Is Frank the only coach to make it to the final four prior to collecting his first league championship?

Shaka Smart did it.
Look how far he has come

Also Kevin Ollie. I'm guessing it's happened fairly often.

Yea, I'm not sure getting to a FF is significantly harder than winning a major conference championship. Did oscar win the conference at Illinois when he did it?

It's absolutely easier to make it to a Final Four than win a P5 Conference championship. You can get to a Final Four with a little luck and favorable matchups - not so with a regular season conference title.

oscar won the big 10 in 04 and 05, finished second (tie) in 06 and 09.

I should rephrase: It's easier for a non-elite team to make it to a Final Four. It could be more difficult for a school like Kentucky or Kansas or Villanova to make a Final Four than win a conference title. Because they have more to lose when luck is a factor.

To state what is probably obvious, I bet Frank was a nightmare to supervise.  Yes, he won, but really, him screaming "eff!" in a way that could be heard throughout the OOD is -- suboptimal?  I don't blame Currie for trying to address that to some degree.  Curse all you want at practice and at games, but, can you try not doing it in such a way that everyone in the building can hear you?  I mean, that's not an unreasonable demand from an AD I don't think.

That said there are a host of other fair grievances with Currie. Specifically, it's Currie's job to do every reasonable thing he can do to keep the talent happy.  It's clear to me (especially in light of the Mike Cox situ.) that Currie is a complete failure when it comes to managing his head coaches.  To anyone who still had doubts about whose "fault" Frank's departure was, the Mike Cox issue should be all you need to vindicate Frank.

I like your consistency with being reasonable when you post Dlew.

yes frank would have been a mild pita to manage and yes he needed to tone down the language, etc.

a normal functioning adult would have been able to convey this info to frank in a normal/non condescending way and I don't think currie was capable of that. I guarantee I could have.

This must have been HS, because he  was pretty much with the same girl all through college. Everyone shits on this kid, but you guys should really be shitting on the coaching staff if you hate him that much.

I agree with this.

Did the research and the unofficial results stoping at 1985 with tourney expansion it was 11/46 that made a final four before a league championship.   Kind of * with some guys who won them at lower leagues but never with the team they took to final four.

Rick Pitino 1987
Steve Fisher 1989
PJ Carlesimo 1989
Lon Kruger 1994
Mike Montgomery 1998
Dick Bennett 2000
Kelvin Sampson 2002
Paul Hewitt 2004
Shaka Smart 2011
Kevin Ollie 2014
Frank Martin 2017

Being that you're not a power hungry, paranoid control freak, I'm sure you're right.

If the Mike Cox thing has any legs, it's by far the strangest pursuit Currie has ever devised.  Frankly ( ;) ) that makes the Frank stuff look like child's play imo.

If Frank thought the AD was for him and not against him, its reasonable to assume he would've been more adaptable while here at KSU

Well good thing Frank "handout" Martin is no longer around to baby our players like he did with Will then.

All Frank all day today.   ESPN radio this morning with DL, and then Bobby Cremins (USCe Alum) singing Frank's praises on regional sports talk radio later in the day.

No way Oscar ever gets this kind of play.   Frank is the talk of college basketball.

If oscar made the FF as a 7th seed or higher (which isn't going to happen), he would get plenty of play as well.
