seriously. Lots of great cameos/featured people, expected (and proper) throwbacks to the original (even getting the whole Randolph and Mortimer pseudo in the mix), and also being something that definitely "fit" with a continuation of a story 30 years later. Everyone looked as you'd expect after 30 years, acted as you thought they would, etc, made it feel more natural. It's not the best movie, or the best sequel to anything, but it did enough to be fun, entertaining, and worthy enough sequel.
